Abstract:We present an analysis of the pairing resonances observed in photo-double-ionization studies of CnHm aromatic molecules with multiple benzene-like rings. The analysis, which is based on the Coulomb pairing model, is applied to naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene, pyrene and coronene, all of which have six-member rings, and azulene which is comprised of a five-member and a seven-member ring. There is a high energy resonance at ~ 40 eV that is found in all of the molecules cited and is associated with paired electrons localized on carbon sites on the perimeter of the molecule, each of which having two carbon sites as nearest neighbors. The low energy resonance at 10 eV, which is found only in pyrene and coronene, is attributed to the formation of paired electrons localized on arrays of interior carbon atoms that have the point symmetry of the molecule with each carbon atom having three nearest neighbors. The origin of the anomalous increase in the doubly charged to singly charged parent-ion ratio that is found above the 40 eV resonance in all of the cited molecules except coronene is discussed.

Abstract:It is shown that the M$^{2+}$ ion yield in the double photoionization of the aromatic hydrocarbons, pyrene and coronene, can be expressed as a superposition of a contribution from a resonance involving carbon atoms on the perimeter and coherent contributions from carbon atoms inside the perimeter. In the case of pyrene, the two interior atoms are associated with a resonance peak at 10 eV and linear behavior above 75 eV. The resonance peak is an optically excited state of the interior carbon pair. The linear behavior arises from the coherent emission of two electrons with equal energy and opposite momenta, as occurs in pyrrole. Coronene has a low energy peak along with two pairing resonances, however, the linear region as in the case of pyrene is absent. The low energy resonance is associated with the atoms on the perimeter and the high energy resonance is associated with the hexagonal array of six carbon atoms at the center of the molecule. It is proposed that the quasi-independence of the contributions from the perimeter and interior atoms is related to Hückel's Rule for the stability of aromatic hydrocarbons.

Origin of the low energy resonance in the double photoionization of pyrene and coronene, and its absence in the double photoionization of corannulene

Abstract:The low energy resonance in the double photoionization of the aromatic hydrocarbons pyrene (C$_{16}$H$_{10}$) and coronene (C$_{24}$H$_{12}$) is investigated theoretically using an approach based on the one-dimension Hubbard model for $\pi$-conjugated systems with nearest-neighbor interactions. The Independent Subsystem Approximation, where the perimeter and interior carbon atoms are treated as independent entities, is employed. Since no low energy resonances have been found in aromatic hydrocarbons where there are only perimeter carbon atoms, we attribute the low energy resonances in pyrene and coronene to the interior carbon atoms. However, corannulene (C$_{20}$H$_{10}$) having five interior carbon atoms does not exhibit a low-energy resonance in the experimental data. We attribute the absence of this resonance to the odd number of interior carbon atoms.

Abstract:Spin-spin interactions between two identical aromatic radicals have been studied extensively and utilized to establish supramolecular recognition. Here we report that spin-pairing interactions could also take place between two different π-electron radicals, namely a bipyridinium radical cation (BPY+•) and a naphthalene-1,8:4,5-bis(dicarboximide) radical anion (NDI─•). The occurrence of this type of previously unreported hetero radical-pairing interactions is attributed to enhancement effect of Coulombic attraction between these two radicals bearing opposite charges. The Coulombic-enhanced hetero radical pairing interactions are employed to drive host-guest recognition, as well as the reversible switching of a bistable [2]rotaxane.
Electron Correlations and Two-Photon States in Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Molecules: A Peculiar Role of Geometry

Abstract:We present numerical studies of one- and two-photon excited states ordering in a number of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules: coronene, hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene and circumcoronene, all possessing $D_{6h}$ point group symmetry versus ovalene with $D_{2h}$ symmetry, within the Pariser-Parr-Pople model of interacting $\pi$-electrons. The calculated energies of the two-photon states as well as their relative two-photon absorption cross-sections within the interacting model are qualitatively different from single-particle descriptions. More remarkably, a peculiar role of molecular geometry is found. The consequence of electron correlations is far stronger for ovalene, where the lowest spin-singlet two-photon state is a quantum superposition of pairs of lowest spin triplet states, as in the linear polyenes. The same is not true for $D_{6h}$ group hydrocarbons. Our work indicates significant covalent character, in valence bond language, of the ground state, the lowest spin triplet state and a few of the lowest two-photon states in $D_{2h}$ ovalene but not in those with $D_{6h}$ symmetry.

