Abstract:This paper presents a novel sensing methodology with an unscented Kalman-based fusion algorithm for attitude estimation,using inexpensive MEMs gyroscopes,sun sensor and magnetometer.Considering the potential failure mode,the back-up filter algorithm using only magnetometer is proposed.Three-component modified Rodrigues parameters are used to describe attitude vector,which avoids the singularity of the covariance matrix when using unit quaternion in attitude determination.Using the ground test of gyro drift data,hardware-in-loop simulation shows that the proposed methodology can obtain fine attitude estimation,even only magnetometer is available,the back-up filter can still meets the requirements of the ordinary mission.The work shows profound meaning in the engineering application.This paper can be seen as a positive exploration of low precision MEMS sensors application to low cost pico-satellite.

Abstract:The Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS) provides real-time carrier attitude and heading data. Integration of low-cost, low-power Micro Electromechanical System (MEMS) inertial sensors has expanded application possibilities. To address issues like low accuracy and sensor drift, this paper proposes a sensor redundancy technique. It forms an array of 32 inertial measurement units (IMUs) combining gyroscopes and accelerometers. Through differential and mean fusion, this array is virtualized into a stable, reliable, high-precision IMU. A magnetometer is added to the IMU array, and an IMU attitude measurement board is designed based on established principles. The comparison experiments with other commercial attitude measurement boards showed that the IMU attitude measurement board was more suitable for attitude measurement in dynamic environments.

Abstract:In order to effectively reduce the volume, mass and cost of the attitude measurement unit (AMU) of the satellite, as well as to ensure that the reliability of the whole system is proper, this paper presents a hardware design method of AMU based on multiple MEMS gyroscopes. Using the modular design method, the scalability of system and the interchangeability between modules are effectively improved. In order to realize the data fusion between MEMS gyroscopes, a federated Kalman Filter based on the time series model is designed. The test result on a single axis air-bearing table shows that the designed AMU works stably, and it can obtain angular rate measurement data with high accuracy.
Low Cost Attitude Determination System for Accelerated Rigid Bodies

Abstract:Translational acceleration may affect accelerometer output and will result in performance reduction of accelerometer and magnetometer based attitude determination system. To compensate for the acceleration effect, the GPS-derived acceleration was introduced to correct the gravity field vector. An iterative least square attitude estimator was developped to determine the MRPs attitude from the gravity field and magnetic field vector observations. The attitude was then fused with the measurements of rate gyros using complementary filter. The experimental results have shown that the proposed attitude determination system can improve the measurement accuracy markedly during maneuvers, the measurement accuracy achieves 3°.

Abstract:To provide a long-time reliable orientation, sensor fusion technologies are widely used to integrate available inertial sensors for the low-cost orientation estimation. In this paper, a novel dual-linear Kalman filter was designed for a multi-sensor system integrating MEMS gyros, an accelerometer, and a magnetometer. The proposed filter precludes the impacts of magnetic disturbances on the pitch and roll which the heading is subjected to. The filter can achieve robust orientation estimation for different statistical models of the sensors. The root mean square errors (RMSE) of the estimated attitude angles are reduced by 30.6% under magnetic disturbances. Owing to the reduction of system complexity achieved by smaller matrix operations, the mean total time consumption is reduced by 23.8%. Meanwhile, the separated filter offers greater flexibility for the system configuration, as it is possible to switch on or off the second stage filter to include or exclude the magnetometer compensation for the heading. Online experiments were performed on the homemade miniature orientation determination system (MODS) with the turntable. The average RMSE of estimated orientation are less than 0.4° and 1° during the static and low-dynamic tests, respectively. More realistic tests on two-wheel self-balancing vehicle driving and indoor pedestrian walking were carried out to evaluate the performance of the designed MODS when high accelerations and angular rates were introduced. Test results demonstrate that the MODS is applicable for the orientation estimation under various dynamic conditions. This paper provides a feasible alternative for low-cost orientation determination.

Abstract:The technology innovations and adoptions outbreaks in the field of agriculture for the ease of forming and productivity improvement. Particularly, drones usage in this sector is very necessary for several activities like spraying pesticides and monitoring the crop growth all over the farm without human intervention. Earlier, the rules of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Sheldon the use of drones for the form fields. Now, the FAA liberalized their guidelines in order to encourage the technology to be part of the farming. Usually, drones should be operated at a specific altitude and thedrones flying above 130m from the ground level having security and privacy concerns. Hence, in order measure altitude of the drone, Micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) based Altimetry pressure sensors usually preferred in the drone, but in order to decrease the payload of the drone, a miniaturized MEMS based altimetry pressure sensor with high figure of merit design are highly need. In this paper, an attempt is made to design an Edge Centric Polycrystalline Piezoresistive MEMS(ECPP-MEMS) pressure sensor of 1000μm x 1000μm square structure, 1μm membrane thickness and X shaped strain gauge to achieve the sensitivity of 50mV/bar. This model should support to measure the pressure at low altitude ( < 50m above sea level) in the pressure range of 0.1-1 bar at ambient temperature.

