Abstract:In order to prepare multifunctional fluorescent hydrogel (FH), functional Schiff base ligands have been incorporated into polymer networks. We reported here a novel multifunctional Schiff base functionalized FH, P(AM‐PEGA‐PEPMA), and its corresponding metallohydrogel, Zn2+‐P(AM‐PEGA‐PEPMA), which exhibited tunable fluorescence intensity, self‐healing ability, stretchability, and shape‐memory property. P(AM‐PEGA‐PEPMA) was obtained by one‐pot micellar copolymerization and Zn2+‐P(AM‐PEGA‐PEPMA) was formed by metal coordination between Schiff base ligand (PEPMA) and Zn2+. Zn2+‐P(AM‐PEGA‐PEPMA) hydrogel was obtained after cross‐linking by the PEPMA‐Zn2+ metal coordination, whose maximum tensile strain can reach over 900%. The fluorescent intensity of Zn2+‐P(AM‐PEGA‐PEPMA) hydrogel gradually increased with the increase of Zn2+ concentration ([Zn2+]). When [Zn2+] was 0.1 M, it could reach to 400% of the original fluorescence intensity. The reversible fluorescence change of hydrogel can be controlled by Zn2+ together with pH. What's more, the Zn2+‐P(AM‐PEGA‐PEPMA) hydrogel has the ability to self‐heal within a minute at room temperature. The shape of the P(AM‐PEGA‐PEPMA) hydrogel was memorized/restored by the forming/breaking the metal coordination between PEPMA and Fe3+. With above properties, P(AM‐PEGA‐PEPMA) hydrogel and Zn2+‐P(AM‐PEGA‐PEPMA) hydrogel are expected to be applied for encryption, flexible sensors and soft wearable devices.

Functional Microgel for Selective and Sensitive Colorimetric Detection of Fe2+ Ions in HEPES Buffer Aqueous Solutions

Abstract:A functional monomer, namely, 1-hexene-4-(benzal-2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridines)pyridinium bromide (HTP) was synthesized and incorporated into the cross-linking network of microgels. The HTP-functionalized microgels (HTP-MGs) were synthesized by surfactant-free emulsion copolymerization with N-isopropylacrylamide as the main monomer, 1-vinylimidazole as a quaternization cross-linkable comonomer, HTP as the functional comonomer, and 1,6-dibromhexane as the quaternization agent. The obtained HTP-MGs were spherical with a hydrodynamic radius Rh of 205 +/- 2 nm and uniform size distribution in HEPES buffer aqueous solutions at 25 degrees C. The HTP-MGs exhibited a characteristic UV-vis absorption peak at 315 nm and a characteristic fluorescent emission peak at 430 nm, respectively. The HTP-MGs can selectively, sensitively, and optically respond to Fe2+ ions in aqueous solution with a fast response time of 3 s in wide pH (2-10) and temperature (25-50 degrees C) ranges, resulting in a color change in HTP-MG HEPES buffer aqueous solutions from colorless to purplish red, which can be easily distinguished by naked eyes. A linear concentration range of 0-14 mu M and a detection limit (DL) of 82 nM were achieved for detecting Fe2+ ions in HEPES buffer aqueous solutions (pH = 7) at 25 degrees C. The molar binding ratio of the HTP moiety within HTP-MGs to Fe2+ ions was 2:1, as revealed by Job's plot. It was found that the coexistence of 15 species of other metal ions except of Cu2+ ions studied here did not affect the detection of Fe2+ ions. Furthermore, a fluorescent emission peak at 371 nm with strongly enhanced fluorescent intensity was observed for HTP-MG HEPES buffer aqueous solutions with the addition of Zn2+ or Cd2+ ions. By combining the optical response to Fe2+ ions and fluorescent response to Zn2+ ions, it was demonstrated that HTP-MGs could also have potential applications in the fields of encryption and anti-counterfeiting.
Hydrophobic association-improved multi-functional hydrogels with liquid metal droplets stabilized by xanthan gum and PEDOT:PSS for strain sensors

