Abstract:In this autoethnographic essay, the author draws on his experiences as a Chinese immigrant in Canada to reflect on how they shaped his style of comedy and how they revealed the limitations of self-deprecating humor, particularly when it is used as a response to jokes that imply discriminatory worldviews. While a self-deprecating response can steal the laugh from the person telling a derogatory joke, its outcomes are not always certain. Studies of audience responses to comedy have indicated that the presence or absence of laughter can be seen as an affirmation or rejection of the ideas embedded in the jokes, suggesting how, when self-deprecation succeeds in provoking laughter, it runs the risk of perpetuating the harmful ideas it aims to counteract. The author examines his own confrontations with racist humor alongside accounts of similar situations involving Asian comedians living in the West, such as Ryan Higa and Joe Wong, to illustrate the dilemma of self-deprecating humor as well as the potential personal and professional consequences for those who employ it.

Abstract:Grice’s Cooperative Principle (CP) was originally presented at Harvard University in 1967 as part of the William James lectures. Once established, Cooperative Principle had a widespread impact on a range of scholar activity, from work interested in the narrowest issues of language meaning to work interested in the broadest questions of social communication. As is known, verbal humor is a genre of linguistics interaction that often emerges in daily conversation. This paper is aimed at probing into the linguistic basis involved in the process of language humor from the perspective of Grice’s CP. It is also intended to reveal the relation between creation of humor and violation of cooperative principle, and then give critical comments on Grice’s cooperative principle, which mainly focuses on limitations Grice’s cooperative principle. Finally, the essay has a natural conclusion for contribution of study pragmatics of conversational principle, and its application in other fields.

Abstract:Many scholars have conducted extensive and in-depth research on verbal humor from the perspective of pragmatics. However, there are insufficient pragmatic researches on different forms of verbal humor. This paper tries to explore the characteristics of American humor, selecting American verbal humor as research theme, dialogues of the famous American sitcom The Big Bang Theory as research corpus, and the principle of cooperation as theoretical basis. A large number of examples are used in the thesis to explain in detail how the humorous effects of American verbal humor are produced by violating the principle of cooperation. Through analysis, this paper finds the following things. Firstly, in American verbal humor, the humorous effects are often produced by means of ambiguity and rhetoric in dialogue. Secondly, on the subject of humor, American humor tends to produce humorous effects on topics related to religion, sex as well as the relationship between men and women. With the advancement of cultural exchanges between China and the United States, more and more American comedy works have entered the Chinese market. This paper intends to help people improve their understandings of American humor and better feel the charm of American humor so as to achieve better effect in cross-cultural communication.

Abstract:Abstract This study explored how L1 Cantonese and L1 Korean speakers would comprehend and appreciate L2 English humor, and whether their L1 background, English proficiency, and the type of humor would play as moderators. For this study, 69 Cantonese and 76 Korean undergraduate students answered a questionnaire that contained 30 English humor items in various types, i.e., lexical, morphological, syntactic, phonological, and cultural. In addition, five intermediate and five advanced participants from each L1 group participated in semi-structured interviews to elicit their English learning and use experiences and beliefs in the role of humor in English learning. The results revealed that humor comprehension scores were significantly higher for Cantonese speakers and for participants with advanced English proficiency, and morphological humor was the easiest to comprehend. Open-ended responses and interview protocols also demonstrated that different contexts of English learning and use may affect the participants’ ability to enjoy and appreciate English humor.

Abstract:What does humour do to us and our relationship with the society? This article examines political humour in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and asks how hegemony is mediated through political humour in China. Critical discourse analysis (CDA) of two Spring Festival Gala sketches, 春晚小品 (‘chunwan xiaopin’), is applied not only for its ontological fit with the literature of hegemony but also because of its potential to unravel the hidden power relations. I argue for the social and psychological significance of xiaopin to the general public because they reveal the fragility of the intellectual hierarchy that places the rural population at the bottom, play with the heavy historical episode of the Great Leap Forward, and create the illusion of empowerment. Furthermore, it reveals that humour can be subversive on the textual level and simultaneously hegemonic on the discursive level.

