Abstract:The ecological health of rivers has often been threatened in urbanized catchments due to the expansion of industrial activities and the population growth. Khorramabad River which flows through Khorramabad city, west of Iran, is an example of such settings. The river water is used for agricultural purposes downstream. In this study, the effect of Khorramabad city on heavy metal and metalloid (Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cr, and As) loads in Khorramabad River sediments was investigated. To evaluate sediment pollution and potential adverse biological effects, surface sediment samples were collected at selected locations along the river and were characterized for their geochemical properties. Contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI), and ecological risk assessment (RI) were calculated. Also, sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) were used to screen contaminants of concern in the study area. The results showed that sediments were moderately polluted, with stations located in more densely populated areas showing higher pollution indicators. Copper, Zn, and Pb sources could be attributed to urban wastewater, whereas Ni, Cr, and As had both natural and anthropogenic sources. Moreover, ecological risk assessments showed that sediments could be classified in the category of low risk. The results of the present study showed the effect of anthropogenic activities on heavy metal loads of the river sediments and these findings can be used to mitigate potential impacts on the environment and human health.

Abstract:The present document is intended to fill the knowledge gap on spatiotemporal variation of suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentration and composition by collecting samples from 26 stations during two contrasting seasons of summer and winter. The horizontal distribution of surface SPM is characterized by hotspots (up to 4.0 mg/l) along the river estuaries which sharply declined to <1 mg/l in the offshore region. The average SPM concentration for surface, 25 m, and near-bottom decreased from summer to winter by a factor of 1.1, 1.3, and 1.7, respectively. In the offshore region, the particle composition was dominated by particulate organic matter which accounted for 66 % of bulk SPM. The concentration of opaline silica increased from summer to winter presumably from the bloom of diatoms. The concentration of particulate trace elements in winter decreased in the order of Fe ≫ Ba > Mn ≈ Zn > Ni ≈ Cr ≫ Pb > Cd. The non-crustal portion is the predominant fraction for most trace metals and shows enrichment relative to the upper continental crust, local soil background, and deposited dust that is highest for Cd and lowest for Mn.
Comparison of heavy metals pollution in coastal sediments of Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island and Hormuz-Lark, Persian Gulf

Abstract:In order to determine the level of heavy metals (HMs) pollution (Pb, Cd, Ni, V and Cr) in the sediments of the coastal waters of Hormozgan province, 45 sediment samples were collected from Bandar Abbas beach (7 stations), Qeshm Island (5 stations) and between Hormuz-Lark (3 stations) in 2022. The concentration of HMs in sediments was measured by atomic absorption. The results showed that the concentration of V, Ni and Cr metals in the sediments of Bandar Abbas is higher than the other two studied areas, and the concentration of Cd in the sediments of Qeshm Island and Pb in the sediments of Hormuz-Lark was higher. The average concentration of studied metals is as follows: Cr > Ni > V > Pb > Cd. The degree of contamination of Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island was in moderate degree of contamination and Hormuz-Lark sediments were in low degree of contamination. The average ecological risk index is as follows: Qeshm Island > Bandar Abbas > Hormuz-Lark. The average enrichment factor of the studied metals was the highest in Qeshm Island, Bandar Abbas and Hormuz-Lark islands, respectively. The highest average enrichment factor in the studied areas was related to Ni and Cr. Various industrial pollutant sources and municipal sewage of Qeshm and Bandar Abbas in the vicinity of the sampling stations have been the cause of the high concentration of the studied metals as well as pollution indicators. Based on sustainable development, in order to control the pollution of HMs in the sediments, the contaminant sources should be controlled and managed.

