Abstract:N‐Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have become important tools in modern synthetic chemistry due to their versatility as organocatalysts and ligands in organometallic complexes. Since their first isolation and characterization, NHCs have demonstrated significant utility in various catalytic processes, offering advantages such as strong σ‐electron donation and the ability to stabilize reactive intermediates. However, beyond their well‐documented roles in catalysis, the potential of NHCs as stoichiometric reagents and synthetic building blocks remains an underexplored yet promising area. This Mini‐review aims to shed light on these lesser‐known applications of NHCs and their N‐heterocyclic precursors or derivatives in organic synthesis. Furthermore, we discuss how the unique electronic and steric properties of NHCs can be harnessed to develop new synthetic methodologies or construct interesting organic frameworks. By highlighting these emerging uses, we hope to encourage further research into the non‐catalytic applications of NHCs, broadening their scope and impact in synthetic chemistry.

Abstract:In recent years N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) have evoked considerable interest, and this can be attributed in large measure to the isolation of a stable imidazol-2-ylidene by Arduengo et al. in 1991. Although the use of NHC as ligands in organometallic reactions has been studied extensively, the study of N-heterocyclic carbenes used as the reaction reagents and catalysts still need to be conducted deeply. The purpose of this passage is to cast some light on the chemistry of NHC as organocatalysts and to inspire organic chemists to pay more attention to this hot field.

Abstract:Carbenes in general and isolable NHCs (N-heterocyclic carbenes) in particular have been useful ligands in recent years. The emergence of CAACs [cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbenes], BICAACs [bicyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbenes], and many other carbenes has marked revolutionary milestones in this field. These carbenes possess an intriguing blend of highly electrophilic and nucleophilic characteristics, owing to their remarkably narrow HOMO-LUMO energy gap. The isolation and characterization of these carbenes hold significance not only due to their fascinating electronic properties but have demonstrated their prowess across various domains, including isolation of transition metal complexes, medicinal applications, catalysis, and radical stabilization. While the chemistry of 5-membered NHCs and CAACs have been extensively explored, the investigation of BICAAC has just begun. This review covers the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of BICAACs, and outlines diverse applications of BICAACs in organometallic, metal-free catalysis, and main-group chemistry.

Abstract:Heterogeneous N-heterocyclic carbene materials have attracted increasing interest in the field of material science and catalysis due to their unique properties and potential applications. However, current heterogeneous systems primarily focus on a single class of carbene. In this work, we simultaneously introduce two classes of typical five-membered carbenes, N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and cyclic (alkyl)(amino) carbene (CAAC), into the graphene lattice, forming a series of novel two-dimensional heterogeneous N-heterocyclic carbene nanomaterials (2D-NCMs) composed of multiple carbenes. First-principles calculations demonstrate the thermodynamic stability of the designed 2D-NCMs, as well as their diverse electronic properties ranging from metallic to semiconducting. The incorporation of carbenes in the 2D-NCMs enables them to adsorb both acidic BCl3 and basic CO molecules, thus exhibiting unique amphoteric properties. Furthermore, the 2D-NCMs exhibit remarkable adsorption capacities for ten transition metals, highlighting their promising potential for future catalytic applications. By adjusting the proportions of the two classes of carbenes, we can effectively regulate the electronic properties and adsorption capacities of small molecules and transition metals in the 2D-NCMs. This study presents a novel strategy for designing and regulating properties of heterogeneous N-heterocyclic carbenes, offering significant implications in the fields of catalysis and material science.

Cu-NHC complexes are of low cost and low toxicity which are easily available via various synthetic routes. Their structural diversity and ease of structural modification offer excellent opportunities for their versatile applications in the fields of catalysis, medicine, and materials. This review summarizes the synthetic routes to Cu-NHC complexes, structural features, carbene transfer reactivities and their applications in synthesis of other metal-NHC complexes, as well as their applications in catalysis.

Abstract:Alkene functionalisation is a powerful strategy that has enabled access to a wide array of compounds including valuable pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. The reactivity of the alkene π-bond has allowed incorporation of a diverse range of atoms and functional groups through a wide variety of reaction pathways. N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are a class of persistent carbenes that are widely employed as ancillary ligands due to their ability to act as strong σ-donors compared to widely-applied conventional phosphine-based ligands. NHCs are also unique as their molecular bulk provides steric influence for regio- and stereo-control in many alkene functionalisation reactions, illustrated by the examples covered in this review. A combination of the unique reactivity of NHC ligands and nickel's characteristics has facilitated the design of reaction pathways that show distinct selectivity and reactivity, including the activation of bonds previously considered "inert", such as C–H bonds, the C–O bond of ethers and esters, and the C–N bonds of amides. This review summarises the advancements in Ni(NHC) catalysed alkene functionalisation up to 2022, covering the following major reaction classes: Heck-type reactions, hydrofunctionalisation and dicarbofunctionalisation.