Abstract:Low-cost MEMS can experience large positioning errors in very short time due to its own limitations.To overcome the shortcome,modern information fusion technology is developed to increase the attitude measuring precision.The magnetic field and gravity field are used as attitude reference vectors.Extended Kalman Filter(EKF)is introduced to integrated attitude data from different sources.The attitude measuring system is constructed based on MIMU and magnetometer.The simulations and experimental results indicate that the static error of three attitude angles is less than 0.35°,while the dynamic heading error is less than 3°.The measuring system can effectively improve the system precision and stability.

Abstract:Aiming at the requirement of attitude information module with high precision, small size and low power consumption for the control of miniature UAV, a practical attitude estimation algorithm based on the micro-electro-mechanical sensor is proposed in this paper, which realizes the accurate estimation of the attitude of the UAV under the condition of low acceleration. A low-cost MEMS gyroscope, accelerometer, and magnetometer are used in the system. The Euler angle is obtained by the state observer method based on Direction Cosine Matrix (DCM) which can be got by fusing the sensor data. Firstly, based on the basic idea of TRIAD algorithm, a method to determine the attitude rotation matrix by accelerometer and magnetometric measurement is proposed. Compared with the traditional method, this method does not have to calculate the inverse of the matrix. Secondly, a state observer is intended to estimate the attitude of the system. The state observer doesn't have to observe the bias of the gyroscope, but still ensures the convergence of the Euler angle. Finally, the simulation based on the actual sampling data of the MEMS sensor shows that the output of the state observer designed in this paper still has high accuracy and good dynamic characteristics under the condition of gyroscope noise and bias.

Abstract:The main errors of MEMS accelerometers are misalignments of their sensitivity axes, thermal and long-term drifts, imprecise factory calibration, and aging phenomena. In order to reduce these errors, a two-axial tilt sensor comprising a triaxial MEMS accelerometer, an aligning unit, and solid cubic housing was built. By means of the aligning unit it was possible to align the orientation of the accelerometer sensitive axes with respect to the housing with an accuracy of 0.03°. Owing to the housing, the sensor could be easily and quickly recalibrated, and thus errors such as thermal and long-term drifts as well as effects of aging were eliminated. Moreover, errors due to local and temporal variations of the gravitational acceleration can be compensated for. Procedures for calibrating and aligning the accelerometer are described. Values of thermal and long-term drifts of the tested sensor, resulting in tilt errors of even 0.4°, are presented. Application of the sensor for monitoring elevated loads is discussed.

Abstract:The paper deals with performance enhancement of low-cost, consumer-grade inertial sensors realized by means of Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology. Focusing their attention on the reduction of bias instability and random walk-driven drift of cost-effective MEMS accelerometers and gyroscopes, the authors hereinafter propose a suitable method, based on a redundant configuration and complemented with a proper measurement procedure, to improve the performance of low-cost, consumer-grade MEMS sensors. The performance of the method is assessed by means of an adequate prototype and compared with that assured by a commercial, expensive, tactical-grade MEMS inertial measurement unit, taken as reference. Obtained results highlight the promising reliability and efficacy of the method in estimating position, velocity, and attitude of vehicles; in particular, bias instability and random walk reduction greater than 25% is, in fact, experienced. Moreover, differences as low as 0.025 rad and 0.89 m are obtained when comparing position and attitude estimates provided by the prototype and those granted by the tactical-grade MEMS IMU.

Abstract:According to the relationship among pressure,temperature and altitude,an altimeter system with MS5534B based on MEMS was designed.MS5534B is a digital pressure sensor produced by Intersema.The function of SPI was simulated using the I/O in MSP430F449,which can make MSP430F449 to receive data from MS5534B.Thereafter it can transfer the data which have been processed to the LCD,also it can return the data to the control computer through RS232.The light weight,low power,high precision altimeter was tested in the standard atmospheric condition.The altimeter has a relative altitude average standard deviation of 0.2 m and a linearity of 0.999 9.

Abstract:In this paper, a wireless tilt measurement system of high resolution is proposed and demonstrated using multiple MEMS (Micro-electromechanical Systems) accelerometers. The measurement system is mainly composed of MEMS accelerometers as sensing unit, a MCU (Micro Controller Unit), wireless transceivers, battery and a PC terminal. Three MEMS accelerometers are purposely located with specific orientations and the system output is determined from the accelerometer that is most sensitive in the tilting range of the object under testing. The raw measured signal collected by the MCU is processed using Kalman Filter (KF) and the analyzed data is transmitted to the PC terminal by a wireless module. The effect of different Imo' parameters are analyzed using the Allan variance. After eliminating the accelerometers' installation errors, the measuring resolution of system is found to be 0.02 in the whole range from 0 to 360. In the step test of tilting back and forth, it is found that the absolute measurement error is less than 0.004 for the step change of 0.05. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The modular platform system in this paper consists of a series of modularized MEMS subsystems, including central control unit, M EMS attitude measurement unit, environment unit, flight measurement and control unit, time control unit, impact vibration measurement unit and other auxiliary modular units. The key of the system is the MEMS attitude measurement unit, which can resolve the real time attitude information of the carrier. The system platform chooses different sensors and units according to various circumstances and implements data collection, fusion and solution through the central processing module. By means of carrying distinct units, system platform can constitute many measurement control systems, such as Micro wireless attitude determination system, MAV flight data recorder, MAV flight control system and PHM (prognostic and health management). With application of MEMS, the system in this paper is high-efficient, low-weighted, simple-structured, high-reliable and even can respond in a short time. In view of these merits, the system can be applied in many kinds of attitude measurement and control system.
A Low-Cost Chamber Prototype for Automatic Thermal Analysis of MEMS IMU Sensors in Tilt Measurements Perspective

