Abstract:The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of seed pre-treatment with varying concentrations of salicylic acid (SA) on antioxidant response of wheat seedlings. Pre-treatment of seeds with 40 and 70 ppm of SA enhanced antioxidant response of wheat by up-regulating antioxidative enzymes, viz., superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutathione reductase (GR) and increasing contents of proline and ascorbic acid. Exogenous application of lower concentrations of SA enhanced membrane stability as revealed from reduced lipid peroxidation in the form of malondialdehyde (MDA) content. However, 200 ppm of SA inhibited growth, which was accompanied by decreased activities of SOD, CAT, APX and GR leading to accumulation of hydrogen peroxide and MDA contents. Thus, seed priming with 40 and 70 ppm of SA can be used to trigger the activation of antioxidants in wheat seedlings.