Bonding of N-Heterocyclic Carbenes on Metal Nanoparticles

Abstract:This work studied the bonding of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) with systematic modifications to their structures, including their wingtips, functional groups, back- bones, metal surfaces, and orientation. We apply two separate analysis methods: en- ergy decomposition analysis with natural orbitals for chemical valence (EDA-NOCV) and intrinsic bonding orbitals (IBOs). We determined that the binding energy of these systems is described almost entirely by the orbital interaction energy as obtained by EDA-NOCV due to the dispersion being cancelled by the steric repulsion. We further explore the σ and π orbitals and how they change across systems. Finally, bis- complexes were explored via IBO, EDA-NOCV, and energy differences as compared to the monomeric versions. The two σ bonds connected the NHCs to the central Au atom are proposed to be 4-electron, 3-center bonds. We note that this is likely an accurate way to view bonds of monomeric NHCs on metal surfaces as well.

Abstract:N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-based cages have emerged as a prominent and dynamic research area within the research field of chemistry. Leveraging the distinctive electronic and steric properties of NHC ligands, the design, synthesis, and application of these corresponding cages have garnered substantial scholarly interest. In recent years, we have witnessed the successful fabrication of diverse NHC-based cages through a range of synthetic methodologies, which hold significant potential for applications in molecular recognition and catalysis. In this review, we delve into the foundational synthetic strategies that underlie the creation of NHC-based cages, employing approaches encompassing metal–NHC chelation, coordination assembly, and covalent bonding. Additionally, we compile the diverse applications of these cages within catalytic processes and molecular recognition. Lastly, we shed light on the current limitations of synthesis and outline future trends in the development of NHC-based cages.

Abstract:N -heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have been actively explored over the last 20 years and have become a firmly established ligand class in contemporary transition metal chemistry. The steric properties of these particular carbenes are mainly related to the shape, encumbrance and flexibility of their N-tethered groups, which in general can closely approach a coordinated metal centre and therefore impart high stability to the complexes formed. With regard to catalysis, continuous efforts have been made to make NHCs more efficacious by sophistication of their bulky structure, especially by varying the nature and size of the N -substituents. Herein, we highlight the properties of a less studied family of NHC ligands, namely those having at least one N atom substituted by a bulky 9-alkyl-9-fluorenyl substituent (abbr. A Flu ). Their coordinative and catalytic properties mostly reflect the presence of the extended, flat fluorene component of the A Flu group, which owing to its size favors specific conformations that result in metal complexes in which the metal centre is sterically protected either by the fluorene plane or by the C9-connected alkyl group.

Abstract:Heteroarene-linked bis(N-heterocyclic carbenes) constitute an important family of ligands in transition metal chemistry and homogeneous catalysis. These ligands are used as multidentate ligands for the construction of mononuclear and multinuclear complexes that show unique physical properties and that are efficient catalysts for many organic transformations. A number of transition metal complexes of heteroarene-linked bis(N-heterocyclic carbene) ligands have been synthesized and structurally characterized in recent decades. In this review, we summarize the recent developments in metal complexes supported by heteroarene-linked bis(N-heterocyclic carbene) ligands and their applications. The ligands and their complexes are categorized by the linkers between the two NHCs, such as pyridine, bipyridine, phenanthroline, naphthyridine, pyrazole, thiophene, and pyridazine.

Abstract:Imidazolium‐ylides are conjugated mesomeric betaines with an exocyclic anionic carbon substituent. These ylides were converted by deprotonation into anionic N‐heterocyclic carbenes, which can be formulated with two negative charges on the carbene carbon atom due to their origin. Subsequent reaction with selenium gave anionic selenourea compounds. In the past, the use of nitrogen ylides focused primarily on cycloadditions, where the 1,3‐dipole was used as a building block for the formation of heterocycles such as pyrroles or pyrrolinones. In this work, we present a new perspective on imidazolium dicyanomethylides with their synthesis and utilization as anionic N‐heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs). The values of relative carbene formation energies (CREF) for a wide range of substituted imidazolium ylides unknown in the literature showed promising properties. In situ trapping reactions of these anionic NHCs with selenium led to anionic, water‐soluble compounds that exhibited remarkable coordination behavior according to X‐ray structure analyses. In addition, the 77Se shifts of the investigated compounds were measured to draw conclusions about their π‐acceptance.

