Abstract:Engineering the shape of nanoparticles has emerged as an effective approach for optimizing their physical/chemical properties. In particular, two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures with their high surface area/volume ratio have opened up exciting opportunities for developing advanced anisotropic materials and facilitating chemical processes that demand high levels of surface interactions. Although the great potential of low-dimensional 2D nanoswimmers has been suggested by theoretical works, very little experimental study has been undertaken thus far. Here we fabricated a low-dimensional magnetic nanomotor based on discotic barium ferrite nanoplates. We demonstrated that the "fuel-to-motion" behavior and the enhanced diffusion of nanoswimmers are not limited to just OD nanospheres or 1D nanorods but are also applicable to 2D nanoplates. In addition, the 2D nanoswimmers showed excellent catalytic performance in removing molecular and particle stains on cloth likely due to their catalytic activity as well as active locomotion that enhanced microconvection of solution. This study validated a new self-powered nanomachine for cleaning application without any requirement of surfactants or external mechanical energy.

Abstract:In this work, we report the design and synthesis of internal energy-driven Janus nanomotors (JNMs), which are composed of certain reactive materials that are capable of converting chemical energy in the backbone of nanomotors into kinetic energy. For this purpose, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) with the anisotropic surface were obtained via a Pickering emulsion. Modified chitosan (as hydrophilic polymer) and functionalized polycaprolactone (as hydrophobic domain) were covalently linked to the surface of bi-functional SPIONs to produce Janus nanoparticles (JNPs). Then, the CALB enzyme was loaded in the PCL hemisphere of JNPs to form the Janus nanomotor. When nanomotors are placed in the phosphate-buffered saline solution, the driving force for motion is provided by the decomposition of polyester into monomers and oligomers on one side of the JNMs. The trajectories of the nanomotors were recorded under different circumstances by a video microscope and analyzed by the mean squared displacement. The results show that the velocity of JNMs increases with an increasing percentage of the loaded enzyme. In addition, the diffusion coefficient enhances up to 87.67% in compared with nanoparticles without enzyme. Controlling the motion direction of JNMs by an external magnetic field is also possible, due to the presence of SPIONs.

Abstract:The synthesis of an innovative self-propelled Janus nanomotor with a diameter of about 75 nm that can be used as a drug carrier is described. The Janus nanomotor is based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with chromium/platinum metallic caps and propelled by decomposing hydrogen peroxide to generate oxygen as a driving force with speeds up to 20.2 μm s(-1) (about 267 body lengths per second). The diffusion coefficient (D) of nanomotors with different H2 O2 concentrations is calculated by tracking the movement of individual particles recorded by means of a self-assembled fluorescence microscope and is significantly larger than free Brownian motion. The traction of a single Janus MSN nanomotor is estimated to be about 13.47×10(-15) N. Finally, intracellular localization and drug release in vitro shows that the amount of Janus MSN nanomotors entering the cells is more than MSNs with same culture time and particle concentrations, meanwhile anticancer drug doxorubicin hydrochloride loaded in Janus MSNs can be slowly released by biodegradation of lipid bilayers in cells.

Abstract:Asymmetric hollow and magnetic mesoporous silica nanocomposites have great potential applications due to their unique structural-functional properties. Here, asymmetric multilayer-sandwich magnetic mesoporous silica nanobottles (MMSNBs) are presented through an interfacial super-assembly strategy. Asymmetric hollow silica nanobottles (SNBs) are first prepared, and Fe3O4 nanoparticles monolayers and mesoporous silica layers are uniformly super-assembled on the surfaces of SNBs, respectively. The high Fe3O4 nanoparticles loading endows MMSNBs with a high magnetization (8.5 emu g(-1)), while the mesoporous silica layers exhibit high surface area (613.4 m(2) g(-1)) and large pore size (3.6 nm). MMSNBs can be employed as a novel type of enzyme-powered nanomotors by integrating catalase (Cat-MMSNBs), which show an average speed of 7.59 mu m s(-1) (approximate to 25 body lengths s(-1)) at 1.5 wt% H2O2. Accordingly, the water quality can be monitored by evaluating the movement speed of Cat-MMSNBs. Moreover, MMSNBs act as a good adsorbent for removing more than 90% of the heavy metal ions with the advantage of the mesoporous structure. In addition, the good magnetic response enables the MMSNBs with precise directional control and is conducive to recycling for repeated operation. This bottom-up interfacial super-assembly construction strategy allows for a new understanding of the rational design and synthesis of multi-functional nanomotors.