Abstract:In this work, a low-cost, open-source and replicable system prototype for thermal analysis of low-cost Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors in tilt measurement perspective is presented and tested. The system is formed of a 3D printed frame, a thermal cell consisting in a Peltier element mounted over a heat sink, and a control and power system. The frame is designed to allow the independent biaxial tilting of the thermal cell through two servomotors. The control board is formed by an Arduino® and a self-made board including a power drive for controlling the thermal unit and servomotors. We tested the chamber analyzing the behavior of multiple MEMS IMU onboard accelerometers suitable for measuring tilt. Our results underline the variability of the thermal behavior of the sensors, also for different sensor boards of the same model, and consequently the need for the adoption of a thermal compensation strategy based on thermal analysis results. These data suggesting the need for the analysis of the thermal behavior of MEMS-based sensors, indicate the potential of our system in making low-cost sensors suitable in medium-to-high precision monitoring applications.

Abstract:In this paper a new method for attitude estimation using low-cost MEMS inertial sensors is developed, in order to obtain accurate attitude parameters when other external sensors such as magnetometer and GPS are limited in operation. The method is based on specific rotation of the inertial measurement unit independent from rigid body motion. An algorithm is developed by incorporating a nonlinear observer in order to fusing measurements from both the gyroscope and the accelerometers. The algorithm provides bias estimation of the gyroscope and better estimation results. Experiments validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) technology offers sensors with lower cost, smaller size, lower power consumption. In this paper, a kind of low cost motion-sensing system based MEMS sensors is developed. The objective of the design is low cost, small volume and light weight in order to be used in many fields. The constituting principle of the system is described. Algorithms and hardware of the system are researched. And the definition of coordinate, calculation of pose angle, transform of acceleration and calculation of the velocities and displacement of the moving object are presented with corresponding mathematics model and algorithms. The experiments are carried out in principle and results are given. It is proved that the low cost motion-sensing system is effective and correct.
Improved Resolution and Cost Performance of Low-Cost MEMS Seismic Sensor through Parallel Acquisition

Abstract:In earthquake monitoring, an important aspect of the operational effect of earthquake intensity rapid reporting and earthquake early warning networks depends on the density and performance of the deployed seismic sensors. To improve the resolution of seismic sensors as much as possible while keeping costs low, in this article the use of multiple low-cost and low-resolution digital MEMS accelerometers is proposed to increase the resolution through the correlation average method. In addition, a cost-effective MEMS seismic sensor is developed. With ARM and Linux embedded computer technology, this instrument can cyclically store the continuous collected data on a built-in large-capacity SD card for approximately 12 months. With its real-time seismic data processing algorithm, this instrument is able to automatically identify seismic events and calculate ground motion parameters. Moreover, the instrument is easy to install in a variety of ground or building conditions. The results show that the RMS noise of the instrument is reduced from 0.096 cm/s2 with a single MEMS accelerometer to 0.034 cm/s2 in a bandwidth of 0.1-20 Hz by using the correlation average method of eight low-cost MEMS accelerometers. The dynamic range reaches more than 90 dB, the amplitude-frequency response of its input and output within -3 dB is DC -80 Hz, and the linearity is better than 0.47%. In the records from our instrument, earthquakes with magnitudes between M2.2 and M5.1 and distances from the epicenter shorter than 200 km have a relatively high SNR, and are more visible than they were prior to the joint averaging.

Abstract:To solve the low precision and poor anti-interference of a single Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) inertial sensor, this paper proposes a high-precision attitude estimation system based on differential Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) array. Based on the output characteristics of a single MEMS inertial sensor, the output performances of the differential IMU array are analyzed, which show effectively improvements for the bias stability and random noise compared to a single MEMS inertial sensor. Moreover, the attitude estimation algorithms based on the Kalman filter and complementary filter are used to fuse data from sensors and calculate the attitude. The experimental results show that the error of angular rate of the differential IMU array is reduced by 79.7% and the standard deviation of the attitude measurement results is reduced by about 75% compared with that of a single sensor in both static state and dynamic state. The estimated absolutely roll angle and pitch angle errors are within 0.4° in dynamic state which are the state-of-the-arts results to date. This study can be effectively used to the smart and wearable devices and industrial automation in the emerging areas.
