Abstract:BACKGROUND:The increasing use of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) will inevitably lead to the exposure of wastewater treatment facilities. However, knowledge of the impacts of MWCNTs on wastewater nutrient removal and bacterial community structure in the activated sludge process is sparse. AIMS:To investigate the effects of MWCNTs on wastewater nutrient removal, and bacterial community structure in activated sludge. METHODS:Three triplicate sequencing batch reactors (SBR) were exposed to wastewater which contained 0, 1, and 20 mg/L MWCNTs. MiSeq sequencing was used to investigate the bacterial community structures in activated sludge samples which were exposed to different concentrations of MWCNTs. RESULTS:Exposure to 1 and 20 mg/L MWCNTs had no acute (1 day) impact on nutrient removal from wastewater. After long-term (180 days) exposure to 1 mg/L MWCNTs, the average total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency was not significantly affected. TN removal efficiency decreased from 84.0% to 71.9% after long-term effects of 20 mg/L MWCNTs. After long-term exposure to 1 and 20 mg/L MWCNTs, the total phosphorus removal efficiencies decreased from 96.8% to 52.3% and from 98.2% to 34.0% respectively. Further study revealed that long-term exposure to 20 mg/L MWCNTs inhibited activities of ammonia monooxygenase and nitrite oxidoreductase. Long-term exposure to 1 and 20 mg/L MWCNTs both inhibited activities of exopolyphosphatase and polyphosphate kinase. MiSeq sequencing data indicated that 20 mg/L MWCNTs significantly decreased the diversity of bacterial community in activated sludge. Long-term exposure to 1 and 20 mg/L MWCNTs differentially decreased the abundance of nitrifying bacteria, especially ammonia-oxidizing bacteria. The abundance of PAOs was decreased after long-term exposure to 20 mg/L MWCNTs. The abundance of glycogen accumulating organisms (GAOs) was increased after long-term exposure to 1 mg/L MWCNTs. CONCLUSION:MWCNTs have adverse effects on biological wastewater nutrient removal, and altered the diversity and structure of bacterial community in activated sludge.

Abstract:The increasing use of raw carbon-based nanomaterials (CBNs) will inevitably affect wastewater treatment systems. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are ecological wastewater treatment facilities and can intercept the vast particles pollutant, including CBNs. However, the impacts of CBNs on the treatment performance of CWs have no available knowledge. Therefore, we systematically inspected the effects of single-walled and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs and MWCNTs) and fullerene nanoparticles (C60) on CW performance under 180-day exposure to 0, 10 and 1000 μg/L concentrations. The results showed that CBNs had marginally adverse impacts on chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total phosphorus (TP) removal, whereas nitrogen removal declined by 24.1 %–42.7 % following long-term exposure to CBNs. MWCNTs had the greatest inhibition effect on nitrogen removal, followed by SWCNTs and C60. The CBNs also induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduction as the increasing concentration, which confirmed that CBNs have biotoxic effects in CWs. The variation of functional microbial community and the inhibition of enzyme activities were the dominant reasons for the decline in nitrogen removal efficiency. Furthermore, predictive functional profiling showed that CBNs affected functional gene abundance, and caused a decline in the enzymes abundance connected to nitrogen removal by the end of the 180-day exposure period.

Insights into Long-Term Effects of Amino-Functionalized Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (Mwcnts-Nh2) on the Performance, Enzymatic Activity and Microbial Community of Sequencing Batch Reactor.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) inevitably enter domestic sewage and industrial wastewater with the continuous increase of their production and application field. The potential effect of CNTs on biological wastewater treatment processes has raised wide concerns due to their biotoxicity. In the present study, the performance, microbial community and enzymatic activity of sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were evaluated under 148-day exposure of amino-functionalized multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs-NH2) at 10 and 30 mg/L. The COD removal efficiency at 10 and 30 mg/L MWCNTs-NH2 gradually reduced from 91.03% and 90.43% on day to 89.11% and 86.70% on day 148, respectively. The NH4+-N removal efficiency at 10 and 30 mg/L MWCNTs-NH2 gradually reduced from 98.98% and 98.46% on day 1 to 96.65% and 63.39% on day 148, respectively. Compared to 0 mg/L MWCNTs-NH2, the oxygen-utilizing rate, ammonia-oxidizing rate, nitrite-oxidizing rate, nitrite-reducing rate and nitrate-reducing rate at 30 mg/L MWCNTs-NH2 were decreased by 52.35%, 60.58%, 55.12%, 56.56% and 57.42% on day 148, respectively. The microbial reactive oxygen species and lactate dehydrogenase release on day 148 was increased by 59.71% and 55.28% at 30 mg/L MWCNTs-NH2, respectively. The key microbial enzymatic activity related to nitrogen removal decreased with the increase of operation time under MWCNTs-NH2 stress. The relative abundances of Nitrosomonas, Nitrosospira, Nitrospira and some denitrifying bacteria at 10 mg/L MWCNTs-NH2 gradually reduced with an increment in operation time. The changes of nitrogen removal rate, microbial community and enzymatic activity of SBR were related to the time-cumulative nonlinear inhibition effect under long-term exposure.