Abstract:Nano/-micromotors self-assembling into static and dynamic clusters are of considerable promise to study smart, interactive, responsive, and adaptive nano/-micromaterials that can mimic spatio-temporal patterns, swarming, and collective behaviors widely observed in nature. Previously, the dynamic self-assembly of bubble-propelled catalytic micromotors initiated by capillary forces has been reported. This manuscript shows novel self-assembly modes of magnetic/catalytic Ti/FeNi/Pt tubular micromotors. When chemical fuel (hydrogen peroxide) is added it is decomposed on contact with Pt catalyst into oxygen and water. Here, the non-bubbling motion and autonomous assembly of catalytic/magnetic nanomembranes, i.e. without nucleation/generation of oxygen bubbles, are shown. Moreover, magnetic Ti/FeNi/Pt micromotors are spun using an external magnetic field and they form dynamic clusters balanced by attractive magnetic and repulsive hydrodynamic interactions. Micromotors form dynamic clusters, undergo precession and rapidly propagate through the solution.
Dendritic Janus Nanomotors with Precisely Modulated Coverages and their Effects on Propulsion.

Abstract:Asymmetric dual-function of Janus micro/nanoparticles that have different surface modifications, structures or material properties, are extremely promising as building blocks in constructing micro-/nanomotors. However, current synthesis strategies are usually lack of controlling the coverages of Janus micro/nanoparticles, which hinders in-depth researches of their effects on the performance of Janus nanomotors. This study demonstrates a versatile approach for fabrication of Janus dendritic porous silica nanomotors with precisely modulated coverages from 0 to 100% by controlling the embedded depth of aminopropyl-modified dendritic porous silica nanoparticles (DPSNs-NH2) with positive charges and subsequently adsorbing the oppositely charged Pt nanoparticles. The diffusion coefficients of DPSNs-NH2 with different coverages of Pt NPs are systematically investigated. The propulsion can be enhanced by the improvement of catalytic activity of DPSNs, and half-coated DPSNs-NH2 exhibit highest propulsion among DPSNs-NH2 with other coverages. More importantly, compared with solid silica nanospheres, the initial increase of the coverage of DPSNs-NH2 makes more enhancements to the motion performance，which can be used to optimize the relations between the propulsion velocity and loading efficiency of bovine serum albumin. This work paves the way to fabricate tunable multifunctional Janus micro/nanomotors for future advanced devices.

Abstract:A versatile and high‐yield fabrication method is developed for Janus micromotors featuring a spherical tip configuration, achieved through the localized photocuring of SU‐8 on a TiO2 microsphere array. These motors exhibit various functionalities by loading dyes onto the spheres or modifying the composition of tips. Moreover, the efficacy of this method in the production of multifunctional double‐tipped motors is demonstrated. Synthetic Janus micro/nanomotors can efficiently convert ambient energy into asymmetrical self‐propulsive force, overcoming random thermal fluctuations and enabling autonomous migration. Further modifications to the motors can equip them with different functional modules to meet different needs. However, developing a versatile and high‐yield fabrication method for multifunctional Janus micromotors remains challenging. In this study, a modular fabrication approach for micromotors with a particle‐tip structure based on the self‐focusing lithography induced by an array of TiO2 microspheres is presented. By adjusting the tip composition or loading, precise programming of motor functionality is achieved, allowing for various capabilities such as photoredox reaction‐induced propulsion, fluorescent imaging, electric and magnetic navigation. Furthermore, the flexibility of this fabrication method by selectively loading materials onto two tips is demonstrated to achieve multifunctionality within a micromotor unit. This study proposes a straightforward and versatile approach for modular functional micromotors.

