Expertise from sport management can inform emerging dilemmas facing eSport. Organized eSport events and competitions should remain within sport management. Consumer demand for eSport and the growth of organized video game competitions has generated considerable attention from the sport, event, and entertainment industries. eSport therefore represents a novel and popular area for sport management academics to conduct research, educate students, and service industry. However, despite growth and acceptance by consumers and practitioners, academics debate eSport’s position within the domain of sport management, their debates largely concentrated around the question of whether eSport can be classified as sport. In this article, the authors argue for the inclusion of organized eSport events and competitions within sport management vis-à-vis eSport’s meeting certain defining criteria of sport in general. eSport’s connection to traditional sport and defining characteristics are addressed to support eSport’s role as a sport entertainment product recognized by industry as representing a substantial growth opportunity for sport and related organizations. As eSport continues to evolve, practitioners face managerial challenges that are similar to those in traditional sport, particularly in areas of governance and diversity. Sport management academics should embrace the potential of eSport in order to examine this evolution and provide guidance to industry through education and research.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to add to the conceptual discussion on eSport, analyze the role of eSport within sport management, and suggest avenues for future eSport research. The authors suggest that debates surround the degree to which eSport represents formal sport, and disagreements likely stem from conceptualizations of sport and context. Irrespective of one’s notion of eSport as formal sport, the authors suggest the topic has a place in sport management scholarship and discourse. Such a position is consistent with the broad view of sport adopted by Sport Management Review, the perspective that eSport represents a form of sportification, and the association among eSport and various outcomes, including physical and psychological health, social well-being, sport consumption outcomes, and diversity and inclusion. Finally, the authors conclude that eSport scholarship can advance through the study of its governance, marketing, and management as well as by theorizing about eSport.

Abstract:Sport communication is defined as "a process by which people in sport, in a sport setting, or through a sport endeavor, share symbols as they create meaning through interaction" (Pedersen et al. 2007, p. 196). Over the past two decades, research in sport communication has grown significantly as the size of the sport business industry has risen sharply, from 600 billion in 2019 (Plunkett Research 2019), which resulted in the creation of discipline journals (e.g., International Journal of Sport Communication, Communication & Sport), textbooks (e.g., Strategic Sport Communication, Pedersen et al. 2021), Sport Public Relations (Stoldt, Dittmore, and Branvold, 2012), and theory/review articles (e.g., Abeza, O'Reilly, and Nadeau 2014; Filo, Lock, and Karg 2015; Hambrick 2017, Pedersen 2013; Pedersen et al. 2007).

Abstract:Research question: The paper questions the widespread conceptualisation of sport as industry and business in the research field of sport management. It asks if the field largely neglects sport's special quality and the study of how managing sport organisations has effects on sport and the sporting human.Research methods: The paper briefly reviews the recent debate of the sport management research field in its three leading journals, but despite being empirical in part, it is foremost a position and conceptual paper. To bring sport back to the centre of the research field, it suggests that sport is conceptualised as a unique institution in an inter-institutional system.Results and findings: In light of the massive increase of research papers published in the leading journals over the past decades, debate of where sport management research is going and whom it serves is scanty. It is likely that this deficiency reflects its immersion in an ideology of managerialism that leaves us unconcerned about the wider influence of our research field.Implications: The paper challenges the research field and its journal editorships to debate where sport management is going, and whom it serves. It encourages discussion that will revitalise and strengthen the discipline and its influence on the practice field of sport management.

Sports and coaching: pasts and futures

Abstract:This eclectic collection of papers on aspects of coaching and sport has its origins in an international conference titled Sports and Coaching: Pasts and Futures hosted by Manchester Metropolitan University’s Institute for Performance Research in June 2011. The contributors come from different disciplines and include some of Britain’s leading scholars together with a number of early career researchers. The work opens with two chapters from teams working in the field of coaching. Robyn Jones and his colleagues explore who it is that is actually coaching and this is followed by a commentary by Don Vinson, Simon Padley and Mark Jeffreys on ethical practice within sport coaching. The methods used in exploring sports history are then discussed in chapter three by Samantha-Jayne Oldfield while the subsequent section by Dave Day on the nineteenth-century athlete and trainer Harry Andrews provides a case study which demonstrates how some of these methods can be employed in practice. The following chapters by Tegan Carpenter and Sevket Akyildiz explore the role of sport in the Soviet Republic and how this impacted at a regional level by using the example of Uzbekistan. The final two chapters are written by sports development researchers John Daniels, who analyses the use of evaluation methods in the field, and Jamie Gold, who considers government policy on physical education over the course of the last quarter of a century. Taken together these eight papers highlight the richness and diversity of ongoing studies into sport and coaching.

