Abstract:The chemical reduction of Au(III) ions and anisotropic growth of Au nanoparticles were studied in the biocompatible solution system containing glucose-citrate. Based on the characterization of VIS/NIR spectrum and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) as well as the technology of gradient centrifugation separation, a chain gold particle nanostructure of potato-like shape with multiple twin crystals was obtained and its solution had two characteristic surface plasmon resonance absorption peaks which appeared at the shorter and longer wavelength direction in the spectrum curve, respectively. The self-assembly property induced by NaOH in the solution containing spherical and elliptic gold nanoparticles was studied. The spectral curve profile of obtaining gold nanochains was similar to that of gold nanorod and the corresponding maximum longitudinal plasmon resonance absorption was located at longer wavelength≈800 nm. The formation of the chain gold nanostructure and self-assembly mechanism of gold nanoparticles are discussed briefly.
Β-Cyclodextrin Modified Gold Nanoparticles: Catalytic Applications and Molecular Selectivity

Abstract:L-Cys-beta-CD@AuNPs nanoparticles were synthesized by a simple method of the reduction of HAuCl4 with NaBH4 and L-Cys-CD. The catalytic activity of L-Cys-beta-CD@AuNPs nanoparticles for the catalytic reductions of 4-nitrophenol and 4-nitro-1-naphthol was researched in detail. Because of the selective binding of beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) to different guest molecules, L-Cys-beta-CD@AuNPs exhibits diverse catalytic activities for different substrates. The experimental results prove that L-Cys-beta-CD@AuNPs shows better catalytic efficiency for the reduction of 4-nitro-1-naphthol than p-nitrophenol.

Abstract:We herein present a three-in-one nanoplatform for sensing, self-assembly, and cascade catalysis, enabled by cyclodextrin modified gold nanoparticles (CD@AuNPs). Monodisperse AuNPs 15-20 nm in diameter are fabricated in an eco-friendly way by the proposed one-step colloidal synthesis method using CD as both reducing agents and stabilizers. First, the as-prepared AuNPs are employed as not only scaffolds but energy acceptors for turn-on fluorescent sensing based on guest replacement reaction. Then, the macrocyclic supramolecule functionalized AuNPs can be controllably assembled and form well-defined one- and two-dimensional architectures using tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin as mediator. Finally, in addition to conventional host-guest interaction based properties, the CD@AuNPs possess unpredictable catalytic activity and exhibit mimicking properties of both glucose oxidase and horseradish peroxidase simultaneously. Especially, the cascade reaction (glucose is first catalytically oxidized and generates gluconic acid and H2O2; then the enzymatic H2O2 and preadded TMB (3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine) are further catalyzed into H2O and oxTMB, respectively) is well-achieved using the AuNPs as the sole catalyst. By employing a joint experimental-theoretical study, we reveal that the unique catalytic properties of the CD@AuNPs probably derive from the special topological structures of CD molecules and the resulting electron transfer effect from the AuNP surface to the appended CD molecules.

Abstract:In this Letter, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was employed as stabilizer in the synthesis of gold nanoparticles. Gold nanoparticles were synthesized by the reduction of HAuCl4 by NaBH4 in the presence of β-CD. Varying the ratio of β-CD to HAuCl4, isolated gold nanoparticles could be assembled into nanowires. The nanoparticles and nanowires were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, UV/visible spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The decreased relative intensity of skeletal and ring vibration in FT-IR spectra and the negative shift of the Au4f7/2 binding energy in XPS spectra confirmed that β-CD was chemisorped on Au nanoparticles via hydroxyl group.