Abstract:The ecological effects of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been a worldwide research focus due to their extensive release and accumulation in environment. Activated sludge acting as an important gathering place will inevitably encounter and interact with CNTs, while the microbial responses have been rarely investigated. Herein, the activated sludges from six wastewater treatment plants were acclimated and treated with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) under identical conditions. Illumina high-throughput sequencing was applied to in-depth analyze microbial changes and results showed SWCNTs differently perturbed the alpha diversity of the six groups (one increase, two decrease, three no change). Furthermore, the microbial community structures were shifted, and specific bacterial performance in each group was different. Since the environmental and operational factors were identical in each group, it could be concluded that microbial responses to SWCNTs were highly depended on the original community structures.

Responses of Microbial Communities to Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes in Phenol Wastewater Treatment Systems.

Abstract:The expanding use of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) raises environmental concerns. Wastewater treatment systems are potential recipients of SWCNTs containing influent, yet the impacts of SWCNTs on these systems are poorly documented. In this study, the microbial responses to SWCNTs in simulated phenol wastewater treatment systems were investigated. The phenol removal rates were improved in all SWCNTs-treated sequencing batch reactors during the first 20 days, but when facing higher phenol concentration (1000 mg/L) after 60 days, reactors with the highest concentration (3.5 g/L) of SWCNTs exhibited a notably decreased phenol removal capacity. Cell viability tests, scanning electron microscopy analysis and DNA leakage data suggested that SWCNTs protected microbes from inactivation, possibly by producing more bound extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), which could create a protective barrier for the microbes. Illumina sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons revealed that the bacterial diversity did not change significantly except for a minor reduction after the immediate addition of SWCNTs. Bacterial community structure significantly shifted after SWCNTs addition and did not recover afterward. Zoogloea increased significantly upon SWCNTs shocking. At the final stage, Rudaea and Mobilicoccus increased, while Burkholderia, Singulisphaera, Labrys and Mucilaginibacter decreased notably. The shifts of these dominant genera may be associated with altered sludge settling, aromatic degradation and EPS production. This study suggested that SWCNTs exerted protective rather than cytotoxic effects on sludge microbes of phenol wastewater treatment systems and they affected the bacterial community structure and diversity at test concentrations. These findings provide new insights into our understanding of the potential effects of SWCNTs on wastewater treatment processes.

Abstract:The increasing use of copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) raises concerns about their potential toxic effects on the environment. However, their influences on wastewater biological nutrient removal (BNR) and nitrous oxide (N2O) generation in the activated sludge process have never been documented. In this study the long-term effects of Cu NPs (0.1-10 mg/L) on BNR and N2O generation were investigated. The total nitrogen (TN) removal was enhanced and N2O generation was reduced at any Cu NPs levels investigated, but both ammonia and phosphorus removals were not affected. The mechanism studies showed although most of the Cu NPs were absorbed to activated sludge, the activated sludge surface was not damaged, and the released copper ion from Cu NPs dissolution was the main reason for TN removal improvement and N2O reduction. It was also found that the transformation of polyhydroxyalkanoates and the activities of ammonia monooxygenase, nitrite oxidoreductase, exopolyphosphatase, and polyphosphate kinase were not affected by Cu NPs, whereas the decreased metabolism of glycogen and the increased activities of denitrification enzymes were observed. Further investigation revealed that Cu NPs increased the number of denitrifiers (especially N2O reducing denitrifiers) but decreased nitrite accumulation. All these observations were in correspondence with the enhancement of TN removal and reduction of N2O generation.

