Abstract:Beppe Fenoglio’s most famous novel, Partigiano Johnny, is not actually a novel at all, but a posthumous philological reconstruction of a series of typescripts that inspired one of the fiercest Italian literary debates of the postwar period. This debate reached a fever pitch in the 1990s as Italy was coming to terms with the impact of the Resistenza on national identity. As a partisan-writer with no connections to fascism, Fenoglio long occupied a stabilizing role in the Italian literary canon, intensifying the stakes for academics who wished to “heal” the wounds of his fragmented text and use them to produce a coherent, redemptive Resistance narrative, with Johnny- Fenoglio serving as a contemporary Dante. However, the incomplete, incompatible typescripts structurally refute the dominant postwar rhetoric that depicts the armistice as a “radical rupture” in Italian history, a “year zero” that catalyzed Italy’s rebirth. With no clear beginning or end, the texts enact a structural resistance that is echoed thematically in the partisan-protagonist’s metatextual reflections on the difficulty of narrating the Resistenza after the war has ended, which he theorizes in Dantean terms. Reading these thematic and structural resistances, this essay argues that they suggest that the “incomplete” archive is not treatable. Rather than opposing the philological debate or taking sides, I consider how this unstable text and the surrounding efforts to reconstruct it, collectively testify to the trauma of writing and remembering the Resistenza.

Abstract:This essay discusses the representation of the city of Florence in Vanni Santoni's Se fossi fuoco, arderei Firenze. Reflecting on the peculiar dynamics and interactions between this urban space and its citizens, the essay argues that the novel displays an ambiguous attitude toward Florence's problematic and contradictory beauty. In particular, the essay provides a reading of Se fossi fuoco in the light of some of Vincenzo Binetti's observations in his Città nomadi: esodo e autonomia nella metropoli contemporanea. Ultimately, despite its prevalent atmosphere of disillusionment and disenchantment, Santoni's representation of the city of Florence in Se fossi fuoco does not entirely exclude the possibility of different forms of inhabitation and processes of deterritorialization, which are potentially similar to those Binetti analyzes in his work.

Abstract:Using unpublished archival material, this article analyses the reception of Virginia Woolf in the Milanese feminist context of the late 1970s, attempting to understand the role Woolf's work played in the theoretical development of the feminism of difference in Italy. The study focuses on two key texts: the Italian publication of Three Guineas by the feminist press La Tartaruga; and the Catalogo giallo, the second publication of the Milan-based Libreria delle donne, which played a vital role in the evolution of the feminism of difference.

Abstract:This article reads the work of Cesare Pavese in light of the critical challenges of transnational Italian studies and analyzes Pavese's aesthetics of rootedness, representations of migration, and practices of translation as sites of tension between local and global geographic scales. Accepting Carlo Bernari's provocative suggestion that we consider Pavese a "Southern" writer, the article traces how Pavese portrays the land, sea, and ocean within a geophilosophical " sistema di rapporti " (Furio Jesi) reminiscent of a Heideggerian "fourfold." In Pavese, an "anti-oceanic" attitude goes hand in hand with his treatment of land and sea as two opposite mythical realms, which we see expressed in his translation of Herman Melville's "oceanic" novel Moby-Dick . Similarly, Pavese's dystopian accounts of emigration can be seen as anti-oceanic narratives that articulate the need to return. With his telluric symbolism and his notion of an indissoluble attachment to the land, Pavese's aesthetics participates in the culture of ius sanguinis that, over seventy years after Pavese's death, is still a remarkable feature of Italian society, as we see in contemporary debates on the 1992 Italian citizenship law.

