Abstract:Much concern has been raised of late regarding factors predicting vulnerability to addictive behaviors in general and most recently those related to the newly emerging area of risk of excessive and addictive patterns of use on the internet, including social media and gaming. The current study was designed to investigate the relationship between levels of addictive patterns of internet usage (as related to social media) and perceived self-efficacy among university-aged students in Palestine (a country with some of the highest levels of internet addiction). The sample consisted of 505 university students, selected randomly across area of study. Results indicated a high negative relationship between excessive internet use/addictive patterns of use and perceived self-efficacy. Findings conversely showed no significant differences in internet addiction and perceived self-efficacy dependent on area of study, gender, age or academic level. These conclusions illuminate concerns related to factors of vulnerability as well as possible negative effects of excessive internet use and self-efficacy, especially in the highly sensitive group of university students where behavioral patterns may lead to lifelong habits and/or interfere with developmental and educational tasks and demands. In addition, as self-efficacy is known to be a risk factor in both symptoms of depression and suicidal ideation, further research into this relationship may be critical in devising interventions to both reduce internet addiction and increase self-efficacy during the critical life period of late adolescence.

Abstract:The present study investigates the relationship between social self-efficacy, loneliness and internet addiction among Hashemite University students. It defines the level of social self-efficacy, and whether there are statistically significant differences by gender, academic specialization and academic level; and defines the levels of loneliness and internet addiction. The purposive sample consisted of (618) students at Hashemite University. The Social Self-efficacy, Loneliness and Internet Addiction Scales were used. The results show that the level of social self-efficacy was medium, with statistically significant differences in the level of social self-efficacy attributed to students by gender in favor of male students, and in the level of social self-efficacy by academic level in favor of second-year students. The level of loneliness was medium, as was the level of internet addiction. There was a negative correlation between social self-efficacy and loneliness and internet addiction, and a positive correlation between loneliness and internet addiction.

Abstract:This study aimed to examine the mediating effect of social media addiction on the relationship between leisure boredom and loneliness. A total of 330 high school students in Istanbul, 212 male (64.2%) and 118 female (35.8%), participated in the study voluntarily. In the study, the "Leisure Boredom Scale" developed by Iso-Ahola and Weissinger (1990) to measure participants' perceptions of boredom in their leisure, the "UCLA Loneliness Scale" developed by Peplau and Cutrona (1980) to measure loneliness level, and the "Social Media Addiction scale for Adolescents" developed by Eijnden, Lemmens and Valkenburg (2016) to measure the social media addiction level, were used as data collection tools. The convenience sampling method, which is one of the random sampling methods, was used in the sample selection and the face-to-face survey technique was preferred. In the analysis of the obtained data, descriptive statistics via the SPSS package program, Pearson Correlation, and regression analysis of the indirect impact approach based on the Bootstrap method via PROCESS v3.5 macro were performed. As a result, it was observed that leisure boredom had statistically significant effects on social media addiction and loneliness, and social media addiction on loneliness. Besides, regarding the main aim of the research, it was determined that social media addiction had a mediating effect on the relationship between leisure boredom and loneliness. Özet Bu çalışmanın amacı serbest zamanda sıkılma algısı ile yalnızlık arasındaki ilişkide sosyal medya bağımlılığının aracı etkisinin incelenmesidir. Araştırma grubunu İstanbul’da lise düzeyinde öğrenim gören gönüllü olarak katılım sağlayan 212 erkek (%64,2), ve 118 kadın (%35,8) olmak üzere toplam 330 kişi oluşturmaktadır. Abstract:This descriptive study was carried out to examine problematic Internet use among high school students, and its relationship with the students’ family characteristics, loneliness, depression, and social support levels. For this study, 881 students were chosen by simple random sampling method from 8346 high school students in 18 secondary institutions of Edirne, Turkey. Data were collected using Online Cognition Scale, Depression Scale for Children, UCLA Loneliness Scale, and Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale. The study found that younger students, especially males, who used the Internet in the mornings and evenings at home and on their mobile phones exhibited more signs of problematic Internet use. Problematic Internet use was also found to be increased among the students who spent more time on the Internet, showed more signs of depression and loneliness, had more siblings, and whose mothers had higher levels of education. The results of the study indicate training programs should be offered by relevant experts in internet usage.

