Abstract:The 20th century was characterized by a radical modernization not only about the built environment but also about society, particularly about women’s conditions. The article proposes the “graphic re-interpretation” of one of the most significant Charlotte Perriand’s projects remained on paper in response to the social problems arising in the early 30’s with the establishment of the Popular Front’s new socialist government. It regards the project known as “Maison du week-end”, designed in 1934 for the competition organized by the journal “L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui”. In particular, in her project of private holiday house, the small temporary house turns into a manifesto of the new architectural culture and into an experimentation field through which Perriand investigates a theme common to her whole work: the definition of interior spaces as mover of a new way of living. Starting from this definition, Perriand offers a new point of view on the minimum living space for leisure and a radical architectural interpretation of the French industrial modernity. The graphic reading of this never realized project gives us a valuable demonstration of one of the most emblematic figure in the history of modern architecture through which the drawing interprets forms and spatial reasons.

Abstract:"Passionate about skiing and alpinism, the architect and designer Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) developed numerous projects for loisirs and the mountain landscape over the course of her career. Her major projects in the years 1960 to 1980, such as her chalet in Méribel and the ski resorts of Les Arcs 1600 and 1800, owe their foundations to the research that she carried out in the 1930s. The designs of this pioneer illustrate a way of living in harmony with nature and demonstrate how advanced her thinking was. Recognized as remarkable contemporary architecture, her designs remain extremely comfortable to live in today."

Abstract:This stunning book presents Charlotte Perriand's photographic achievement in its entirety, offering new and valuable insights into the work of this important designer. Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) was one of the most innovative furniture and interior designers of the twentieth century, long renowned for the tubular-steel chairs she created with le Corbusier. Her career spanned nearly seventy-five years and included work in her native France as well as in Africa, South America, Asia, and Europe, and today her designs are highly collectable. Recently, several hundred photographic negatives were uncovered in her archives, revealing for the first time the scope of her work as a photographer. In the late 1920s, French interior and furniture designer Charlotte Perriand was at the cusp of her career, just beginning her work as an architect, designer, town planner, and political militant. Starting in 1927, she turned to photography, which was to play a pivotal role in her development as a designer through the pioneering years of the modern movement. Her photographic venture ended in Japan in 1941, when the hope of a better world was shattered by World War II. For Charlotte Perriand, photography was a machine for thinking, taking notes, and stirring emotions, but it was also an instrument of political engagement. Today, her photographs are a revelation, offering unseen glimpses into her creative process and intellectual development. Her photographs express the important themes and questions explored by modern artists of the day, and are part of the vast stream of avant-garde movements in which painters, architects, and photographers - and sometimes all three combined - worked together in a common spirit.

Abstract:This paper aims to clarify the transformation of the concept of 'decoration' in Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) by analyzing her discourses as a primary source. The chronological reorganization of Perriand's discourse and the extraction of its themes reveal two major occasions: the collaboration with Le Corbusier at his atelier in the 1920s and 1930s and her stay in Japan in the early 1940s. Through this opportunity, the scope of Perriand's question of "decoration" extends from "standard" to "vacuum" space, starting with furniture and ending with the environment that surrounds architecture.

Abstract:This paper aims to clarify the trajectory of the exploration of folk objects by the 20th century French architect and decorator Charlotte Perriand, and to identify the evolution of the subject found in her work. In Perriand’s case, from the 1930s to the 1960s, she studied farmhouses in the West and in Japan to study the scales and gestures of human space. What Perriand found there was not something universal, but rather the very possibility of a variety of gestures. In particular, her theme of mountain dwellings was a representative of this research.

Abstract:This paper analyses the graphics of Charlotte Perriand, going from a more technical vision, as in the methodological, right through to the most phenomenological, in the search for a suitable representation for the modern way of living. Both approaches contribute to the final academic learning process with abstract systems that are strictly taken on in order to be able to forsee space and objects in three dimensions. The path from the natural language in her first notes, through to the graphic, more abstract language, demonstrates the level of specificity used by means of different graphic sources. The knowledge of methods used for portrayal sought a continuous experimentation from the very origin of the creative process; the drawing, and this meant that this was part of the crystallisation of the architectural thinking. The complementarity of graphic mechanisms such as the Diedric system, axonometric projections, conical perspectives and even the dappling in the technique of photomontage shows her desire to express not only the detail but also the ‘pathos’ of new architecture. The critical analysis of her graphic collection will demonstrate what the work of this pioneer of modernity meant and how it drove forward the general aim of those who wished to give architecture and furniture a life of emancipation.

