Abstract:Fuel cells promise to be far more efficient, produce lower or zero emissions, and operate cleaner than conventional internal-combustion engine and gas turbine. They are already used for transportation application (buses, cars and tramways). Fuel cells can also be an interesting solution for ships power. However the developments of fuel cell systems for ship are in infancy. The only exception is the PEMFC in the submarines. This solution allows obtaining an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system, which has been adopted in several countries. This paper presents a comprehensive review of different fuel cells and their application on ships. The pro and the cons of the use of fuel cell in ship application are discussed particularly in terms of lifetime and cost.

Abstract:Rising fuel prices, increasing emission levels and impending environmental regulations made shipping industry to find an alternate for internal combustion engine in 21st century. Fuel cell is a sustainable, emerging technology with negligible pollution. More significantly for a research ship, emission levels need to be substantially low to have quality measurements. A feasibility study is carried-out First time in the world, to drive an ice class multi-disciplinary ORV (Oceanography Research Vessel) Sagarnidhi, using hydrogen powered fuel cell. Sagarnidhi is equipped with special equipments viz., Deep Sea winch, specially designed cranes for Launching and retrieval of ROV (Remotely Operable Vehicle), DSMC (Deep Sea Mining Crawler), Tsunami systems, manned/unmanned submersible and ACS (Autonomous Coring System) and other facilities that support research in Indian, International and Antarctic waters. Beside this, the propulsion system along with DP (Dynamic Positioning), centralized air conditioning and special equipments require enormous electrical power. The combustion of diesel oil in an engine, that coupled with an alternator generates electrical power required, along with NOx (Nitrous Oxides), SOx (Sulphur Oxides) and PM (Particulate Matter) emissions. Shipping industry is the fourth largest contributor to air pollution and carbon emissions, particularly in coastal areas, and the growth rate makes the problem even more critical. Stringent international air pollution regulation and increasing fuel price paves the way for an alternative “green emission technology”. Various fuel cells were analyzed with different combination of fuel, electrolyte and electrodes. From the analysis, it has been found that SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) is most suitable for the present scenario. A fuel cell designed with hydrogen as fuel, zirconium oxides stabilized with yttrium oxide as electrolyte and zirconium electrodes is used for 1.5 MW power output and 0.5 MW through regenerator. Volume required for storage of hydrogen is in line with volume of fuel and a high standard safety measures were taken using sensors. The present system saves 3000 MT/annum of diesel oil costing 3,000,000 USD approximately.

Abstract:This study investigates methods for reducing air pollution in the shipping sector, particularly in port areas. The study examines the use of fuel cells as an alternative to diesel generators. Environmental pollution at ports remains a critical issue, so using fuel cells as an alternative to conventional energy systems warrants further research. This study compares commercial fuel cell types that can be used on a case study very large crude carrier (VLCC) vessel specifically, although the technology is applicable to other vessels and requirements. Seven different fuel cell types were ranked based on five criteria to accomplish this. The proton-exchange membrane cell type was found to be the most suitable fuel cell type for the case study vessel. Based on the input fuel, ammonia-based hydrogen storage has been identified as the most promising option, along with using an ammonia reforming unit to produce pure hydrogen. Furthermore, this study provides an integrated fuel cell module and highlights the economic, environmental, and maintenance aspects of implementing the proton-exchange membrane fuel cell module for this case study. It also calculates the required space as a crucial constraint of implementing fuel cell technology at sea.

Abstract:Amid growing emphasis on achieving carbon neutrality, this study conducts a thorough assessment of different fuel cell technologies for their suitability as primary ship power sources. The primary goal is to evaluate the energy efficiency and carbon footprint impacts associated with adopting fuel cells for ship propulsion. The analysis employs simulation modeling and comparative evaluation to establish key indices: energy efficiency design index (EEDI), energy efficiency operational index (EEOI), and carbon footprint design index (CFDI). These indices consider factors like system weight, maintenance cycle, and fuel economy, ensuring a comprehensive comparison under consistent ship design parameters. Results reveal that liquefied natural gas fuel cells, direct methanol fuel cells, and low-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (LT-PEMFC) outperform other fuel cell systems in terms of energy efficiency and carbon emissions reduction. Their respective EEDI values stand at 11.62, 12.72, and 10.05 g CO2/ton·km, accompanied by corresponding EEOI values of 0.10, 0.13, and 0.11 g CO2/ton·km. Additionally, CFDI values are calculated as 39.10 %, 19.45 %, and 11.64 %, respectively. Notably, the comprehensive assessment underscores LT-PEMFC as the most viable option for ship propulsion, offering improved energy utilization, reduced carbon impact, and decreased operational expenses. These findings contribute valuable insights into the appropriateness of diverse fuel cell technologies for ship power applications, considering both their energy efficiency and environmental implications.

