Suppose that \mathcal{V} is a well-spaced sequence and \delta >0. In this paper, it is proved that for any \varepsilon >0, the number of v \in \mathcal{V} with v \leqslant N for which |\lambda_1 p_1^2 + \lambda_2 p_2^3+ \lambda_3 p_3^4+ \lambda_4 p_4^5 - v| < v^{-\delta} has no solution in prime variables p_1,p_2,p_3,p_4 does not exceed O\big(N^{\frac{359}{378} + 2\delta +\varepsilon}\big). This result constitutes an improvement upon that of Q. W. Mu and Z. P. Gao [12].

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.

Large sum-free sets in finite vector spaces I

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number with $p\equiv 2\pmod{3}$ and let $n\ge 1$ be a dimension. It is known that a sum-free subset of ${\mathbb F}_p^n$ can have at most the size $\frac13(p+1)p^{n-1}$ and that, up to automorphisms of ${\mathbb F}_p^n$, the only extremal example is the `cuboid' $\bigl[\frac{p+1}3, \frac{2p-1}3\bigr]\times {\mathbb F}_p^{n-1}$. For $p\ge 11$ we show that if a sum-free subset of ${\mathbb F}_p^n$ is not contained in such an extremal one, then its size is at most $\frac13(p-2)p^{n-1}$. This bound is optimal and we classify the extremal configurations. The remaining cases $p=2, 5$ are known to behave differently. For $p=3$ the analogous question was solved by Vsevolod Lev, and for $p\equiv 1\pmod{3}$ it is less interesting.

Abstract:We investigate subsets with small sumset in arbitrary abelian groups. For an abelian group $G$ and an $n$-element subset $Y \subseteq G$ we show that if $m \ll s^2/(\log n)^2$, then the number of subsets $A \subseteq Y$ with $|A| = s$ and $|A + A| \leq m$ is at most \[2^{o(s)}\binom{\frac{m+\beta}{2}}{s},\] where $\beta$ is the size of the largest subgroup of $G$ of size at most $\left(1+o(1)\right)m$. This bound is sharp for $\mathbb{Z}$ and many other groups. Our result improves the one of Campos and nearly bridges the remaining gap in a conjecture of Alon, Balogh, Morris, and Samotij. We also explore the behaviour of uniformly chosen random sets $A \subseteq \{1,\ldots,n\}$ with $|A| = s$ and $|A + A| \leq m$. Under the same assumption that $m \ll s^2/(\log n)^2$, we show that with high probability there exists an arithmetic progression $P \subseteq \mathbb{Z}$ of size at most $m/2 + o(m)$ containing all but $o(s)$ elements of $A$. Analogous results are obtained for asymmetric sumsets, improving results by Campos, Coulson, Serra, and Wötzel. The main tool behind our proofs is a graph container theorem combined with a variant of an asymmetric hypergraph container theorem.

On Erdős sums of almost primes

Abstract:In 1935, Erdős proved that the sums $f_k=\sum_n 1/(n\log n)$, over integers $n$ with exactly $k$ prime factors, are bounded by an absolute constant, and in 1993 Zhang proved that $f_k$ is maximized by the prime sum $f_1=\sum_p 1/(p\log p)$. According to a 2013 conjecture of Banks and Martin, the sums $f_k$ are predicted to decrease monotonically in $k$. In this article, we show that the sums restricted to odd integers are indeed monotonically decreasing in $k$, sufficiently large. By contrast, contrary to the conjecture we prove that the sums $f_k$ increase monotonically in $k$, sufficiently large. Our main result gives an asymptotic for $f_k$ which identifies the (negative) secondary term, namely $f_k = 1 - (a+o(1))k^2/2^k$ for an explicit constant $a= 0.0656\cdots$. This is proven by a refined method combining real and complex analysis, whereas the classical results of Sathe and Selberg on products of $k$ primes imply the weaker estimate $f_k=1+O_{\varepsilon}(k^{\varepsilon-1/2})$. We also give an alternate, probability-theoretic argument related to the Dickman distribution. Here the proof reduces to showing a sequence of integrals converges exponentially quickly to $e^{-\gamma}$, which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:Given $A$ a set of $N$ positive integers, an old question in additive combinatorics asks that whether $A$ contains a sum-free subset of size at least $N/3+\omega(N)$ for some increasing unbounded function $\omega$. The question is generally attacked in the literature by considering another conjecture, which asserts that as $N\to\infty$, $\max_{x\in\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}}\sum_{n\in A}({\bf 1}_{(1/3,2/3)}-1/3)(nx)\to\infty$. This conjecture, if true, would also imply that a similar phenomenon occurs for $(2k,4k)$-sum-free sets for every $k\geq1$. In this note, we prove the latter result directly. The new ingredient of our proof is a structural analysis on the host set $A$, which might be of independent interest.

Dense sets of natural numbers with unusually large least common multiples

Abstract:For any constant $C_0>0$, we construct a set $A \subset {\mathbb N}$ such that one has $$ \sum_{n \in A: n \leq x} \frac{1}{n} = \exp\left(\left(\frac{C_0}{2}+o(1)\right) (\log\log x)^{1/2} \log\log\log x \right)$$ and $$ \sum_{n,m \in A: n, m \leq x} \frac{1}{\operatorname{lcm}(n,m)} \ll_{C_0} \left(\sum_{n \in A: n \leq x} \frac{1}{n}\right)^2$$ as $x \to \infty$, with the growth rate given here optimal up to the dependence on $C_0$. This answers in the negative a question of Erdős and Graham, and also clarifies the nature of certain ``mostly coprime'' sets studied by Bergelson and Richter.

Abstract:We prove that if $d \ge 2$ is an integer, $G$ is a finite abelian group, $Z_0$ is a subset of $G$ not contained in any strict coset in $G$, and $E_1,\dots,E_d$ are dense subsets of $G^n$ such that the sumset $E_1+\dots+E_d$ avoids $Z_0^n$ then $E_1, \dots, E_d$ essentially have bounded dimension. Abstract:Let $n$ be a cubefree natural number and $p\geq 5$ be a prime number. Assume that $n$ is not expressible as a sum of the form $x^3+y^3$, where $x,y\in \mathbb{Q}$. In this note, we study the solutions (or lack thereof) to the equation $n=x^3+y^3$, where $x$ and $y$ belong to the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. As an application, consider the case when $n$ is not a sum of rational cubes. Then, we prove that $n$ cannot be a sum of two cubes in certain large families of prime cyclic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider sums of three generalized $m$-gonal numbers whose parameters are restricted to integers with a bounded number of prime divisors. With some restrictions on $m$ modulo $30$, we show that a density one set of integers is represented as such a sum, where the parameters are restricted to have at most 6361 prime factors. Moreover, if the squarefree part of $f_m(n)$ is sufficiently large, then $n$ is represented as such a sum, where $f_m(n)$ is a natural linear function in $n$.

Abstract:We prove near-optimal upper bounds for the odd moments of the distribution of coprime residues in short intervals, confirming a conjecture of Montgomery and Vaughan. As an application we prove near-optimal upper bounds for the average of the refined singular series in the Hardy-Littlewood conjectures concerning the number of prime $k$-tuples for $k$ odd. The main new ingredient is a near-optimal upper bound for the number of solutions to $\sum_{1\leq i\leq k}\frac{a_i}{q_i}\in \mathbb{Z}$ when $k$ is odd, with $(a_i,q_i)=1$ and restrictions on the size of the numerators and denominators, that is of independent interest.
