Abstract:New Negro magazines such as The Messenger, Opportunity, and The Crisis regularly featured photographs and short descriptions of Black women designed to highlight their role as both moral centers and aspirational figures. These images tended to imply that the ideal New Negro woman would challenge racist stereotypes of Black women not only through her behavior but also through her looks. For instance, a feature in the January 1924 issue of The Messenger called “Exalting Negro Womanhood” seeks to counter the overrepresentation of “[t]he buffoon, the clown, the criminal Negro” in white media with portraits of Black “achievement, culture, refinement, beauty, genius, and talent”. But of the twenty women featured in the centerfold of photographs, all are light skinned. Importantly, however, Black women poets of the era, including Gwendolyn B. Bennett, Gladys May Casely-Hayford, Anita Scott Coleman, Jessie Fauset, Angelina Weld Grimké, Helene Johnson, Anne Spencer, and Octavia B. Wynbush, provide a counter to this coding of light skin as desirable through poems that emphasize the beauty of dark-skinned bodies. This essay places their poetry alongside the visuals of the New Negro movement and the larger white supremacist culture of the 1920s. In poems such as Bennett’s “To a Dark Girl”, Grimké’s “The Black Hand”, Johnson’s “Poem”, and Spencer’s “Lady, Lady”, an emphasis on beautiful and powerful Blackness provides a steady counterpoint to the prevailing color standards surrounding Black female beauty and respectability.

Empowering Self-Care: Caring Things in Alice Dunbar-Nelson's 1890s "New Woman" Short Fiction

Abstract:Alice Dunbar-Nelson is mostly remembered as a poet, activist, and ex-wife of Paul Laurence Dunbar. Her volume The Goodness of St. Rocque and Other Stories (1899) has been largely overshadowed as a result. Yet, the collection contains a portfolio of heroines analogous and contemporaneous to the famed New Woman figure of the fin de siècle. In this article, I consider Dunbar-Nelson's heroines in light of their New Woman-esque agency and autonomy as they find remedies and power in objects and materials steeped in New Orleans's cultural heritage. Ceded neither social nor political self-governance nor domestic comfort, this article reads these transcendental, metaphysical objects as sources of self-care. With close analysis of "The Goodness of St. Rocque," "Tony's Wife," and "Little Miss Sophie," I argue that Dunbar-Nelson's protagonists exert influence over their lives, specifically in the negotiation of romantic relationships, through voodoo charms, Catholic candles, tarot cards, sewing machines, and knitting needles. Covering courtship, break-ups, and unhappy marriages, I demonstrate the ways in which these empowering spiritual objects respond to health concerns, including malnutrition and domestic violence, in turn, situating them as alternatives to patriarchal and historically racist medical institutions. Valorizing the cultural milieu of New Orleans and the customs of the Caribbean and European heritage, and thereby conveying Dunbar-Nelson's resistance to white and male supremacist ideologies in late-nineteenth-century Southern America, the article ultimately assesses the parallels with (predominantly white) New Woman fiction, through shared themes of fraught heterosexual dynamics and women's declining health.

This department column focuses on the teaching and use of children's literature and provides educators with information about a wide range of books across multiple genres that are representative of the diverse world in which we live. A strong emphasis is placed on the importance of having diverse library collections that take into account numerous factors, such as race, class, disability, and religion. This column also offers innovative approaches for bringing children and books together, as well as content analyses and rich descriptions of titles that share common features (e.g., endpapers, the blending of poetry and nonfiction).

Abstract:Focusing on the changing publishing trends in children’s Irish and British fiction in the mid-nineteenth century, this essay examines Frances Browne’s popular fairy-tale collection, Granny’s Wonderful Chair, and its Tales of Fairy Times (1856), as part of a wider turn towards fantasy and fairy tale in the period. For Browne and others, the appeal of the genre lies in its ability to both entertain children, as well as instruct them in moral and social principles. As this essay aims to demonstrate, however, Browne’s text forges a significant challenge to conventional gendered patterns of social behaviour for women and imagines alternative life pathways for its young female readership as part of its didactic function. By focusing on the girl protagonist of the collection’s frame story, and her journey of maturation and acculturation, this essay finally reads Browne’s text not only for its transgressive subtext on gender conventions, but also for its implied critique of the power hierarchies that uphold the patriarchal order at the heart of these gendered social principles.

