This review explores SeNP synthesis methods, emphasizing how they influence functionality in diverse applications. Chemical, physical, and biological approaches tailor SeNP size, shape, and surface chemistry, impacting their biocompatibility and potential for drug delivery, imaging, and therapy. SeNPs' remarkable electrochemical and optical properties position them for advancements in biosensing and diagnostics. However, challenges in consistent production, large-scale synthesis, and potential toxicity demand attention. We provide a concise analysis of current SeNP research, encompassing synthesis strategies, characterization techniques, and a broad spectrum of biomedical applications, while also addressing ongoing challenges and future directions in this rapidly evolving field.

Abstract:Selenium is a trace and necessary micronutrient for human, animal, and microbial health. Many researchers have recently been interested in selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) due to their biocompatibility, bioavailability, and low toxicity. As a result of their greater bioactivity, selenium nanoparticles are widely employed in a variety of biological applications. Physical, chemical, and biological approaches can all be used to synthesize selenium nanoparticles. Since it uses non-toxic solvents and operates at a suitable temperature, the biological technique is a preferable option. This review article addresses the processes implemented in the synthesis of SeNPs and highlights their medicinal uses, such as the treatment of fungi, bacteria, cancer, and wounds. Furthermore, we discuss the most recent findings on the potential of several biological materials for selenium nanoparticle production. The precursor, extract, process, time, temperature, and other synthesis criteria will be elaborated in conjunction with the product's physical properties (size, shape, and stability). The synergies of SeNP synthesis via various methods aid future researchers in precisely synthesizing SeNPs and using them in desired applications.

Abstract:Selenium nanoparticles have been shown to be versatile in their applications by being used in catalysis, solar cells, electronic devices and especially in medical applications such as antiviral, anticancer, antitumor and antibacterial agents in different concentrations. They have also shown enhanced drug and gene delivery by conjugating with drug molecules and showing high synergistic effects. After realising their usefulness in the biomedical field, we have made a sincere effort to correlate and consolidate the recent developments made in their synthesis methods, structural features and biological applications. This review paper highlights the three preparation methods, being the chemical, physical and biological approaches. The variation in the different techniques employed for synthesis and the different parameters and process conditions dictating the size and morphology are discussed. The importance and influence of various reducing agents used in the chemical method, pulsed laser ablation technique in the physical method and green plant extract microorganism in the biological approach have been explored. The detailed structural features of trigonal crystalline structures, with different nanoscaled morphologies such as nano spheres, rods, wires, tubes and belts have also been explored. An overview of selenium nanoparticle activity in various biomedical applications such as anticancer, antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, and antidiabetics is discussed.

Abstract:The review provides an essential insight into the nanotechnology principles for nano-selenium based materials mainly selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), selenium nanocomposite (SeNC) and how they can be synthesized, utilized in biomedicine. Various methods of synthesis of nano selenium have revealed extensively in this study. Applications in biomedicine as potential pharmacological agents like antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-diabetic, and anti-oxidative activities have been described extensively in this investigation. The study also demonstrates various methods for the determination of toxicity associated nano selenium under in vitro and in vivo conditions using simple, cost-effective, and green technology principles. In vitro toxicity methods include the use of selected cell lines in which cytotoxic effects can be determined. Phytotoxicity screening is another simplest and reliable method of toxicity assessment. Various animal models like rats, mice, and zebrafish have been widely employed to study the nano selenium-induced toxic effect. Further study will be helpful to explicit the nanotechnology principle of nanoscale derived selenium nanomaterials on diverse applications with high biocompatibility and environmentally friendly.

