Abstract:Layered Structures of Metal Ionic Polymers, or Ionic Polymer-Metal CompositesIPMCIPMCs) are formed by a membrane of an ionic electroactive materials flanked by two metal electrodes on both surfaces; they are devices able to change their shape upon application of an electrical external stimulus. This class of materials is used in various fields such as biomedicine, soft robotics, and sensor technology because of their favorable properties (light weight, biocompatibility, fast response to stimulus and good flexibility). With additive manufacturing, actuators can be customized and tailored to specific applications, allowing for the optimization of performance, size, and weight, thus reducing costs and time of fabrication and enhancing functionality and efficiency in various applications. In this review, we present an overview of the newest trend in using different 3D printing techniques to produce electrically responsive IPMC devices.

Abstract:Electroactive polymer (EAP) is a polymer that reacts to electrical stimuli, such as voltage, and can be divided into electronic and ionic EAP by an electrical energy transfer mechanism within the polymer. The mechanism of ionic EAP is the movement of the positive ions inducing voltage change in the polymer membrane. Among the ionic EAPs, an ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) is composed of a metal electrode on the surface of the polymer membrane. A common material for the polymer membrane of IPMC is Nafion containing hydrogen ions, and platinum, gold, and silver are commonly used for the electrode. As a result, IPMC has advantages, such as low voltage requirements, large bending displacement, and bidirectional actuation. Manufacturing of IPMC is composed of preparing the polymer membrane and plating electrode. Preparation methods for the membrane include solution casting, hot pressing, and 3D printing. Meanwhile, electrode formation methods include electroless plating, electroplating, direct assembly process, and sputtering deposition. The manufactured IPMC is widely demonstrated in applications such as grippers, micro-pumps, biomedical, biomimetics, bending sensors, flow sensors, energy harvesters, biosensors, and humidity sensors. This paper will review the overall field of IPMC by demonstrating the categorization, principle, materials, and manufacturing method of IPMC and its applications.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) printing, also known as additive manufacturing, has the advantages of low cost, easy structure operation, rapid prototyping, and easy customization. In the past few years, materials with different structures, compositions, and properties have been widely studied as prospects in the field of 3D printing. This paper reviews the synthesis methods and morphologies of one-, two- and three-dimensional micro/nano materials and their composites, as well as their applications in electrochemistry, such as supercapacitors, batteries and electrocatalysis. The latest progress and breakthroughs in the synthesis and application of different structural materials in 3D-printing materials, as well as the challenges and prospects of electrochemical applications, are discussed.

Abstract:Three-dimensional printing (3DP) has attracted a considerable amount of attention during the past years, being globally recognized as one of the most promising and revolutionary manufacturing technologies. Although the field is rapidly evolving with significant technological advancements, materials research remains a spotlight of interest, essential for the future developments of 3DP. Smart polymers and nanocomposites, which respond to external stimuli by changing their properties and structure, represent an important group of materials that hold a great promise for the fabrication of sensors, actuators, robots, electronics, and medical devices. The interest in exploring functional materials and their 3DP is constantly growing in an attempt to meet the ever-increasing manufacturing demand of complex functional platforms in an efficient manner. In this review, we aim to outline the recent advances in the science and engineering of functional polymers and nanocomposites for 3DP technologies. The report covers temperature-responsive polymers, polymers and nanocomposites with electromagnetic, piezoresistive and piezoelectric behaviors, self-healing polymers, light- and pH-responsive materials, and mechanochromic polymers. The main objective is to link the performance and functionalities to the fundamental properties, chemistry, and physics of the materials, and to the process-driven characteristics, in an attempt to provide a multidisciplinary image and a deeper understanding of the topic. The challenges and opportunities for future research are also discussed.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing, or three-dimensional (3D) printing, offers a unique solution for fabricating complex geometries with high tolerances. Currently, many commercial additive manufacturing machines focus on the printing of polymers with limited functionalities. However, conductive polymers (CPs) can be processed to enable the additive manufacturing of conductive, low-density, and low-cost parts for a myriad of applications. This review summarizes the relevant achievements in the additive manufacturing of conductive polymers (CPs) and conductive polymer nanocomposites, with a discussion of the advantages and limitations of processing and printing these materials compared with alternative traditional manufacturing methods and their properties. Finally, the prospective applications of these additive manufacturing printed conductive materials are explored.

Abstract:Three‐dimensional (3D) printing has received extensive attention due to its unique multidimensional functionality and customizability and has been recognized as one of the most revolutionary manufacturing technologies. Functional 3D printed products represent an important orientation for next‐generation manufacturing and attract a great spotlight for the application in sensors, actuators, robots, electronics, and medical devices. However, the lack of functions of printing polymeric materials dramatically limits the development of functional 3D printing. Different from traditional processing, the physical properties, such as geometry and rheological behavior, of the polymeric materials must match the printing process, making the selection of printable materials limited. More importantly, challenges in large‐scale production of such materials further stifle the development of functional 3D printing industry. In this review, we aim to outline recent advances in polymeric materials and methodologies for the functional 3D printing technology. The reports are classified based on functionalities, including electronic conductive, thermally conductive, electromagnetic interference shielding, energy storage, and energy harvesting materials. This study attempts to provide a comprehensive overview of the challenges and opportunities for 3D printing functional polymeric materials/devices, also seeks to enlighten the orientation of future research in this field.

