Abstract:The year 2015 marks the 750th birth anniversary of the Italian poet Dante Alighieri (1265-1321). It is less known that Dante had a sound level of medical knowledge, probably derived by his academic studies. In his works, medieval notions of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology (e.g. the connection between brain and spinal cord, function of optic nerve and peripheral nerves, knowledge of vegetative nervous system) and descriptions of neurological disorders (e.g. epileptic seizures, effects on nervous system by metal intoxication, and narcolepsy) may be found, specially in the Inferno, the first part of his masterpiece, the Divine Comedy. These accurate descriptions have led some authors to believe that the poet himself may have suffered from a neurological disease (epilepsy or hypersomnia). Damned souls of the Inferno seem to be also afflicted by psychiatric disorders, such as melancholia and depression. The analysis of Dante's works confirms that poetry - as well as literature in general - may be an important source of information for historians of neurology.

Abstract:Dante Alighieri (1265–1321) was a poet whose work was influenced both by his political experiences and by his study of philosophy. Born in Florence, he was educated in grammar and rhetoric and reports in his Convivio that he studied philosophy at the “schools of the religious,” probably the studia at Florence’s Franciscan and Dominican houses. Until his exile, he was an active participant in civic life, as a guild member, communal councilor, and prior. He was exiled in early 1302 after his faction, the Whites, was replaced by the Blacks (with the not-so-covert support of Boniface VIII). He never returned to Florence, dying in Ravenna in 1321.Except for the early collection of lyric poems, the Vita nuova, most of his works were composed during his exile. Convivio is an unfinished encyclopedic work on human knowledge. Monarchia argues for a single universal ruler, who should be the Roman emperor and not the pope. The Divine Comedy brings together many of these philosophical and political themes, transformed into a masterpiece of imaginative literature.

Abstract:Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy presents a large-scale picture of the afterworld that draws on prior tradition of depicting life after death. At the same time, the afterworld of the Divine Comedy is unique, being marked by numerous distinctions with the many similar descriptions in medieval literature: 1. The general nature of the depiction; the summa genre with its striving for universal coverage, classification, scholarship (references to authorities, use of contemporary knowledge), and moral and didactic impact. 2. The close connection of the otherworld with the temporal world – precise description of its location and structure, its connection with the earthly space. The otherworld is inhabited by similar characters, who emphasise their connection with the earthly space (they ask about their friends and relatives and their native city, invite Dante to tell his own story, and beg for his prayers). 3. Personal approach: rather than being illustrations of virtue or sin, the work’s characters are concrete people with their own fates both in the temporal world and in the afterlife. This leads to a powerful dramatic effect that sweeps the reader away and involves him in situations that he applies to his own life. Dante himself plays a double role in the Divine Comedy as both author and character. 4. Combination of “literary” and mystic experience.

Abstract:The author discusses a connection between the modern analysand’s experience of depth therapy and the Christian pilgrim’s experience of confession, penitence and transformation as described by Dante in his Divine Comedy. She looks at structure and order in the context of psychotherapy. Taking Adriana Mazzarella’s ‘In Search of Beatrice’ as a guide, she examines a Jungian interpretation of the poem as an analogy of therapeutic initiation. She explores the idea of cultural complexes via the study of the medieval world view as one distinct from our own. She demonstrates the way in which study of the Comedy unexpectedly helped her survive an experience of long-term psychotherapeutic work.

Abstract:Dante Alighieri died in 1321; therefore, 2021 is the 700th anniversary of his death. His best known work is the Divine Comedy, which explores Dante’s journey through the three realms of the underworld. Each realm is associated with three different sensations: Inferno , bodily (pain); Purgatorio, acoustic (music); and Paradiso , visual (light). The progression of the painful experiences and the resolution through music and light mirror the modern understanding of pain and its management. Music has both direct and indirect benefits and can help with coping. Sunlight promotes well-being and self-awareness.