Abstract:Controlled synthesis of Au nanoparticles with adjustable sizes (10−50 nm) and narrow size distributions (<10% in standard deviation) was realized by reducing hydrochloroauric acid with α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) in an alkaline aqueous solution, which was very simple and “green”. It was revealed that a proper pH was essential to the formation of stable dispersions of nonaggregated Au nanoparticles and a higher pH would lead to the welding of the Au nanoparticles into one-dimensional (1D) wires or three-dimensional (3D) aggregates. Moreover, 1D assembly of α-CD-capped Au nanoparticles into nanochains was readily induced by partial removal of the organic stabilization shell, which resulted from the host−guest interactions between α-CDs capped on Au nanoparticle surfaces and toluene molecules. Amphiphilic multiblock copolymer stabilized Au nanoparticles

Abstract:Stable gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are synthesized in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) by using amphiphilic multiblock copolymer (P4VP–PS–P4VP)n containing multiple trithiocarbonate moieties or amphiphilic triblock copolymer (HS–P4VP–PS–P4VP–SH) with thiol end groups as protecting agents. Only isolated gold nanoparticles are obtained, which indicate that the multiple functional groups of a single polymer chain are grafted at the same time to the same nanoparticle. The sizes of the AuNPs are slightly increased with raising the concentration of gold salt for a given concentration of the copolymers, leading to the red shift of the surface plasmon resonance of the AuNPs. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and scanning force microscopy (SFM) images confirm that the AuNPs are indeed wrapped by the block copolymers. With the amphiphilic characteristic of the block copolymers, the AuNPs can be successfully transferred from DMF into aqueous solution. An unexpected red shift of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of the AuNPs after solvent transfer is observed, which is mainly attributed to the dense protecting polymer layers on the surfaces of the AuNPs in aqueous solutions. Both the size and structure of nanoparticles are maintained after solvent transfer. The AuNPs in aqueous solutions can be stable for a wide range of pH value up to pH≈9. At strong basic condition with pH>10, the AuNPs will aggregate. The effect of pH value on the stability of the AuNPs is reversible. The optical property of the AuNPs also slightly depends on the pH value.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of a group of new composites, namely, gold nanoparticles-cored dendrimers (Au-NCDs) were reported. These materials were obtained by the reduction of hydrogen tetrachloroaurate phase-transferred into organic phase in the presence of poly(benzyl ether) alcohol dendrons with generation from 1 to 3. These materials, possessing nanometer-sized gold particles at the core and dendritic wedges radially connected to the core by Au–O bonds, were analyzed by UV–vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The effects of generation of dendrons, concentration of precursor and reduction agent were discussed. A possible mechanism of the formation of Au-NCDs was proposed.
β-Cyclodextrin polymer networks stabilized gold nanoparticle with superior catalytic activities

Abstract:Support materials play a significant role in heterogeneous nanocatalysis. In this work, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was used directly as a monomer to construct polymer networks for gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) immobilization. Using the simple nucleophilic substitution reaction, β-CD based polymer networks (β-CDP-N and β-CDP-C) were successfully prepared. Compared to β-CDP-C, the hydroxyl groups and N atoms in β-CDP-N played a synergistic role in immobilizing smaller Au NPs, thus leading to high catalytic activities. Notably, the apparent rate constant (Kapp) value for Au@ β-CDP-N in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol is 14.15 × 10−2 s−1, which shows a significant improvement over all previously reported Au NPs with solid supports under similar conditions. Considering the negligible porosity of the β-CDP-N support, we purposed a “capture-catalysis-release” model to explain the high catalytic activity of Au@ β-CDP-N. This explanation is supported by the guest-responsive properties of β-CDP-N. Moreover, the Au@ β-CDP-N is easily recycled and maintained its high catalytic efficiency after seven successful cycles.

Synthesis of Ultrastable and Multifunctional Gold Nanoclusters with Enhanced Fluorescence and Potential Anticancer Drug Delivery Application

Abstract:The problem of stability hinders the practical applications of nanomaterials. In this research, an innovative and simple synthetic method was developed for preparing ultrastable and multifunctional gold nanoclusters (Au NCs). HS-C11-EG6-X is a class of molecules consisting of four components: a mercapto group (-SH), an alkyl chain (C11), a short chain of polyethylene glycols (EG6) and a functional group (X, X=OH, COOH, NH2, GRGD, etc). The present work demonstrated the importance of using HS-C11-EG6-X to prepare Au NCs with excellent properties and the role each component in this molecule played for synthesizing Au NCs. Au NCs with tunable surface functionalities were successfully synthesized and characterized. It was found that Au NC precursors had a fluorescent quantum yield of 0.4%; in contrast, after capping with HS-C11-EG6-X, the quantum yield significantly increased to 1.3-2.6%. The HS-C11-EG6-X capped Au NCs exhibited superior stability under various solution conditions (including extreme pH, high salt concentration, phosphate buffered saline and cell medium) for at least 6 months, even after conjugation with anticancer drug doxorubicin. Besides, we have also demonstrated that other commonly employed thiol-containing ligands failed to prepare stable fluorescent Au NCs. Moreover, the Au NCs showed negligible toxicity to A549 lung cancer cells up to 100 μM, and the application of the ultrastable Au NCs for anticancer drug delivery has also been demonstrated.
Combined Facile Synthesis, Purification, and Surface Functionalization Approach Yields Monodispersed Gold Nanorods for Drug Delivery Applications