Comprehensive monitoring of contamination and ecological-health risk assessment of potentially harmful elements in surface water of Maroon-Jarahi sub-basin of the Persian Gulf, Iran

Abstract:The increase in heavy metal concentration in water bodies due to rapid industrial and socio-economic development significantly threatens ecological and human health. This study evaluated metal pollution and related risks to ecology and human health in the Maroon-Jarahi river sub-basin in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea basin, southwest Iran, using various indicators. A total of 70 water samples were taken from the sampling sites in the Maroon, Allah, and Jarahi sub-basins and analyzed for nine heavy metals. According to the results, the mean concentration of metals in the sampling locations across the entire sub-basin of Maroon-Jarahi was observed as follows Iron (528.22 µg/L), zinc (292.62 µg/L), manganese (56.47 µg/L), copper (36.23 µg/L), chromium (11.78 µg/L), arsenic (7.09 µg/L), lead (3.43 µg/L), nickel (3.23 µg/L), and cadmium (1.38 µg/L). Most of the metals were detected at the highest concentration in the sub-basin of the Jarahi River. The Water Quality Index (WQI) index in the basin varied from 18.74 to 22.88, indicating well to excellent quality. However, the investigation of the pollution status at the monitoring stations, based on the classification of Degree of Contamination (CD) and Heavy Metal Pollution Index (HPI) indices, revealed that they are in the category of relatively high pollution (16 < CD < 32) to very high (32 ≤ CD), and in the low pollution category (HPI < 15) to high pollution (HPI < 30), respectively. According to the three sub-basins, the highest amount of WQI, HPI, and Cd was observed in the stations located in the sub-basins of the Jarahi River. The calculation of Heavy Metal Evaluation Index (HEI) also indicated that only 10% of the monitoring stations are in moderate pollution (10 < HEI < 20), while in other monitoring stations the HEI level is less than 10. The Potential ecological risk factors ( E r i ) of an individual metal was obtained as follows: Cd (173.70) > As (131.99) > Zn (57.52) > Cu (55.39) > Ni (48.98) > Cr (21.57) > Pb (0.71), revealing that Cd and As are the main elements responsible for creating ecological risk in the studied area. The Maroon-Jarahi watershed included areas with ecological risks that ranged from low (PERI ≤ 150) to very high (PERI ≥ 600). HI and ILCR health indicators indicated that consumption and long-term contact with river water in the study area can cause potential risks to human health, especially children. Moreover, the findings, the highest level of pollution and health risk for both children and adults, considering both exposure routes, occurred in the Jarahi River sub-basin, suggesting that those who live in the vicinity of the Jarahi River are likely to face more adverse health effects. In addition, the findings of the evaluation of the relationship between land use patterns and water quality in the studied basin showed that agricultural lands acts as a main source of pollutants, but forest lands play an important role in the deposition of pollutants and the protection of water quality at the basin scale. In general, the results of pollution indicators, risk assessment, and statistical techniques suggest that the lower sub-basin, the Jarahi area, and the Shadegan wetland are the most polluted areas in the investigated sub-basin due to excessive discharge of agricultural runoff, industrialization, and rapid urbanization. Thus, special measures should be considered to reduce the risks of HMs pollution in the sub-basin of the Maroon-Jarahi watershed, especially its downstream and the impact of agricultural land use on water quality should be taken into consideration in basin management plans.

Abstract:Sungun sulfidic copper mine, with high potential to produce acid mine drainage, is located at northwest of Iran in the East Azerbaijan Province. To investigate the spatial distribution and vertical changes of heavy metals in alluvial deposits of this mine, sampling was conducted in two stages. Samples were collected from the surface and vertical profile of the river bed alluvium and also the waste dump. The sediment samples were analyzed for Cu, Zn, Mn, Cd and Al. Waste rocks samples were analyzed for Cu, Al, Cd, Mn, Zn, Mo, Fe, Pb, As, Ag, Hg, Na, Ca, K and Mg. Pollution indexes revealed that the most polluted sample was the one collected from Pakhir valley and Cu has the main role in the pollution of sediments. Comparison of metal concentrations in the sediment and water samples showed that there is almost a direct relationship between their concentrations. The highest concentration of heavy metals was detected in the upper 50 cm of ground surface and decreases downward in the sediment. Heavy metals less integrate in coarse grains due to the sediment texture and so leach to lower horizons without high amounts of adsorption in upper layers. HYDRUS-1D model was employed to simulate copper movement in the vertical profiles. Four scenarios including base case scenario, non-continuous source scenario, pulse source scenario and the worst case scenario were run to study the behavior of the pollutant in vertical transport through Pakhir alluvial sediments. After doubling the pollutant concentration, the plum reaches to the bottom of the profile faster than non-continuous source and pulse source scenarios. Also, the velocity of pollution movement in non-continuous source scenario is less than continuous scenario. Due to the sediment grain size, the transport velocity in all scenarios is fast and contamination in just a few hours can move several meters from the ground surface.