Abstract:Social media addiction has many negative effects on the mental health of adolescents. In addition, adolescence is among the high-risk groups in terms of social media addiction. Loneliness is an important variable in the emergence of social media addiction in adolescents. In addition, loneliness is considered a risk factor for adolescents' psychological resilience. Although there is a significant relationship between psychological resilience and technology addictions, there is no research examining the mediating role of psychological resilience between loneliness and social media addiction in adolescents. This study aimed to examine the mediating role of resilience in the relationship between loneliness and social media addiction in adolescents. The study was conducted with 786 adolescents aged 11 to 18, including 474 girls (60.3%) and 312 (39.7%) boys. The data of the study were collected using the Social Media Addiction Scale, the UCLA-Loneliness Short Form, and the Psychological Resilience Scale. The mediation analysis results showed that psychological resilience had a partial mediator role in the relationship between loneliness and social media addiction. These results obtained in the study provide important evidence for the potential buffering role of psychological resilience in reducing social media addiction in adolescents with high levels of loneliness. An overall evaluation of the results indicates that psychological resilience interventions for adolescents with high levels of loneliness could reduce their social media addiction and affect their mental health positively.

Abstract:Background In this study, it was aimed to examine digital addiction, loneliness and social dissatisfaction among adolescents studying in Adıyaman, Turkey, and to determine the relationship with each other. Methodology Digital Game Addiction Scale for Children (DGASFC) and Loneliness and Social Dissatisfaction Questionnaire (LSDQ) were administered to 634 middle and high school students. A questionnaire form was used as a data collection tool. Results DGASFC scores and LSDQ scores were found to be higher in males, in high school students, in those whose parents' education level was high school or above, in those whose parents lived separately, in those with good economic status, in those who were younger, and in those who were not restricted by their families. A significant positive correlation was found between DGASFC and LSDQ scores. Conclusions Digital addiction should be followed closely in terms of accompanying disorders or pathologies that predispose to it. In our study, it was found that digital game addiction, loneliness and social dissatisfaction decreased with age. However, this applies separately to middle school and high school groups. Because, despite their older age, high school adolescents have been found to be more digitally dependent, lonely and socially dissatisfied than secondary school students. Contrary to the studies in the literature, the risk of digital addiction, loneliness and social dissatisfaction was found to be low in those with low economic status.

Abstract:Social media has often started to be used as the first source for accessing information. Country agenda, general issues, research, new ideas, entertainment, shopping, instant communication and cooperation are the positive contributions of social media. Excessive use of social media in every aspect of life certainly causes harm. It causes serious psychological deformation, especially on adolescents, whom we call the young group. While social media can increase technical skills in adolescents, it can reduce social skills and communication and even some of the negative effects they encounter in this area can create psychological trauma. While the feeling of inadequacy, comparison and competition lead to psychological problems such as self-confidence and social anxiety; the virtualized perception of beauty poses dangers such as eating disorders in young people. Social media use, which has reached the point of addiction, adds a number of negativities to young people’s lives, such as sleep deprivation, decreased time spent with family and loss of interest in real life. In light of all this, the aim of this research is to examining the social media addiction levels of young adults. The sample of the study consists of 201 university students studying in different departments of a state university in Turkey and whose age range is between 18-30 and more age. “Social media addiction scale - adult form” scale developed by Sahin and Yagcı (2017) was used as a data collection tool in the study, with permission from the developer authors. In the study, the relational screening method, one of the quantitative research methods, was used. As a result, a significant relationship was detected between the variables of young people’s gender, age, daily internet and social media usage and their social media addictions. Abstract:Substance use and addictive disorders are among the most significant public health concerns, particularly during adolescence. The current study aims to investigate internet gaming disorder, social media addiction, and loneliness levels in adolescents and youths with substance use. Methods: The study group consisted of 93 adolescents and youths aged 15–24 who presented to the Alcohol and Substance Addiction Research and Application Center or the Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Diseases outpatient clinic for substance use. Ninety-one healthy volunteers who did not use substances during any period of their lives participated as a control group. The participants fulfilled the Social Media Addiction Scale (SMAS), Internet Gaming Disorder Scale – Short-Form (IGDS9-SF), UCLA Loneliness Scale (UCLA-LS), and Drug Use Disorders Identification Test – Extended (DUDIT-E). Results: The symptoms of internet gaming disorder were significantly lower in the patient group compared with the control group. Although it was not significant, social media addiction was higher in the patient group than in the control group. The experience of loneliness was significantly higher in the patient group than in the control group. A significant negative correlation was found between treatment motivation and loneliness. Conclusions: School guidance teachers should monitor children who do not have friends or are lonely and be aware of the potential for substance use because it can emerge as a method of coping with the feeling of loneliness among adolescents. In future studies, investigating comprehensive factors contributing to different addictive behaviors may help to clarify the co-occurrence.