Abstract:The ambitious targets set by the International Maritime Organization for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping require radical actions by all relevant stakeholders. In this context, the interest in high efficiency and low emissions (even zero in the case of hydrogen) fuel cell technology for maritime applications has been rising during the last decade, pushing the research developed by academia and industries. This paper aims to present a comparative review of the fuel cell systems suitable for the maritime field, focusing on PEMFC and SOFC technologies. This choice is due to the spread of these fuel cell types concerning the other ones in the maritime field. The following issues are analyzed in detail: (i) the main characteristics of fuel cell systems; (ii) the available technology suppliers; (iii) international policies for fuel cells onboard ships; (iv) past and ongoing projects at the international level that aim to assess fuel cell applications in the maritime industry; (v) the possibility to apply fuel cell systems on different ship types. This review aims to be a reference and a guide to state both the limitations and the developing potential of fuel cell systems for different maritime applications.

Abstract:Implementing environmentally friendly fuels and high efficiency propulsion technologies to replace the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) fueled by fossil fuels such as Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) and Marine Gas Oil (MGO) on board ships represents an attractive solution for maritime power. In this context, fuel cells can play a crucial role, thanks to their high energy efficiency and ultra-low to zero criteria pollutant emissions and environmental impact. This paper performs the technical feasibility analysis for replacing the conventional diesel engine powertrain on board a commercial vessel with an innovative system consisting of ammonia-fuel-based Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) technology. Taking into account the size of the diesel engines installed on board and the typical cruise performed by the commercial vessel, the ammonia consumption, as well as the optimal size of the innovative propulsion system have been assessed. In particular, the SOFC powertrain is sized at the same maximum power output as the main reference diesel engine. The mass and energy balances of the ammonia-based SOFC system have been performed in Aspen Plus TM environment. The gravimetric (kWh kg −1 ) and volumetric (kWh m −3 ) energy density features of the ammonia storage technology as well as the weight and volume of the proposed propulsion system are evaluated for verifying the compliance with the ship’s weight and space requirements. Results highlight that the proposed propulsion system involves an increase in weight both in the engine room and in the fuel room compared to the diesel engine and fuel. In particular, a cargo reduction of about 2.88% is necessary to fit the ammonia-based SOFC system compared to the space available in the reference diesel-fueled ship.

Abstract:Identifying an obvious non-fossil fuel solution for all ship types for meeting the greenhouse gas reduction target in shipping is challenging. This paper evaluates the technical viability, environmental impacts, and economic feasibility of different energy carriers for three case vessels of different ship types: a RoPax ferry, a tanker, and a service vessel. The energy carriers examined include battery-electric and three electro-fuels (hydrogen, methanol, and ammonia) which are used in combination with engines and fuel cells. Three methods are used: preliminary ship design feasibility, life cycle assessment, and life cycle costing. The results showed that battery-electric and compressed hydrogen options are not viable for some ships due to insufficient available onboard space for energy storage needed for the vessel's operational range. The global warming reduction potential is shown to depend on the ship type. This reduction potential of assessed options changes also with changes in the carbon intensity of the electricity mix. Life cycle costing results shows that the use of ammonia and methanol in engines has the lowest life cycle cost for all studied case vessels. However, the higher energy conversion losses of these systems make them more vulnerable to fluctuations in the price of electricity. Also, these options have higher environmental impacts on categories like human toxicity, resource use (minerals and metals), and water use. Fuel cells and batteries are not as cost-competitive for the case vessels because of their higher upfront costs and shorter lifetimes. However, these alternatives are less expensive than alternatives with internal combustion engines in the case of higher utilization rates and fuel costs.