Abstract:Synthesizing gold nanorods (AuNRs) by seed-mediated growth method results in the presence of undesired size and shape particles by-products occupying 10-90% of the population. In this study, AuNRs are synthesized by the seed-mediated growth method using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a surfactant. AuNRs with redshifted longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LLSPR) peak, localized in the biological "transparency window" (650-1350 nm), are synthesized after optimizing seed solution, silver nitrate solution, and hydrochloric acid solution volumes, based on the published protocols. A two-step purification method, dialysis followed by centrifugation, is applied to remove excess CTAB and collect LLSPR-redshifted AuNRs with high rod purity (>90%). CTAB is subsequently exchanged with polyethylene glycol (PEG) to improve AuNRs biocompatibility. PEGylated AuNRs are confirmed innocuous to both SN4741 cells and B16F10 cells by the modified MTT assay and the modified lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay up to 1 nm and 24 h incubation. In this study, a combined facile synthesis, purification, and surface functionalization approach is proposed to obtain water-dispersible monodispersed AuNRs for drug delivery applications.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) within 10 nm prepared and stabilized by environmentally friendly reducing and supporting agents are highly desired to obtain excellent catalytic properties for organic transformation. In this paper, a rapid and mild strategy for synthesizing ultra-fine AuNPs is reported by using dialdehyde cellulose nanocrystals (DACNCs) as both efficient reductant, dispersant and template for the first time. DACNCs with higher content of aldehyde groups, acting as multi-role player, are crucial to limit the size of AuNPs within 10 nm. Furthermore, AuNPs with average diameter of 5.1 ± 1.0 nm are quantitative obtained at ambient temperature by reducing chloroauric acid within 1 h under conditions of pH= 10.8, 53% aldehyde content, 0.4% DACNCs and 0.25 mM gold ions. In addition, a quantitative method for monitoring the exhaustion of gold ions is established to clarify the synthetic mechanism of AuNPs. Finally, reduction of 4-nitrophenol under AuNPs catalysis is conducted to verify the superiority of as-prepared ultra-fine AuNPs.

Abstract:In this work, a new capping agent, cinnamic acid (CA) was used to synthesize Au nanoparticles (NPs) under ambient conditions. The size of the NPs can be controlled by adjusting the concentration of reductant (in our experiment sodium borohydride was used) or CA. The CA-stabilized Au NPs can self-assemble into ‘nanowire-like’ or ‘pearl-necklace-like’ nanostructures by adjusting the molar ratio of CA to HAuCl4 or by tuning the pH value of the Au colloidal solution. The process of Au NPs self-assembly was investigated by UV–vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The results reveal that the induced dipole–dipole interaction is the driving force of Au NP linear assemblies.
Controlled Synthesis of Dendritic Gold Nanostructures Assisted by Supramolecular Complexes of Surfactant with Cyclodextrin

Abstract:Controlled synthesis of well-defined planar Au nanodendrites with a symmetric single-crystalline structure consisting of trunks and side branches grown along the 211 directions was realized by reducing chloroauric acid in aqueous mixed solutions of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD). It has been revealed that the formation of the supramolecular complexes of DTAB with beta-CD due to host-guest interaction is indispensable for the fabrication of these unique planar Au nanodendrites, and a proper CD-to-DTAB molar ratio is essential to their exclusive formation. A variety of Au nanostructures, such as branched particles consisting of rodlike branches and flowerlike particles consisting of platelike petals, could be readily obtained by simply changing the CD-to-DTAB molar ratio. Moreover, the obtained Au nanodendrites exhibited both a good electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of methanol and a good surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensitivity for detecting p-aminothiophenol (PATP) molecules, indicating their potential applications including catalysis, biosensing, and nanodevices.