Abstract:Magnetic mesoporous materials have attracted great interest due to their combined property of magnetic nanomaterials and mesoporous materials as well as their potential applications in catalysis, bioenrichment, drug delivery, nanoreactors, etc. In this study, one-dimensional (1D) pod-like magnetic mesoporous silica nanochains with tunable hollow space (Fe3O4@nSiO2@void@mSiO2 nanochain named as PL-MMS nanochain) are rationally synthesized for the first time through a controlled magnetic-induced interface coassembly approach. The obtained PL-MMS possess tunable diameter (300-500 nm), large and perpendicular mesopores (8.2 nm) in the outer shell, silica-protected magnetic responsive core and high surface area (325 m2 g-1). Benefiting from the large voids and unique mesopores, these mesoporous nanochains exhibit superior performance in enzyme (lipase with a size of 4.0 nm) immobilization with a high loading capacity of 223 μg/mg and the immobilized lipase demonstrates enhanced catalytic activity in different pH and temperatures as well as excellent tolerance of organic solvent.

Abstract:1D core-shell magnetic materials with mesopores in shell are highly desired for biocatalysis, magnetic bioseparation, and bioenrichment and biosensing because of their unique microstructure and morphology. In this study, 1D magnetic mesoporous silica nanochains (Fe3O4@nSiO(2)@mSiO(2) nanochain, Magn-MSNCs named as FDUcs-17C) are facilely synthesized via a novel magnetic-field-guided interface coassembly approach in two steps. Fe3O4 particles are coated with nonporous silica in a magnetic field to form 1D Fe3O4@nSiO(2) nanochains. A further interface coassembly of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and silica source in water/n-hexane biliquid system leads to 1D Magn-MSNCs with core-shell-shell structure, uniform diameter (approximate to 310 nm), large and perpendicular mesopores (7.3 nm), high surface area (317 m(2) g(-1)), and high magnetization (34.9 emu g(-1)). Under a rotating magnetic field, the nanochains with loaded zoledronate (a medication for treating bone diseases) in the mesopores, show an interesting suppression effect of osteoclasts differentiation, due to their 1D nanostructure that provides a shearing force in dynamic magnetic field to induce sufficient and effective reactions in cells. Moreover, by loading Au nanoparticles in the mesopores, the 1D Fe3O4@nSiO(2)@mSiO(2)-Au nanochains can service as a catalytically active magnetic nanostirrer for hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol with high catalytic performance and good magnetic recyclability.

Abstract:Exploring micromotors with outstanding propulsion efficiency is of great importance for aspects ranging from enhancement of performance to realization of applications. Improvements in propulsion efficiency lead to a lower fuel requirementand broadens the potential application areas for higher environment compatibility. In this article, a tubular micromotor with catalytic nanoparticle superlattices is fabricated through a simple epitaxial assembly method. A high surface-to-volume ratio due to the use of catalytic nanoparticles, a carbon outer layer and cooperative propulsion of multitubes enables the micromotor to move in biocompatible environment with a low concentration of fuel. In addition, magnetic nanoparticles are integrated into the micromotor to offer effective control of the direction of movement by using a magnetic field. This work provides a simple and low-cost fabrication method for a micromotor with high performance, which is expected to meet practical demands.

Abstract:The development of self-propelled micro/nanomotors (MNMs) has presented a variety of opportunities in the biomedical field because of their surprisingly high performance. However, the biosafety and feasibility of MNMs is still far from satisfactory for disease treatment in clinical application. Silica is one of the most extensively used material for the construction of versatile MNMs and has been intensively applied in the biomedical field due to their excellent biocompatibility, negligible cytotoxicity, and tailorable physiochemical properties such as stimuli-responsive behavior, controllable particle size, surface topology, shape, and mesostructure as well as conjugating targeting molecules and/or gatekeepers to endow enhanced cellular internalization, improved cell selectivity, and on-demand release. Heterosilica-based MNMs, a class of silica-based structures incorporated with diverse functional units and materials, exhibit new burgeoning possibilities for practical biomedical applications. These functional units and compositions substantially created an enormous impact on improving the motion performances and morphological features of MNMs. In this review, we present a systematic overview of the development of the heterosilica-based MNM systems. The discussion is mainly focused on the design and construction of diverse heterosilica-based engines. Meanwhile, we also highlight the effects of key parameters on their performance such as surface properties. Then, we summarize their biomedical applications. We further provide an outlook toward future developments of the heterosilica-based MNMs. This review is expected to inspire further development in future biomedical applications.

