Abstract:We study the structure of the Mordell--Weil groups of semiabelian varieties over large algebraic extensions of a finitely generated field of characteristic zero. We consider two types of algebraic extensions in this paper; one is of extensions obtained by adjoining the coordinates of certain points of various semiabelian varieties; the other is of extensions obtained as the fixed subfield in an algebraically closed field by a finite number of automorphisms. Some of such fields turn out to be new examples of Kummer-faithful fields which are not sub-$p$-adic. Among them, we find both examples of Kummer-faithful fields over which the Mordell--Weil group modulo torsion can be free of infinite rank and not free.

Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$. Greenberg has posed a question whether the structure of the fine Selmer group over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $\mathbb{Q}$ can be described by cyclotomic polynomials in a certain precise manner. A recent work of Lei has made progress on this problem by proving that the fine Mordell-Weil group (in the sense of Wuthrich) does have this required property. The goal of this paper is study the analogous question of Greenberg over various $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of an imaginary quadratic field $F$. In particular, when the elliptic curve has complex multiplication by the ring of integers of the imaginary quadratic field, we obtain analogous results of Lei over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension and anti-cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $F$. In the event that the elliptic curve has good ordinary reduction at the prime $p$, we further obtain a result over the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $F$ unramified outside precisely one of the prime of $F$ above $p$. Finally, we study the situation of an elliptic curve over the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension under the generalized Heegner hypothesis. Along the way, we establish an analogous result for the BDP-Selmer group. This latter result is then applied to obtain a relation between the BDP $p$-adic $L$-function and the Mordell-Weil rank growth in the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the study of the fine Selmer group of an abelian variety over a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension which is not necessarily cyclotomic. It has been conjectured that these fine Selmer groups are always torsion over $\mathbb{Z}_p[[\Gamma]]$, where $\Gamma$ is the Galois group of the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension in question. In this paper, we shall provide several strong evidences towards this conjecture. Namely, we show that the conjectural torsionness is consistent with the pseudo-nullity conjecture of Coates-Sujatha. We also show that if the conjecture is known for the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension, then it holds for almost all $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions. We then carry out a similar study for the fine Selmer group of an elliptic modular form. When the modular forms are ordinary and come from a Hida family, we relate the torsionness of the fine Selmer groups of the specialization. This latter result allows us to show that the conjectural torsionness in certain cases is consistent with the growth number conjecture of Mazur. Finally, we end with some speculations on the torsionness of fine Selmer groups over an arbitrary $p$-adic Lie extension.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime number and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field in which $p$ is split. Let $f$ be a modular form with good reduction at $p$. We study the variation of the Bloch--Kato Selmer groups and the Bloch--Kato--Shafarevich--Tate groups of $f$ over the anticyclotomic $\mathbf{Z}_p$-extension $K_\infty$ of $K$. In particular, we show that under the generalized Heegner hypothesis, if the $p$-localization of the generalized Heegner cycle attached to $f$ is primitive and certain local conditions hold, then the Pontryagin dual of the Selmer group of $f$ over $K_\infty$ is free over the Iwasawa algebra. Consequently, the Bloch--Kato--Shafarevich--Tate groups of $f$ vanish. This generalizes earlier works of Matar and Matar--Nekovář on elliptic curves. Furthermore, our proof applies uniformly to the ordinary and non-ordinary settings.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a fixed odd prime and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field in which $p$ splits. Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over $K$ with supersingular reduction at both primes above $p$ in $K$. Under certain assumptions, we give a growth estimate for the Mordell--Weil rank of $A$ over finite extensions inside the $\mathbb{Z}_p^2$-extension of $K$. In the last section, written by Chris Williams, he includes some speculative remarks on the $p$-adic $L$-functions for $\mathrm{GSp}(4)$ corresponding to the multi-signed Selmer groups constructed in this paper.

Abstract:For a prime p, we study the Galois groups of maximal pro-$p$ extensions of imaginary quadratic fields unramified outside a finite set $S$, where $S$ consists of one or two finite places not lying above $p$. When $p$ is odd, we give explicit presentations of these Galois groups under certain conditions. As an application, we determine the structure of the maximal pro-$3$ extension of $\mathbb{Q}(i)$ unramified outside two specific finite places.

Abstract:Let $\ell$ and $p$ be distinct primes, and let $\Gamma$ be an abelian pro-$p$-group. We study the structure of the algebra $\Lambda:=\mathbb{Z}_\ell[[\Gamma]]$ and of $\Lambda$-modules. In the case $\Gamma\simeq \mathbb{Z}_p^d$, we consider a $\mathbb{Z}_p^d$-extension $K/k$ of a global field $k$ and use the structure theorems to provide explicit formulas for the orders and $\ell$-ranks of certain Iwasawa modules (namely $\ell$-class groups and $\ell$-Selmer groups) associated with the finite subextensions of $K$. We apply this new approach to provide different proofs and generalizations of results of Washington and Sinnott on $\ell$-class groups.