Abstract:As an essential micronutrient, the selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) are gaining much importance in therapeutics, agriculture, nutrient supplements, and antimicrobial agents. Different techniques can synthesize these SeNPs. Nowadays, biological synthesis is favored because it is environmentally safe, least toxic, more stable, and requires less energy. The whole microbial cells or their extracts with added selenium oxyanions or selenium dioxides as the precursor synthesize SeNPs after incubation. The elemental selenium (Se 0 ) is significantly less toxic than its oxyanions, selenite, and selenate. Selenomethionine and selenocysteine are the primary organic forms of Se, involved in many proteins. Therefore, transforming these toxic materials into a biologically safe atomic structure becomes essential. Many microorganisms convert the environmentally available toxic selenium oxyanions such as selenate or selenite into less toxic elemental Se nanoparticles (Se 0 ). These microbes work as bio-nano-factories that utilize the Se anions into their metabolic pathways and detoxify them by forming the nanomaterial as the byproduct. In respiration, they may even use the selenite /selenate as a final electron acceptor. This review focuses on the biological methods for SeNPs synthesis, using various microbes reported and their applications in different fields.

Abstract:Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) are a unique type of nano-sized elemental selenium that have recently found wide application in biomedicine. It has been shown that the properties of SeNPs can be varied by different fabrication methods. Moreover, SeNPs have various therapeutic effects in medical applications due to their excellent biological and adaptable physical properties. At the same time, SeNPs can be used as a carrier medium for various therapeutic substances, which can bring out the full curative effects of the drugs. In this review, the differences in bioactivity properties of SeNPs prepared from different substances were reviewed; the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of SeNPs in cancer, inflammation, neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, reproductive diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and other diseases were discussed; and the importance of the development of SeNPs was further emphasized.

Abstract:Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) are extremely popular objects in nanotechnology. “Green” synthesis has special advantages due to the growing necessity for environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and low-cost methods. This review considers the biosynthesis mechanism of bacteria, fungi, algae, and plants, including the role of various biological substances in the processes of reducing selenium compounds to SeNPs and their further packaging. Modern information and approaches to the possible biomedical use of selenium nanoparticles are presented: antimicrobial, antiviral, anticancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and other properties, as well as the mechanisms of these processes, that have important potential therapeutic value.

Abstract:<p>In recent years, researches on selenium nanoparticle have gained more attention due to its important role in many physiological processes. Generally, selenium nanoparticle has a high level of absorption in regular supplementation comparative to selenium. Therefore it is all-important to develop new techniques to elevate the transportation of selenium compounds (selenoproteins, selenoenzymes, etc.) by increasing their bioavailability, bioactivity, and controlled release. SeNPs have special attention regarding their application as food additives and therapeutic agents. Selenium nanoparticle has biomedical and pharmaceutical uses due to its antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, and anticancer effects. Selenium nanoparticle is also used to antagonize the toxic effect of chemical and heavy metals. SeNPs are beneficial for the treatment of water and soil contaminated with metals and heavy metals as it has adsorption capability. Selenium nanoparticle is synthesized by the bioreduction of selenium species (sodium selenate, sodium selenite, selenium dioxide, and selenium tetrachloride, etc.) by using bacteria, fungi, plant, and plant extracts, which have given hope for the bioremediation of selenium contaminated water and soils. This article reviews the procedure of selenium nanoparticle synthesis (physical, chemical and biological methods), characterization (UV- visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Scanning electron microscopy, electron dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, etc.), with the emphasis on its role and application in health and environment.</p>

Abstract:Selenium is a trace nutrient that has both nutritional and nutraceutical functions, whereas narrow nutritional range of selenium intake limits its use. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) are less toxic and more bioavailable than traditional forms of selenium, suggesting that SeNPs have the potential to replace traditional selenium in food industries and/or biomedical fields. From the perspective of how SeNPs can be applied in health area, this review comprehensively discusses SeNPs in terms of its preparation, nutritional aspect, detoxification effect of heavy metals, nutraceutical functions and anti-pathogenic microorganism effects. By physical, chemical, or biological methods, inorganic selenium can be transformed into SeNPs which have increased stability and bioavailability as well as low toxicity. SeNPs are more effective than traditional selenium form in synthesizing selenoproteins like glutathione peroxidases. SeNPs can reshape the digestive system to facilitate digestion and absorption of nutrients. SeNPs have shown excellent potential to adjunctively treat cancer patients, enhance immune system, control diabetes, and prevent rheumatoid arthritis. Additionally, SeNPs have good microbial anti-pathogenic effects and can be used with other antimicrobial agents to fight against pathogenic bacteria, fungi, or viruses. Development of novel SeNPs with enhanced functions can greatly benefit the food-, nutraceutical-, and biomedical industries.