Abstract:Introduction: The negative effects of post-COVID-19 restrictions have been detected in students' mental well-being due to internet addiction, changing habits, despair and uncertainty. Students' academic success is expected to be affected by social media addiction, loneliness, depression, life satisfaction, problem solving skills and academic self-efficacy factors. This study aimed to determine the level of social media addiction and the effects of these factors on the academic success of university students and define their interactions with each other. Methods: Four hundred nineteen questionnaires were collected between October-December 2022 at Bingöl University, Türkiye. Descriptive statistics, independent t-test, One-Way ANOVA, correlation and multiple linear regression methods were used to analyze data with the help of the SPSS 22 software. Results: Middle level grade (GPA) average (71,17 ± 9,69 out of 100), low level social support from friends and family members (34,6%), spending more than 4 h on social media (42,5%), middle level social media addiction, moderate depression level (51,31%-PHQ > 10), mild loneliness and slight dissatisfaction with life were found among students. Furthermore, high academic self-efficacy, moderate agreement with academic performance and good problem-solving skills were indicated in the survey results. Significant differences, such as higher life satisfaction among males and higher depression among females, were measured. Academic self-efficacy scale, problem solving skills and satisfaction with life had a negative correlation with social media addiction and depression, while a positive correlation with academic performance measures. Problem solving skills, satisfaction with life, fourth class vs. others and living alone vs. others were positive predictors of the academic self-efficacy. Meanwhile, loneliness was a negative predictor of the academic self-efficacy, while higher problem-solving skills and being female were positive factors leading to a higher GPA. Discussion: The fact that the participants were only students from Bingöl University limits the ability to generalize the results. Policymakers could implement social and problem-solving skills training to develop better academic programs and cognitive-behavioral therapy for students' academic success.

Abstract:This study aimed to determine the effects of the events during the COVID-19 epidemic on adolescents' levels of intolerance of uncertainty, internet addiction, happiness, and life satisfaction. Structural Equation Modeling was used in the analysis of the data. Adolescents' internet use increased during the epidemic process. It was found that COVID-19 events increased intolerance of uncertainty, and negatively affected internet addiction and happiness (p < 0.001). In this process, internet addiction and happiness is a mediator (p < 0.001). It is recommended to monitor adolescents' internet use during the COVID-19 process and to provide information about COVID-19.

Abstract:This study aims to examine the relationships between internet addiction and parental attitudes of students in adolescence in terms of some variables. The universe of the research consists of students (9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades) studying at a public school in Karşıyaka district of İzmir province. A total of 386 students participated in the study. The data of the study were obtained by using the "Parent Attitude Scale", "Internet Addiction Scale" and "Personal Information Form". The obtained data were analyzed using the SPSS program. Considering the findings of the study, a significant relationship was found between parental attitudes and internet addiction. Statistically significant relationships were found between internet use, having a romantic relationship, parental attitudes and internet addiction in adolescents before and during school. A positive and low-level significant relationship was found between the protective, democratic and authoritarian parental attitudes perceived by the adolescents and the level of dependency.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: While Internet use makes life easier in many areas, the negative consequences associated with excessive and frequent Internet use increases. Meanwhile, research on the negative psychosocial consequences of frequent and uncontrolled use of social media, which constitutes most of the time spent on the Internet, also draws attention. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between Internet Addiction (IA), Problematic Social Media Use (PSMU), depression, anxiety, and sociodemographic characteristics in a cross-sectional student population.MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 196 Medical Faculty students (62.2% female, mean age 21.33 ± 1.92 y) who completed the Social Media Disorder Scale (SMDS), the Internet Addiction Test (IAT), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD) participated in our study.RESULTS: The results showed that %26.5 participants had moderate IA and PSMU scores (OR: 1.276, %95 CI: 1.187-1.372) and lack of regular sportive activity (OR: 3.003, %95 CI: 1.107-8.144) were risk factors for IA. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that IA was predicted independently by PSMU scores (%49 variances) and anxiety (%6 variances).CONCLUSIONS: The results of our study showed that excessive use of social media and anxiety were significantly associated with IA in young adults. In addition to the contribution of regular sports habits to physical health, better clarification of its relationship with important psychiatric problems such as anxiety and addiction may contribute to addiction prevention programs.