Abstract:The synthesis of liquid metal-infused hydrogels, typically constituted by polyacrylamide networks crosslinked through covalent bonds, often encounters a conundrum: they exhibit restricted extensibility and a diminished capacity for self-repair, owing to the inherently irreversible nature of the covalent linkages. This study introduces a hydrophobically associated hydrogel embedding gallium (Ga)-droplets, realized through the in situ free radical copolymerization of hydrophobic hexadecyl methacrylate (HMA) and hydrophilic acrylamide (AM) in a milieu containing xanthan gum (XG) and PEDOT:PSS, which co-stabilizes the Ga-droplets. The Ga-droplets, synergistically functioning as conductive agents alongside PEDOT:PSS, also expedite the hydrogel's formation. The resultant XG/PEDOT:PSS-Ga-P(AM-HMA) hydrogel is distinguished by its remarkable extensibility (2950 %), exceptional toughness (3.28 MJ/m3), superior adherence to hydrophobic, smooth substrates, and an innate ability for hydrophobic-driven self-healing. As a strain sensing medium, this hydrogel-based sensor exhibits heightened sensitivity (gauge factor = 12.66), low detection threshold (0.1 %), and robust durability (>500 cycles). Furthermore, the inclusion of glycerol endows the XG/PEDOT:PSS-Ga-P(AM-HMA) hydrogel with anti-freezing properties without compromising its mechanical integrity and sensing acumen. This sensor adeptly captures a spectrum of human movements, from the nuanced radial pulse to extensive joint articulations. This research heralds a novel approach for fabricating multifaceted PAM-based hydrogels with toughness and superior sensing capabilities.

Abstract:Tough and multicolor-changing hydrogels have shown great potential in sensing devices, wearable electronics, and human–machine interfaces. However, most of these hydrogels are either mechanically weak or lack the multi-responsive color-change property. Here, we designed and fabricated gelatin/pHEAA hydrogels crosslinked by metal–organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles (NPs) and with a nanocomposite and double-network structure using a facile, one-pot method. The presence of vinyl-functional zeolitic imidazole framework-8 MOF NPs in hydrogels provided not only multiple chemical and physical interactions with polymer networks to strengthen their mechanical properties (a tensile strength of ∼2.4 MPa, a fracture strain of ∼14, and a fracture energy of ∼14.10 MJ/m3) but also UV-triggered multi-fluorescence changes ranging from primary red–green–blue to secondary yellow, magenta, cyan, and white colors. More importantly, MOF/gelatin/pHEAA hydrogels can be further fabricated to possess different fluorescence-responsive patterns for QR codes or potential information storage. This work provides a design concept and hydrogel systems for developing tough, multi-color-changing hydrogels for imaging and other optical applications.

Abstract:We developed a fluorescent double network hydrogel with ionic responsiveness and high mechanical properties for visual detection. The nanocomposite hydrogel of laponite and polyacrylamide serves as the first network, while the ionic cross-linked hydrogel of terbium ions and sodium alginate serves as the second network. The double-network structure, the introduction of nanoparticles and the reversible ionic cross-linked interactions confer high mechanical properties to the hydrogel. Terbium ions are not only used as the ionic cross-linked points, but also used as green emitters to endow hydrogels with fluorescent properties. On the basis of the "antenna effect" of terbium ions and the ion exchange interaction, the fluorescence of the hydrogels can make selective responses to various ions (such as organic acid radical ions, transition metal ions) in aqueous solutions, which enables a convenient strategy for visual detection toward ions. Consequently, the fluorescent double network hydrogel fabricated in this study is promising for use in the field of visual sensor detection.