Abstract:Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) are gaining importance in the field of medicine owing to their antibacterial and anticancer properties. SeNPs are biocompatible and non-toxic compared to the counterparts, selenite (SeO3 (-2)) and selenate (SeO4 (-2)). They can be synthesized by physical, chemical, and biological methods and have distinct bright orange-red color. Biogenic SeNPs are stable and do not aggregate owing to natural coating of the biomolecules. Various hypotheses have been proposed to describe the mechanism of microbial synthesis of SeNPs. It is primarily a two-step reduction process from SeO4 (-2) to SeO3 (-2) to insoluble elemental selenium (Se(0)) catalyzed by selenate and selenite reductases. Phenazine-1-carboxylic acid and glutathione are involved in selenite reduction. Se factor A (SefA) and metalloid reductase Rar A present on the surface of SeNPs confer stability to the nanoparticles. SeNPs act as potent chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic agents. Conjugation with antibiotics enhances their anticancer efficacy. These also have applications in nanobiosensors and environmental remediation.

Abstract:Selenium is a trace element required for the active function of numerous enzymes and various physiological processes. In recent years, selenium nanoparticles draw the attention of scientists and researchers because of its multifaceted uses. The process involved in chemically synthesized SeNPs has been found to be hazardous in nature, which has paved the way for safe and ecofriendly SeNPs to be developed in order to achieve sustainability. In comparison to chemical synthesis, SeNPs can be synthesized more safely and with greater flexibility utilizing bacteria, fungi, and plants. This review focused on the synthesis of SeNPs utilizing bacteria, fungi, and plants; the mechanisms involved in SeNP synthesis; and the effect of various abiotic factors on SeNP synthesis and morphological characteristics. This article discusses the synergies of SeNP synthesis via biological routes, which can help future researchers to synthesize SeNPs with more precision and employ them in desired fields.

Abstract:The nanoparticles (NPs) of metals and metal oxides constitute significant components of technology in terms of monometallic NPs (MNPs). Over the last decade, the most fascinating and in-depth uses of NPs have been found in the biomedical field, which has demonstrated the therapeutic potential of these particles. Significant strides have been made in the application of nanotechnology across various industries, including biomedical sciences. In biomedicine, two of the most important applications of NPs are in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Given their ability to deliver specific drugs, these next-generation NPs provide safe and effective pharmacotherapies for a wide range of disorders. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) NPs offer potential treatments for various applications, including hair care and cancer treatment. SeNPs help with abiotic stress, plant disease, and growth, while TiO2 NPs enhance bio-imaging and drug delivery. This comprehensive review focuses on MNPs like Se (metal-based) and TiO2 (metal-oxide based). Abstract:Traditional supplements of selenium generally have a low degree of absorption and increased toxicity. Therefore, it is imperative to develop innovative systems as transporters of selenium compounds, which would raise the bioavailability of this element and allow its controlled release in the organism. Nanoscale selenium has attracted a great interest as a food additive especially in individuals with selenium deficiency, but also as a therapeutic agent without significant side effects in medicine. This review is focused on the incorporation of nanotechnological applications, in particular exploring the possibilities of a more effective way of administration, especially in selenium-deficient organisms. In addition, this review summarizes the survey of knowledge on selenium nanoparticles, their biological effects in the organism, advantages, absorption mechanisms, and nanotechnological applications for peroral administration.

