Abstract:We consider a game where a finite number of retailers choose a location, given that their potential consumers are distributed on a network. Retailers do not compete on price but only on location, therefore each consumer shops at the closest store. We show that when the number of retailers is large enough, the game admits a pure Nash equilibrium and we construct it. We then compare the equilibrium cost borne by the consumers with the cost that could be achieved if the retailers followed the dictate of a benevolent planner. We perform this comparison in term of the price of anarchy, i.e., the ratio of the worst equilibrium cost and the optimal cost, and the price of stability, i.e., the ratio of the best equilibrium cost and the optimal cost. We show that, asymptotically in the number of retailers, these ratios are bounded by two and one, respectively.

Abstract:A pure Hotelling game is a spatial competition between a finite number of players who simultaneously select a location in order to attract as many consumers as possible. In this paper, we study the case of a general distribution of consumers on a network generated by a metric graph. Because players do not compete on price, the continuum of consumers shop at the closest player’s location. If the number of sellers is large enough, we prove the existence of an approximate equilibrium in pure strategies, and we construct it.

Abstract:Generalized games model interactions between a set of selfish decision makers, called players or agents, where both the objective function and the feasible decision set of each player may depend on strategies of the competitors. Such games arise, for example, when agents compete for a share of some common but limited resources. For instance, consider a set of vehicles sharing the road, set of radio channels competing for bandwidth, or set of companies servicing an economic market. They can each be modeled as players/agents in a game, competing for a portion of available resources, that is, road capacity, total bandwidth, or market share. As resources are limited, player choices are bound together by a coupling-capacity constraint. Essentially, in a generalized game, or one with coupling constraints, the set of available choices an agent has depends on the choices of other agents. Thus, a player cannot simply optimize their own objective function without considering the decisions of the others, even though this objective might not depend on him or her. The relevant equilibrium (namely, the solution concept) for noncooperative decision making with coupling constraints is called a generalized Nash equilibrium (GNE).

Abstract:This paper studies a scheduling game on uniform machines with social cost of maximizing the minimum machine load. For the game with two machines, we present the (Strong) Price of Stability and (Strong) Price of Anarchy as a function of s , the ratio of the speeds of the two machines. These bounds are all tight for any value of s , thus the problem of measuring the inefficiency of equilibria on two uniform machines is completely solved. We also give the tight Price of Anarchy for a special case of three machines. From the results above, we achieve some new and interesting insights of scheduling games.

Abstract:We study a variant of the Hotelling-Downs model of spatial competition between firms where consumer choices are influenced by their individual preferences as well as the popularity of the firms. In general, a multiplicity of market equilibria might exist due to the popularity effect. To elucidate firm decision-making, we explore three distinct behavioral attitudes towards this multiplicity of equilibria: optimistic, neutral, and pessimistic. For each behavior, we characterize the set of Nash equilibria and measure the impact of the selfish behavior on the social welfare by means of the price of anarchy and price of stability.

Abstract:Competing firms tend to select similar locations for their stores. This phenomenon, called the principle of minimum differentiation, was captured by Hotelling with a landmark model of spatial competition but is still the object of an ongoing scientific debate. Although consistently observed in practice, many more realistic variants of Hotelling's model fail to support minimum differentiation or do not have pure equilibria at all. In particular, it was recently proven for a generalized model which incorporates negative network externalities and which contains Hotelling's model and classical selfish load balancing as special cases, that the unique equilibria do not adhere to minimum differentiation. Furthermore, it was shown that for a significant parameter range pure equilibria do not exist. We derive a sharp contrast to these previous results by investigating Hotelling's model with negative network externalities from an entirely new angle: approximate pure subgame perfect equilibria. This approach allows us to prove analytically and via agent-based simulations that approximate equilibria having good approximation guarantees and that adhere to minimum differentiation exist for the full parameter range of the model. Moreover, we show that the obtained approximate equilibria have high social welfare.

Abstract:This paper studies a spatial competition game between two firms that sell a homogeneous good at some pre-determined fixed price. A population of consumers is spread out over the real line, and the two firms simultaneously choose location in this same space. When buying from one of the firms, consumers incur the fixed price plus some transportation costs, which are increasing with their distance to the firm. Under the assumption that each consumer is ready to buy one unit of the good whatever the locations of the firms, firms converge to the median location: there is "minimal differentiation". In this article, we relax this assumption and assume that there is an upper limit to the distance a consumer is ready to cover to buy the good. We show that the game always has at least one Nash equilibrium in pure strategy. Under this more general assumption, the "minimal differentiation principle" no longer holds in general. At equilibrium, firms choose "minimal", "intermediate" or "full" differentiation, depending on this critical distance a consumer is ready to cover and on the shape of the distribution of consumers' locations.