Abstract:Rigid terdentate 'pincer' ligands containing a bridgehead N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) donor attract considerable interest as spectators in transition metal complexes with broad scope and potential applications in the fields of catalysis, medicinal chemistry and material science. This review aims at compiling and evaluating the developments occurring in the area of complexes with these ligands. The various donor groups in the side-arms that can be associated with the bridgehead NHC donor provide considerable diversity and tunability of the pincer system. In addition to the distinct structural and reactivity features that are discussed in detail, comparisons with related pincer complexes based on all-classical donor sets or mixed donor sets with NHCs at the side-arm(s) only have been undertaken. The review comprises five major sections: the first attempting to differentiate the NHC bridgehead donor as structural element in the pincer ligand design; the following three describing in detail the synthesis, characterization and reactivity of metal complexes with ligand topologies featuring one, two or three NHC donors, respectively; finally the fifth compiling in a tabular format the catalytic applications of the complexes discussed previously, organized as a function of the catalytic reaction, the metal and the ligand type. The review provides a rationally organized coverage of the literature since 2005 in a diverse and fast expanding field dealing with pincer ligand design.

Stable N -Heterocyclic Carbenes with the N , N ′-Diarylquinazolin-4-one Backbone: Improved Synthesis, Electronic Properties, and Reactivity

Abstract:We present a new pathway toward cationic N,N′-diaryl-substituted quinazolin-4-one derivatives, which act as precursors for the synthesis of new N,N′-diaryl-amino-amido carbenes 5a,b that are stable under inert conditions. A tetrafluoro analogue 5c withstands isolation but can be prepared and employed in situ. The new NHCs exhibit a strong σ-donor capacity as well as strong π-accepting properties according to NMR and IR spectroscopic investigations indicated by the coupling constants 1 J C,H (210–214 Hz) and 77Se NMR resonances (545–654 ppm) of suitable derivatives. Remarkably, replacement of the hydrogen atoms of the anellated benzene ring by fluorine atoms exerts only a small effect on the overall donor properties of the carbene, as suggested by a small shift of the TEP values from 2053 cm–1 (5a) to 2055 cm–1 (5c). An ambiphilic reactivity of the NHCs 5 is supported by their reactions with isonitriles to provide the respective ketenimines 13, which show unprecedented rearrangement reactions, induced by either water or heat. The NHCs 5 also react with amines or methanol in N–H and O–H bond activations. The mechanisms of these activation reactions were investigated by quantum chemical calculations. Due to the apparent blue emission of the selected derivatives, the photophysical properties were exemplarily characterized in solution and solid state and assigned to the underlying electronic transitions by (TD)-DFT calculations.

Abstract:In the past two decades, NHCs (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbenes) have emerged as one of the most important classes of ligands in transition metal catalysis. Although historically 5-membered carbenes, such as imidazol-2-ylidenes, have been the dominant class of NHC ligands in transition metal catalysis, recently, ring expanded carbenes on 6-, 7-, 8-, 9- and 10-membered ring systems have been shown to provide significant advantages in numerous catalytic reactions embracing various metals, transformations and mechanisms. In this comprehensive review, we provide a survey of the applications of ring-expanded N-heterocyclic carbenes (reNHCs) in transition metal catalysis. Spanning from the initial reports on ring-expanded NHCs through June 2023, the review centers on the types of ring-expanded NHCs, their organometallic complexes and applications in catalytic processes. By delving into the impact of ring-expanded NHC ligands, the review aims to provide the reader with an understanding of the significance of this ligand class and its pivotal role in transition metal catalysis and organometallic chemistry.

Abstract:Metal carbenes usually possess versatile reactivities that are controlled by the presence of both the metals and the ligands. Diazo compounds are commonly used for the generation of such species through elimination of nitrogen. However, they are often unstable, explosive, and toxic, which limits their applications in large-scale syntheses. Thus, identifying sustainable and safe surrogates for the generation of metal carbenes has attracted great attention. In this Review, we summarize some of the most important breakthroughs in the generation, catalytic reactions, and selectivity control of metal carbenes from non-diazo starting compounds.