We study Mazur's conjecture on the growth of the Mordell--Weil ranks of an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ over $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of an imaginary quadratic field, where $p$ is a prime of good reduction for $E$. In particular, we obtain criteria that may be checked through explicit calculation, thus allowing for the verification of Mazur's conjecture in specific examples.

Abstract:Fix two distinct primes $p$ and $\ell$. Let $A$ be an abelian variety over $\mathbf{Q}(\zeta_{\ell})$, the cyclotomic field of $\ell$-th roots of unity. Suppose that $A(\mathbf{Q}(\zeta_{\ell}))[\ell] \neq 0$. We show that there exists a number field $L$ and a $\mathbf{Z}_p$ extension $L_{\infty}/L$ where the $\ell$-primary fine Selmer group of $A$ grows arbitrarily quickly. This is a fine Selmer group analogue of a theorem of Washington which says that there are certain (non-cyclotomic) $\mathbf{Z}_p$-extensions where the $\ell$-part of the class group can grow arbitrarily quickly. We also prove this for a wide class of non-commutative $p$-adic Lie extensions. Finally, we include several examples to illustrate this theorem.

On p-torsions of geometric Brauer groups

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective integral variety over a finitely generated field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. We show that the finiteness of the exponent of the $p$-primary part of $\mathrm{Br}(X_{k^s})^{G_k}$ is equivalent to the Tate conjecture for divisors, generalizing D'Addezio's theorem for abelian varieties to arbitrary smooth projective varieties. In combination with the Leray spectral sequence for rigid cohomology derived from the Berthelot conjecture recently proved by Ertl-Vezzani, we show that the cokernel of $\mathrm{Br}_{\mathrm{nr}}(K(X)) \rightarrow \mathrm{Br}(X_{k^s})^{G_k}$ is of finite exponent. This completes the $p$-primary part of the generalization of Artin-Grothendieck's theorem on relations between Brauer groups and Tate-Shafarevich groups to higher relative dimensions.

Abstract:Consider a function field $K$ with characteristic $p>0$. We investigate the $\Lambda$-module structure of the Mordell-Weil group of an abelian variety over $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of $K$, generalizing results due to Lee. Next, we study the algebraic structure and prove a control theorem for the S-fine Mordell-Weil groups, the function field analogue for Wuthrich's fine Mordell-Weil groups, over a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$. In case of unramified $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension, $K_\infty$, we compute the characteristic ideal of the Pontryagin dual of the S-fine Mordell group. This provides an answer to an analogue of Greenberg's question for the characteristic ideal of the dual fine Selmer group in the function field setup. In the $\ell\neq p$ case, we prove the triviality of the $\mu$-invariant for the Selmer group (same as the fine Selmer group in this case) of an elliptic curve over a non-commutative $GL_2(\mathbb{Z}_\ell)$-extension of $K$ and thus extending Conjecture A. In the $\ell=p$ case, we compute the change of $\mu$-invariants of the dual Selmer groups of elliptic curves under isogeny, giving a lower bound for the $\mu$-invariant.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a class of $2$-dimensional formal groups over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ that provide a higher-dimensional analogue of the usual $1$-dimensional Lubin-Tate formal groups, then we initiate the study of the extensions generated by their $p^{n}$-torsion points. For instance, we prove that the coordinates of the $p^{\infty}$-torsion points of such a formal group generate an abelian extension over a certain unramified extension of $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$, and we study some ramification properties of these abelian extensions. In particular, we prove that the extension generated by the coordinates of the $p$-torsion points is in general totally ramified.

Abstract:We study the arithmetic of abelian varieties over $K=k(t)$ where $k$ is an arbitrary field. The main result relates Mordell-Weil groups of certain Jacobians over $K$ to homomorphisms of other Jacobians over $k$. Our methods also yield completely explicit points on elliptic curves with unbounded rank over $\Fpbar(t)$ and a new construction of elliptic curves with moderately high rank over $\C(t)$.

Abstract:Let $k = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt {-m})$ and $p > 2$ split in $k$. We prove new properties of the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions $K/k$, distinct from the cyclotomic; we do not assume $K/k$ totally ramified, nor the triviality of the $p$-class group of $k$. These properties are governed by the $p$-valuation, $\delta_p(k)$, of a suitable Fermat quotient of the fundamental $p$-unit $x$ of $k$, which also yields the order of the logarithmic class group (2.2, App. A), and generalize the Gold-Sands criterion (5.1, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5). These results use the second element $(\mathcal{H}_{K_n}/\mathcal{H}_{K_n}^{G_n})^{G_n}$ of the filtration of the $p$-class groups in $K=\cup_n K_n$, without any argument of Iwasawa's theory, and provide new perspectives. We compute, Sec. 7, the first layer $K_1$, using the Log-function, then give a short proof of a result of Kundu-Washington (5.6), and show (7.4, 7.6) that capitulation is possible in $K$, suggesting Conjecture 5.8. Calculations are gathered App. B.