Abstract:The maritime industry has entered its pathway of decarbonization. To achieve the IMO's ambitious goals of an absolute emissions reduction of 50% by 2050, and a 70% carbon intensity reduction by 2050 compared to the 2008 level, various options for the adoption of technologies and alternative fuels are considered by the market stakeholders.Ammonia, one of the most promising alternative marine fuels has long been considered to reduce carbon emissions. And solid oxide fuel cell is expected to transform ship propulsion technology in the future due to its high utilization of fuels. In this paper, a feasibility study is performed to assess the application of an ammonia cracker-integrated solid oxide fuel cell (hereafter as Ammonia SOFC) system on an ocean-going vessel through a detailed CAPEX, FuelEX, OPEX, Carbon tax, and carbon emission analysis. Comparison is made with direct ammonia, LNG and conventional fuels fired heat engines. The result concludes that it can be economically viable to apply to deep-sea shipping, compared to other marine fuels and propulsion technologies.

Abstract:Future ships need to operate with low or possibly zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while ensuring low influence on other environmental impacts and that the operation is economically feasible. This study conducts a life-cycle evaluation of potential decarbonization solutions involving selected energy carriers (electrolytic hydrogen, electro-ammonia, electro-methanol, and electricity) in different propulsion system setups (engines, fuel cells, and carbon capture technologies) in terms of environmental impact and costs. The results of the study show that the assessed decarbonization options are promising measures to reduce maritime GHG emissions with low-carbon-intensive electricity. The same order of GHG reduction is shown to be possible independent of the propulsion system and energy carrier used onboard. However, the carbon abatement cost ranges from 300 to 550 €/tCO2eq, and there is a trade-off with environmental impacts such as human toxicity (cancer and non-cancer effects) and freshwater ecotoxicity mainly linked with the wind infrastructure used for electricity production. Electro-ammonia in fuel cells is indicated to be effective in terms of the carbon abatement cost followed by the so-called HyMethShip concept. The higher abatement cost of all options compared to current options indicates that major incentives and policy measures are required to promote the introduction of alternative fuel and propulsion systems.

Abstract:Fuel cells as clean power sources are very attractive for the maritime sector, which is committed to sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas and atmospheric pollutant emissions from ships. This paper presents a technological review on fuel cell power systems for maritime applications from the past two decades. The available fuels including hydrogen, ammonia, renewable methane and methanol for fuel cells under the context of sustainable maritime transportation and their pre-processing technologies are analyzed. Proton exchange membrane, molten carbonate and solid oxide fuel cells are found to be the most promising options for maritime applications, once energy efficiency, power capacity and sensitivity to fuel impurities are considered. The types, layouts and characteristics of fuel cell modules are summarized based on the existing applications in particular industrial or residential sectors. The various research and demonstration projects of fuel cell power systems in the maritime industry are reviewed and the challenges with regard to power capacity, safety, reliability, durability, operability and costs are analyzed. Currently, power capacity, costs and lifetime of the fuel cell stack are the primary barriers. Coupling with batteries, modularization, mass production and optimized operating and control strategies are all important pathways to improve the performance of fuel cell power systems.

Abstract:In support of the IMO's GHG emission goals, and to promote the introduction of hydrogen fuel cell technology onto vessels in North America, the Hornblower Group company Alcatraz Island Services, LLC (AIS), conducted a project named “Nautilus” to retrofit an existing diesel-battery hybrid passenger ferry with a hydrogen fuel-cell system in order to test and evaluate hydrogen technology as an approach to reduce reliance on diesel fuel for motive and auxiliary power. As Phase 1 of the project, AIS and its partners designed a “buildable” hydrogen fuel cell hybrid drivetrain to supply auxiliary power to the vessel, rechristened the Discover Zero. The very detailed design, with sufficient fidelity to be constructed, provided a platform to encounter specific regulatory issues, and devise approaches to satisfactorily resolving those concerns. Following a preliminary design that underwent a HazID study and received feedback, the plans and drawings for an advanced design were submitted to the United States Coast Guard (USCG) for approval. The improved propulsion system design combines power from the hydrogen fuel cells with the existing onboard lithium-ion batteries. The design obtained a Design Basis Letter from the USCG Marine Safety Center (MSC). This report describes the activities and results of Phase 1, including the drivetrain design, management of regulatory concerns, arrangement of hazardous zones related to hydrogen usage, and lessons learned.