Abstract:The field of 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM), is developing rapidly in both academic and industrial research environments. New materials and printing technologies, which enable rapid and multimaterial printing, have given rise to new applications and utilizations. However, the main bottleneck for achieving many more applications is the lack of materials with new physical properties. Here, some of the recent reports on novel materials in this field, such as ceramics, glass, shape-memory polymers, and electronics, are reviewed. Although new materials have been reported for all three main printing approaches-fused deposition modeling, binder jetting or laser sintering/melting, and photopolymerization-based approaches, apparently, most of the novel physicochemical properties are associated with materials printed by photopolymerization approaches. Furthermore, the high resolution that can be achieved using this type of 3D printing, together with the new properties, has resulted in new implementations such as microfluidic, biomedical devices, and soft robotics. Therefore, the focus here is on photopolymerization-based additive manufacturing including the recent development of new methods, novel monomers, and photoinitiators, which result in previously inaccessible applications such as complex ceramic structures, embedded electronics, and responsive 3D objects.

Abstract:Iontronics can improve wearable devices, implantable devices, and environmental sensors by replacing traditional rigid electronics with viscoelastic materials that mimic biological tissue. Circuit components, including diodes, transistors, and power sources, have been fabricated with soft materials that utilize ionic current instead of metals and electronic current. However, the fabrication of these iontronic components can be tedious, and widely applicable manufacturing methods are lacking, thus hindering the development of complex iontronic circuits for real-world applications. While 3D printing has recently gained popularity due to its versatility, we suggest that it has been underutilized for iontronics. By combining multi-material 3D printing and iontronics, we show the ability to rapidly iterate ionic diode design and integrate these diodes within a complex structure with advanced mechanical behavior. With an updated 3D model design, we create a new stretchable diode that is insensitive to strain, a feature that can be crucial for applications requiring soft electronics. To further emphasize the adaptability of printing soft materials, we demonstrate that three components of the based ink (conductive polymers, a thickening agent, and a crosslinker) can be used to optimize print quality and the resulting material properties. In doing so, we thoroughly characterize a mixed ionic-electronic conducing ink using poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) that can provide a foundation for the further development of extrusion printed iontronics. Compared to previously established methods, multi-material printing reduces cost, wasted material, and time required to develop complex devices in a manner that can be personized as well as highly reproducible.

Abstract:Fabrication and assembly of electrodes and electrolytes play an important role in promoting the performance of electrochemical energy storage (EES) devices such as batteries and supercapacitors. Traditional fabrication techniques have limitations in controlling the geometry and architecture of the electrode and solid-state electrolytes, which would otherwise compromise the performance. 3D printing, a disruptive manufacturing technology, has emerged as an innovative approach to fabricating EES devices from nanoscale to macroscale, providing great opportunities to accurately control device geometry (e.g., dimension, porosity, and morphology) and structure with enhanced specific energy and power densities. Moreover, the “additive” manufacturing nature of 3D printing provides excellent controllability of the electrode thickness with much simplified process in a cost effective manner. With the unique spatial and temporal material manipulation capability, 3D printing can integrate multiple nano-materials in the same print, and multi-functional EES devices (including functional gradient devices) can be fabricated. Herein, we review recent advances in 3D printing of EES devices. We focus on two major 3D printing technologies including direct writing and inkjet printing. The direct material deposition characteristics of these two processes enable them to print on a variety of flat substrates, even a conformal one, well suiting them to applications such as wearable devices and on-chip integrations. Other potential 3D printing techniques such as freeze nano-printing, stereolithography, fused deposition modeling, binder jetting, laminated object manufacturing, and metal 3D printing are also introduced. The advantages and limitations of each 3D printing technology are extensively discussed. More importantly, we provide a perspective on how to integrate the emerging 3D printing with existing technologies to create structures over multiple length scale from nano to macro for EES applications.

Abstract:The development of hydrogels and ionic gels for applications in fields such as soft electronics and wearable sensors is limited by liquid evaporation or leakage. Ionic conductors without volatile liquids are better choices for flexible and transparent devices. Here, a liquid polymer electrolyte (LPE) is prepared from a mixture of lithium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide and polyethylene glycol (PEG) above the melting point of PEG. A three-dimensional (3D) printable solvent-free ionic elastomer (IE) is introduced by photopolymerization of ethyl acrylate and hydroxyethyl acrylate in the prepared LPE. The conductivity is significantly improved by the presence of a high content of the lithium salt. Dynamic cross-linking networks improve the stretchability and resilience of the elastomer. The pattern design capability of the IE is provided by light-curing 3D printing. These features demonstrate that the IE has broad application prospects in flexible sensors, ion skins, and soft robots.