Abstract:Taking in consideration, alongside Cheryll Glotfelty, that “ecocriticism seeks to evaluate text ideas in terms of their coherence and usefulness in the responses to environmental crisis” (Glotfelty and Fromm 1996, p. 5), and that crisis refers not only to the ecology of the environment but also to that of social relations and the psyche, as proposed by Félix Guattari (1990), understanding that there is a lack of equilibrium among the three registries that provoke the crisis lived by the contemporary individual, in a broad spectrum, this work intends to understand how the character Marcovaldo, from Italo Calvino’s Marcovaldo, or The Seasons in the City (1963), articulates modes of being, dwelling and surviving in a great metropolis, through the adoption of postures coherent with what we would call, later, ecosophy. In addition to the two aforementioned theorists, the ideas of Garrard (2006) and Serres (1991) will be used. Also, we intend to show how much the stories in the collection hold great potential for ecocritical reading and, therefore, for a response to the level of awareness about the ecological crisis.

Abstract:Urban Studies, Ahead of Print. Recent research has highlighted the connection between commoning processes and the creation of new infrastructures of care in the areas of Southern Europe which were most affected by austerity policies and by the connected crisis of social reproduction. The objective of this paper is to shed new light on the caring practices organised through and within urban commons by using the theoretical lenses provided by Subaltern Studies, which also explored processes of collective self-organisation, the development of solidarity ties and reclamation of social welfare. The main theoretical reference is provided by the work of Partha Chatterjee on 'The politics of the governed'. The discussion is conducted through the analysis of the caring practices organised within the Scugnizzo Liberato, one of the urban commons of the city of Naples, located in Southern Italy, investigated through a prolonged process of co-research.

Abstract:James Wood, in a 2013 article in the New Yorker, called Elena Ferrante “one of Italy’s best-known least-known contemporary writers.” Meghan O’Rourke, in 2014 in The Guardian, similarly referred to her as “the global literary sensation nobody knows.” These comments refer to both the excitement that her works have generated among her reading public and to the reclusiveness she cultivates by hiding her identity behind a pseudonym and assiduously avoiding the public eye. It was Wood’s description of Ferrante’s “remarkable, lucid, austerely honest novels” that led me to read L’amica geniale (2011) and to seek out as well her earlier works. Soon I too was hooked. Abstract:The study entitled "Candido's List" (La Lista di Candido) is not the work of the three authors alone. A good part of the community is entitled to feel itself coauthor, each for his/her own part, of a research project that has succeeded in blending a variety of different ingredients: history, entrepreneurship, the industrialization of the Trento Province with all its high and low points, personal life stories, medicine, genius, work, women's emancipation, the past but also the present and future. The research comprises an eloquent collection of memories and a variety of iconographic materials; it has now become a book and a travelling exhibition containing the accounts of the people who worked at the Collotta-Cis factory in Molina di Ledro. It starts with the brilliance of Pier Antonio Cassoni, who in 1816 deposited the first patent in the world for the extraction of magnesium carbonate, and closes with the decontamination of the factory site in the late 1980s. A needful section has been set aside for the painful facts relating to the processing of asbestos fibre; a final space, midway between an artistic reading and an interpretation for the future, has seen the involvement of the Circolo Fotoamatori di Ledro, with a photographic itinerary enabling the reader to "virtually' enter the remaining worksites and listen to these spaces "tell" their stories after years of silence. A story in black and white, where the two tones are also messages for reading a complex story, one that it is important to remember.

Abstract:This article identifies a set of precarious, temporary, and travelling forms of commemoration that have been expressed in recent public artworks connected to Italy, and proposes them as case studies that together can enhance our understanding of how transnational memory is formed and functions across borders. These complex processes of memory-making are illustrated through a comparative analysis of Wes Anderson's Bar Luce (2015), Thomas Hirschhorn's Gramsci Monument (2013), and Muna Mussie's Oblio (2021). The selected works, which together add transnational nuance to James E. Young's concept of the 'counter-monument', enshrine the creativity which can reside in acts of forgetting and misremembering, in experiencing things second-hand or at a distance, and in re-materialising memory through tropes of ephemerality, portability, and dislocation.