Abstract:Facility location games have been a topic of major interest in economics, operations research and computer science, starting from the seminal work by Hotelling. In the classical pure location Hotelling game businesses compete for maximizing customer attraction by strategically locating their facilities, assuming no price competition, while customers are attracted to their closest facilities. Surprisingly, very little rigorous work has been presented on multi-unit facility location games, where the classical pure location Hotelling games are extended to contexts where each player is to locate several facilities. In this paper we present two major contributions to the study of multi-unit pure location Hotelling games. In the first part of this paper we deal with the two-player multi-unit setting, and fully characterize its equilibria. In the second part of this paper we deal with multi-unit facility location games, with $N\geq 3$ players; our main result in this part is the full characterization of the settings where pure strategy equilibria exist. Our results also extend classical results on necessary and sufficient conditions for a strategy profile to be in equilibrium in a pure location (single-unit) Hotelling game to multi-unit pure location games.

Abstract:This research examines the location-price game of two firms, where consumers with quadratic transportation costs are dispersed along the linear city [0, 1], while firms can select their business sites on a continuous but arbitrarily constrained interval [ m , n ] or on a discontinuous interval separated by a continuous zoning area, in which business activities are prohibited. We find that at least one subgame perfect equilibrium in pure strategies exists. Multiple equilibria may emerge when the continuous location region is far from consumers with the remote firm earning a zero profit. When the continuous region is relatively small and not too far from consumers, two firms choose to locate separately at the endpoints of the interval. When considering the discontinuous location region, the highest social surplus can be achieved when both firms are located on one side of the zoning area.

Abstract:In this paper we study variations of the standard Hotelling-Downs model of spatial competition, where each agent attracts the clients in a restricted neighborhood, each client randomly picks one attractive agent for service. Two utility functions for agents are considered: support utility and winner utility. We generalize the results by Feldman et al. to the case where the clients are distributed arbitrarily. In the support utility setting, we show that a pure Nash equilibrium always exists by formulating the game as a potential game. In the winner utility setting, we show that there exists a Nash equilibrium in two cases: when there are at most 3 agents and when the size of attraction area is at least half of the entire space. We also consider the price of anarchy and the fairness of equilibria and give tight bounds on these criteria.

Abstract:The classical Hotelling game is played on a line segment whose points represent uniformly distributed clients. The $n$ players of the game are servers who need to place themselves on the line segment, and once this is done, each client gets served by the player closest to it. The goal of each player is to choose its location so as to maximize the number of clients it attracts. In this paper we study a variant of the Hotelling game where each client $v$ has a tolerance interval, randomly distributed according to some density function $f$, and $v$ gets served by the nearest among the players eligible for it, namely, those that fall within its interval. (If no such player exists, then $v$ abstains.) It turns out that this modification significantly changes the behavior of the game and its states of equilibria. In particular, it may serve to explain why players sometimes prefer to "spread out", rather than to cluster together as dictated by the classical Hotelling game. We consider two variants of the game: symmetric games, where clients have the same tolerance range to their left and right, and asymmetric games, where the left and right ranges of each client are determined independently of each other. We fully characterize the Nash equilibria of the 2-player game. For at least 3 players, we characterize a specific class of strategy profiles, referred to as canonical profiles, and show that these profiles are the only ones that may yield Nash equilibria in our game. Moreover, the canonical profile, if exists, is uniquely defined for every $n$ and $f$. In both the symmetric and asymmetric setting, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the canonical profile to be a Nash equilibrium, and demonstrate their application for several distributions.

Abstract:It is wel-known that Nash considered the n-person noncooperative game with each player having finite strategic set and proved the celebrated existence result of Nash equilibrium point (in mixed strategies). This paper investigates the n-person noncooperative game with each player having infinite strategic set. By considering these infinite strategic as complete metric spaces and based on a new finite equilibrium system, we obtain new existence result of Nash equilibrium. Then an algorithm is given to compute Nash equilibrium points and its convergence is proved.

Abstract:Previous research on two-dimensional extensions of Hotelling's location game has argued that spatial competition leads to maximum differentiation in one dimensions and minimum differentiation in the other dimension. We expand on existing models to allow for endogenous entry into the market. We find that competition may lead to the min/max finding of previous work but also may lead to maximum differentiation in both dimensions. The critical issue in determining the degree of differentiation is if existing firms are seeking to deter entry of a new firm or to maximizing profits within an existing, stable market.

Abstract:In this paper we characterize the set of equilibria in a generalized version of the canonical two-region economic geography model that nests the class of models in Allen and Arkolakis (2014) as well as Krugman (1991) and features an input–output loop. We provide sufficient conditions for uniqueness of equilibria that — in contrast to the well-know result in Allen and Arkolakis (2014) — allow for positive agglomeration externalities, which concentrate economic activity, even in the absence of congestion effects, which disperse it, and highlight the key role played by three additional parameters: the trade elasticity , which regulates the strength of the dispersion force associated with the decline in the terms of trade caused by migration into a region; trade costs , which weaken this dispersion force by limiting trade across regions; and the importance of the agricultural sector , which pushes against agglomeration forces in manufacturing.

