Abstract:As social media has become more imperative in daily life, people pay more attention to self-presentation and impression management on social media, and some have even become psychologically dependent. There is a large group of socially addicted users who continuously strive to improve their online self-presentation. Due to stress and burnout arising from social media addiction, people change their social media behavior. The influence of mindfulness on social behavior cannot be ignored. This study aims to explore coping behaviors and the role of mindfulness for people under social media pressure and social media addiction in China’s special political environment. We found significant differences in self-presentation, social media pressure, and social media addiction among different circles in the Chinese context. Experiments have shown that people’s socially addictive behaviors and abilities to withstand social media pressure are affected by their mindfulness. In addition, the more social media pressure people perceive on social media, the more likely they are to stop using social media and shift to offline interpersonal interactions. However, when there are more offline interpersonal interactions, people’s willingness to return to social media platforms increases.

Abstract:This study explores the factors that influence the dissemination process of and public susceptibility to fake news amidst COVID-19. By adopting a qualitative approach that draws on 21 interviews with social media users from the standpoint of source credibility and construal level theories, our findings highlight motives of news sharers, platform features, and source credibility/relatedness as major factors influencing the dissemination of and public susceptibility to fake news. The paper further argues that public susceptibility to fake news can be mitigated by building an integrated approach that combines a tripartite strategy from an individual, institutional and platform level. For example, educating the public on digital resilience and enhancing awareness around source credibility can help individuals and institutions reflect on news authenticity and report fake news where possible. This study contributes to fake news literature by integrating concepts from information management, consumer behaviour, influencer marketing and mindfulness to propose a model to help authorities identify and understand the key factors that influence susceptibility to fake news during a public crisis such as COVID-19.

Abstract:Abstract Social networks have become a part of individual lives nowadays, and most of the world’s population participates and has accounts on different social networks. This is a new phenomenon specific to the twenty-first century, as a subject entirely related to the human mind in terms of psychology and psychiatry is at the beginning of research. This study aims to provide a psychological interpretation of social networking issues. The motives for using social networks are summarized within five main motivations: affinity, human needs, self-expression, information acquisition, and personal utility. Individuals use these networks as a source to hide their true personalities and show imaginary and desirable personalities. Despite the enjoyment of networks, individuals face two major risks: revenge porn and online bullying. Online social networks have many effects and dangers on individual mental health, so excessive use causes depression, anxiety, violence, addiction, and body image distortions in individuals. Although researchers focus on the negative effects of social networks, they still have several benefits for individual health.

Methods: A total of 2041 Chinese college students were recruited from different universities or colleges to complete the questionnaire including group identity scale, awe scale, empathy scale and social mindfulness scale. This study was conducted using random and convenient sampling, as well as SPSS and its plugin PROCESS as a statistical tool. Results: The present study showed that group identity was positively associated with awe and social mindfulness. Awe was positively associated with social mindfulness. Empathy further moderated the relationship between group identity and awe, awe and social mindfulness, as well as group identity and social mindfulness. Conclusion: The findings of this study shed light on a correlation between group identity and social mindfulness. Furthermore, this study emphasizes the practical importance of intervening in the empathy level of students who have poor empathy in order to increase their social mindfulness. According to the 49th Statistical Report on the Development of the Internet in China, the number of Chinese netizens had reached 1.032 billion by December 2021, with an Internet penetration rate of 73.0%. 1 With the advancement of Internet technology, social media has brought convenience to people and greatly changed their lifesty les. However, false information, internet fraud, pornography and violence, Internet addiction, etc., have a negative impact on people's ideological and moral awareness. Among them, cyber-violence is particularly concerning. College students, as one of the main users of social media on the Internet, are the group with the largest potential to be negatively impacted by cyber-violence, 2 such as personal attacks, intentional abuse, unauthorized disclosure of other people's information, as well as telephone and information harassment. Therefore, it is especially important in this type of environment to cultivate college students' social mindfulness. Social mindfulness is the propensity for people to pay close attention during interpersonal communication to respect and protect others' choices, needs, and rights. 3 Some researchers define it as a fundamental orientation reflecting the motivational state and stable behavior, which can be triggered by interpersonal relationships or situations and can also be found in individuals as a personality variable. 4 The theory of regulatory focus holds that the expression of social mindfulness is influenced by individuals' inferences about altruistic choices, 5 which stems from different interaction patterns caused by different cultural backgrounds. 6 In traditional Chinese culture, expressions reflecting the concept of social mindfulness have always existed, such as "kindness to others" and "benevolence". 7,8 "Social mindfulness" is regarded as the concrete embodiment of practicing the principle of "mindfulness" in practical life, which means that individuals consciously pay attention to and respect the needs of others' choices and protect their right to choose in interpersonal interaction. It should be noted that promoting and cultivating mindfulness has always been one of the core aims of education in China. 9 As the younger generation, college students shoulder the responsibility of the future social development of the country, whose healthy growth and interpersonal harmony are of great positive significance to universities and even the entire society. 10,11 Meanwhile, the level of social mindfulness can just reflect the degree of harmony in individual interpersonal relationships and their mental health literacy. Abstract:Mental illnesses are on the rise on campuses worldwide. There is a need for a scalable and economically sound innovation to address these mental health challenges. The aim of this study was to explore university students’ needs and concerns in relation to an online mental health virtual community. Eight focus groups ( N = 72, 55.6% female) were conducted with university students aged 18–47 (mean = 23.38, SD = 5.82) years. Participants were asked about their views in relation to online mental health platform. Three major themes and subthemes emerged: (1) perceived concerns: potential loss of personal encounter and relationships, fear of cyber bullying, engagement challenge, and privacy and distraction; (2) perceived advantages: anonymity and privacy, convenience and flexibility, filling a gap, and togetherness; and (3) desired features: user-centered design, practical trustworthy support, and online moderation. The analysis informed design features for a mindfulness virtual community.