Abstract:This paper aims to clarify the process of the formation of Perriand's concept of “form” toward the “forme utile (useful form),” by tracing her production of furniture chronologically. In other words, by analyzing the intersection of the “Mingei (folk‐craft)” tradition experienced in Japan and the Western modernism of “forme utile,” this paper examines how the “new decoration” of steel pipe furniture as “form” led to her particular “decoration” of interior spaces. In Perriand's concept of “form,” touching the material itself was the primary issue. However, it was also synonymous with the main intent of the leader of Mingei movement Muneyoshi Yanagi, criticized her “forme libre (free form).” Furthermore, Perriand, who referred the aesthetician Kakuzo Okakura's “vacuum,” came to understand “form” as the correlation between human beings and the space that surrounds them.

Abstract:Abstract This paper aims to clarify the influence of “Mingei (Folk Crafts)” on the creative theories of French architect and interior designer Charlotte Perriand (1903–1999) and reconsider an aspect of modern architecture. First, in Section 2, this paper examines Perriand’s articles before her encounter with “Folk Crafts”. Section 3 traces her experience of “Folk Crafts” during her time in Japan, and finally, Sections 4 and 5 compare the thoughts of Yanagi and Perriand. Perriand integrated the ideas of Yanagi’s “Folk Crafts” from her interest in vernacular buildings, and this matured into a spatial theory of the “contact”. This hand‐based “contact” was not a rejection of machine‐driven civilization; rather it had the characteristic of universality as far as the sense of touch was based on the human physiological sense.

Abstract:Self-esteem, individual accomplishment, instant response to social difficulties, and the rejection of alienating uniformity are some of the ideals that the hypermodern era claims as its own. Under that order of expansionist and excessive renewal, various fields of knowledge undergo an extraordinary mutation. The novels whose analysis falls to the current study appropriate that new order and enrich it in their own way by textualizing human societies or creating others from scratch in which voice is given to active female characters, who successfully disregard the old norms by inventing others, which trace the furrows of a paritary or egalitarian relationship, and which contributes, at the same time, to their economic independence and socio-cultural advancement. For example, Paule Marshall and Léonora’s imaginations are a crucible of extratextual and original values anchored in a plural leadership whose prevailing and common trend remains feminist. Considering the characteristics of that tendency, a number of convergent and divergent points whose aesthetic scope seems to have not hitherto been much studied, emerge. For this purpose, it is essential to elucidate it from a comparative perspective. But, to achieve this, it is appropriate to use the operational properties of hypermodernity in order to examine two "points-valeurs", inter alia, the construction of hypermodern characters’ identity, the reversals of hypermodernity and its "effet-idéologie".

Abstract:The construction of the new architectural culture and the balance between technology and emotion in the designing process, is studied by analysing Jean Nouvel' s works from the following three aspects: technologic beauty, environment and symbolization. Nouvel' s architectures showed not only the time spirit of high - tech, but also the historical continuity of nation' s culture. Nouvel made the logical modern technology poetical, while his buildings revealed the elegant and logical architectural form. He created the places for people to live and communicate. The unique characteristics of his works were showed off by the charm, size and style of the buildings and their environments. Architects will find out the meeting point of science and art. Meanwhile they will create architectures with time spirits, technologic feature and culture trait.

Though some German and French romantic authors have already anticipated it in some of its aspects, modernite, in the poetic fi eld, has as one of its major representative the poet well known as “the father of modernity”: Charles Baudelaire. This paper is a study about Baudelaire’s relationship with the concept of the aesthetic of modernity and its paradoxes that are always present in his poetic as well as in his critical work. Abstract:Since the 1970s,Marjorie Perloff,has been regarded as a guardian figure by contemporary American poets for her defense of contemporary American poetry. Through her work and insightful criticism,she acts as a guide in the development of contemporary poetry writing.In particular,she is regarded as a respected forerunner in expositing and theorizing the avant-garde in poetry.Without the succession of critical books and articles on avant-garde poetry that Perloff has produced,it is hard to imagine the academic success of avant-garde poetry in the United States.Her Radical Artifice;Writing Poetry in the Age of Media,is a must-read for all literary scholars.Her profound observation, critical perspective and commitment to modern and contemporary literature are the determining factors of this book's enduring academic appeal.Although 20 years have passed since the book's publication,it still speaks to the tunes of our time and provides fruitful research directions for contemporary literary studies.As a humanity classic,it will continue to make an impact upon academia,to say the least,even in 20 years to come.