Equilibria in Two-Stage Facility Location with Atomic Clients

Abstract:We consider competitive facility location as a two-stage multi-agent system with two types of clients. For a given host graph with weighted clients on the vertices, first facility agents strategically select vertices for opening their facilities. Then, the clients strategically select which of the opened facilities in their neighborhood to patronize. Facilities want to attract as much client weight as possible, clients want to minimize congestion on the chosen facility. All recently studied versions of this model assume that clients can split their weight strategically. We consider clients with unsplittable weights but allow mixed strategies. So clients may randomize over which facility to patronize. Besides modeling a natural client behavior, this subtle change yields drastic changes, e.g., for a given facility placement, qualitatively different client equilibria are possible. As our main result, we show that pure subgame perfect equilibria always exist if all client weights are identical. For this, we use a novel potential function argument, employing a hierarchical classification of the clients and sophisticated rounding in each step. In contrast, for non-identical clients, we show that deciding the existence of even approximately stable states is computationally intractable. On the positive side, we give a tight bound of $2$ on the price of anarchy which implies high social welfare of equilibria, if they exist.

Abstract:In this paper we consider strong Nash equilibria, in mixed strategies, for finite games. Any strong Nash equilibrium outcome is Pareto efficient for each coalition. First, we analyze the two--player setting. Our main result, in its simplest form, states that if a game has a strong Nash equilibrium with full support (that is, both players randomize among all pure strategies), then the game is strictly competitive. In order to get our result we use the indifference principle fulfilled by any Nash equilibrium, and the classical KKT conditions (in the vector setting), that are necessary conditions for Pareto efficiency. Our characterization enables us to design a strong-Nash-equilibrium-finding algorithm with complexity in Smoothed-$\mathcal{P}$. So, this problem---that Conitzer and Sandholm [Conitzer, V., Sandholm, T., 2008. New complexity results about Nash equilibria. Games Econ. Behav. 63, 621--641] proved to be computationally hard in the worst case---is generically easy. Hence, although the worst case complexity of finding a strong Nash equilibrium is harder than that of finding a Nash equilibrium, once small perturbations are applied, finding a strong Nash is easier than finding a Nash equilibrium. Next we switch to the setting with more than two players. We demonstrate that a strong Nash equilibrium can exist in which an outcome that is strictly Pareto dominated by a Nash equilibrium occurs with positive probability. Finally, we prove that games that have a strong Nash equilibrium where at least one player puts positive probability on at least two pure strategies are extremely rare: they are of zero measure.

Abstract:In Hotelling's model of spatial competition, a unit mass of voters is distributed in the interval $[0,1]$ (with their location corresponding to their political persuasion), and each of $m$ candidates selects as a strategy his distinct position in this interval. Each voter votes for the nearest candidate, and candidates choose their strategy to maximize their votes. It is known that if there are more than two candidates, equilibria may not exist in this model. It was unknown, however, how close to an equilibrium one could get. Our work studies approximate equilibria in this model, where a strategy profile is an (additive) $\epsilon$-equilibria if no candidate can increase their votes by $\epsilon$, and provides tight or nearly-tight bounds on the approximation $\epsilon$ achievable.

Abstract:We consider a game in which each player must find a compromise between more daring strategies that carry a high risk for him to be eliminated, and more cautious ones that, however, reduce his final score. For two symmetric players this game was originally formulated in 1961 by Dresher, who modeled a duel between two opponents. The game has also been of interest in the description of athletic competitions. We extend here the two-player game to an arbitrary number $N$ of symmetric players. We show that there is a mixed-strategy Nash equilibrium and find its exact analytic expression, which we analyze in particular in the limit of large $N$, where mean-field behavior occurs. The original game with $N=2$ arises as a singular limit of the general case.

Abstract:We use Hotelling's spatial model of competition to investigate the position‐taking behavior of political candidates under a class of electoral systems known as scoring rules, though the model also has a natural interpretation in the firm location context. Candidates choose ideological positions so as to maximize their support in society. Convergent Nash equilibria in which all candidates adopt the same policy were characterized by Cox (1987). Here, we investigate nonconvergent equilibria, where candidates adopt divergent policies. We identify a number of classes of scoring rules exhibiting a range of different equilibrium properties. For some of these, nonconvergent equilibria do not exist. For others, nonconvergent equilibria in which candidates cluster at positions spread across the issue space are observed. In particular, we prove that the class of convex rules does not have Nash equilibria (convergent or nonconvergent) with the exception of some derivatives of Borda rule. We also look at “two‐party” equilibria. Implications for the firm location model are discussed.