Abstract:Notwithstanding the fact that ?? youmo ‘humour’ is a neologism and transliteration coined in the 1920s, the conception has been existing in Chinese civilisation for millennia. The earliest extant treatise on humour in Chinese literature is regarded to be an anthology ?? Xiao Lin ‘The Forest of Laughs’ cumulated circa 2ndc CE, yet the most illustrious pre-modern jestbook is a 1791 assemblage entitled ???? Xiao Lin Guang Ji ‘A Collection of Classic Chinese Jokes’. In the 2000s, stand-up comedy entered China’s entertainment market as a niche cultural import, though it was, and still is, mistranslated into ??? tuokouxiu ‘talk show’. Recently, stand-up comedy attains visibility in China by means of phenomenal online programmes. I postulate that Chinese stand-up comedy is featured by unique attributes, in that it is disparate from ‘A Collection of Classic Chinese Jokes’ and the traditional theatrical comedy called ?? xiangsheng ‘cross-talk’, and it is not parallel to its equivalent in the West either. To be more specific, being subject to stringent censorship, stand-up comedy in China is circumspect about content appertaining to (homo)sexual titillation and supernaturalism. Nonetheless, I posit that in terms of inducing humorous effects, contemporary stand-up comedy still evinces similitude to ‘A Collection of Classic Chinese Jokes’ from phonetic, semantic and pragmatic perspectives.
The Impact of Culture and Social Distance on Humor Appreciation, Sharing, and Production

Abstract:Building on the benign violation theory and self-construal theory, we conducted four studies to examine how culture and social distance would influence humor appreciation, sharing, and production. Study 1 found that Chinese participants appreciated and intended to share a joke involving distant others more than that involving close others. They also generated funnier titles for a joke involving distant others than close others. Studies 2a and 2b compared Chinese and Americans using various types of jokes, replicating the social distance effect among Chinese but finding little effect of social distance among Americans. In Study 3, interdependence-primed participants generated more humorous titles for a joke involving distant than close others, whereas independence-primed participants showed no effect of social distance. The research provides further support to the benign violation theory from a cultural perspective and has important implications for cross-cultural communications.

Contextual Dimensions in Interactional Humour: How Humour is Practiced in Selected American and Chinese Situation Comedies

Abstract:Situation comedies are a form of performing arts deliberately created to arouse laughter in the audience. As such, they serve as a rich corpus for the linguistic analysis of interpersonal and interactional humour. The effectiveness of interactional humour is strongly dependent on the context in which intended meanings are exchanged and understood. In this paper, I develop a framework of contextual dimensions (physical, temporal and experiential) which is used to describe how humour is communicated in social interactions. An analysis is conducted to study the mechanisms of humour embedded in interpersonal interactions in the American situation comedy "Friends" and the Chinese situation comedy "I Love My Family". The results of the analysis show that the frequency of humour is just under 50% in both sitcoms, bearing a remarkable consistency. Overall, "Friends" is found to be more palatable to an international audience compared to "I Love My Family". The greater utilization of the temporal contextual dimension and the lesser utilization of the experiential contextual dimension for "Friends" compared to "I Love My Family" means that the former depends more on linguistic and logical elements and less on social and cultural knowledge in order to achieve the humourous effects. Abstract:The objective of this study is to review the conservation and transmission of the Hui dialects, utilizing the "inheritance language theory" that has surfaced internationally, whilst further appreciating the distinctiveness and significance of minority languages. The survey is executed by means of both empirical and quantitative techniques followed by assessment of the findings through SPSS statistical software, to manifest genuine situation of the Hui language inheritance.The survey results indicate that Xi'an Hui heritage language speakers possess an intermediate level of dialect proficiency or above. Furthermore, their listening and speaking skills outperformed their reading and writing abilities. Their dialects are frequently used, and they demonstrate an upper intermediate level of learning attitudes and motivation. The motivation and attitude of inherited dialect speakers are affected by various backgrounds, including gender, place of residence, and partner's ethnicity. In light of these findings, the author suggests protective measures for minority inherited languages at different levels and from various perspectives

Abstract:: Humor is a panacea for life, which can help people face difficulties and facts of life pleasantly. With the development of pragmatics and the popularization of interdisciplinary research, there has been an increasing tendency in integrating verbal humor with pragmatics. From the perspective of Cooperation Principle, this paper studies and dissects the generation mechanism of verbal humor. Taking the American sitcom Young Sheldon as a case study, this paper analyzes the dialogues of Young Sheldon by means of the four maxims of the Cooperative Principle: quantity, quality, relation, and manner, and discusses the reason why characters violate the Cooperative Principle and the way how characters achieve verbal humor by violating the Cooperative Principle. This research can let English learners better understand the generation mechanism of verbal humor, so as to better appreciate verbal humor.