Abstract:Dear Readers, Welcome to the fourth issue of Volume 66 of the Journal of Gerontological Social Work . It features seven research articles and two media reviews. The issue opens with Krohne and colleagues' qualitative study of older adults' experiences of befriending programs in Norway and the friendships that develop through the volunteer home visits. Next, Cho et al. share a mixed methods study examining older adults' motivations for long-term residency in a Village, which is a "membership-driven organization based on neighbors helping neighbors age in place." Results indicate that residents with altruistic goals tended to remain in the Village long term. Article three, by Sun et al., uses data from the Centers for Disease Control and the U.S. Census Bureau to examine the social determinants associated with deaths due to alcohol, drugs, and suicide, known as "deaths of despair," among older adults in Missouri. Results indicate an upward trend in such deaths since 2007–2009, with the steepest increase among African Americans beginning in 2013–2015. Next, Buckley and Burnette use a risk and resilience framework to examine the protective effects of psychological sense of community on self-rated health and quality of life for older adults in Puerto Rico two years after Hurricane María. Findings indicate that psychological sense of community, defined in part as "an individual's perception that they are part of a social structure that is supportive, present and dependable" can be a protective factor for older adults who experience natural disasters. Article five, by Zell and colleagues, reports findings from an online needs assessment of Michigan's sixteen Area Agencies on Aging related to services provided to caregivers of persons with dementia; the range of services provided are described as well as the anticipated growth trends related to caregiver services. Next, Sun and colleagues share details from a mixed method study of the experiences of older adult school volunteers who transitioned from in-person tutoring to letter writing and online tutoring during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results indicate that volunteers felt they made a positive impact on students' lives during a difficult time but were challenged to facilitate engagement in the new communication mediums. Article seven, by Lehning and colleagues, presents findings from a study that details the complex association between service coordination and low-income senior housing residents' preference to age in place, focusing on the economically vulnerable. The issue closes with two media reviews. First, DeFries reviews Torres and Donnelly's Critical Gerontology for Social Workers , a collection of writings from international experts that discuss gerontological social work across a range of settings using a critical gerontology approach. Second, Shah reviews the second edition of Steffan et al.'s Treating Later-Life Depression: A Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Approach and its accompanying clinical guide; resources and content focused on the practitioner are described.

Abstract:ABSTRACT DeSpain reviews The Transatlantic Materials of American Literature: Publishing US Writing in Britain, 1830–1860 by Katie McGettigan, published by University of Massachusetts Press. McGettigan’s book builds upon the foundational work of Meredith McGill’s American Literature and the Culture of Reprinting (2003) to argue that British publishers helped expand the scope and audience for American literature by creating editions of American authors’ works that lent them greater credibility. McGettigan’s study offers in-depth case studies of British editions of hallmark American authors, including Longfellow, Poe, Melville, and Lydia Huntley Sigourney. Drawing on a comprehensive body of research into publishers’ circulars, advertisements, and archives, McGettigan covers multiple media forms, including deluxe editions, the cheap series, the gift book, and the magazine. DeSpain argues McGettigan’s book is an important contribution that reimagines the scholarly narrative about transatlantic reprinting as one of collaboration rather than contest. McGettigan’s most important contribution is her extensive analysis of how the cheap series created a greater global context for literature, which will prove fruitful for new scholarship about the distribution and reception of the cheap series.

Abstract:European Journal of Cultural Studies, Ahead of Print. This article provides a critical overview of gender equality talk within the media, arts and cultural industries, focusing on a case study of Australian cultural policy discourse from the 1970s to 2020s. It aims to expand on existing understandings of postfeminism and popular feminism by exploring how these sensibilities have been taken up and expressed within arts and cultural policy discourse. How has the problem of the cultural gender gap previously been understood? And how has that changed in light of increased public attention to feminist concerns? While there are important differences across the decades there are also recurring notions of pragmatism, self-empowerment, resilience, vigilance and trickle-down logics – which cultivate a sense of movement without progress. By looking at policy discourses and gender equality talk through a longer lens, considering situations of feminist visibility and invisibility, acceptance and repudiation, and inequalities that are speakable and unspeakable, we see how inequalities in the creative and cultural industries come to be both enduring and endurable.

"But Oh! What Tales": Portraying the Middle East in U.S. Homophile Periodicals of the 1950s and 1960s

Abstract:This essay examines Middle East representations in U.S. homophile periodicals from 1953 to 1964. The essay uses more than 120 Middle East-related items that were published in ONE, Mattachine Review, and The Ladder to address the periodicals' engagement with the region (particularly ancient history and biblical themes) and discuss the types of sexual "knowledge" that the homophile periodicals created about the region. It then assesses the role of periodicals as a genre in the creation of a transnational homophile community, showing both their potential for democratizing participation in this community and their limits. The essay argues that the periodicals made visible the process of assembling a homosexual identity and the fragmentary nature of the parts it strove to unify. Though the views of key U.S. homophile organizations became hegemonic in the international gay rights movement, the periodicals show a more complex, ambivalent, and contested process.