Abstract:The Caspian Sea is exposed to numerous anthropogenic activities such as untreated wastewater discharge and agricultural activities which increased trace metals contamination. The current study was employed to assess the distribution, ecological risk assessment, and source identification of some trace metals in 125 samples of surface sediments and soil from 6 distinctive sections of Babolsar in the coastal line of the Caspian Sea. The sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) and individual risk assessment indices including enrichment factor (EF), geo-accumulation index (Igeo), contamination factor (Cf), and potential risk factor (Er) suggested a hazardous level of Cd and Cr contamination. There was a relatively high level of Pb contamination while other studied trace metals were at a low contamination level. Cumulative risk indices such as modified degree of contamination (mCD), pollution load index (PLI), and the potential ecological risk index (RI) identified that the river, wetland, and farmland sites were more contaminated compared to the Caspian Sea samples which exhibited a moderate level of contamination. The lowest level of contamination was recorded in the coastline and river delta sites. Two analytical methods including Pearson's correlation coefficient and multivariate clustering dendrogram were also applied to identify the potential sources of contamination. The results suggested that wastewaters, nitrogen, and phosphate fertilizers were the main anthropogenic source of Cd, Co, Pb, and Ni while fossil fuels and transportation activities were the predominant sources of anthropogenic Cu, V, and Zn contamination. Further studies about trace metals risk assessment and fractionation could contribute to more effective decisions for reducing the anthropogenic trace metal pollution in the Caspian Sea.

Abstract:Background Heavy metals and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) are important pollutants in the aquatic ecosystem, and their long-term resistance, bio-accumulation, and bio-magnification during the food chain may cause adverse ecological and health risks. Methods In here, the distribution and risk assessment of six heavy metals Cd, Pb, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cr, and TPHs were performed in the sediments of 32 regions situated in two mangroves (Tiab and Azini estuaries, Hara Mangrove forest protected area) and coral habitats (Larak and Hengam Islands) in Northeast of the Persian Gulf during 2020 to 2021. An atomic absorption device was used to determine the concentrations of heavy metals. Ecological risk of heavy metals is assessed through indices contamination factor (CF), contamination degree (CD), modified contamination degree (MCD), pollution load index (PLI), potential ecological risk index (PERI), and geoaccumulation index (Igeo). The spatial distribution of heavy metals was mapped through the inverse distance weighting (IDW) method in ArcMap. Results The concentration of heavy metals indicated significant differences in spatial distribution. The maximum concentration of Cd 1.64±0.001, Cr 18.41±0.41 and Cu 40.5 ± 0.28 μg/g was observed at the regions situated in the Hara Mangrove forest protected area. Azini estuary had the maximum value of Zn 94.61±30.74 and TPHs 4.47±1.93 μg/g and finally, the highest value of concentration Ni 135.22 ± 1.85 μg/g and Pb 17.87±2.17 g/gμ was found in Tiab estuary. The studied regions in the Tiab estuary and Hara Mangrove forest protected area were more contaminated than others and had considerable risks of Ni and Cd. Average ecological indices indicated the sediments of these areas especially Tiab, Hara Mangrove forest protected area, and Azini are moderately to considerably contaminated with Cd and Ni. Tiab was identified as the most contaminated area and all stations except Hengam Island were exposed to considerable ecological risks. Cadmium was found to be the riskiest heavy metal in the investigated region. The distribution of TPHs indicated there is no pollution of TPHs in the region. In all studied stations, the PELq (Toxicity of TPHs) and CF values showed the absence of potential risks of TPHs in sediments. Conclusions The findings indicated considerable contamination of Cd and Ni in the mangrove areas, especially Tiab, and it seems necessary to identify, manage, and control possible sources of contamination.