Abstract:In this paper, we report on a study of the spectral features associated with dipole resonances in medium-mass nuclei (E≤12 MeV), as revealed in the framework of the spd-interacting boson model. The effect of pairing correlations on the theory follows from solutions obtained through an application of the Bethe ansatz equation. In general, calculated spectra around the critical point of the vibrational to γ-soft transitions appear to approach those of a Gaussian orthogonal ensemble, while near the rotational and vibrational limits of the theory the spectra show more regular behavior. Specifically, the results reveal that the statistical features of the spectra are sensitive to the vector boson pairing strength cp in the transition region; that is, when cp is zero, or when the system approaches one of its dynamical symmetry limits, the spectra display regular features, while for stronger cp values, or when near to the critical phase transition region, the spectral features show more chaotic behavior. Overall, our results indicate that the statistical features are governed by the interplay between dipole resonant energies, pairing correlations, and interactions between and among the single and vector boson modes of the theory. As part of this work we also found out that chaoticity occurred when results were fit to a Berry-Robnik distribution. Throughout our analyses, we used experimentally known information about both positive- and negative-parity states. Our findings suggest that dipole resonances appear to be best-described by Poisson statistics for A≈32–138 nuclei.

Abstract:Photophysical properties of recently synthesized single benzene chromophores have been studied with the purpose of understanding the origin of the unusually large Stokes shift and the absence of luminescence from one of the isomeric forms. The latter is explained by the rapid internal conversion of the photoexcited state through easily accessible conical intersections, which occur below the vertical excitation level. The former originates due to the effect of substituent groups decorating the benzene ring, rather than variations of the ring aromaticity. The results of the theoretical analysis can be used for the design of prospective chromophores for technological applications. The photophysical properties of a series of recently synthesized single benzene fluorophores were investigated using ensemble density functional theory calculations. The energetic stability of the ground and excited state species were counterposed against the aromaticity index derived from local vibrational modes. It was found that the large Stokes shift of the fluorophores (up to ca. 5800 cm−1 ) originates from the effect of electron donating and electron withdrawing substituents rather than π ‐delocalization and related (anti‐)aromaticity. On the basis of nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations, the absence of fluorescence from one of the regioisomers was explained by the occurrence of easily accessible S1 /S0 conical intersections below the vertical excitation energy level. It is demonstrated in the manuscript that the analysis of local mode force constants and the related aromaticity index represent a useful tool for the characterization of π ‐delocalization effects in π ‐conjugated compounds.

Abstract:The multi-state vibronic interactions in the benzene radical cation are investigated theoretically, based on an ab initio quantum dynamical approach. The three lowest doubly degenerate and two lowest non-degenerate electronic states are included, amounting to eight electronic component states and 28 vibrational degrees of freedom. The multi-mode dynamical Jahn-Teller as well as pseudo Jahn-Teller effects are included on an equal footing. This becomes possible by employing the Multiconfigurational Time-Dependent Hartree Method and its multi-layer extension for the wavepacket propagation underlying the dynamical treatment. The results indicate a step wise population transfer from higher to lower-energy electronic states. The transfer between the highest ( E ∼ and D ∼ states) is extremely fast which is made plausible by their energetic proximity. On the other hand the transfer is not complete and does not comprise the X ∼ ground state. Rather, a substantial part of the population gets trapped in the lowest excited ( B ∼ ) state. The phenomenon is briefly discussed and calls for future work on this intricate dynamical system.

Infrared action spectroscopy of doubly charged PAHs and their contribution to the aromatic infrared bands

Abstract:The so-called aromatic infrared bands are attributed to emission of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The observed variations toward different regions in space are believed to be caused by contributions of different classes of PAH molecules, i.e. with respect to their size, structure, and charge state. Laboratory spectra of members of these classes are needed to compare them to observations and to benchmark quantum-chemically computed spectra of these species. In this paper we present the experimental infrared spectra of three different PAH dications, naphthalene$^{2+}$, anthracene$^{2+}$, and phenanthrene$^{2+}$, in the vibrational fingerprint region 500-1700~cm$^{-1}$. The dications were produced by electron impact ionization of the vapors with 70 eV electrons, and they remained stable against dissociation and Coulomb explosion. The vibrational spectra were obtained by IR predissociation of the PAH$^{2+}$ complexed with neon in a 22-pole cryogenic ion trap setup coupled to a free-electron infrared laser at the Free-Electron Lasers for Infrared eXperiments (FELIX) Laboratory. We performed anharmonic density-functional theory calculations for both singly and doubly charged states of the three molecules. The experimental band positions showed excellent agreement with the calculated band positions of the singlet electronic ground state for all three doubly charged species, indicating its higher stability over the triplet state. The presence of several strong combination bands and additional weaker features in the recorded spectra, especially in the 10-15~$\mu$m region of the mid-IR spectrum, required anharmonic calculations to understand their effects on the total integrated intensity for the different charge states. These measurements, in tandem with theoretical calculations, will help in the identification of this specific class of doubly-charged PAHs as carriers of AIBs.

