Abstract:Motivated by the integrated complexity of real-time intelligent control and optimization of industrial/manufacturing processes, this paper discusses hybrid modelling and asymptotic periodic behavior of a, class of switched discrete event systems, and shows how to evaluate the asymptotic performance/efficiency of such systems. We prove that, under some mild conditions, the switched discrete event system will achieve asymptotic periodic dynamics, and its performance/efficiency can be evaluated by calculating the eigenvalue of certain matrix in max-plus algebra. Illustrative examples are provided.

Abstract:Based on max-plus algebra, a class of discrete event processes can be described by linear recursive equations[1]. Such a system exhibits asymptotic periodic behavior, and its performance can be evaluated by calculating the eigenvalue of the system matrix in max-plus algebra. On the other hand, control techniques based on switching among different controllers have been explored extensively in recent years, where they have been shown to achieve better dynamic performance[2]. This paper proposes a new model for a class of switched discrete event systems. Such a model consists of a finite set of discrete event subsystems, and a switching law that orchestrates the switching among them. We show that, the switched system can be transformed into a non-switched system, and under certain conditions, the switched system exhibits asymptotic periodic behavior, and its performance can be evaluated by calculating the eigenvalue of certain matrix in max-plus algebra.

Based on Lyapunov stability theory, two different sufficient conditions ar e derived via LMI approach for the asymptotic stability under arbitrary switchin g. Furthermore, this paper develops the convex combination conditions for asympt otic stability of such systems and gives the way to choose switching strategy. T he simulation result proves the validity of the designed switching strategy.

Abstract:This paper studies periodic stabilization of a class of switched linear systems. The concepts of periodically asymptotical stabilizability(PAS) and periodically exponential stabilizability(PES) are first introduced. First, for the continuous-time case, a necessary and sufficient condition for PAS is established. Then, it is proved that PES is equivalent to PAS, and controllability is equivalent to PES with arbitrary decaying rate, respectively. The corresponding algorithms are given as well. Finally, a numerical examples are given to illustrate our results.

Abstract:In this paper, a class of discrete-time singularly perturbed switched systems (SPSSs) with persistent dwell-time (PDT) switching law is firstly proposed. Using the slow-state feedback control method, sufficient conditions to ensure the global uniform exponential stability of the closed-loop PDT SPSSs are derived. Based on the aforementioned conditions, the analyses of the extended dissipative performance of the closed-loop PDT SPSSs and a preferable decoupling method deriving the mode-dependent controller gains are given for the first time. Finally, the potential practicability of the method is verified by a purely numerical example and a tunnel diode circuit model, and a convex optimization method calculating the upper bound of the singular perturbation parameter is provided.

Abstract:This note studies the asymptotic stability of switched positive linear discrete systems whose subsystems are (sp) matrices. Such a matrix is the character of a kind of asymptotically stable linear systems and it is very easy to test. A new definition of (sp) matrix is given by means of graph theory. Based on an approaching using partially ordered semigroups and Lie algebras, we present several new criteria for asymptotic stability. We also derive an algebraic condition and discuss a kind of higher order difference equation. Our results have a robustness property to some extent.

Abstract:This paper studies a quadratic performance certificate in terms of an upper bound and a lower bound for switched linear systems over all admissible dwell-time switching signals. The infinite-horizon performance is reformulated into the summation of the finite-horizon performance for each subsystem over switching intervals that can be calculated by solving a family of differential Riccati equations. The time-varying positive definite solutions are exploited to construct a novel piecewise quadratic Lyapunov function for the closed-loop system, which guarantees that the Lyapunov function is decreasing at and between the switching instants. This decreasing property results in consistency between the piecewise quadratic Lyapunov function for switched systems and standard quadratic Lyapunov function for non-switched systems, based on which an upper bound of the quadratic performance is obtained by referring to the techniques for non-switched systems. In addition, a lower bound is established by solving a family of algebraic Riccati equations. The effectiveness of the guaranteed performance control method is illustrated by making use of a numerical example.

Abstract:This paper investigates stability and control design problems with performance analysis for discrete-time switched linear systems. The switched Lyapunov function method is combined with Finsler's Lemma to generate various tests in the enlarged space containing both the state and its time difference, allowing extra degree of freedom for stability analysis and control design. Two performance measures being considered are the decay rate and the input-output performance. A new LMI based stability test for the existence of switched Lyapunov functions is first developed. If a switched Lyapunov function exists, asymptotic stability of the switched system also implies its exponential stability. An LMI optimization problem is then formulated to find a bound on the decay rate of the system. To attain the bound, state feedback control gains are designed. Using the same framework and the well-known S-procedure, a generalized sufficient LMI condition is obtained which guarantees a $\gamma$. performance of the closed-loop switched systems subject to input disturbances.

Abstract:This article investigates the event-triggered switching control (ETSC) of switched nonlinear time-delay systems (SNTDSs) with asynchronous switching. First, we study the input-to-state stability (ISS) and integral ISS (iISS) for SNTDSs with asynchronous switching, where switching instants are generated based on the designed event-triggered mechanism. Among existing works on the ETSC, systems behavior at event-triggered instants is neglected. In fact, whenever an event is triggered, the systems mode will jump suddenly such that a switch is imposed to the systems, leading to the change of subsystems. Moreover, asynchronous switching behavior may occur between the actual subsystem and its corresponding controller. These facts bring great challenges for the event-triggered mechanism design and ISS analysis. To tackle these problems, a new Lyapunov-based event-triggered mechanism with adjustable parameters is designed to establish the relationship between systems switches and event triggers, and exclude the Zeno phenomenon. The analysis of the asynchronous switching behavior can be implemented and some ISS and iISS criteria of SNTDSs are derived utilizing the merging switching technique. Finally, two numerical examples, including a practical stirred tank reactor system, are presented to show the validity of the proposed methods.