Abstract:A robust and multifunctional anisotropic hydrogel is obtained via the combination of pre‐stretching, metal‐coordination, and carbon dots embedding. The great orientation of the molecular chains as well as the integrated carbon dots endowed the hydrogel with high robustness, great anti‐swelling, and remarkable visual sensing properties, which provided valuable insights for the development of high‐performance underwater sensors. The intricate muscle arrangement structure endows the biological tissues with unique mechanical properties. Inspired by that, a mechanically robust and multifunctional anisotropic Polyacrylamide/Sodium alginate/Zirconium ion/Carbon dots (PAM/SA/Zr4+/CDs, PSZC) hydrogel is developed through the synergistic effect of mechanical‐assisted stretching, Zr4+ metal‐coordination and CDs embedding. The resulting hydrogel exhibited an impressive tensile strength of 2.56 MPa and exceptional toughness of 10.10 MJ m−3 along the stretching direction, attributing to the oriented alignment of PAM and SA molecular chains induced by mechanical‐assisted stretching and metal‐coordination. The dense network structure endowed the PSZC hydrogel with excellent anti‐swelling performance, achieving a swelling ratio of only 1.7% after being stored in water for 30 days. The presence of Zr4+ conferred remarkable electrical conductivity of 2.15 S m−1 to the PSZC hydrogel. Furthermore, the integration of carbon dots imparted the PSZC hydrogel fluorescence properties, rendering it visual sensing capabilities. Overall, a straightforward strategy is proposed for fabricating a mechanically robust and multifunctional hydrogel suitable for underwater sensing and visual sensing, offering valuable insights for the development of high‐performance underwater sensors.

Abstract:Fluorescent hydrogels have promising applications in biomedical and engineering fields such as information display and flexible electronics, which usually suffer from poor mechanical properties. Herein, we report a facile strategy to fabricate nanocomposite hydrogels with high toughness and strong fluorescence by soaking poly(methylacrylic acid) (PMAAc) hydrogels in a carbon dot (CD) suspension and then re-equilibrating in water. The equilibrated hydrogels exhibited strong fluorescence because of CDs trapped inside the gel matrix due to the formation of hydrogen bonds between the amino group of CDs and carboxylic group of PMAAc. When the CD suspensions had an appropriate concentration, the mechanical properties of hydrogels were greatly enhanced; the tensile breaking stress and Young's modulus can reach high values up to 5.8 and 158 MPa, respectively. We revealed that the mechanical enhancement of hydrogels mainly originated from the residual ethylenediamine in CD suspension, which formed strong hydrogen bonds with the gel matrix. Since the fluorescence of CD can be quenched by ferric ions, patterning the fluorescent hydrogel was realized by site-specific diffusion of ferric ions through a silhouetted mask to the underneath CD-composited hydrogel sheet. This kind of tough and fluorescent hydrogel should find applications in diverse fields for chemical sensing, information display, etc.
Polyamidoamine Dendrimers Functionalized Water-Stable Metal–Organic Frameworks for Sensitive Fluorescent Detection of Heavy Metal Ions in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:In this work, polyamidoamine (PAMAM)-functionalized water-stable Al-based metal–organic frameworks (MIL-53(Al)-NH2) were proposed with enhanced fluorescence intensity, and used for the sensitive detection of heavy metal ions in aqueous solution. The size and morphology of MIL-53(Al)-NH2 were effectively optimized by regulating the component of the reaction solvents. PAMAM dendrimers were subsequently grafted onto the surface with glutaraldehyde as a cross-linking agent. It was found that the size and morphology of MIL-53(Al)-NH2 have great influence on their fluorescence properties, and PAMAM grafting could distinctly further improve their fluorescence intensity. With higher fluorescence intensity, the PAMAM-grafted MIL-53(Al)-NH2 showed good linearity (R2 = 0.9925–0.9990) and satisfactory sensitivity (LOD = 1.1–8.6 μmol) in heavy metal ions determination. Fluorescence enhancement and heavy metal ions detection mechanisms were discussed following the experimental results. Furthermore, analogous water-stable Materials of Institute Lavoisier (MIL) metal–organic frameworks such as MIL-53(Fe)-NH2 were also proved to have similar fluorescence enhancement performance after PAMAM modification, which demonstrates the universality of the method and the great application prospects in the design of PAMAM-functionalized high-sensitivity fluorescence sensors.

Abstract:Natural polymer-based luminescent materials (NPLMs) are widely used in various fields of science and technology during the high-tech era. This study describes the formation of polyacrylamide (PAM) by thermally initiated free radical in situ polymerization of acrylamide monomer. The resulting hydrogel is physically entangled and chemically crosslinked with hypromellose (HPMC) to create a three-dimensional network structure. Lanthanide organic compatibilizers (Ln-L) are then introduced as luminescent units to produce fluorescent hydrogel materials. The study found that the tensile strength of PAM/HPMC/Ln (0/6 Eu/Tb) hydrogel increased by 230.53 % from 11.76 to 27.11 MPa. Similarly, the compressive strength increased by 208.30 % from 16.14 to 33.62 MPa. Additionally, by adjusting the molar ratio of lanthanide metals, hydrogels can achieve colorful fluorescence modulation. Moreover, an information encryption function was implemented using a Python design program in combination with the fluorescent properties of hydrogels.