In our current work, an azobenzene-modified beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) derivative that can form a self-inclusion complex in aqueous solution was prepared. The self-included beta-CD derivative was then functionalized onto a gold nanoparticle (AuNP) surface via a ligand-exchange reaction in aqueous solution, leading to the formation of AuNP-[1]rotaxane hybrids. Corresponding non-self-included beta-CD derivative functionalized AuNPs were also developed in a DMF/H2O mixture solution for control experiments. These hybrids were fully characterized by UV-vis and circular dichroism spectroscopies, together with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The competitive binding behavior of the hybrids with an adamantane dimer was investigated.

Abstract:The advancement of gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) has given rise to a new era in fabricating functional materials due to their controllable morphology, stable optical properties, and excellent biocompatibility. Assemblies based on Au NCs demonstrate significant potentiality in constructing multiple structures as acceptable agents in applications such as sensing, imaging technology, and drug delivery systems. In addition, the assembled strategies illustrate the integration mechanism between each component while facing material requirement. It is necessary to provide supplementary and comprehensive reviews on the assembled functional structures (based Au NCs), which hold promise for applications and could expand their functional range and potential applications. This review focuses on the assembled structures of Au NCs in combination with metals, metal oxides, and non-metal materials, which are intricately arranged through various interaction forces including covalent bonds and metal coordination, resulting in a diverse array of multifunctional Au NC assemblies. These assemblies have widespread applications in fields such as biological imaging, drug delivery, and optical devices. The review concludes by highlighting the challenges and future prospects of Au NC assemblies, emphasizing the importance of continued research to advance nanomaterial assembly innovation.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles capping with natural cyclodextrins are synthesized with precisely tunable sizes ranging from 9 to 20 nm, exhibiting remarkable colloidal stability and catalytic activity, highlighting host‐guest molecular recognition on nano‐surface. Gold nanoparticles capping with three types of natural cyclodextrins are synthesized, allowing for precise control over their sizes ranging from 9 to 20 nm. These nanoparticles exhibit remarkable colloidal stability during long‐term storage, as well as excellent tolerance to saline, acidic, and alkaline conditions. Importantly, the assembly of nanoparticles is performed by using the silica nanospheres functionalized with cinnamyl group and the gold nanoparticle capping with three types of cyclodextrin, highlighting the selective formation of core‐satellite superstructure based on the host–guest molecular recognition on nano‐surface between different nanoparticles.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been shown to be useful as carriers of various anticancer drugs as well as diagnosis platforms. In this review, we discuss the synthesis and physiochemical properties of AuNPs. We also highlight the photothermal and photodynamic properties of AuNPs and relevant applications in therapeutic studies. Furthermore, we review the applications of AuNPs in cancer treatment as well as their underlying anticancer mechanisms in multiple types of cancer.

Abstract:Chitosan (CS), a kind of naturally produced polysaccharide with extraordinary biocompatibility and biodegradation, shows much potential to act as reducing and stabilizing agent in the synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for drug delivery. To solve the poor solubility and expand the pharmaceutical applications of CS, various CS derivatives through rational design have been developed and further used to prepare, stabilize, and mediate self-assembling of gold materials. Herein, we chose sulfonic chitosan as a stabilizing reagent for the synthesis of highly stable AuNPs (AuNP/SCSs) with diameters of about 3 nm. For investigating their surface electronic payload of charged drugs, the negatively charged fluorescence isothiocyanate (FITC) and positively charged Rhodamine B (Rb) were used as models to be modified on the surface of the AuNP/SCSs via a layer-by-layer (LbL) method. With a basis of the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) principle, via adjusting the distance between AuNPs and fluorescent molecules by tuning the layers of charged polymers, the regulation of the fluorescence intensity of the fluorescent molecules has been achieved. In addition, the drug loading efficiency was investigated.