Abstract:Recently, a large quantity of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) enters the environment due to the increasing production and applications. More and more researches are focused on the fate and possible ecological risks of CNTs. Some literatures summarized the effects of CNTs on the chemical behavior and fate of pollutants. However, little reviewed the effects of CNTs on the biodegradation of pollutants. In general, the effects of CNTs on the biodegradation of pollutants and the related mechanisms were summarized in this review. CNTs have positive or negative effects on the biodegradation of contaminants by affecting the functional microorganisms, enzymes and the bioavailability of pollutants. CNTs may affect the microbial growth, activity, biomass, community composition, diversity and the activity of enzymes. The decrease of the bioavailability of pollutants due to the sorption on CNTs also causes the reduction of the biodegradation of contaminants. In addition, the roles of CNTs are controlled by multiple mechanisms, which are divided into three aspects i.e., properties of CNTs, environment condition, and microorganisms themself. The better understanding of the fate of CNTs and their impacts on the biochemical process in the environment is conducive to determine the release of CNTs into the environment.

Abstract:In this study, the morphology, ultrastructure, nutrient removal, metabolite levels, and interaction of an algal-bacterial consortium exposed to different concentrations of carboxylic single-walled carbon nanotubes (C-SWCNT) were investigated. At a C-SWCNT concentration of 0.05 mg . L-1, the removal rates of TN, NH3-N, PO43--P, and COD were 94.7%, 94.8%, 86.4% and 84.3%, respectively. When cells were exposed to 50 mg . L-1 C-SWCNT, its intracellular levels in individual algae and the algal-bacterial consortium were 23.6 mu g . g(-1 )and 12.1 mu g . g(-1), respectively. C-SWCNT (0.05 mg . L-1) promoted the metabolism of fatty adds, amino acids, small molecules, and acid in the algal-bacterial consortium. The main response to the interaction of C-SWCNT and the consortium was the change in extracellular carbohydrate levels. C-SWCNT also increased chlorophyll a and glycine levels. These findings reveal new insights into our understanding of the biological responses and interactions between C-SWCNT and algal-bacterial consortium. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Long-term Effects of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes on the Performance and Microbial Community Structures of an Anaerobic Granular Sludge System.

Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) released into the sewage may cause negative and/or positive effects on the treatment system. The objective of this study was to explore over 110 days’ effect of MWCNTs on the performance of anaerobic granular sludge and microbial community structures in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. The results showed that MWCNTs had no significant effect on the removal of chemical oxidation demand (COD) and ammonia in UASB reactor, but the total phosphorus (TP) removal efficiency increased by 29.34%. The biogas production of the reactor did not change. The anaerobic granular sludge tended to excrete more EPS to resist the effects of MWCNTs during the long-term impact. Illumina MiSeq sequencing of 16S rRNA gene revealed that MWCNTs did not affect the microbial diversity, but altered the composition and structure of microbial community in the reactor. In this process, Saccharibacteria replaced Proteobacteria as the highest abundant bacterial phylum. MWCNTs promoted the differentiation of methanogen structure, resulting in increase of Methanomassiliicoccus, Methanoculleus, and the uncultured WCHA1–57. These results indicated that MWCNTs impacted the performance of UASB reactor and the structures of the microbial community in anaerobic granular sludge.

Abstract:The performance, microbial community and enzymatic activity of sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were evaluated under long-term exposure of 0, 10 and 30 mg/L carboxyl functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH). The presence of 10 mg/L MWCNTs-COOH displayed no adverse impacts on the COD and NH4+-N removal of SBR, whereas 30 mg/L MWCNTs-COOH declined the COD and NH4+-N removal. MWCNTs-COOH inhibited the denitrifying process and led to the accumulation of effluent NO2--N concentration. The inhibition of MWCNTs-COOH on the oxygen utilization rate, nitrogen removal rate and enzymatic activity of activated sludge gradually enhanced with the increase of operating time and influent MWCNTs-COOH concentration. MWCNTs-COOH stimulated more reactive oxygen species production and lactate dehydrogenase release, which might affect the microbial physiological functions and morphology. The microbial diversity and richness was declined evidently after long-term exposure of MWCNTs-COOH. The relative abundance of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria showed some changes under MWCNTs-COOH stress.
Effects of CeO2 Nanoparticles on Bacterial Community and Molecular Ecological Network in Activated Sludge System.