Abstract:For an odd prime $p$ and an unramified maximal torus $H $ of $\mathrm{GL}_{2/\mathbf{Q}_p}$, inspired by work of Loeffler-Skinner-Zerbes, we construct natural $H(\mathbf{Q}_p)$-stable lattices in spaces of functions on $\left(\mathrm{GL}_2\times H\right)(\mathbf{Q}_p)$ and positively answer a conjecture of Loeffler. These local lattices give rise to canonical Hecke operators in local spherical Hecke algebras, that enjoy certain integrality properties away from $p$, with respect to equivariant maps into any smooth $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbf{Q}_p)$-representation. In the process, we also obtain integral results on $H$-invariant periods for local unramified Whittaker type representations, and global automorphic representations attached to cuspidal Hecke eigenforms.

Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ with good ordinary reduction at a prime $p\geq 5$, and let $F$ be an imaginary quadratic field. Under appropriate assumptions, we show that the Pontryagin dual of the fine Mordell-Weil group of $E$ over the $\mathbb{Z}_p^2$-extension of $F$ is pseudo-null as a module over the Iwasawa algebra of the group $\mathbb{Z}_p^2$.

Algebraization of Mochizuki's anabelian variation of ring structures, perfectoid geometry and formal groups

Abstract:Let $M$ be a multiplicative monoid with identity. Then I show that there is a universal one dimensional formal group law equipped with an action of $M$. If $M$ is $p$-perfect (i.e. $m\mapsto m^p$ is an isomorphism for some prime number $p$) then the universal $M$-formal group law comes equipped with a natural Frobenius endomorphism. There are a number of concrete applications of this result. If $K$ is a $p$-adic field and $\mathcal{O}=\mathcal{O}_K$ is the multiplicative monoid of the ring of integers of $K$, then there is a universal formal group (over a suitable (non-zero) ring) which is equipped with an action of the multiplicative monoid $\mathcal{O}$. Lubin-Tate formal groups arise from this universal monoid formal group law. This has applications to Mochizuki's anabelian ideas: if two p-adic fields have isomorphic absolute Galois groups then they have isomorphic multiplicative monoids $\mathcal{O}$ (but possibly non-isomorphic ring structures). The existence of the universal monoid formal group law for the monoid $\mathcal{O}$ implies that the additive structures of a ring can be interpolated into a universal algebraic family (while keeping the multiplicative structure of the ring fixed). Here is another important example covered by my result: let $R$ be a perfectoid ring and let $R^\flat$ be its tilt and the multiplicative monoid $R^\flat$ of $R^\flat$. Then there exists a universal monoid formal group law for this monoid which interpolates the additive structures of untilts with tilt $R^\flat$. Thus in some sense one has a unified approach to various phenomenon which are well-known in anabelian geometry and in perfectoid geometry. These results also provide a natural number field version of Fontaine's fundamental ring $A_{inf}$ of $p$-adic Hodge Theory (Remark~4.2.4).

Abstract:In this paper, we study rational sections of the relative Picard scheme of a linear system on a smooth projective variety. We prove that if the linear system is basepoint-free and the locus of non-integral divisors has codimension at least two, then all rational sections of the relative Picard scheme come from restrictions of line bundles on the variety. As a consequence, we describe the group of sections of the Hitchin fibration for moduli spaces of Higgs bundles on curves.

We extend the equivalence of categories between Fontaine-Laffaille modules and $\mathbb{Z}_p$ lattices inside crystalline representations with Hodge-Tate weights at most $p-2$ of Fontaine and Laffaille to the situation where the base ring is the power series ring over the Witt vectors $ W(k)[\![ t_1, \cdots , t_d]\!]$ and where the base ring is a $p$-adically complete ring that is étale over the Tate Algebra $W(k)\langle t_1^{\pm 1}, \cdots , t_d^{\pm 1}\rangle$.

Abstract:We prove that the Mazur-Tate elements of an eigenform $f$ sit inside the Fitting ideals of the corresponding dual Selmer groups along the cyclotomic $\mathbb Z_p$-extension (up to scaling by a single constant). Our method begins with the construction of local cohomology classes built via the $p$-adic local Langlands correspondence. From these classes, we build algebraic analogues of the Mazur-Tate elements which we directly verify sit in the appropriate Fitting ideals. Using Kato's Euler system and explicit reciprocity laws, we prove that these algebraic elements divide the corresponding Mazur-Tate elements, implying our theorem.