Abstract:Interest in mindfulness meditation continues to grow as accumulating evidence suggests mindfulness training encourages more positive functioning. However, basic questions about the conditions best suited for realizing mindful states remain unanswered. Prominent among these is whether a group mindfulness practice setting is more effective for novice meditators than a solitary practice setting. Answering this question has assumed new urgency due to the imposition of physical distancing measures designed to stop the spread of COVID-19. In a time of limited social contact, is a simulated group practice setting better than practicing alone? This preliminary study investigated whether environmental setting impacted mindfulness practice experience by examining the effects of three simulated meditation practice environments (1. group practice, 2. nature practice, and 3. solitary practice) on state mindfulness and perceived social connectivity in a sample of novice meditators. Significant differences emerged across the three simulated practice settings. Findings suggest watching others meditate while meditating appears to most effectively induce a state of mindfulness and strengthen feelings of social connectivity. This study supports traditional beliefs about the benefits of group mindfulness practice. These findings also have implications for social workers struggling to stretch limited resources to address growing mental health demands, especially during times of heightened social isolation due to COVID-19. If a simulated group practice confers the same cognitive benefits as solitary practice while also conferring social benefits, simulated group instruction may be preferable for therapeutic and economic reasons.

Abstract:The internet facilitates the formation of the information society while also accelerating the viral spread of negative news and negative emotions, increasing public uncertainty and depression and impeding consensus, especially in the post-pandemic period. Mindfulness intervention, which has a positive effect on attention focus, self-regulation, and subjective wellbeing, is proven to mitigate negative emotional effects, and even alter mind patterns. The study aimed to give insight into the effect of mindfulness in the new media field, concerning trait mindfulness improvement, emotional arousal and regulation, and implicit attitudes from the perspective of intra-personal communication and positive communication. The study conducted a randomized pre-test–post-test control group design, with 3 (condition groups: mindfulness vs. placebo vs. control) × 2 (test times: pre vs. post). Participants who were exposed to negative news coverage with negative emotional arousal received 14 consecutive days of intervention. The results showed that mindfulness training can improve trait mindfulness effectively on the whole, especially in facets of describing, acting awareness, and non-judgment, and mitigate the negative effect from bad information coverage, while mindfulness intervention on mind patterns and expectations on controversial issues still awaited future empirical research. The present study intended to bridge the bonding between positive psychology and new media studies by focusing on individual attention improvement and negative emotion regulation, in the expectation that trait mindfulness can be beneficial in individual infodemic syndromes such as judgment bias and information exhaustion, and avoidance.

Beyond Meditation: Understanding Everyday Mindfulness Practices and Technology Use Among Experienced Practitioners

Abstract:Mindfulness, a practice of bringing attention to the present non-judgmentally, has many mental and physical well-being benefits, especially when practiced consistently. Many technologies have been invented to support solo or group mindfulness practice such as mobile apps, live streams, virtual reality environments, and wearables. In this paper, we present findings from an interview study with 20 experienced mindfulness practitioners about their everyday mindfulness practices and technology use. Participants identify the benefits and challenges of developing long-term commitment to mindfulness practice. They employ various strategies, such as brief mindfulness exercises, social accountability, and guidance from teachers, to sustain their practice. While conflicted about technology, they adopt and appropriate a range of technologies in their practice for reminders, emotion tracking, connecting with others, and attending online sessions. They also carefully consider when to use technology, when and how to limit its use, and ways to incorporate technology as an object for mindfulness. Based on our findings, we discuss expanding the definition of mindfulness and the tension between supporting short- and long-term mindfulness practice. We also propose a set of design recommendations to support everyday mindfulness including such as through the lens of metaphor, reappropriating non-mindfulness technology, and bringing community support into personal practice.