Abstract:This special issue introduces for the first time to the predominantly Anglophone arena of Comics Studies a strand of the globalising comics culture of the 21 st century, namely the transnational Italian comics scene. Our aim has been to highlight the mobility and the multilingualism of Italian comics culture as well as the avenues of research evident in this emerging field. Two elements have been key in such an endeavour: a transnational perspective that embraces the mobility of Italian (comics) culture across geographical and linguistic borders (Burdett, Havely and Polezzi Citation 2020; Spadaro Citation 2022 ) and the engagement of contributors from different academic backgrounds related to Comics and Italian Studies. In this framework, memory and migration have emerged as powerful narrative themes in comics production and simultaneously as avenues of research in Comics Studies. This introduction outlines the rationale of the project and points towards further directions within the emerging field of Transnational Italian Comics Studies.
Mediaspaces, urban events and mobile experience: an ethnographic enquiry into the social production of the city of design

Abstract:The aim of the thesis has been to analyze the so-called phenomenon of Fuorisalone through a double disciplinary perspective: on the one hand that of the mobilities paradigm (Sheller-Urry, 2006), on the other hand through the Lefebvrean perspective on the production of social space (1974) and its most recent applications in the field of media geography (Jansson, 2007) and urban events (Lehtovouri, 2010). The first part is dedicated to the reconstruction of the social history of this event by identifying the pivotal subjects for its birth, the dynamics of interdependency between them and the forms of their rootedness in the territorial and socio-cultural context of the city of Milan and its design culture. The second part adopts a synchronous perspective: on the one hand the analysis of the production of the social spaces of design, with particular attention to the single design districts involved, that during this event characterize the urban space as a “diffused heterotopia” (Foucault, 1967). On the other hand on the consumption forms of this event, by presenting the results of the field work conducted in three design districts during the 2011 and 2012 editions. Through the triangulation of different ethnographical methods, the research has focused on the mobility and mediated practices, on the perceptions and experiences of visitors, reading the specificity of this event through the circularity between the productive dimensions and its mobile and mediated forms of consumption.

Abstract:ABSTRACT This article brings together perspectives from world literature and translation studies to compare the international reception of two ‘glocal’ literary cases: Andrea Camilleri’s Montalbano books, and Elena Ferrante’s tetralogy L’amica geniale. The national and international success of these series raises important questions for scholars of translation studies, multilingualism, world literature and literary markets, and sheds light on the significance of different kinds of multilingualism in fiction and of their treatment in translation. The article addresses the following questions: how do monolingual book markets contain and discipline multilingual fiction? What happens when multilingual fiction travels through translation? How do we explain the present openness of the Anglo-American market to translated fiction with an emphasis on the vernacular? The author argues that while both Camilleri and Ferrante foreground cultural difference and linguistic incommensurability, the way in which they portray the experience of diglossia had an important impact in determining their national and international success as well as the route through which they achieved international visibility.

Abstract:Throughout his life, Nagai Kafū (1879–1959) tackled crucial issues of modernity, such as the urban experience and conflicting notions of selfhood. This article explores some aspects of his narrative practice that enrich our understanding of his literary output while suggesting new avenues for future research on space-time representation in twentieth-century literature. I focus on passive senses such as hearing and smell, and on material objects and physical sensations as narrative devices employed by the author in order to broaden comprehension and enrich the experience of objective reality. In particular, I examine Yukidoke (Melting Snow), a 1922 short story understudied thus far but that offers useful insights as regards the author’s intent to defy superimposed notions of affect and space.