Abstract:This article surveys the contribution of Edith Charlotte Onians (1866–1955) to Australian social reform, both in her work as the organiser of the Newsboys' Society, a philanthropic organisation for disadvantaged male youth in Melbourne, and in her advocacy of welfare support for needy children and youths, and impoverished urban families. Her efforts to stimulate thought about policy change in the problem areas of youth homelessness, youth employment, juvenile delinquency and urban planning are given particular consideration. The roles that she played in social action in the first half of the twentieth century are evaluated.

Abstract:This article investigates BBC radio’s Woman’s Hour in the post-war period. It explores Woman’s Hour’s focus and insistence on educating women listeners about their role as citizens, and the tensions this caused particularly between broadcasters and different groups of women. The article documents the programme’s development of public and outward looking items, such as the reporting and covering of current affairs, public debates and national politics, women’s party political conferences, and further introducing women MP’s to the microphone. This gave the programme a public and arguably political dimension. The article thus places Woman’s Hour within the broader historiography of the women’s movement in this period, and illuminates the changing role and expectation of women, particularly the middle-class housewife.

Abstract:The American cultural narrative of personal identity has been formative of the study of American literature. Since the mid-1970s, the prototypical American male protagonist with his quest for self as a rebel against societal pressure has been supplemented by the female hero. I want to introduce the old woman as a paradigm of American culture, as aging—in contrast to stereotypical notions—does not bring a loss of identity, but emphasizes difference instead of communality, and expresses individualism more prominently than in youth.As a method to trace the aspect of aging as a cultural category and to generate what it means—in Margaret Morganroth Gullette's term—to be “aged by culture,” I suggest an anocritical reading. By linking theories of gender and age, I propose a search for the specific female culture of aging in the tradition of Elaine Showalter's “gynocriticism” and have coined the term “anocriticism” for the recognition of the implicit meaning of aging. In this essay, I will demonstrate such a reading using Alison Moore's short story “Aperture.”

Abstract:Focusing on the output of Elizabeth Howe Bliss, a Progressive Era travelling social worker, this article explores the snapshots Bliss made in New York City, Oklahoma and France. Although circulated in her own time, Bliss’s images and their publication history have only recently been rediscovered. They deserve further analysis as they illuminate the practices of women using photography personally and professionally during the early decades of the twentieth century, and for their value to researchers of photographic history and beyond. This article argues for the importance of recirculating Bliss’s snapshots – as well as other forms of vernacular imagery – through the digital dissemination made possible by platforming these photographic materials online within virtual spaces, and considers the specifics of one such platform, the Smithsonian Learning Lab.

Abstract:Among the books Oregon missionaries Elkanah and Mary Walker kept in their mission home at Tshimakain was a Bible in which was written a quotation attributed to Martin Luther: “Men are never more unfit for the sacrament, than when they think themselves most fit—and never more fit and prepared for duty than when most humbld ‘ sic ’ and ashamed in a sense of their own unfitness.” Fitness founded in unfitness, ability based on inability, and autonomy grounded in dependence were qualities that the Walker' sponsor, the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM), encouraged in its emissaries. The country's first foreign missionary program was established in 1810 by a small group of New Divinity ministers. Dominating the rural pulpits in New England and New York during the Second Great Awakening, New Divinity preachers aimed to legitimate their conception of revival and conversion by appealing to the earlier revival theology of Jonathan Edwards. In the process, they insisted that predestination and free grace did not violate human free will and moral responsibility. Based on these convictions antebellum ABCFM missionaries, including the Oregon group, learned to assess their own spiritual condition and calling. However, the internal conflicts prompted by New Divinity understandings of the conversion experience alternatively produced debilitating and vitalizing effects that continued to trouble these women and men throughout their missionary careers. In effect, the vocation of the missionaries of the Whitman-Spalding mission proceeded from an uncommonly heroic effort to achieve a salvation that could not be guaranteed by their own theology. Moreover, contemporary clashing views regarding the nature and social role of women became intertwined with this disabling discourse. This, in turn, limited the Oregon women's conception of themselves and their capacities as missionaries.