Abstract:Western Journal of Nursing Research: Special Issue on Mindfulness and HealthOver the past two decades, there has been increasing interest in the use of mindfulness-based interventions to promote health, facilitate adaptation to stressful life events, and to reduce symptoms of illness and disease across various age groups and populations. Recently, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reported that the use of meditation practices is one of the fastest growing health trends in the United States, with a threefold increase over five years (<a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">Clarke et al., 2018</a>). Furthermore, in the last decade, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have funded over 500 studies examining mindfulness and more than 1,200 clinical trials investigating mindfulness interventions have been published in peer-reviewed journals. Mindfulness-based programs are widely used in a variety of settings, including hospitals (<a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">Garland et al., 2017</a>), schools (<a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">Vickery & Dorjee, 2015</a>), workplaces (<a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">Heckenberg et al., 2018</a>), and in the military (<a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">Goldberg et al., 2020</a>), to name a few. In addition, over 200 apps are now available on smartphones and computers to guide mindfulness practice.

Abstract:There is growing concern over the emergence of damaging compulsive use patterns among some users of social networking sites (SNSs), in particular of mobile social media. Although previous studies argue that mindfulness has a protective effect on compulsive behaviors, to date, no study has analyzed the underlying mechanisms by which mindfulness reduces compulsive SNS usage. This study addresses this gap by examining the relationship between mindfulness, self-esteem, social anxiety, compulsive mobile SNS usage, and derived stress in the context of the use of the mobile social media application, WhatsApp™. Mediation analysis supported the roles of self-esteem and social anxiety as mediators of the beneficial (lowering) effect of mindfulness on compulsive mobile SNS usage. Moreover, the results confirmed that compulsive mobile SNS use induces stress and that mindfulness has also lowering effects on stress derived from such compulsive behavior, mediated by the former variables. This research, therefore, provides a process explanation for the beneficial effect of mindfulness on stress derived from mobile social media use. Further theoretical and practical implications, as well as future research avenues, are discussed.

The employee relationship are highly under stake when they are social media addict. This study would attempt to understand the empirical evidence on this relationship by examining the association among addiction in social media and its effect on culture code and mediating role of mindfulness. This study also concentrates on the moderating role of gender on the proposed model.

Abstract:In the past two decades, the pervasive influence of new media has significantly shaped the lives of today's youth, presenting both unprecedented opportunities and unique challenges. Social networking platforms offer daily avenues for connecting with peers, classmates, and like-minded individuals. Extensive research has started to uncover the impact of social media experiences on adolescents' mental well-being. While acknowledging their developmental benefits, it's imperative to recognize the potential risks associated with excessive social media engagement, particularly concerning the emotional health of young individuals. This research delves into the potential and challenges posed by social media platforms on the mental health of youths. However, as the digital landscape continues to evolve rapidly, further investigation is essential. Present studies often rely on self-reported data on adolescent media usage, limited to singular time points, thereby hindering definitive conclusions on whether media use directly influences mental health outcomes or vice versa. Future research should adopt more comprehensive approaches, such as direct observation of adolescents' social media activities, and move beyond traditional notions of mere "screen time." It's crucial to explore specific social media experiences and individual traits that render certain adolescents more susceptible to the positive or negative effects of social media. Abstract:In the digital age, social media marketing has drastically altered social connections and customer behavior. With an emphasis on how social media marketing influences consumer attitudes, cultural norms, and mental health, this study explores the numerous ways that social media marketing impacts society. As businesses utilize Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter more and more to communicate with big audiences, understanding these consequences is critical. The study aims to determine how social media marketing affects, among other aspects of society, social interactions, cultural perspectives, consumer behavior, and mental health. The study makes use of secondary data collection methods, including a comprehensive survey of the literature. Thematic analysis is used to find patterns and gather data. Significant research demonstrates that social media marketing significantly increases consumer involvement through customized campaigns and user-generated content, which fortifies brand loyalty and influences consumer behavior. It does, however, also reinforce cultural norms and prejudices while offering the possibility of societal transformation. Virtual communities are known to be altering social interactions, but using them excessively might lead to social isolation. Negative pressure to maintain idealized online personas and constructive criticism are both hazardous to mental health. The growing importance of influencer marketing is emphasized, but so are privacy and ethical issues around data collection and targeted advertising. With cutting-edge technologies like augmented reality, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence, social media marketing is set to undergo yet another revolution. The study offers several recommendations, such as enhancing the personalization of marketing campaigns, utilizing user-generated content, balancing cultural representation, lessening the detrimental effects of social interactions, prioritizing mental health, addressing ethical and privacy issues, ensuring that influencer marketing is genuine, and embracing emerging technologies. Future research on these processes is warranted, focusing on the moral implications and challenges of developing technologies. This in-depth investigation highlights how important it is to act ethically and continuously adapt to the ever-changing world of social media marketing.
An Examination of College Students’ Social Media Use, Fear of Missing Out, and Mindful Attention