Abstract:Abstract Background Naval traffic is highly dependent on depleting fossil resources and causes significant greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, marine transportation is a major backbone of world trade. Thus, alternative fuel concepts are highly needed. Different fuels such as ammonia, methanol, liquefied natural gas and hydrogen have been proposed. For some of them, first prototype vessels have been in operation. However, practical experience is still limited. Most studies so far focus on aspects such as efficiency and economics. However, particularly in marine applications, reliability of propulsion systems is of utmost importance, because failures on essential ship components at sea pose a huge safety risk. If the respective components lose their functionality, repair can be much more challenging due to large distances to dockyards and the complicated transport of spare parts to the ship. Consequently, evaluation of reliability should be a core element of system analysis for new marine fuels. Results In this study, reliability was studied for four potential fuels. The analysis involved several steps: estimation of overall failure rates, identification of most vulnerable components and assessment of criticality by including severity of fault events. On the level of overall failure rate, ammonia is shown to be very promising. Extending the view over a pure failure rate-based evaluation shows that other approaches, such as LOHC or methanol, can be competitive in terms of reliability and risk. As different scenarios require different weightings of the different reliability criteria, the conclusion on the best technology can differ. Relevant aspects for this decision can be the availability of technical staff, high-sea or coastal operation, the presence of non-naval personnel onboard and other factors. Conclusions The analysis allowed to compare different alternative marine fuel concepts regarding reliability. However, the analysis is not limited to assessment of overall failure rates, but can also help to identify critical elements that deserve attention to avoid fault events. As a last step, severity of the individual failure modes was included. For the example of ammonia, it is shown that the decomposition unit and the fuel cell should be subject to measures for increasing safety and reducing failure rates.
Hybrid fuel cell electric propulsion for marine transport applications: case study of a domestic ferry

Abstract:With the increase in the volume of the world trade transported by the sea which has exceeded 80%, the interest in reducing the negative environmental impact of shipping has been growing recently. Therefore, the international maritime organization (IMO) has published and proposed regulations, measures and emission reduction policies to control the greenhouse gases emitted by ships. Hybrid electric power and propulsion concepts have been suggested by the IMO as an Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) technical reduction measure to increase the energy efficiency of ships. Different power sources and technologies can be used in hybrid propulsion systems which include fuel cells. Using fuel cell as the main source of power can increase the potentials of hybrid electric propulsion systems for reducing the emissions problem. In this presentation, an overview of hybrid electric power and propulsion concepts is introduced focusing on fuel cells, its basics, advantages, disadvantages, and its different marine applications. In order to assess the effectiveness of hybrid fuel cell propulsion systems, a three degree-of-freedom total ship system simulator is developed and implemented in MATLAB/Simulink environment. For a domestic ferry of the Faroe Islands, a hybrid fuel cell electric propulsion system is proposed and studied using the developed ship simulator. A comparison between the proposed hybrid system and the conventional diesel engines is then presented in terms of the first cost, fuel cost, system size and weight. Simulation results of the developed simulator are validated for the ferry existing diesel propulsion system using real ship operational data

Abstract:Recently, the shipping industry has been under increasing pressure to improve its environmental impact with a target of a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, compared to the 2008 levels. For this reason, great attention has been placed on alternative zero-carbon fuels, specifically ammonia, which is considered a promising solution for shipping decarbonisation. In this respect, a novel ammonia-powered fuel-cell configuration is proposed as an energy-efficient power generation configuration with excellent environmental performance. However, there are safety and reliability concerns of the proposed ammonia-powered system that need to be addressed prior to its wider acceptance by the maritime community. Therefore, this is the first attempt to holistically examine the safety, operability, and reliability of an ammonia fuel-cell-powered ship, while considering the bunkering and fuel specifications. The proposed methodology includes the novel combination of a systematic preliminary hazard identification process with a functional and model-based approach for simulating the impact of various hazards. Furthermore, the critical faults and functional failures of the proposed system are identified and ranked according to their importance. This work can be beneficial for both shipowners and policymakers by introducing technical innovation and for supporting the future regulatory framework.
Experimental characterization of a PEM fuel cell for marine power generation

Abstract:This study is focused on the possible application of hydrogen-fed PEM fuel cells on board ships. For this purpose, a test plant including a 100 kW generator suitable for marine application and a power converter including a supercapacitor-based energy storage system has been designed, built and experimentally characterised. The plant design integrates standard industrial components suitable for marine applications that include the technologies with the highest degree of maturity currently available on the market. Fuel Cell generator and power converter have been specifically designed by manufacturers to fit the specific plant needs. The experimental characterisation of the plant has been focused on the evaluation of the efficiency of the single components and of the overall system. Results shows a PEM fuel cell efficiency of 48% (when all auxiliaries are included) and an overall plant efficiency, including power conditioning, of about 45%. From load variation response tests, the fuel cell response time was maximum 2 seconds without supercapacitors and increased up to 20 seconds with supercapacitors connected, reducing the stress on the fuel cell generator. Experimental results confirm that PEM fuel cells, when supported by a suitably sized energy storage system, represent a viable technical solution for zero-emission power generation on board ships.