Abstract:Concentrations of cadmium, lead, nickel and vanadium were determined in water, surficial sediments and the muscle of three demersal fish species (Epinephelus coioides, Psettodes erumei and Solea elongate) from 15 sampling sites in the northern part of Persian Gulf. Concentrations of the elements were determined using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer. There were no significant differences among the sampling sites in Cd and Pb levels in the sediments. The highest concentrations of Ni and V in sediments were found near the southern coast of Qeshm Iland and Bandar Lengeh. Concentrations of Cd, Pb and Ni in the sediments were notably higher than global baseline values. Nearly in all cases the element concentrations in the sediments were considerably greater than RSA (ROPME Sea Area) and the ERL (Effects Range Low) guidelines. Significant differences among the sampling sites could be found for concentrations of all the four metals in water. The mean Ni, Pb and Cd levels in the water samples were relatively higher than those in some other regions of the Persian Gulf. Except few cases, the mean concentrations of the elements in muscle of the selected fish species were markedly below the international guidelines for human consumption.

Abstract:Present work aims to document the distribution and metal contamination in the coastal sediments of the Dammam Al-Jubail area, Saudi Arabian Gulf. Twenty-six samples were collected for Al, V, Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Hg, Sr, As, Fe, Co and Ni analysis. Results of enrichment factor indicated that Sr, Cd, Cu, Hg, V, As, Ni, Cr and Zn gave enrichment factors higher than 2 (98.87, 40.28, 33.20, 27.87, 26.11, 14.10, 6.15, 3.72 and 2.62 respectively) implying anthropogenic sources, while Pb, Mn and Al have very low background level (1.37, 0.71, 0.124 respectively), probably originated from natural sources. Average concentrations of Sr, V, Hg, Cd and As were mostly higher than those from the background shale and the earth crust, the Caspian Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the sediment quality guidelines, the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aqaba and the Gulf of Oman. The higher levels of the studied metals are mostly related samples with high Al and TOM content, as well as the visible anthropogenic pollutants along the studied coastline. The most recorded anthropogenic pollutants were sewage effluent, landfilling due to coastal infrastructure development, oil spills, petrochemical industries and desalination plants in Al-Jubail industrial city.
Assessment of heavy metal enrichment in the offshore fine-grained sediments of the Caspian Sea

Abstract:Sampling of the offshore seabed sediments of southwestern part of the Caspian Sea was carried out by gravity corer in order to study heavy metal concentration and the physicochemical factors controlling their distribution in the fine-grained fraction. The grain size distribution, amount, and type of clay minerals, total organic carbon (TOC) content, and Eh–pH of the sediments were determined. The average concentrations of the heavy metals in ppm are Mn (563), Cu (207.5), Sr (187), Zn (94), Pb (26.3), Ni (14.5), Co (11.5), Cd (2.56), and Ag (1.04) in their order of abundances. Co and Zn mostly indicate increase in silt-size fraction of the sediments suggesting their probable detrital provenance but the Mn, Ni, Cu, Sr, Pb, Cd, and Ag concentrations show a similar trend to distribution of the clay-size fraction. The concentrations of Mn, Co, and Cd increase with increase in the TOC content but the Cu, Pb, Ni, Ag, and Sr concentrations decrease with increase of the TOC content. The amounts of Zn, Cu, Sr, Pb, Cd, and Ag increase with increase in the CaCO3 content. The calculated enrichment factor indicates that the sediments are very strong to extremely enriched in Ag, significantly enriched in Cu and Cd, and depleted to mineral for Pb, Sr, Co, Ni, and Zn. Variations of the Cu, Sr, Cd, Ag, and Pb concentrations are similar to the clay and CaCO3 distributions.

Abstract:The present study aimed to evaluate the sources of pollution and the potential human and ecological risks of hazardous elements (HEs) in 40 hotspot sites of the agricultural soil around the Arvand River, Iran. The mean concentrations of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Hg were measured to be 7.2, 0.8, 14.0, 67.9, 69.5, 63.0, 296, and 0.66 (mg kg−1), respectively. With the exception of Ni, the mean concentrations of all the elements were found to be higher than those in the background. The spatial distribution of HEs in the study area indicated an increasing trend of contamination from the north to the south. Pb, Zn, and Hg were the most enriched elements, resulting in a high pollution load. Moreover, the agricultural soil of the study area was threatened by a very high ecological risk due to the contribution of Hg, Cd, and Pb. Multivariate statistical analyses determined that the pollution sources are specified by the oil refinery emissions and effluents, irrigation with polluted water, fertilizers, dust storms, and airport emissions. The carcinogenic risk of HEs in both adults and children revealed an acceptable level; however, children faced a great chance of non-carcinogenic risk. The results provide a scientific basis for monitoring HEs and managing health risks via effective methods in the agricultural areas of the Arvand River basin.