Abstract:The power of Dante's Divine Comedy is unmistakable, but surprising in view of its theological structure and assumptions that are no longer current among most modern readers. This paper suggests that its power derives from the deep psychological truthfulness with which Dante deals with the painful personal crisis that underlies the poem and is his starting point. It attempts to clarify what may have constituted that crisis, and why the structure of the Comedy, and in particular its use of two guides, Virgil and Beatrice, who might be thought a somewhat incompatible pairing, point significantly to the nature of the solution Dante arrived at. In particular it suggests that the puzzling fictions to do with Statius in the Purgatorio are a clue to Dante's own difficulties in bridging the classical and Christian traditions, and that his highly original solution to these difficulties, by no means conforming to conventional Christian orthodoxy in the 13th/14th century, was needed with special urgency in a time of pervasive civil conflict.

Abstract:The article examines the famous literary and artistic work of the Renaissance poet Dante Alighieri "Divine Comedy". In the Comedy a special place is occupied by the musical content, which enriches the literary images of the afterlife. Many works of Western researchers pay attention to the "philosophy of music" of Dante's work. The opinions of various scholars who single out the following musical references are considered: songs and musical instruments, liturgical sung texts and psalms, the presence of monophonic and polyphonic sounds, the reflection of the Boethian principles: musica mundana, humana, instrumentalis and assumptions about the poet's own vision of the development of music. Authors saw the relation with words used to designate the music itself. They have focused on moments of structural and literary relations in these sacred texts respect to each other, analysed the "singing" relationship between heroes of Comedy. The considered a set of key cases resonates with music and sound: infernal dissonance, cacophony emphasizes the immorality Inferno; the middle part Purgatorio, is the central part of Comedy is the musical bridge between the “anti-music” of Inferno and the divine music of Paradiso. The music running these canticas throughout psalms and hymns voiced by choirs of souls. Recent scholarship on the literary aspects and musicology enables us as one level up of the meaning of Comedy. This philosophical and metaphysical aspects of Dante`s thought maybe give us information about music life in 14th century. Interesting material is supplemented by quotations from the Ukrainian translation of Maxim Strikha, which preserves the poetics of speech and sound means by which Dante tried to portray his visions.
Dante, psychoanalysis, and the (erotic) meaning of meaning

Abstract:The author observes a resemblance between (1) the "polysemous" technique of imputing meaning to reality practiced in medieval biblical studies and in Dante's writing and (2) the technique of interpretation in contemporary psychoanalysis. She explores the roots of this resemblance in the development of intellectual history and provides examples of polysemous meanings in Dante's Divine Comedy, which is in part an autobiographical journey of self-reflection and self-realization (like psychoanalysis). She then suggests some implications of this resemblance for contemporary psychiatry.

Abstract:The anatomic and medical knowledge of people throughout history is unexpectedly evident in some of the poems and texts written by intellectuals of the time. This article attempts to understand the conception of laryngology in the Middle Ages by analyzing the Divine Comedy, written by the Italian poet Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) at the beginning of the 14th century. In the text, Dante mentions the throat several times. He recognizes that the larynx has the dual functions of allowing respiration (dead souls recognize that the poet is alive through movement of his throat when breathing) and speech (souls with their throat cut cannot speak). However, Dante does not seem to know of the existence of vocal cords, thinking that it is the tongue that allows for word formation. In general, Dante's poem indicates that the anatomy and function of the throat were known during the medieval period, although this knowledge was not precise.
Dante's Divine Comedy revisited: what can modern psychoanalysts learn from a medieval "psychoanalysis"?