Abstract:Este artigo pretende apresentar criticamente o livro O Deus das Moscas tem fome, evidenciando seu aspecto inovador no que concerne à literatura de gênero portuguesa, e, ao mesmo tempo, analisando suas interessantes experimentações formais e estilísticas. Romance fix up do português Luís Corte Real, conhecido por ter fundado a editora Saída de Emergência, uma das maiores e mais respeitadas casas lusitanas, que se dedica particularmente à publicação de obras de fantasia, ficção científica e horror, nacionais e internacionais, O Deus das Moscas tem Fome é composto de seis narrativas, de tamanhos variados, sendo uma delas de autoria da autora convidada Anabela Natário. Juntas, compõem um retrato do cotidiano do “Detetive do Oculto”, Benjamin Tormenta, cujo passado, presente e futuro o leitor desvela pouco a pouco à medida que o protagonista desvenda seus casos, aos moldes de Sherlock Holmes e Hercule Poirot, em uma Lisboa oitocentista alternativa marcada pelo sobrenatural. Evidencia-se, portanto, a marca de diversos gêneros particularmente anglófonos, como a fantasia (em suas múltiplas facetas, em particular os subgêneros conhecidos como fantasia urbana e histórica), policial, horror, dentre outras categorias, que revelam o manancial de referências de um autor que explora, a um só tempo, as culturas erudita, pop e popular, algo ainda raro no tão tradicional mercado editorial português. Ao mesmo tempo, espera-se com este artigo evidenciar a experimentação linguística, como se disse, mas também a reconstrução de uma ambientação histórica, que remonta ao século XIX português, em uma homenagem declarada a Eça de Queiroz.
“There is no ‘us and them’”: Engaging with Migration and Border Crossing Narratives through Shadow Puppetry in Ghosts of the River

Abstract:This paper explores the representation of border crossing and other migration experiences in the shadow play Ghosts of the River, written by Octavio Solís and performed by the ShadowLight Company. The devices employed to engage spectators with the reality of migrants in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas are analysed in order to bring out the play's potential to raise awareness of social (in)justice and human rights in the context of the current migratory crisis. Solís's accounts of his own purposes and composition process are considered, with particular reference to the need to erase the "us" versus "them" divide that tears people apart. The study is underpinned by theories of othering pertaining to the construction of the migrant as alien other or stranger, as articulated by several key scholars. Likewise, spectral criticism informs the interpretation of the characters' ghostly nature. In this regard, theories deriving from Derrida's hauntology elaborate on the use of the ghost trope in fictional texts, particularly in those texts pertaining to minority cultural discourses, in which the ghost embodies the oppressed other reappearing as a haunting figure that questions the established order. As is shown, this is the case with the play's ghost figures, caught in the liminal space of the river as haunting presences endowed with a voice that enables them to articulate their narratives and reenact once and again their ordeals as migrant crossers.
Thinking night studies through a southern European perspective

Abstract:To emphasise the contribution of situated perspectives to the advancement of the field, this review provides a genealogy of night studies across southwestern Europe. This interdisciplinary field of research has significantly developed in English‐speaking scholarly communities, and it has only more recently been growing in importance on southwestern European scholars' research agendas. Usually, they produce research outputs in both English and a Romance language. As a result, intertwined lines of scholarly literature emerge and contribute to the advancement of night studies to different degrees, depending on international readers' proficiency in the employed (Romance) language and (inter)disciplinary interests. To help handle this accessibility issue, this review focuses on what brings night studies together, despite their heterogeneity. That is, the geographical understanding of local night space–times as situated phenomena frequently referred to as nightscape. Accordingly, the review suggests reframing the geographical nightscape as a connective concept to bridge the gaps between multilingual and multidisciplinary research, fostering the interpretation and assemblage of hybrid theoretical frameworks for situated investigations that delve into the diverse and interdependent relations co‐producing local night space–times.

Abstract:The article focuses on the international reception of the first season of the TV series L’amica geniale (My Brilliant Friend, 2018-). This Italian media product has been distributed and circulated in numerous countries around the globe as the television adaptation of the first book of Elena Ferrante’s bestselling Neapolitan Novels. Generally, the forms of representation and narration of Italianness in Italian TV series that circulate abroad present two distinctive traits: on the one hand, they feature a globally recognizable image of Italian identity and culture, and on the other hand, they narrate stories that are deeply rooted in Italian local contexts. L’amica geniale places in the middle of this spectrum. The aim of this article is to discuss how the audience of the tv series contributes to defining its identity as a transnational/Italian cultural product by fostering symbolic processes often in tension with each other. L’amica geniale appeals to the foreign public both due to its local features, that is, by presenting elements that can be easily traced back to Italian history and culture, and because it can be inscribed within the broad label of quality tv.