Abstract:Selenium is an essential trace mineral for plants. It is required for redox processes in cells, the synthesis of necessary compounds, and resistance against stresses of various nature. Interest in the use of nanoscale selenium for plant treatment is now increasing due to both a deficiency of selenium in soils and the toxicity of selenium compounds. This review discusses in detail the approaches for the synthesis of selenium nanoparticles: physical and chemical methods, as well as the use of living organisms (plants, bacteria, and fungi). The latter approach to nanoparticle synthesis has been gaining popularity in recent years due to the variety of reducing enzymes in organisms. In general, the effect of nanoselenium on plants depends on the size of nanoparticles and on the concentration applied. Available research demonstrates the positive effect of nanoselenium on plant viability and the resistance against stress. It is assumed that this effect is associated with (i) an increase in the intensity of photosynthesis, (ii) a change in the fatty acid profile of lipids, (iii) a decrease in lipid peroxidation, (iv) an increase in the content of essential organic compounds in plant tissues, as well as (v) an increase in the activity of antioxidant enzymes as a result of the influence of selenium nanoparticles.

Abstract:This review presents the latest data on the importance of selenium nanoparticles in human health, their use in medicine, and the main known methods of their production by various methods. In recent years, a multifaceted study of nanoscale complexes in medicine, including selenium nanoparticles, has become very important in view of a number of positive features that make it possible to create new drugs based on them or significantly improve the properties of existing drugs. It is known that selenium is an essential trace element that is part of key antioxidant enzymes. In mammals, there are 25 selenoproteins, in which selenium is a key component of the active site. The important role of selenium in human health has been repeatedly proven by several hundred works in the past few decades; in recent years, the study of selenium nanocomplexes has become the focus of researchers. A large amount of accumulated data requires generalization and systematization in order to improve understanding of the key mechanisms and prospects for the use of selenium nanoparticles in medicine, which is the purpose of this review.

Abstract:Selenium (Se) is an essential element to human health that can be obtained in nature through several sources. In the human body, it is incorporated into selenocysteine, an amino acid used to synthesize several selenoproteins, which have an active center usually dependent on the presence of Se. Although Se shows several beneficial properties in human health, it has also a narrow therapeutic window, and therefore the excessive intake of inorganic and organic Se-based compounds often leads to toxicity. Nanoparticles based on Se (SeNPs) are less toxic than inorganic and organic Se. They are both biocompatible and capable of effectively delivering combinations of payloads to specific cells following their functionalization with active targeting ligands. Herein, the main origin of Se intake, its role on the human body, and its primary biomedical applications are revised. Particular focus will be given to the main therapeutic targets that are explored for SeNPs in cancer therapies, discussing the different functionalization methodologies used to improve SeNPs stability, while enabling the extensive delivery of drug-loaded SeNP to tumor sites, thus avoiding off-target effects.

Abstract:Selenium is one of the eight necessary trace elements humans require for active health balance. It contributes in several ways to the proper functioning of selenoprotein. Selenium has received enormous interest recently due to its therapeutic potential against a number of ailments. To date, numerous chemical compounds containing selenium have been investigated for the therapy of cancer and other disorders. Unifying the selenium atom into chemical components (typically organic) greatly increased their bioactivities. We foresee that the structure–property relationship of recently developed materials could significantly decrease the laborious work of background research to achieve target-oriented drug design in coming years. This review summarizes the research progress in the last 10 to 15 years and the application of selenium-containing compounds in the design and synthesis of those materials for potential antioxidant and anticancer agents.

Abstract:In recent years, the demand for advanced biomedical nanomaterials has seen a noticeable surge. Among the essential trace elements in the human body, selenium has gained recognition for its anti-cancer, antioxidant, and immune regulatory properties. However, traditional selenium-based semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are often comprised of heavy metal elements that tend to be toxic, thereby limiting their usage in biomedical applications. Fortunately, the advent of elemental selenium quantum dots (SeQDs), a new kind of fluorescent nanomaterial with unique physicochemical properties, has provided a solution to this problem. These SeQDs are known for their low toxicity and good biocompatibility, making them a promising candidate for biomedical applications. In this mini-review, we delve into the synthesis methods of fluorescent SeQDs and the latest progress in their applications in bioimaging, biosensing, and diagnosis treatment. Finally, we identify the major challenges and future prospects in the field of SeQDs.