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination in water and soil are harmful and destructive to the environment, it has always been regarded as a big problem. Herein, we developed a self-healing fluorescent hydrogel based on oxidized carboxymethyl cellulose with excellent sensing and adsorption abilities for Ag+. The detection and adsorption effects of hydrogels on heavy metal ions were studied. It turned out that the fluorescent hydrogel has sensitive detection and high adsorption capacity for Ag+, the detection limit was 3.798 μM, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 407 mg/g. The adsorption isotherm fitted the Langmuir model well, and the pseudo-secondary model for adsorption kinetics fitted well. The hydrogel could heal itself without external stimulus, it could be easily regenerated 7 times without loss of adsorption performance. In short, the prepared hydrogel has capability of self-healing, detecting and adsorbing heavy metal ions at the same time, good mechanical strength, these all made it a promising long-life adsorbent and provided a new way for wastewater treatment.
A promising absorbent of acrylic acid/poly(ethylene glycol) hydrogel prepared by glow-discharge electrolysis plasma

Abstract:Abstract An acrylic acid/poly(ethylene glycol) (AAc/PEG) hydrogel was synthesized in aqueous solution by a simple one-step method using glow-discharge electrolysis plasma (GDEP) technique. The structure of AAc/PEG hydrogel was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Factors influencing the adsorption of heavy-metal ions such as solution pH, contact time, initial heavy-metal ion concentration were examined systematically by batch experiments. Results showed that both chemical complexation and ion exchange played an important role for heavy-metal ion adsorption onto AAc/PEG hydrogel. The adsorption isothermals followed the Langmuir isotherm and the adsorption kinetics fitted the pseudo-second-order model at 25°C with a pH 6. In addition, AAc/PEG hydrogel can be also regenerated and re-used.

Abstract:A novel kind of p(HEMA-co-AA) fluorescent hydrogels with high strength are first generated through one-step photopolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), acrylic acid (AA), and HEMA-modified carbon dots (HMCDs). Herein, HMCDs are used as new nontoxic fluorescent crosslinking centers. The novel HMCDs-based fluorescent hydrogels not only display stable photoluminescence, but have high mechanical strength. The fluorescent properties of the HMCDs-based hydrogel films are similar as that of CDs solution and stable for a prolonged duration. Besides, the fluorescent intensity of HMCDs-based hydrogels can be changed by controlling the HMCD content. The tensile strength of the fluorescent hydrogels with 1 wt% HMCD content can reach up to ~ 12 MPa, higher than that of the conventional hydrogels. More importantly, the mechanical properties can be adjusted by changing the water content and HMCD content. The enhanced mechanical strength is probably attributed to the relatively ordered hierarchical microstructure.

Abstract:Fluorescent polymer hydrogels (FPHs) with tunable luminous features have attracted immense interest. Nevertheless, until now, the development of most FPHs had been hindered by their poor mechanical properties and limited application range. This study presents a novel strategy to fabricate high-strength, multi-application cellulosic fluorescent hydrogels using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and fluorescent nanocellulose (containing pyrene tetracarboxylic acid) through a salting-out process. Such strategy enables cellulosic hydrogels with high tensile strength and toughness (26.45 MPa and 201.27 MJ/m3), 3 ), compressive strength (165.58 MPa), dual-responsive fluorescence (acid/base and temperature), and multiple applications. Specifically, cellulosic hydrogels exhibit fluorescence switching through the utilization of lanthanide metals (Eu3+/Tb3+), 3 + /Tb 3 + ), acid/base, and temperature, owing to the presence of perylene tetracarboxylic acid as a fluorescent moiety with an aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect. Based on this, the resulting hydrogels were utilized in rewritable display systems, temperature monitoring, and encrypted QR codes. This study envisions opening new possibilities for the development of high-strength fluorescent hydrogels with multiple applications.
Hydrogel Diffraction Gratings Functionalized with Crown Ether for Heavy Metal Ion Detection