Abstract:This study investigated problematic social media use (PSMU), the fear of missing out (FOMO), mindful attention, self-esteem, and life satisfaction among 278 undergraduate students. Results indicated that PSMU and FOMO negatively related to mindful attention, self-esteem, and life satisfaction. The mediation model suggested that mindful attention inversely mediated the relationship between FOMO and PSMU. Thus, FOMO predicted PSMU in users who were less mindfully attentive. We discuss the results, limitations, implications, and recommendations for research.

Abstract:Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated social media addiction (SMA), making it urgent to find effective interventions for social media addiction. Evidence has shown that mindfulness might be an effective intervention for social media addiction. However, psychological mechanisms by which mindfulness reduce social media use remain unclear. Here, we further addressed this issue to examine whether attentional control and fear of missing out (FOMO) mediate the relationship between mindfulness and SMA. Methods: We recruited 446 college students from two universities in China and analyzed the data. Results: The results suggest that there are mediation effects of attentional control and FOMO between mindfulness and SMA through 3 paths: path 1, mindfulness → attention control → SMA (−0.04); path 2, mindfulness → FOMO → SMA (−0.22); and path 3, mindfulness → attention control → FOMO → SMA (−0.05). Discussion: Therefore, mindfulness-based interventions may be an effective way to alleviate social media addiction, especially mindfulness-based interventions targeting FOMO. At the end of the article, we also discussed the limitations of this study.

Abstract:Previous research has shown the capacity for mindfulness to be strongly associated with psychological well-being, that components of mindfulness show significant growth through young adulthood, and that this developing, malleable capacity is vital as individuals learn to deal appropriately with negative thoughts and unwelcome emotions. Smartphones, typically used in an automatic or experientially avoidant way, can undermine this development, leading to a decreased capacity for mindfulness. The purpose of these studies were to examine the extent to which smartphone use is negatively associated with young adults' mindfulness and the degree to which increased cognitive and behavioral involvement with smartphones may exacerbate this relation using a newly developed conceptual model.

The demand for social media has increased due to developments in digital services and infrastructure brought about by government regulatory frameworks and other initiatives, as well as the availability of low-cost, high-speed data, appropriate content, and mobile apps. Additionally, mobile devices have become more affordable and sophisticated (Duhan and Singh, 2013). In addition, social media has given users new and innovative virtual platforms to interact, communicate, socialize, discover new information, and stay up to date on concepts, ideas, and products that may be of interest to them when making decisions about what to buy. Consumer decision-making has changed in the social web era due to the introduction of new influences such as brand community discussions and online brand endorsements (Constantinides and Fountain, 2008; Edelman, 2010). Social networks assist consumers in making decisions and sharing information (Milovic, 2018). In recent times, there has been an unparalleled surge in consumer interactions due to the availability of various forms of user-generated content such as text, photographs, and videos, as well as the chance to interact with friends, make new ones, and discover emerging trends (Giannakos et al., 2013). Mostly, people use these kinds of media to browse through information available on online forums and stay up to date on the latest developments in companies and goods.

Abstract:[Objective] The rapid development of digital technology in modern society has brought about great changes in the field of education. This study explores how digital technology can be applied to mindfulness education. The purpose of the study is to forecast the future of mindfulness education by investigating innovations in mindfulness education using digital technology and the latest research trends. [Contents] The study examines the importance and effectiveness of digital mindfulness education and analyzes how various digital technologies (online platforms, mobile apps, VR, XR, AI, Wearable, etc.) are integrated and applied to mindfulness education. We highlighted the new educational methods and advantages provided by these technologies, and explored the possibilities for innovation and future development in mindfulness education. [Conclusions] The conclusion of this study is as follows. Digital mindfulness education utilizes the latest technology to increase accessibility, improve interaction between instructors and students, and provide personalized mindfulness, so various mindfulness intervention effects were found beyond face-to-face education. In particular, it provided important insights into the effective use and development direction of digital technology in mindfulness education, suggesting a path forward for mindfulness education in the rapidly changing digital age.