Abstract:The significant increase in the pollution of heavy metals and organic pollutants, their stable nature, and their high toxicity are gradually becoming a global crisis. In a recent study, a comprehensive assessment of the spatial distribution of heavy metals and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs), as well as an assessment of their ecological risks in the sediments of 32 stations located in commercial and industrial areas (Mainly focusing on petrochemical and power industries, desalination plants and transit Ports) of Hormozgan province (East and West of Jask, Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, and Bandar Lengeh) was performed during 2021–2022. The sediment samples were digested with HNO 3 , HCl and HF solvents. The concentration of heavy metals was determined with furnace and flame systems of atomic absorption spectrometer. The concentration of heavy metals showed significant spatial changes between stations. The ecological assessment indices between the regions indicated that the stations located in Shahid Bahonar Port, Suru Beach, and Khor gorsouzuan had a higher intensity of pollution than other places and significant risks of pollution, especially in terms of Cr and Ni. The average contamination degree (CD) (14.89), modified contamination degree (MCD) (2.48), pollution load index (PLI) (2.32), and potential ecological risk index (PERI) (100.30) showed the sediments in the area of Shahid Bahonar Port, Suru beach and Khor gorsouzuan, experience significant to high levels of pollution, especially Cr and Ni. Using contamination factor (CF) and Geoaccumulation index (Igeo), Cr was considered the most dangerous metal in the studied areas. Based on the global classification of marine sediment quality for the concentrations of TPHs, the sediments of the studied stations were classified as non-polluted to low pollution. In all regions, indices of the PELq (General toxicity) and CF (Contamination factor) were much lower than 0.1 and 1 respectively, showing the absence of adverse biological effects caused by TPHs in sediments. It is necessary to consider comprehensive and impressive strategies to control and reduce pollution of heavy metals, especially in the areas of Shahid Bahonar Port, Suru Beach, and Khor gorsouzuan, so that the sources of this pollution are required to be identified and managed.

Ecological Risks Attributed to the Heavy Metals Pollution of Dust Settled on the Surface of Coastal Roads along the Persian Gulf

Abstract:Introduction: Heavy metals (HMs) accumulated in the road dust may be transferred to the surrounding land and water bodies and pose ecological risks. Hence, such pollution should be considered, especially in coastal roads. This study focuses on the HMs pollution of dust settled on the surface of coastal roads along the Persian Gulf in Bandar Abbas city. Materials and Methods: In this study, road dust samples were collected from 13 points in coastal roads and analyzed by ICP-OES for the measurement of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Pb. Based on the HMs contents of dust, pollution, and ecological risk indices, including contamination factor (CF), modified pollution index (MPI), and modified ecological risk index (MRI) were calculated. Results: Among the studied HMs, Cu (4.73) showed the highest CF value. The levels of MPI showed that the road dust was strongly polluted by HMs (4.02), but it was mainly contributed by a low toxic metal (Cu). Therefore, the mean value of MRI was 132.3, indicating the low ecological risk of such pollution. Note that the MRI value was > 150 in some sampling points, indicating moderate ecological risk. Conclusion: This study showed that the road dust along the Persian Gulf coastline is polluted to different levels of the studied HMs and may pose various levels of ecological risks. The current level of HMs pollution in the study area was not significantly high. However, high pollution levels in the west roads should not be overlooked.
Spatio-Temporal Variations of Discharge and Sediment in Rivers Flowing into the Anzali Lagoon