Abstract:I realize after having gone over this material that I have done a sort of deconstruction of Dante's Divine Comedy which putatively attempts to raise the human vision to transcendent heights and to focus love on the love of God, but which along the way indulges in the very human aspects of pity, compassion, music, poetry, and the other arts, as well as reason and puzzlement. In this sense the poem is also an exposition of the value of the higher human faculties, which contrasts at times rather vividly with the apparently harsh autocratic fates that are assigned to some characters--who do not seem quite deserving of what is inflicted upon them. Here we have a collision between absolute faith in the judgment of God and human reason and compassion which sometimes seems to be unable to justify these judgments. In spite of the fact that Dante is trying to adhere to orthodox theology throughout, it is clear that his poetic soul has great difficulty in avoiding the depiction of characters for whom he has a secret sympathy. The central point of this study of The Divine Comedy is to emphasize how Dante, almost in spite of himself, expressed empathy and understanding for a variety of unfortunates either in the Inferno or in the Purgatorio. Virgil even scolds him for his compassion, arguing that God's justice is always correct and if God is angry at someone and punishes him or her, Dante should also be angry and not compassionate. Dante tries, but he cannot quite manage to do it. Translated into modern terminology, we can learn from this report of a medieval "psychoanalysis" an important lesson in our clinical work. Rigid adherence to rules such as those Freud himself proclaimed (although he never followed them), for instance in his famous demand that one be always opaque to the patient, and/or rigid adherence to one or another psychoanalytic theory, must be understood as a form of countertransference, a character flaw in the analyst. Each case demands its own approach and its own form or forms or channels of understanding, just as Dante offers us in The Divine Comedy. It is because he offers such a perspective almost in spite of himself that his poem transcends the medieval mind and becomes relevant to all ages and cultures. As a rule of thumb, when one finds one's instinctual convictions about how to proceed in conflict with one's theories and set of rules, something is wrong. It is with the greatest trepidation that a well-analysed psychoanalyst should force him- or herself to ignore an instinctual or intuitive feeling of how to respond to a patient because it conflicts with some theoretical principles or official rules of procedure. Such a conflict is a call for further self-analysis, consultation with colleagues, and creative solutions.

Abstract:The first part of the Divine Comedy, the Inferno, should be interpreted through the prism of the Aristotelian conception of virtue. Against all expectations, Dante did not base his work on virtue as defined by Catholic morality, which makes his work seem less guided by established principles, even if the ontological essence of the text reflects the Thomistic structure. This is not without consequence. The characters of the Inferno are not approached from the angle of absolute morality, but rather through the accounts of their concrete lives, which Dante narrates and analyses in depth. In this way, he can position himself uniquely in relation to these figures, expressing his own personal feelings. The poet has a deep respect for those who had a direct or indirect influence on his life (such as Virgil, Brunetto Latini and the fictional character of Ulysses), even if they are among the damned. He sees them not in absolute terms, but relatively, considering their humanity, which, like all humanity, is imperfect and fallible. From this perspective, the term “transhumar”, one of the main vectors of the spiritual habitus in the Comedy, can be seen as an equivalent of the Greek term “eudaimonia”, which designates the supreme good or its quest. This is precisely what the poet aspires to, and what his most beloved characters cling to, whom he saves from eternal damnation by means of Aristotle’s moral teaching. That’s why the play is called “Comedy”. It is, after all, a story with a happy ending. And how could it be otherwise, when Dante, and those he holds in high esteem in the Inferno, aspire to maximum personal fulfilment in the light of “the love that moves the Sun and the other stars”? In the end, the “lectura aristotelica” proves to be a great help in grasping the dialectic of the poem.

Abstract:Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy chronicles his journey through the afterlife in three cantiche-from hell (Inferno), to purgatory (Purgatorio), and finally to heaven (Paradiso)-each comprising 33 cantos. Writing in idiomatic Tuscan rather than the more common, but less widely understood, Latin, Dante is widely credited with establishing Italian as a literary language and opening up contemporary literature to a wider, less scholarly audience. He wrote his epic during his political exile from Florence, and completed it in 1320, just a year before his death. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was the first American to translate the Divine Comedy into English, publishing this version in 1867.

Abstract:Dante’s Divine Comedy in Early Renaissance England compares the intellectual, emotional, and religious world of Dante in 13th-century Florence with that of a group of English intellectuals gathered around Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, uncle of the King, Henry VI. Here, Jonathan Hughes establishes that there was a Renaissance in 15th-century England, encouraged by the discovery and translations of works of Greek philosophers and developments in science and medicine; and that vernacular writers in Gloucester’s circle, such as John Lydgate and Robert Hoccleve, were of fundamental importance in exploring the meaning of the self and man’s relationship with the natural world and the classical past. However, the appearance in 15th-century England of Dante’s ‘Commedia’, the most popular work of the Middle Ages, served to remind writers and readers of the cost of intellectual enquiry: the loss of faith in a harmonious and beautiful world; the redemptive power of the love of a woman; and the tangible presence of an afterlife. Engagingly written and meticulously researched, this innovative study shines a new perspective on Dante scholarship as well as offering a unique anaylsis of intellectual thought and culture in 15th-century England.