Electron delocalization in aromaticity as a superposition phenomenon

Abstract:This letter investigates the applications and extensions of the resource theory of quantum superposition within the realm of quantum chemistry. Specifically, we explore aromaticity, a fundamental concept originally developed to elucidate the structural symmetry, energetic stability, and chemical reactivity of benzene and its derivatives. While aromaticity and its counterpart, antiaromaticity, are associated with the delocalization of electrons between nonorthogonal atomic orbitals, they lack a universally accepted and comprehensive definition. We demonstrate that the genuine quantum superposition exhibited by biorthogonal atomic orbitals effectively captures the aromaticity order of representative monocyclic molecules. These findings reveal that the quantum resource theories hold significant implications, offering fresh insights into our comprehension of chemical bonding phenomena.

Magnetic Instability and Pair Binding in Aromatic Hydrocarbon Superconductors

Abstract:Understanding magnetism and electron correlation in many unconventional superconductors is essential to explore mechanism of superconductivity. In this work, we perform a systematic numerical study of the magnetic and pair binding properties in recently discovered polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) superconductors including alkali-metal-doped picene, coronene, phenanthrene and dibenzopentacene. The π-electrons on the carbon atoms of a single molecule are modelled by the one-orbital Hubbard model and the energy difference between carbon atoms with and without hydrogen bonds is taking into account. We demonstrate that the spin polarized ground state is realized for charged molecules in the physical parameter regions, which provides a reasonable explanation of local spins observed in PAHs. In alkali-metal-doped dibenzopentacene, our results show that electron correlation may produce an effective attraction between electrons for the charged molecule with one or three added electrons.

Abstract:A simple calculation has been made of the quadrupole coupling constant asymmetry parameter of the deuteron in aromatic hydrocarbons. The source of the asymmetry is the inequivalence between the carbon 2pσ and 2pπ orbitals, that is, their different nuclear screening constants. The calculation shows that the experimental magnitude of η is consistent with σ-π inequivalence found in recent valence theory calculations. Moreover, the sign of η implies that the pπ functions project further from the carbon nucleus than the pσ functions.

Abstract:Carborazine (B2C2N2H6) and borazine (B3N3H6) are isoelectronic analogues of benzene (C6H6). The aromatic character of borazine remains a controversial issue, and the related properties of carborazine are even rarely reported. In this work, we systematically investigated the geometric structure, charge distribution, frontier molecular orbital characteristics, magnetic shielding effect, and induced ring current of carborazine and borazine, and compared the studied characteristics with those of benzene to determine the aromatic character of two analogues. The combination of multiple properties shown that although they are isoelectronic, carborazine, like benzene, is strongly aromatic, while borazine only exhibits rather weak aromaticity. The C atom acting as a connecting bridge between B and N atoms reduces the electronegativity difference on the molecular backbone and enhances the electron delocalization over the conjugated path, which is the essence of the distinct disparity of aromaticity between carborazine and borazine.

Abstract:Aromaticity is a well-known phenomenon in both physics and chemistry, and is responsible for many unique chemical and physical properties of aromatic molecules. The primary feature contributing to the stability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons is the delocalised $\pi$-electron clouds in the $2p_z$ orbitals of each of the $N$ carbon atoms. While it is known that electrons delocalize among the hybridized $sp^2$ orbitals, this paper proposes quantum walk as the mechanism by which the delocalization occurs, and also obtains how the functional chemical structures of these molecules arise naturally out of such a construction. We present results of computations performed for some benzoid polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in this regard, and show that the quantum walk-based approach does correctly predict the reactive sites and stability order of the molecules considered.

Quantitative study of interactions between oxygen lone pair and aromatic rings: substituent effect and the importance of closeness of contact

Abstract:Current models describe aromatic rings as polar groups based on the fact that benzene and hexafluorobenzene are known to have large and permanent quadrupole moments. This report describes a quantitative study of the interactions between oxygen lone pair and aromatic rings. We found that even electron-rich aromatic rings and oxygen lone pairs exhibit attractive interactions. Free energies of interactions are determined using the triptycene scaffold and the equilibrium constants were determined by low-temperature 1H NMR spectroscopy. An X-ray structure analysis for one of the model compounds confirms the close proximity between the oxygen and the center of the aromatic ring. Theoretical calculations at the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level corroborate the experimental results. The origin of attractive interactions was explored by using aromatic rings with a wide range of substituents. The interactions between an oxygen lone pair and an aromatic ring are attractive at van der Waals' distance even with electron-donating substituents. Electron-withdrawing groups increase the strength of the attractive interactions. The results from this study can be only partly rationalized by using the current models of aromatic system. Electrostatic-based models are consistent with the fact that stronger electron-withdrawing groups lead to stronger attractions, but fail to predict or rationalize the fact that weak attractions even exist between electron-rich arenes and oxygen lone pairs. The conclusion from this study is that aromatic rings cannot be treated as a simple quadrupolar functional group at van der Waals' distance. Dispersion forces and local dipole should also be considered.
Vibronic Spectra of π-Conjugated Systems with a Multitude of Coupled States: A Protocol Based on Linear Vibronic Coupling Models and Quantum Dynamics Tested on Hexahelicene.