Abstract:In the last few years, trend identification has become an important issue in hydrological time-series analyses; it is also a difficult task, due to the variety of models and the impact of climate change on the river flow regime. Due to the vital importance of the Anzali Lagoon to the environment of the region, and the threat to its health caused by the volume or amount of inlet sediments, we decided to study the changes in flow and sediment in the rivers flowing into the Anzali Lagoon. For the present study, the long-term monthly, seasonal, and annual sediment and discharge data of seven stations were obtained during the period 1985–2019. According to the available information, the trend of sediment load variation was investigated at different time scales. In this study, the Mann–Kendall statistical test, the double-mass curve, and performance fitting were used to assess the seasonal and annual trends in sediment and river flow. The results showed that at Aghamahale station, the low relationship between discharge and sediment compared with that at other stations was due to the low slope and constant water of the Behmbar River, which caused the sediments to settle and decreased their carrying rate. Moreover, Nokhaleh station had the largest share of sediment transfer to the lagoon during 2002–2012. Sediment details also show that the highest amount of sediment in all stations occurred in non-crop seasons—i.e., from October to January—and was directly dependent on the amount of rainfall in these areas. The results of the sediment analysis also indicate that the discharge and the subsequent sediment loads from upstream to downstream were high over the summer. Furthermore, the rivers downstream demonstrated springtime peaks in the sediment loads and discharge, probably owing to snow melting.

Abstract:River toxic metal (TM) pollution is a serious challenge of present-day Iran, given that the majority of national developments are situated close to rivers. In this research, we measured and compared physicochemical quality properties, algae chlorophyll, carotenoid, and allophycocyanin contents, bioaccumulation factor (BAF), sediment quality indices, and the concentrations of Cd, As, and Pb in both sediment and algae samples across four seasons and at six reference stations along the Zayandeh-Rood River in Central Iran. The most abundant species were Spirogyra abbreviata, Spirogyra adnata, Characium acuminatum, and Navicula sp The mean concentrations of TMs (mg/kg) were as follows: Pb(21.07) > As(5.46) > Cd(0.98) in sediment and Pb(25.99) > As(6.18) > Cd(0.85) in algae, revealing a similar pattern. The correlation coefficients between algae and sediment TMs were mostly positive with BAF > 1 which indicate the ecological implications of algae as bioaccumulators of these TMs. The lack of significant correlations between algae characteristics and the accumulation of TMs can be attributed to their threshold tolerance and the use of a multi-species analysis. Based on sediment quality indices, the river was identified as being highly polluted with Cd. This pollution can be traced back to the uneven distribution of various anthropogenic activities along the river's course, especially agricultural practices and steel manufacturing plants. As a result, there is a consistent but progressively increasing distribution and accumulation of TMs downstream. These findings emphasize the critical need for continuous monitoring of TMs in both sediment and algae to safeguard the health of the ecosystem.

Abstract:The heavy metal contents (Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Hg, and As) of 88 surface sediment samples from the western Sunda Shelf were analyzed to determine their spatial distribution patterns and contamination status. The results demonstrated that high enrichment regions of heavy metals were focused in the Kelantan, Pahang, and Ambat river estuaries, and deep water regions of the study area. These high enrichment regions were mainly controlled by riverine inputs and their hydrodynamic conditions. The enrichment factor (EF), geoaccumulation index (Igeo), and potential ecological risk index (PERI) were used to assess heavy metal accumulation. The results indicated that the study area was not significantly contaminated overall at the time of the study; however, Cd, As, and Hg were at levels corresponding to moderate contamination at many stations located in the Pahang River estuary, Kelantan River estuary, and north-eastern region of the study area, primarily because of anthropogenic activities.

Abstract:The effect of land use on sediment quality depends on the spatial scale. It has been found that not only the type of land use but also the landscape characteristics has a significant impact on water quality ecosystem services provided by riparian zones including filtration of sediments and pollutants. In the present study, principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering were used to investigated the relationship between land use and landscape characteristic metrics with suspended and bed sediment heavy metal pollution at sub-watershed and multi-spatial buffer zone scales (250, 500, 750 and 1000 m) in Talar watershed. The results of multi-element sediment quality indices showed a high level of heavy metal pollution (As, Be, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Hg, Ni, Se, Ag, Ti and Zn) for all 10 sampling points upstream and downstream of the study river. Irrigated agriculture and residential were two land uses showed the highest positive meaningful correlation with sediment heavy metals in 250 m buffer and sub-watershed, respectively. Furthermore, the results showed that the higher level of diversity and interspersion of land use patches, the more negative effect on sediment pollution. Our study outcomes could provide useful information for managers and policymakers in land planning and development to minimize river sediment pollution and preserve the health of water resources.