Abstract:<p>The increasing energy requirements to power the modern world has driven active research into more advanced electrochemical energy storage devices (EESD) with both high energy densities and power densities. Wide range of newly discovered materials with promising electrochemical properties have shown great potential for next-generation devices, but their performance is normally associated with contradicting demands of thin electrodes and high mass loading that can be hardly achieved for practical applications. Design of three-dimensional (3D) porous electrodes can increase the mass loading while maintaining the effective charge transport even with thick electrodes, which has proven to be efficient to overcome the limitations. 3D structures have also been demonstrated excellent structural stability to withstand strong strains and stresses generated during charge/discharge cycle. 3D printing, which can fabricate various delicate and complex structural designs, thus offering brand-new opportunities for the rational design and facile construction of next-generation EESDs. The recent developments in 3D printing of next-generation EESDs with high performance are reviewed. Advanced/multiscale electrode structures, such as hierarchically porous structure that can be constructed via high resolution 3D printing or with post-treatment, are further emphasized. The ability of current 3D printing techniques to fulfill multi-material printing to fulfill simple packaging will be covered.</p>

Abstract:Electrically conductive polymer composites have sparked considerable interest in the research community due to their unique advantages that come from combining regular polymers with the electronic properties of metals or semiconductors in a synergistic manner. Additive manufacturing (AM) offers promising prospects in the realm of conductive polymer composites by allowing for greater design flexibility, more complicated shapes, and rapid manufacturing. In addition, a rising number of additive manufacturing (AM) methods, including material extrusion, vat photopolymerization, material and binder jetting, powder bed fusion, and sheet lamination are now available for the 3D printing of conductive polymer composites. In this article, we present an insight into current research advances in the field of conductive polymer composites developed for additive manufacturing, which accelerate the design and development of 3D printable electrical devices. We examine various AM processes in terms of their respective limitations, address the material requirements and significant breakthroughs in 3D printing of conductive polymer composites, and discuss promising electronic applications – such as flexible electronics, energy storage and conversion devices, etc. This overview concludes with an assessment of potential future directions and themes in this developing area.

Abstract:The development of advanced solid‐state energy storage devices is contingent upon finding new ways to produce and manufacture scalable, high modulus solid‐state electrolytes which can simultaneously provide high ionic conductivity and robust mechanical integrity. In this work, we report an efficient one‐step process to manufacture solid polymer electrolytes composed of nano‐scale ion‐conducting channels embedded in a rigid crosslinked polymer matrix, via digital light projection 3D printing. A visible light mediated polymerization induced microphase separation approach is utilized, which produces materials with two chemically independent nanoscale domains with highly tunable nanoarchitectures. By producing materials containing a polyethylene oxide domain swelled with an ionic liquid, robust solid polymer electrolytes with outstanding room temperature (22°C) shear modulus (G' > 108 Pa) and ionic conductivities up to σ = 3 × 10−4 S/cm are achieved. The nanostructured 3D printed electrolytes were fabricated into a custom geometry and employed in a symmetric carbon supercapacitor, demonstrating the scalability of the fabrication and the functionality of the electrolyte. Critically, these high‐performance materials are manufactured on‐demand using inexpensive and commercially available 3D printers, which allows the facile modular design of solid polymer electrolytes with custom geometries. Tough Transient Ionic Junctions Printed with Ionic Microgels

Abstract:Ionic junctions asymmetrically conduct currents via ions. 3D printing of ionic microgels is developed to produce ionic junctions with high performance and fidelity. With degradable biopolymers and a double‐network design, the printed ionic junctions are cohesive and tough, and can disintegrate within days. With 3D ionic microgel printing, an ionic transistor, an ionic rectifier, and an ionic touchpad are demonstrated. Emerging soft ionotronics better match the human body mechanically and electrically compared to conventional rigid electronics. They hold great potential for human‐machine interfaces, wearable and implantable devices, and soft machines. Among various ionotronic devices, ionic junctions play critical roles in rectifying currents as electrical p–n junctions. Existing ionic junctions, however, are limited in electrical and mechanical performance, and are difficult to fabricate and degrade. Herein, the design, fabrication, and characterization of tough transient ionic junctions fabricated via 3D ionic microgel printing is reported. The 3D printing method demonstrates excellent printability and allows one to fabricate ionic junctions of various configurations with high fidelity. By combining ionic microgels, degradable networks, and highly charged biopolymers, the ionic junctions feature high stretchability (stretch limit 27), high fracture energy (>1000 Jm−2), excellent electrical performance (current rectification ratio >100), and transient stability (degrade in 1 week). A variety of ionotronic devices, including ionic diodes, ionic bipolar junction transistors, ionic full‐wave rectifiers, and ionic touchpads are further demonstrated. This study merges ionotronics, 3D printing, and degradable hydrogels, and will motivate the future development of high‐performance transient ionotronics.

These systems were investigated for their thermal and electrochemical behaviour, as well as under the aspect of ion motion via PFG‐NMR. The ionic conductivities of the ILs/IGs are in the range of 10‐4 – 10‐3 Scm‐1 at elevated temperatures and the diffusion coefficients were around 10‐11 m2s‐1. Successful 3D printing of an IG with 70 wt% of IL is possible via stereolithography approaches, opening up applications in, e.g., structured ion‐conductive membranes.