Abstract:The increasing use of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) has caused concerns regarding their potential environmental risks. However, their effects on bacterial communities and network interactions in activated sludge process are still unclear. In this study, we carried out long-term exposure experiments (210 d) to investigate the influence of CeO2 NPs on wastewater treatment performance, bacterial community structure and network interactions in activated sludge systems. The results showed that long-term exposure to 1 mg/L CeO2 NPs induced the deterioration of denitrifying process, which was consistent with the inhibition of enzyme activities of nitrite oxidoreductase and nitrate reductase under CeO2 NPs. CeO2 NPs decreased the bacterial diversity and altered the overall bacterial community structure in activated sludge. Some dominant denitrifying bacteria, such as Flexibacter and Acinetobacter decreased significantly. Molecular ecological network analysis showed that CeO2 NPs decreased the network complexity of bacterial community, and probably promoted the competition in bacterial communities of activated sludge. These changes of denitrifying bacteria and the bacterial network may be relevant to the deterioration of denitrifying process. This study provides insights into how the bacteria community and their molecular ecological network respond to CeO2 NPs in activated sludge systems.

Abstract:The wide utilization of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in many products could cause their release into wastewater treatment plants. Although the potential effects of ZnO NPs on synthetic wastewater treatment have been studied, reports concerning their impacts on biological nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) removal from real wastewater are sparse, and the related mechanisms of these effects are still unclear. In this study, the influences of ZnO NPs on nitrogen and phosphorus removal from real municipal wastewater were investigated, and the results were compared with those using synthetic wastewater. The data showed that 50 mg/L ZnO NPs did not affect the settleability and membrane integrity of activated sludge fed with real or synthetic wastewater. Although the deterioration of N and P removal from both wastewaters was observed, the ZnO NPs-induced inhibition to real wastewater treatment was smaller than that to synthetic wastewater treatment (36% versus 100% inhibition to phosphorus removal). Fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) analysis showed that the real wastewater contained higher dissolved organic matters such as humic substances than the synthetic one. The presence of dissolved organic matter decreased the dissolution of ZnO NPs, which could lower the ZnO NPs-induced negative effects on biological N and P removal from real wastewater. Further experiments revealed that ZnO center dot NPs showed smaller inhibition to the catalytic activities of nitrate reductase, exopolyphosphatase, and polyphosphate kinase of activated sludge cultured by real wastewater, which was another reason for the lower influence of ZnO NPs on biological N and P removal from real wastewater.

Abstract:The application of modified carbon nanotubes (MCNTs) in the field of wastewater treatment has received much attention in recent years. To better understand the research progress and trends of MCNTs in wastewater treatment, this paper presents a bibliometric analysis of the scientific literature on the application of MCNTs in wastewater, highlight how it has evolved over the years, and identify the sectors for which the study could be beneficial. The CiteSpace software was used to perform the analysis of the data in which specific maps were used to represent the network of the relationships among countries, journals, organizations, authors, and keywords related to the investigated topic and subtopics. The results show that in the time frame of the study, most attention has been focused on the functional modification of carbon nanotubes, the study of their application in water treatment, and the study of the patterns and mechanisms of pollutant removal. The recycling of MCNTs and their environmental risks have not been sufficiently studied. In conclusion, the recycling and regeneration methods of MCNTs, as well as the potential ecological, environmental and health risks will be the focus of future research and more research should be invested.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been widely used in many fields, which raised concerns about potential threats to biological sewage treatment systems. In this study, the phosphorus removal performance, enzymatic activity and microbial population dynamics in constructed wetlands (CWs) were evaluated under a long-term exposure to AgNPs (0, 50, and 200 μg/L) for 450 days. Results have shown that AgNPs inhibited the phosphorus removal efficiency in a short-term exposure, whereas caused no obviously negative effects from a long-term perspective. Moreover, in the coexisting CW system of AgNPs and phosphorus, competition exhibited in the initial exposure phase, however, cooperation between them was observed in later phase. Enzymatic activity of acid-phosphatase at the moderate temperature (10–20°C) was visibly higher than that at the high temperature (20–30°C) and CWs with AgNPs addition had no appreciable differences compared with the control. High-throughput sequencing results indicated that the microbial richness, diversity and composition of CWs were distinctly affected with the extension of exposure time at different AgNPs levels. However, the phosphorus removal performance of CWs did not decline with the decrease of polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs), which also confirmed that adsorption precipitation was the main way of phosphorus removal in CWs. The study suggested that AgNPs and phosphorus could be removed synergistically in the coexistence system. This work has some reference for evaluating the influences of AgNPs on the phosphorus removal and the interrelation between them in CWs.