Abstract:Hexahelicene is a prototype of an extended π-conjugated system with axial chirality. Its absorption (ABS) and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra show vibronic features and strong nonadiabatic effects, challenging currently available computational methods. Here, we compute the nonadiabatic ABS and ECD vibronic spectra of hexahelicene in the full energy range, covering ∼2 eV and 14-18 coupled electronic states, including all of the relevant nuclear coordinates. To this end, we exploit a recently proposed protocol that uses time-dependent density functional theory to parameterize linear vibronic coupling models comprising several electronic states. Spectra are computed through quantum dynamical propagations with multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree methods. Our results nicely reproduce the experimental spectra providing an assignment of the main observed bands. On the contrary, we document that the application of the Herzberg-Teller intensity-borrowing theory leads to large artifacts. The proposed approach is of general applicability for rigid systems and represents a viable tool for studying the photophysical properties of π-conjugated systems characterized by a dense manifold of interacting electronic states.

Abstract:Strong electron correlation effects in the photophysics of quasi-one-dimensional $\pi$-conjugated organic systems such as polyenes, polyacetylenes, polydiacetylenes, etc., have been extensively studied. Far less is known on correlation effects in two-dimensional $\pi$-conjugated systems. Here we present theoretical and experimental evidence for moderate repulsive electron-electron interactions in a number of finite polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules with $D_{6h}$ symmetry. We show that the excited state orderings in these molecules are reversed relative to that expected within one-electron and mean-field theories. Our results reflect similarities as well as differences in the role and magnitude of electron correlation effects in these two-dimensional molecules compared to those in polyenes.

Coupling shape and pairing vibrations in a collective Hamiltonian based on nuclear energy density functionals (II): low-energy excitation spectra of triaxial nuclei

Abstract:The triaxial quadrupole collective Hamiltonian, based on relativistic energy density functionals, is extended to include a pairing collective coordinate. In addition to triaxial shape vibrations and rotations, the model describes pairing vibrations and the coupling between triaxial shape and pairing degrees of freedom. The parameters of the collective Hamiltonian are determined by a covariant energy density functional, with constraints on the intrinsic triaxial shape and pairing deformations. The effect of coupling between triaxial shape and pairing degrees of freedom is analyzed in a study of low-lying spectra and transition rates of $^{128}$Xe. When compared to results obtained with the standard triaxial quadrupole collective Hamiltonian, the inclusion of dynamical pairing compresses the low-lying spectra and improves interband transitions, in better agreement with data. The effect of zero-point energy (ZPE) correction on low-lying excited spectra is also discussed.

Abstract:We present a consistent theoretical description of few-particle effects in the optical spectra of semiconductor quantum dots, based on a direct-diagonalization approach. We show that, because of the strong Coulomb interaction among electrons and holes, each configuration of the confined few-particle system leads to its characteristic signature in the optical spectra. We discuss quantitative predictions and comparison with experiments for both absorption and luminescence.

A unified superatomic-molecule theory for local aromaticity in π-conjugated systems

Abstract:ABSTRACT Aromaticity is one of the most important concepts in chemistry. However, there is still no unified chemical insight for various systems with conjugated sp2 carbon. Herein, we proposed a superatomic-molecule theory to build a generalized electron rule for polycyclic conjugated hydrocarbons, fullerenes and 2D periodic materials. Taking benzenoid units as 2D superatoms, polycyclic conjugated hydrocarbons and C60 can be seen as superatomic molecules consisting of bonded superatoms, resulting in local aromaticity. In superatomic molecules, π electrons are not totally delocalized, but localized in a single superatom forming superatomic lone pairs or shared by two atoms forming a superatomic bond, mimicking rules in classical valence bond theory. Moreover, two 2D superatomic crystals (C18H6 and C54H18) are predicted to have fairly large band gaps (∼1.8 eV), although the π electrons are conjugated and delocalized. The proposed superatomic-molecule theory provides generalized chemical insights into the nature of local aromaticity, which can be qualitatively evaluated by the chemical intuition given by superatomic Lewis structures.