Abstract:The stabilization problem for a class of switched linear systems is investigated in the network environment. Both the synchronous and asynchronous cases are considered according to the availability of the current activated system mode to the actuator. The random communication delay is assumed to be Markovian, resulting in a sampled-data synchronous or asynchronous switched system with Markovian delay as the closed-loop system. We extend the discretization approach to deal with such sampled-data system through exploring the stability conditions of the corresponding discrete-time system. For the asynchronous case, we formulate the closed-loop system as a hybrid system with the switching between its subsystems governed by a switching signal and a Markov chain. By studying the switching number and one-step reachable mode set of the constructed vector-valued switching signal, the exponential mean-square stability (EMSS) conditions and the corresponding mode-dependent controller are obtained with a more general constraint on the designed switching signal. These results are finally verified by two illustrated numerical examples.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the stability problem of randomly switched systems. By using the probability analysis method, the almost surely globally asymptotical stability and almost surely exponential stability are investigated for switched systems with semi-Markovian switching, Markovian switching, and renewal process switching signals, respectively. Two examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed results, in which an example of consensus of multiagent systems with nonlinear dynamics is taken into account.

Abstract:This work focuses on stability of switching diffusions, in which both continuous dynamics and discrete events coexist. Our attention is devoted to the case that one has asymptotic stability but the decay rates are slower than exponential. The main effort is on obtaining asymptotic results in the almost sure sense. Sufficient conditions are provided for switching diffusion systems whose switching component depends on the diffusion process. Then Markovian regime-switching diffusions are treated, in which weaker conditions are needed. In addition, systems with delays are also treated. Examples are provided to demonstrate our results.

Abstract:This paper discusses the asymptotic stability of the nonlinear stochastic differential equations with Markovian switching (SDEWMSs). The equations under consideration are more general, whose transition jump rates matrix Q is not precisely known. By using the switching process jump times to subdivide the “time” and then investigate the related sequence, we provide sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability of SDEWMSs when each subsystem is stable and a certain “slow switching” condition holds. For the general multi-dimensional linear SDEWMSs, sufficient conditions via bi-linear matrix inequalities are also proposed for the design of robust stabilization. Some examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of our results.

Abstract:This paper mainly concerns the issue of asynchronously switched control for a class of continuous-time switched linear systems with persistent dwell time (PDT). Asynchronous switching implies that when a subsystem switches the matched controller remains active for a finite period of time, such that the Lyapunov-like function increases. A semi-time-dependent (STD) multiple Lyapunov-like function with special form suitable to asynchronously switched systems is proposed, upon which a set of STD and mode-dependent stabilizing controllers is designed. The validity and advantage of the proposed results is demonstrated through a numerical example.

Abstract:This paper studies the stability analysis problem for the discrete-time two-dimensional (2-D) switched systems under arbitrary and restricted switchings, which are formulated by the well-known Fornasini-Marchesini local state-space (FMLSS) model. Stability conditions are established for discrete-time 2-D switched systems under both arbitrary and restricted switching signals, respectively. The extended average dwell time approach is proposed and then utilized for the restricted switching case. Finally, one example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Abstract:This paper investigates the stability of both linear and nonlinear switched systems with sequence-based average preceding dwell time (SBAPDT) and sequence-based average subsequent dwell time (SBASDT). Different from existing work, we take the sequence of switch events into consideration. These two new analysis methods have the potential of reducing the conservativeness of the threshold time in continuous- and discrete-time systems. A comparative numerical example is also given to demonstrate the advantages of the new approaches. It shows that the designed controllers and calculated average dwell time thresholds are better than other methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that a fast switch is able to lead a complex dynamical system to being asymptotically stable, although this system is completely unstable in every switch duration and even the associated connection matrices are randomly selected. Importantly, we define some new exponents by which we can figure out the essential patterns that guarantee the stability of fast switching systems, and besides, their calculations need little computational cost. More interestingly, we show the efficiency of some random switches in inducing stability through a comparison of the systems with different switch connection matrices and switch durations, and we give a design method for obtaining higher efficient random switch rules. We also investigate the generalization of the obtained results to a more realistic case where the switch obeys some renewal process.
Switch Simulations Based on Workload Pattern Generation and Smoothed Periodic Input

Abstract:Simulation is crucial to performance evaluation of switches. Currently stochastic simulation is the predominant approach, which has two drawbacks: few workload patterns and long simulation times. In this paper, we propose a novel switch simulation method that is based on two techniques: exhaustive workload pattern generation and smoothed periodic input generation. The exhaustive workload pattern generation can produce a huge number of nonuniform workload patterns, which far exceeds the traditional few ones; conclusions based on such truly extensive simulations are much more convincing. The periodic input or cell arrival pattern outperforms the stochastic counterpart in terms of easy repetition and fast convergence of simulation; in particular, among periodic inputs, the smoothed periodic input is most favorable to switch scheduling, and hence switches performing poor with it probably performs worse under others. Combining these two techniques together can systematically identify lots of stuck states at which some switches show poor performances such as low throughput. Specifically, this method discovers that the throughput of iSLIP, FIRM and DRRM, each with one iteration, may be lower than 60% under certain nonuniform and smoothed periodic traffic pattern.