Abstract:Hydrogel diffraction gratings containing crown-ether functional groups were developed as a new sensing strategy for heavy metal ion detection. The gratings were fabricated by soft-lithographic duplication of photoinduced surface-relief-gratings (SRGs) on azo polymer masters to the hydrogel surfaces. In the fabrication, the elastomer stamps were obtained by replica-molding against the SRG-bearing masters. The hydrogel gratings were fabricated by micro-contact printing with the stamps and in situ photo-polymerization of acrylamide, crown ether monomer, crosslinker and photo-initiator in a mixed DMSO/H2O solution. The quantitative detection of Pb2+ ions was achieved by monitoring the variation of diffraction efficiency of the gratings when exposed to Pb(NO3)(2) solutions with different ion concentrations. The diffraction efficiency (DE) variation was triggered by the binding of Pb2+ ions with crown-ether rings and increasing amount of mobile counter-ions in the hydrogel due to Donnan potential. The mobile ions in the hydrogel established an excess osmotic pressure, which caused the grating to swell and DE variation. The saturated diffraction efficiency (DE/DE0) was observed to be linearly correlated with the Pb(NO3)(2) concentration in the testing range. The gratings developed in this study show excellent sensitivity to the Pb2+ ion with the fast response and high selectivity to the analytes. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.
Ion-induced white-light-emitting polymeric hydrogels with high mechanical strength and reversible stimuli-responsive properties

Abstract:We have developed a facile strategy to fabricate model multicolor hydrogels via a straightforward mixing process of poly acrylonitrile-grafted methacrylamide (PANMAM), polymethacrylic acid (PMAA) and doped lanthanide (Eu/Tb) and zinc ions to form the interpenetrating dual-polymer gel networks. The hydrogels exhibit excellent tunability of multi-spectrum emission colors (including white light) by simply varying the stoichiometry of metal ions. Furthermore, taking the advantage of different metal ion response mechanisms, we have demonstrated the reversible acidity/alkalinity stimuli-responsive behaviors of white-light-emitting hydrogel (WLE gel). Meanwhile, the unique cross-linked network formed through hydrogen-bonding, metal-ligand coordination and ionic interaction is introduced to achieve favorable mechanical strength of hydrogels. These properties enable the possibility in obtaining fluorescent patterns on hydrogels, which are promising candidate for encrypted information with improved security.

Fluorescent hydrogel waveguide for on-site detection of heavy metal ions.

Abstract:Hydrogels have great applications in tissue engineering and drug delivery. Recently, there have been intense interests in developments and applications of nanocomposite hydrogels by incorporating nanomaterials into polymer matrix, which endows the hydrogels with new functionalities. Here, we report on the first carbon dots (CDs) doped hydrogel waveguide for selective, on-site detection of heavy metal ions in aqueous solutions. The CDs-doped hydrogel waveguide exhibits efficient light confinement in water due to the refractive index contrast. The smooth waveguide surfaces lead to low light scattering loss. Real-time spectra measurement of the CDs-doped hydrogel waveguide with a compact interrogation setup demonstrates that the novel design can be used as a portable, robust sensing platform for on-site analysis and assessment of heavy metal ions.
A novel bio-based fluorescent N, P-CDs@CMC/PEI composite hydrogel for sensitive detection and efficient capture of toxic heavy metal ions