Abstract:60 years ago, Jokl addressed the nascent profession of sports medicine with the question 'What is Sports medicine?' [sic]. The goal of the 86-page dissertation was ostensibly to '...outline the scope of sports medicine and to classify the subject', and Jokl, one of sports medicine's original giants, spent considerable effort detailing the range of health and scientific elements that could be included within the subject area.1 In the years since his publication, sports medicine has continued to evolve, but Jokl's foresight was such that the breadth and depth of sport and health-related topics in his 1962 course at the University of Kentucky are still relevant today, echoed in the range of articles in this edition. Abstract:A central issue within sport management is the extent to which the field should develop a distinctive theoretical knowledge base. This paper empirically investigates the connectedness within (intrafield) and between (interfield) management and sport management disciplines in one specific knowledge domain—institutional theory. We utilized a database of 188 sport-related institutional studies and conducted a citation network analysis of the aggregated reference lists from these articles. We argue that the fields of management and sport management act like “ships in the night.” That is, as the field of sport management has become more distinctive, the field is becoming less connected with general management literature and contemporary theoretical discussions. Potential implications for sport management scholarship and understanding the nature of the field are discussed, along with how it may be possible (if desired) to bridge the gap between sport and management research.

The Development of Sports Management Research in Indonesia in the Early Twenty-First Century: A Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract:The purpose of this research is to provide a comprehensive elaboration by describing the descriptive parameters of the publication and extracting the author's keywords in the field of sports management. This study includes a primer for researchers to better understand advances in scientific publications related to exercise management. A thorough examination of the 220 documents found in the Scopus database was carried out from 2003 to 2022 (as of March, 7 2022). According to the findings, the number of publications fluctuated, with the most publications occurring between 2018 and 2020, with a total of 111 documents. Furthermore, with a total of 26 documents, the Journal of Physics Conference Series is the title of the most productive scientific source. Overall, this topic's research is evolving, with new methods and directions being established. As a result, a thorough examination of sports management in a variety of research areas can help researchers and practitioners advance prospective knowledge in these fields.

Abstract:Understanding a discipline's literature is essential to advance in that area. However, there has yet to be a study that summarises the current research on sport policy. Without a study of the topic, particularly one as extensive as the current one, where over 450 papers were evaluated, it is difficult for newcomers to the field and seasoned experts to have a firm grasp of all there is to know about it. Given this context, the current research is necessary and valuable because it is the first to provide insight into the effectiveness and intellectual framework of the sport policy literature selected by the International Journal of Sport Policy and Politics (IJSPP). This study used bibliometric techniques and indicators to analyse IJSPP publications from 2010 to 2022. The research data was collected from Scopus and analysed with bibliometrix and VOSviewer software. We found that the various components of the production (countries, institutions, and authors) in IJSPP work well in collaboration and over 82% of the research results from teamwork. The co-occurrence analysis of keywords comprises nine clusters, the co-citation analysis comprises four, and sport policy was the most significant cluster. Looking at niche topics in the future, sports diplomacy, social justice, elite sport policy, sport for development, and youth sport are just a few of the niche themes that have the potential to come up. This study will be helpful as a roadmap for researchers in different fields who are interested in such studies, as well as for editorial board members and those who work in sport policy and politics.

Abstract:The relationship between sport and the natural environment is bidirectional and critical to the production of sport products, events, and experiences. Researchers have studied sport and the natural environment within the various subdisciplines of sport management. However, given the changing climate and mounting public concern for the environment, there is pressure to reconsider the relevance and significance of the natural environment, which is taken for granted in managerial contexts. Reflecting the importance of the natural environment, the robustness of the current literature, and the potential for the future, we propose a new subdiscipline of sport management called sport ecology . Thus, we proposed, in this paper, a definition for sport ecology , (re)introduced key concepts related to this subdiscipline (e.g., sustainability, green), and highlighted the leading research that serves as the foundation for sport ecology. We concluded with a discussion on the ways sport ecology can inform—and be informed by—other subdisciplines of sport management.

Abstract:Sports medicine expanded tremendously in the 21 st century to treat and prevent sports injuries and enhance performance among athletes of all ages and sport involvement. In 2022, the global sports medicine market exceeded 5 billion U.S. dollars with expected increases of more than 8% per year ( 1 ). Sports medicine educational programs, journal articles, books, and other media proliferate to accommodate growing interest and demand among physicians, other health care professionals, trainers, coaches, athletes, and the general public. While valuable resources are available for sports medicine practitioners that address many aspects of this burgeoning field, few currently available resources address the full breadth of psychological topics relevant to optimize health, well-being, and performance when participating in sports and physical activities.

Abstract:Purpose Although both sports and cities have transformed over the last century, research on the intersection of sports and urban development remains scarce. This special issue was designed to advance a research agenda in relation to sports and urban development. The sports and urban development special issue of International Journal of Sport Marketing and Sponsorship brings together a collection of conceptual, empirical and commentary papers from four continents. Themes explored in this special issue include legacy, governance, image, climate change and sustainability. We encourage collaborative approaches between sport researchers and those with a focus on urban development, urban design and urban governance. Understanding the role of sports in the development of smart cities is an excellent opportunity for these collaborations to occur. Design/methodology/approach A comprehensive review of literature was undertaken to assess the literature related to sports and urban development. Findings In addition to this introductory article, there are ten manuscripts selected for this special issue investigating sports and urban development. Originality/value This special issue seeks to promote more research on sports and urban development, ultimately ultimately advancing theories and providing solutions.