Abstract:Introduction: The literature highlighted that problematic internet use can have detrimental consequences on individuals' well-being. Social media addiction, escapism and coping skills are closely related to problematic internet use. However, no study has currently examined the relationship between problematic internet use and social media use, escapism and coping skills. Method: This multicenter cross-sectional designed study evaluated the relationships between problematic internet use and social media addiction, escapism, and coping skills in 508 adolescents (319 female) aged 14-18 years. In order to collect data, sociodemographic data form, Internet Addiction Scale, Social Media Addiction Scale, Escapism Scale and Kidcope Adolescent Version have been used. First, adolescents who scored ≥50 on the Internet Addiction Test were classified as the problematic internet use group; adolescents who scored <50 were classified as the control group. Then, the relationships between problematic internet use and social media addiction, escapism and coping skills were evaluated. Results: The results showed that problematic internet use was associated with duration of social media use, impairment in social media-related functionality, preferring virtual life, and virtual pleasure, escapism, avoidant and negative coping strategies. Conclusion: These findings may provide an empirical basis for problematic internet use prevention and intervention in adolescence.

Abstract:This study is to analyze in depth the effect of internet use on loneliness and its mechanism of action from the perspective of real-life interpersonal communication. A total of 1385 college students in China voluntarily participated in the survey. The results showed that (1) Loneliness and real-life interpersonal communication were significantly negatively related to online leisure behaviors and positively related to online information behaviors. Online social behavior was significantly negatively correlated with real-life interpersonal communication and insignificantly correlated with loneliness. (2) Online information behavior could indirectly and positively influence loneliness not only through real-life interpersonal communication [0.104, 0.434], but also through online leisure behavior and real-life interpersonal communication [-0.284, -0.057]. The study concluded that online social behavior is an ineffective social method for solving the problem of loneliness. Online information behavior on the one hand will provide support for real-life interpersonal communication and can serve to alleviate feelings of loneliness; On the other hand, online information behavior can induce online leisure behavior, which reduces real-life interpersonal communication and increases college students' loneliness.

Abstract:Introduction Loneliness is a critical issue of adolescents that has grown severe during the last decade. Social media use is often regarded as negative factor of loneliness experience in connection with escapism. At the same time social media is an important part of adolescents' communication sphere. The present study aims to explore positive functions of social media which can help adolescents cope with loneliness. Objectives The present research studies features of loneliness representation in adolescents with different behavior in social media. Methods Multidimensional Inventory of Loneliness Experience; Cognitive Processing of Social Information in Internet Questionnaire; Method of unfinished sentences about loneliness and social media; Questionnaire about social media were used in the study with 44 adolescents, aged from 13 to 18. Results Adolescents have a higher level of loneliness (M = 29.6) than the results in 2013 (M = 17.7) show. Context analysis of unfinished sentences shows that 21% of adolescents have a various representation of loneliness, 71% perceive loneliness as negative. General feel of loneliness tends to show negative correlations with adequate perception of information in social media (k = - 0.317; p = 0.038). Negative attitude to loneliness is negatively correlated with interpretation adequacy of social media content (k=-0.568, p<0,001). Adolescents with low levels of holistic social media perceptions have higher levels of loneliness. Use of social media can reduce feelings of loneliness (p = 0.002). Conclusions Social media expand adolescents' representation of loneliness. Productive use of social media can help adolescent cope with loneliness. Disclosure No significant relationships.

Abstract:PURPOSE: This study was aimed to investigate the relationship between smartphone addiction, loneliness, and depression in adolescents.DESIGN AND METHODS: This study was designed in a correlational-cross-sectional-descriptive model and was conducted with 1041 adolescents attending high schools in a provincial center in Eastern Turkey. The data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a personal information form, Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version for Adolescents, UCLA Loneliness Scale, and Kutcher Adolescent Depression Scale.RESULTS: The average scores for smartphone addiction were found to be higher among females, individuals with low academic success, and those with a high-income level. Similarly, the average scores for loneliness were higher among individuals residing in broken families and those with parents who have limited literacy. Additionally, the mean scores for depression were higher among individuals with low academic success and those with a high-income level. Furthermore, a significant positive correlation was observed between the duration of smartphone use and levels of smartphone addiction, loneliness, and depression.CONCLUSION: Smartphone addiction, loneliness, and depression were found to be prevalent above the moderate level in adolescents. Additionally, a significant positive correlation was observed between the depression and loneliness scores of adolescents.PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Pediatric and school nurses should assess children's phone use. Nurses are well-positioned to establish a follow-up program aimed at monitoring adolescents' efforts in managing smartphone use, offering continuous support, and providing guidance when necessary. The implementation of such programs enables prompt intervention in addressing any arising issues.