Abstract:The shipping industry is becoming increasingly aware of its environmental responsibilities in the long-term. In 2018, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) pledged to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 50% by the year 2050 as compared with a baseline value from 2008. Ammonia has been regarded as one of the potential carbon-free fuels for ships based on these environmental issues. In this paper, we propose four propulsion systems for a 2500 Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) container feeder ship. All of the proposed systems are fueled by ammonia; however, different power systems are used: main engine, generators, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), and solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). Further, these systems are compared to the conventional main engine propulsion system that is fueled by heavy fuel oil, with a focus on the economic and environmental perspectives. By comparing the conventional and proposed systems, it is shown that ammonia can be a carbon-free fuel for ships. Moreover, among the proposed systems, the SOFC power system is the most eco-friendly alternative (up to 92.1%), even though it requires a high lifecycle cost than the others. Although this study has some limitations and assumptions, the results indicate a meaningful approach toward solving GHG problems in the maritime industry.

Abstract:PEM Fuel Cells are considered among the most promising technologies for hydrogen utilization in both stationary and automotive applications. The number of FC installations on board ships – alone or in hybrid configuration with batteries – is increasing significantly, although international regulations that drive their installation are still missing. In this scenario, the project TecBia aims to identify a dedicated test protocol and the best commercial PEMFC technology for marine applications, assessing the integration of a 140 kW PEMFC system on the Zero Emission Ultimate Ship (ZEUS) vessel. The system design and technology provider has been chosen after a technical comparison based on a dedicated experimental campaign. The experimental campaign had two goals: (i) analyse the performance of the different PEMFC systems to define the best characteristics for maritime applications; (ii) verify the compliance with naval requirements with reference to current and future standards. The present study shows the resulting test protocol for FC Systems (FCS) for maritime applications, defined starting from the existing international regulations on FCS installations and on naval environment requirements; the results of its application on the commercial system chosen for the installation on ZEUS are reported.

Abstract:The exploitation of hydrogen-based technologies for on-board power generation is having a significant impact on the shipping industry due to their potential to support the decarbonization. This paper proposes the modeling and optimization of a fuel-cell (FC) hybrid power system for the case study ferry in order to achieve the best performance on stack degradation over the vessel experimental missions cycle. The FC system degradation has a significant impact on hydrogen consumption, energy efficiency and machinery operational cost. The research target is to build a prescriptive digital twin to provide an holistic design of the fuel cell system. The simulations will consider power distribution between components proposing an energy management strategy during the preliminary design phase. By sizing the components to meet the energy demand of a real mission, this work aims to propose a feasible powertrain solution for the ferry under investigation. The results of this study could be valuable for the further development of fuel cell technology for the maritime industry and provide an effective tool in the sizing of the power generation system on board full electric propulsion vessels.

Abstract:The use of subsea processing equipment, which maintains, increases and speeds up oil and gas production, is now more and more widespread on offshore subsea oil and gas field developments. Further, there is a strong drive for electrification of offshore fields, both subsea and topside installations, to lower emissions. To meet the technical challenges of these developments, subsea transmission, distribution and conversion electrical equipment are developed through the ABB Subsea Power JIP where ABB, Equinor, Chevron and Total are partners. In 2013, ABB and its Joint Industrial Partners, Equinor, Total and Chevron, began an expansive project to design and test a complete subsea electrification solution for the oil and gas industry. To enable operations at remote locations in ultra-deep waters ABB developed modular equipment - components and assemblies - that integrate to form a subsea electrification system. The system consists of variable speed drives (VSDs), switchgear and a protection and control system for the transmission, distribution and conversion of power to subsea pumps and gas compressors at a peak capacity of 100 MW to water depths up to 3,000 meters; and with transmission distances up to 600km with lifetime requirements for up to 30 years. Topside area is freed, power supply demands and greenhouse gas emissions are reduced. Illustrates a typical subsea processing facility.