Abstract:With a conceptual shift in sewage treatment from ‘waste pollution’ to ‘vehicle of resource and energy recovery’ and the further intensification of the energy crisis, the separation and recovery of carbon resources from discharged sewage has gained increasing recent attention in the field of water treatment. The ultra-short Solids Retention Time (SRT) activated sludge process (SRT ≤ 4 d) is highly efficient for separating organic matter and improving the energy recovery rate in wastewater treatment plants, but the effluent quality is relatively poor. If organics in the ultra-short SRT effluent can be reduced further to separate and recover carbon resources, the process may soon replace the traditional activated sludge process. We conducted physical adsorption carbon recovery experiments in an ultra-short SRT (SRT = 2 d) activated sludge system using three carbon nanotubes. Considering that Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) arises from a mixture of organic compounds, and because humic acid (HA) makes up a large fraction of the effluent and can cause great environmental harm, further experiments were conducted on the adsorption of HA in the effluent COD to three nanotubes. This study proposes a novel method to completely remove organics from the effluent from ultra-short SRT activated sludge processes and reveals nanotube adsorption properties and mechanisms.
Effects of Carbon Nanotubes on Atrazine Biodegradation by Arthrobacter Sp.

Abstract:The environmental risks of engineered nanoparticles have attracted attention. However, little is known regarding the effects of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the biodegradation and persistence of organic contaminants in water. We investigated the impacts of pristine and oxidized multiwalled CNTs on the atrazine biodegradation rate and efficiency using Arthrobacter sp. At a concentration of 25mg/L, the CNTs enhanced the biodegradation rate by up to 20%; however, at a concentration of 100mg/L, the CNTs decreased the biodegradation rate by up to 50%. The stimulation effects resulted from enhanced bacterial growth and the overexpression of degradation genes. The inhibitory effects resulted from the toxicity of the CNTs at high concentrations. The differences between the two CNTs at tested concentrations were not significant. The biodegradation efficiency was not impacted by adsorption, and the pre-adsorbed atrazine on the CNTs was fully biodegraded when the CNT concentration was ≤25mg/L. This finding was consistent with the lack of observable desorption hysteresis for atrazine on the tested CNTs. Our results indicate that CNTs can enhance or inhibit biodegradation through a balance of two effects: the toxic effects on microbial activity and the effects of the changing bioavailability that result from adsorption and desorption.
Response of Anaerobic Granular Sludge to Single-Wall Carbon Nanotube Exposure

Abstract:Rapid development and application of nanotechnology have introduced various nanopaticles, such as single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), whose negative effects on aquatic organisms and cultured cells have been reported, into anaerobic wastewater treatment systems. In this study, the response of methanogenic sludge exposed to SWCNTs in anaerobic digestion process was investigated. Results show that SWCNTs, at a concentration up to 1000 mg/L, had no significant impact on the maximum methane yield. In contrast, they induced much faster substrate utilization and methane production rates. Scanning electron microscopy examination shows that more extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were excreted from the anaerobic sludge and closely interacted with SWCNTs. Such an interaction prevented nanoparticles from piercing into cells, and thus reduced their cytotoxicity. In the compact anaerobic granule structure, SWCNTs exposure enhanced the electrical conductance of the sludge, which might promote direct interspecies electron transfer among anaerobic fermentative bacteria and methanogens in the anaerobic digestion process. Our results provide useful information to understand the response of anaerobic microorganisms to CNTs in complex environmental matrix.
Effects of Zno Nanoparticles on Wastewater Biological Nitrogen and Phosphorus Removal

Abstract:With the increasing utilization of nanomaterials, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) have been reported to induce adverse effects on human health and aquatic organisms. However, the potential impacts of ZnO NPs on wastewater nitrogen and phosphorus removal with an activated sludge process are unknown. In this paper, short-term exposure experiments were conducted to determine whether ZnO NPs caused adverse impacts on biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal in the unacclimated anaerobic-low dissolved oxygen sequencing batch reactor. Compared with the absence of ZnO NPs, the presence of 10 and 50 mg/L of ZnO NPs decreased total nitrogen removal efficiencies from 81.5% to 75.6% and 70.8%, respectively. The corresponding effluent phosphorus concentrations increased from nondetectable to 10.3 and 16.5 mg/l respectively, which were higher than the influent phosphorus (9.8 mg/L), suggesting that higher concentration of ZnO NPs induced the loss of normal phosphorus removal. It was found that the inhibition of nitrogen and phosphorus removal induced by higher concentrations of ZnO NPs was due to the release of zinc ions from ZnO NPs dissolution and increase of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, which caused inhibitory effect on polyphosphate-accumulating organisms and decreased nitrate reductase, exopolyphosphatase, and polyphosphate kinase activities.
