Abstract:The likelihood of a galaxy with given intrinsic profile appearing in a photographic catalogue with limiting criteria on apparent magnitude and angular size will depend on the maximum distance at which such a galaxy can lie and still obey both criteria. We demonstrate that the corresponding volume in which the galaxy will be visible (here called its ‘visibility’, for short) is a sensitive function of the galaxy's central surface brightness as well as its absolute magnitude. Before the observed concentrations around preferred values of surface brightness can be regarded as real, it will be necessary to make allowance for this selection effect.