Abstract:Through interpreting the status of Hoche language and cultural practices from community voices, this ethnographic case study conducted in a minority language school centers on five Han and Hoche ethnic minority children’s positions toward multi-language learning. My research explores how these children negotiate the policies and multilingual curriculum that illuminates the multilayered tensions between local issues and global transformation. Findings indicate that policies situate Hoche as a romantic representation of the past, whereas the narratives I gathered from Hoche and Han children’s attitudes and ideologies about language show that younger generations are oriented toward future opportunities and influenced by globalization. This work contributes to scholarship on the education of minority children during a period of rapid industrialization by extending our understanding of ethnicity, diversity, and inclusivity issues via children’s perspectives. Shedding light onto the lives of Hoche and other ethnic minority children’s language practices, this paper is a call to urgently address power inequities in the ideologies and pedagogies enacted in service of Indigenous reclamation.
Chinese teachers' use of humour in coping with stress

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to examine the mentality of Chinese teachers regarding their use of humour in coping with stress. Specifically, the study investigated their frequency of use of humour in coping with stress as compared to other coping styles and their perceptions about the relationship of humour with other coping styles. Data were collected from a sample of 789 Chinese teachers holding teaching posts at local Hong Kong secondary schools. Based on responses made to the COPE questionnaire, there was evidence that Chinese teachers had a lower frequency of use of humour as compared to other coping styles. As suggested by the results of a factor analysis, there was a perception among Chinese teachers that the use of humour was related more closely to escaping and/or avoidance as coping strategies, but more differentiable from problem-focused/task-oriented and emotional/social coping. It is interesting to find that the results of our study echoed those of a previous crosscultural comparison between Chinese and Canadian university students, in which the Chinese university students reported less use of humour in coping with stress than did their Canadian counterparts. These results have provided some empirical support for the notion that "humor has been traditionally given little respect in Chinese culture mainly due to the Confucian emphasis on keeping proper manners in social interactions" (Yue, 2010, p. 403). As teachers in Chinese societies are regarded as persons who are full of wisdom and capable of problem-solving, it is expected that they should act as role models to their students. These social expectations on Chinese teachers could further mould their perceptions on the use of humour in coping with stress.

Abstract:This article focuses on a specific aspect of Yu Hua’s satiric criticism of Mao-era rhetoric through the use of double-voiced discourse in his full-length novel Cries in the Drizzle. I analyse how this double-voiced discourse is achieved through the contrast between the focalizers’ unreflective and matter-of-fact use of Maoist rhetoric and the public narrator’s clear awareness of the shabby realities behind this rhetoric. The varied understandings of Maoist rhetoric within a variety of narrative voices give rise to sarcasm, irony, and parody. Four episodes in Cries in the Drizzle will be analysed in detail. In each of these, Mao-era rhetoric is projected and embedded in the daily conversations and language of some characters who hail from villages in the countryside. These episodes invite readers to reflect upon just how much of the daily discourse of the Chinese people alludes to, or incorporates, the words of Mao and the Party, and also to appreciate the varied forms of double-voiced discourse brought about by differentiated perspectives of the public narrator versus the focalizers in Yu Hua’s story.

Abstract:Abstract In recent times, Linguistic Landscape (LL) research has been extended to cover several variables, domains, modes, and geo-political contexts. Arguably, humour remains understudied in LL research. This article, therefore, examines incongruities in LLs using a corpus of digital signs and incongruous inscriptions gathered across several mediums in urban Ghana. Drawing on the incongruity theory, we examined the levels of incongruities in the corpus. The study found that incongruities in public signs in urban Ghana manifest at the lexical, grammatical, semantic, and phonological levels. We conclude that the resolutions of these incongruities induce laughter and humour in the audience with the shared sociolinguistic knowledge, and humour intelligence. The findings have implications for the theory on humour and the research on LL.