Abstract:A time o f great musical development, the fourteenth century is the per fect back drop for the auditory all usions of Dante Alighieri's Divi ne Comedy . This article argues that Dante utilizes musical imagery as an essential component of his allegory. Influenced by both Christian thinkers and philosophers, Dante likely viewed scholastic music as an adjunct of religion. In the Divine Comedy, therefore, Dante presents auditory allusions as an inextricable factor of the protagonist's epic pilgrimage through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. Through a progression of anti-music in Inferno to human context in Purgatory to the music of the spheres in Paradise, this essay explores how the musical langauge of Dante's Divine Comedy conveys humanity's innate connection with God.

Abstract:Placing the words Comedy and Africa in the same sentence, is like laying claim to two expansive and complex entities which do not immediately bear relation to another and yet, there is ample opportunity for engagement. The article begins by showing how a young South African’s reading of the Divine Comedy through the lens of her own preoccupation with the body and its theo-performative demeanour can bring fresh perspectives to the fore. A primary instance of the intersection between the body, God and theological performance is the Ethiopian artist Aïda Muluneh’s interpretation of Inferno, canto xx. Muluneh’s performative expression transforms the scope and meaning of tears in the Comedy by bringing to bear her own particularity. Here, tears become central in unveiling the truth that the Comedy speaks. The article explores the significant role that gestures have in giving form to the Divine Comedy. As the logic of relationality, love forms the spine of this article while drawing together the themes of creation and incarnation. The article ends by suggesting that if one has a proper understanding of the relationship between humans and the created order, one might find a theology from below latent in the Comedy.

Abstract:The paper considers the role of antique philosophy in medieval theology. Dante’s «Divine Comedy» was chosen as an object for a comparative study of philosophy and theology. A «сomplicated» relationship between theology and philosophy is due to the question of the creation of the world. According to Aristotle and his medieval successors Averroes and Siger of Brabant, the world was not created by God but, he is needed as the source of its movement. Despite Aristotle’s overwhelming authority as a Philosopher and a Teacher, Dante placed antique thinkers led by Aristotle, in Limbo, Hell canopy. So they were unable to pass through Hell and Purgatory and face God one day. Ancient thinkers were to blame for living before Christ and therefore not knowing him. It is underlined, that all real-life hostilities become meaningless in Heaven, where everyone is equal before God. That’s why Thomas Aquinas and Siger de Brabantt are side by side in Heaven. The article states that the theme of wisdom is a keynote of Dante’s «Divine Comedy». It is noted, that Dante’s journey through the circles of Hell, ascension into Purgatory and «getting» to Heaven is because of Beatrice – allegory of philosophy. It was philosophy (in the form of beautiful Beatrice) «coming» to help when Dante found himself in an «impassable forest» of his soul. Philosophy in the form of Beatrice presents wisdom. Theology, in turn, is intended to purify the minds, which is possible just in Purgatory. Heaven is the embodiment of justice and perception of truth, the place of some conciliation between theology and philosophy.

Abstract:Few authors in the Western literature have acquired such a monumental reputation as Thomas Mann and Fyodor Dostoyevsky; although with different backgrounds and aesthetic peculiarities, their writings converge thematically in their frequent relationship with disease. From Dostoyevsky's struggle with epilepsy to Mann's descriptions of tuberculosis and cholera, many are the examples found in their body of work describing medical afflictions. One noteworthy similarity in their works is the presence of hallucinations with Mephistopheles-like devilish entities, possibly caused by neurological diseases: in Mann's case, concerning the main character of Doctor Faustus, caused by neurosyphilis, while for Dostoyevsky, concerning one of the titular Brothers Karamazov, by delirium tremens. In both cases, the authors leave room for ambiguity, with the characters themselves casting doubts on whether their experiences were indeed caused by their disease or by an actual supernatural being. In this, we may find an interesting intersection between neurology and the literature.