Abstract:This paper aims to clarify Charlotte Perriand's (1903–1999) formation of the notion of the "vacuum" through a reading of The Book of Tea written by Kakuzo Okakura in 1906, using the French version of The Book of Tea, which Perriand possessed, and her articles that quoted this book. It is certain that her multifaceted and ethnological interests in other cultures allowed her to accept the unfamiliar notion of the "vacuum". However, Perriand's interpretation of the "vacuum" was characteristic. Her main interest concerning Okakura's notion of the "vacuum" was the question of the human "gesture", and she developed this through her direct experience of Japan. The metaphysics of the "vacuum" as before "space", as defined by Okakura, was examined by Perriand using the question of the possibility of the unknown "gesture" in a physical "space".

Abstract:Three essential elements of modernism consolidated through war: a centralised welfare state, a serial industrial apparatus and, often, a territorial tabula rasa. Hence, for many modernist architects and urban planners, post-war Europe became the ideal ground to put their ideas to the test. However, there is a genuine discrepancy between the proposals of the first four Congrès Internationaux d’Architecture Moderne (CIAM) and what was massively implemented throughout Europe after 1945. To explore this divergence, Brussels proves to be an interesting case study for two main reasons. First, it hosted the third CIAM in November 1930, where Victor Bourgeois presented his views on housing and cities, in line with the ideals of the time. Second, after the war, Belgium, like many Western countries, experienced a period of euphoria, during which the modernist ideology attained a sudden and broad consensus. In the capital over the following three decades new infrastructure was built, as well as housing developments that derived, at least formally, from the CIAM ideals. This article explores the gap between the ideals and the reality of modernism through a comparison on two scales: the city and housing. Bourgeois’s Grand and Nouveau Bruxelles proposals are compared to the Manhattan Plan and Etrimo’s housing developments. Understanding the gap between the ideals of modernism and its implementation may help identify characteristics of the modernist movement but also, as Lacaton-Vassal pointed out when citing Habermas, complete the “unfinished project” (Habermas, 1984) of modernism.

Abstract:A recurring motif in the urban literature that was formed around Haussmannian Paris, the Seine with its waters, its banks, the railway activities that cross it, builds its own myth around an artistic and poetic destiny. Devalued by the writers and poets of the 19th century, it experienced its golden age at the turn of the century thanks to the enthusiasm shown by the Impressionists for aquatic and river landscapes. We have to wait for the Belle Epoque and its euphoria, the fresh look of a foreign diaspora, as well as a poetic revolution that decentralizes the subject and focuses on the spaces where it evolves, to rehabilitate the Seine and make it a modern myth.

Abstract:This book explores an idea of music, exemplified by the work of Debussy, in dialogue with a parallel movement in French literary and philosophical thought. Its central thesis is that modern music and philosophy converge on the same set of problems but from opposite directions. Through close readings of selected musical works it argues that Debussy’s rethinking of the relation between sound and grammar anticipates and complements the defining problem of modern philosophy – the gap between language and a sensory relation to the world, between abstract systems of signification and embodied experience. Although its principal focus is the music of Debussy, it ranges widely across French music from Fauré and Ravel to Dutilleux, Boulez, Grisey, Murail, and Saariaho. It ranges similarly through a set of French writers and philosophers, from Mallarmé and Proust to Merleau-Ponty, Jankélévitch, Derrida, Lyotard, and Nancy. Frequent reference is made to the visual arts (Rodin, Monet, Bonnard, Cezanne, Matisse). It explores the idea that this current of French music, running through the long twentieth century from Debussy to the present, makes sense in a manner that affords a different way of knowing the world, foregrounding sound over syntax, and sense over signification.

Abstract:Mid-Century Modern is a style of architecture, product, interior, and graphic design that reflects 20th century developments in modern design. Mid Century Modern style is a combination of many styles and materials, one of which is retro style wrapped with the simplicity of Scandinavian style. Several Scandinavian design elements were applied to the Mid-Century Modern design by displaying clean lines, the use of wood, soft and minimalist organic curves. One of the popular design styles in the Mid-Century Modern era is the Biomorphic form which has a characteristic of curved shape, smooth surface, asymmetrical shape and is oriented towards natural objects and their environment. One of the iconic mid-century design is the La Chaise chair by Charles and Ray Eames, its biomorphic shape inspired by Gaston Lachaise's 'The Floating Figure' sculpture. Through analysis of politic, economy, social and technology and the work of figures in the Mid-Century Modern era, we were able to identify the key concepts, design elements and visual characters of this era, which were then used to determine the concept and design style’s visual character for the brand concept and product collection of Móta Studio.