Abstract:This work is mainly concerned with the effect of anthropogenic activities, the presence of black sand spots, factory construction, and shipping, in addition to other activities like agriculture, on soil heavy metal pollution along the Mediterranean shores of Lake El-Burullus, Egypt, to assess the contamination levels and to identify possible sources and the distribution of these metals. This study focuses on the various heavy metal contamination levels in El-Burullus Lake coastal sediments. Sediment samples were collected and analyzed by the XRF technique for heavy metals, including Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, Zr, Pb, Ba, Sr, Ga, Rb, V, and Nb. Statistical analyses, including correlation coefficient, factor analysis, and cluster analysis, were employed to understand the interactions and sources of these metals. The highest concentrations recorded were for Zr (84–1436 mg/kg) and Pb (1–1166 mg/kg), with average concentrations of 455.53 mg/kg and 79.27 mg/kg, respectively. Cr, Zr, Nb, and Pb showed average values higher than the average shale concentration, indicating potential pollution. Correlation analysis revealed strong associations between several metals, suggesting common sources of both natural and anthropogenic origin and similar distribution patterns. Factor analysis indicated four main factors accounting for 94.069% of the total variance, with the first factor heavily dominated by Cr, Ni, Zn, and Ba. The contamination factor (Cf) and degree (DC) analyses revealed varying contamination levels, with most metals exhibiting the greatest values in the western half of the area. The pollution load index (PLI) indicated high-quality sediment samples without significant pollution. Our findings highlight the importance of continued monitoring and management techniques to reduce possible environmental and health concerns associated with these pollutants.

Abstract:The results of mentioned physicochemical and biological analysis show that in more polluted sampling points, the number of resistance benthos (Bivalves) are more than other points of the study area. Heavy metal concentration in sediment is between 10 to 1000 times more than water samples especially for Arsenic, Mercury, and Vanadium. Dissolved Oxygen is acceptable all over the study area (more than 4 mg/L) based on environmental quality standards for dissolved oxygen which present the range of 2-9 mg/l for sensitive aquatic lives to less sensitive ones. However the presence of chemicals causes increase in the value of Chemical Oxygen Demand (around 500 to 1000 mg/L) and consequent decrease in water purification ability Nutrient uptake capacity which shown as the ratio of Nitrogen to phosphorus is appropriate (around 6) in parts of Musa estuary with more than 3 meters depth . The study area is a semi-closed tide-dominant water body with shallow depth, in comparison to the oceans. A 2-D modelling is applied to simulate current speed and direction. The results of this modelling shows except in the creeks, we have relatively suitable circulation of water in the estuary and current speed may exceed 0.8 m/s. It means Musa estuary is not a dead zone and in some parts which have enough water circulation and nutrient uptake for aquatic life, but huge amount of heavy metal (especially Mercury) in the sediment and water samples, indicates that all aquatic bodies overwhelmed by dangerous heavy metals.

Abstract:The Sefid-rud River is a significant river on the southern coast of the Caspian Sea in Iran. In this study, we collected 28 samples of surface sediments and water to assess the level of metal contamination. Chemical analysis revealed that the average concentrations of heavy metals in both sediments and water increase from upstream to downstream. There is no clear significant relationship observed between changes in the values of investigated elements in sediments and water. The levels of these elements in the sediments, exceed toxic response thresholds. In the water samples, As, Ni and V concentrations exceed the WHO standard values. According to the Igeo, EF and PLI indices, the sediments at most stations are not contaminated by any of the elements. The CF and Dc indices suggest low contamination levels at all stations. The NIPI and ecological risk indices (Er and RI) indicate non-polluted conditions at all stations except SF22, SF20, SF11, and SF6. The MI and HEI indices indicate pollution in all water samples of the Sefid-rud, but critical values are only observed at SF5 and SF15. The other stations show no contamination. The Cf index indicates high pollution levels for all elements except Cu, Zn, and Pb. The upstream area poses a relatively high and considerable ecological risk according to the PERI index. In conclusion, the sediments of the Sefid-rud River have a higher potential for the exchange of toxic substances compared to the aquatic environment.