Abstract:Biocatalytic micro/nanomotors are objects with micron or nanometer sizes that can transfer local chemical energy into mechanical energy through enzyme catalysis, and thus they hold great promise in the fields of biomedicine, sensors, and environmental science. Their combination with metal- organic frameworks endows biocatalytic motors with many characterizations, including facile synthesis, high and controllable porosity, good biocompatibility, and stimuli-responsive multifunctional behaviors. In this perspective, after illustrating the prerequisites of movement at the micro- and nanoscale, we highlight the recent success of biocatalytic MOFtors and how they resolved specific problems associated with applications in healthcare and water treatment. Also, fundamental principles about the design of biocatalytic MOFtors are elaborated, providing a general guideline to further improve their propulsion performance.

Abstract:Janus nano/micromotors have been developed into various sizes, shapes, and functions for a blaze of applications especially in biomedical and environmental fields. Here, a fabrication method of Janus micromotors is reported by capping hydrogel microspheres with functional nanoparticles (NPs). Microspheres are prepared in droplet microfluidics relying on hydrogel polymerization to obtain spheres with diameters from 20 to 500 mu m. By solidifying a hydrogel layer onto microspheres, functional NPs of MnO2 (catalyst of H2O2), TiO2 (photocatalyst), and Fe3O4 (magnetic guidance) are adhered onto microspheres resulting in Janus micromotors revealing different functionalities. Dynamics of Janus micromotors (diameter around 250 mu m) are explored by analyzing their trajectories in terms of mean squared displacement when immersed in H2O2 solutions of different concentrations, illuminated by light and guided in an external magnetic field. TiO2 Janus micromotors perform well for water purification tasks as is exemplarily demonstrated with a degradation of Methylene Blue dye in water. The proposed fabrication method is versatile and enables to achieve adjustable coverage of a microsphere with NPs as well as to realize multifunctional Janus micromotors by adhering different NPs (e.g., MnO2 and Fe3O4) on a sphere. This method provides an attractive way to fabricate multifunctional Janus micromotors in a cost-effective manner for environmental applications.

The obtained magnetic mesoporous aluminosilicate nanochains (MMAS-NCs) possess well-defined core-shell-shell sandwich nanostructure, tunable perpendicular mesopore channels in the shell (2.7–7.6 nm), high surface area (359 m 2 ·g −1 ), abundant acidic sites, and superparamagnetism with a magnetization saturation of 13.8 emu·g −1 . Thanks to the unique properties, the MMAS-NCs exhibit excellent performance in acting as magnetically recyclable superior solid acid catalysts and nanostirrers with high conversion of over 96.8%, selectivity of 95.0% in the deprotection reaction of benzaldehyde dimethylacetal to benzaldehyde. Moreover, MMAS-NCs exhibit an interesting pore size effect on the catalytic activity, namely, in the pore size range of 2–8 nm, the catalysts with larger pores show significantly enhanced catalytic activity due to the balanced mass transport and density of surface active sites.
Magnetic and Meniscus-Effect Control of Catalytic Rolled-Up Micromotors

Abstract:Rolled-up catalytic micromotors with tubular structures are fabricated by rolling up strained Pt/Co/Ti metallic nanomembranes through selectively etching of the sacrificial lift off resist (LOR). The rolled-up micromotors present distinct motion behaviors in an organic/aqueous mixture fuel compared to those in a pure aqueous fuel. These self-propelled micromotors can move in pure aqueous fuel with a speed up to several millimeters per second. However, when placed into an organic/aqueous mixture fuel, the micromotors walk on the liquid surface. An intermediate Co layer facilitates a magnetically guided motion of these microtubular motors. The motion at the air–liquid interface can be regulated and suspended by the meniscus-climbing effect. Such meniscus-navigated motion represents a novel approach for regulation of micromotors at the air–liquid interface and opens the door to new and exciting operations of these micro-scale machines.