Abstract:To address the serious environmental pollution problems of toxic heavy metal ions in water bodies, a novel fluorescent composite hydrogel N, P-CDs@CMC/PEI with a bio-based polymer matrix of carboxylmethyl cellulose (CMC), polyethylenimine (PEI) as a second interpenetrating network and N, P-doped carbon dots (N, P-CDs) as a fluorescent probe was prepared for simultaneous detection and capture of HMIs by a facile and simple one-step approach. The morphology, chemical structure, swelling ratio, mechanical strength and fluorescence property of these composite hydrogels were studied through varied characterization methods. The composite hydrogel showed sensitive and selective fluorescence response with Hg(II) and Fe(III) and the according LOD values were 0.48 and 0.27 mg L-1, respectively. The relationship between the types of the adsorbent, pH value, HMIs concentration and temperature on the adsorption capacity of these composite hydrogels were studied. The pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model were applicable to explain the adsorption process of CPH2 for Hg(II) and Cr(VI). The maximum calculated adsorption capacities for the above targeted HMIs by Langmuir model were 846.7 and 289.5 mg g-1, respectively. Coexisting inorganic salts and organic acids in low concentration had little effects on Hg(II) and Cr(VI) removal and the composite hydrogel showed good recyclability and stability for Hg(II) and Cr(VI) removal after four cycles. The electrostatic attraction and coordination covalent bonds were responsible for the adsorption process.
Novel fluorescent hydrogel for the adsorption and detection of Fe (III)

Abstract:A novel PNIPAAm-CD hydrogel with good adsorption property and stable fluorescence detection for Fe3+ was prepared by copolymerizing PCDs with NIPAAm monomers. As a fluorescence probe, carbon quantum dots (CDs) were modified by glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) to obtain PCDs, which had double bond and could react with N-isopropyl acrylamide to form hydrogel. The functionalization of the amine groups on the surface of the PCDs enables PNIPAAm-CD hydrogel also exhibits photoluminescence behavior. In addition, the PNIPAAm-CD hydrogels stably shows higher adsorption performance for Fe3+ than the pure PNIPAAm hydrogel. The honeycomb PNIPAAm-CD hydrogel had a good quenching response to metallic iron ions, and the detection limit was as low as 0.27 μM in the range of 1μM~1mM. The results of adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics showed that the adsorption procedure of metal ions conforms to the pseudo-second-order model and langmuir model, respectively. The effective detection and the high adsorption of PNIPAAm-CD hydrogel for Fe3+ make it an effective portable platform potential, which has the dual functions of visual detection and adsorption of Fe3+.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels with intrinsic flexibility, high sensitivity, antibacterial activity, and repeatability are used in wearable devices. The development of conductive hydrogels with simultaneously high conductivity, reliability, and controllable degradability remains a challenge. Therefore, conductive composite hydrogel polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-stabilized eutectic gallium and indium (EGaIn)/polyacrylamide (PAAm)/polyacrylic acid (PAA)@FeCl 3 @polyprrole (PPy) (/ 3 @PPy, where x represents EGaIn content) was employed to fabricate a multi-cross-linked network and interpenetrating hydrogel with high conductivity, mechanical properties, and controllable degradability. Ga 3+ /Fe 3+ –carboxyl group coordination bonds can act as a dynamic cross-linking network to promote controllable degradability. Meanwhile, EGaIn liquid metal and PPy, as electronic conductors, conferred the composite hydrogel with good conductivity. The effects of EGaIn liquid metal content on mechanical properties and conductivity were investigated in detail. A simple strain sensor fabricated by using / 3 @PPy achieved the detection of the current signal of human motions. The conductive composite hydrogel had good conductivity (8.1 S m −1 ), acceptable sensitivity (gauge factor of 0.28), and reliability (500 cycles at 200% strain). Furthermore, the prepared composite can be degraded in acid and base solutions for environmental preservation. This work provides a feasible method for the construction of multifunctional robust hydrogel strain sensors to facilitate the practical development of sensors for monitoring human motions.

Abstract:Taking Cu2+, Pb2+ and Ag+ as examples of target cations, we describe a general strategy for constructing photonic metal ion sensing hydrogels that allow highly sensitive and selective detection via visual color changes. The sensors consist of heavy metal ion sensitive hydrogels with inverse opal structure. The presence of target cations causes shrinkage of the hydrogels and blue shift of the refraction peak wavelength with a detection limit lower than 1 nM. The interconnected macropores and the preorganized ligands makes these sensors sensitive and selective to the target ions without significant interference from pH, while the response mechanism based on the release of water of hydration after coordination prevents interference from ionic strength and anions. With this sensory system, direct, sensitive, rapid and selective detection of heavy metal ions with a broad dynamic range is achieved without expensive instruments, providing general methods for designing colorimetric metal ion sensing materials.
