Abstract:Economic growth has become a global issue, especially after Covid-19, and attain the focus of recent studies and policymakers. A question that repeatedly arises when compulsion of sustainability is sought in a system and economies are obligated to strive for creative outcomes in order to increase economic efficiency. Meanwhile, green financing and sustainable economic development are also expected to be a part of the requirement as they are directly or indirectly indicators of economic growth. Thus, the current research examines the role of the Covid-19 outbreak along with green finance, sustainable economic development and creativity on the economic recovery in the context of G20 economies. This study has used the World Development Indicators (WDI) to extract the data of the selected countries from 2016 to 2020. The present study has also executed the robust standard error along with the fixed-effect model (FEM) to examine the nexus among the variables. The results revealed that green finance (green credit and renewable energy production), sustainable economic development environmental dimension (GHG emissions) and creativity have a positive association with economic growth in G20 countries. These outcomes are suitable for the new researchers while studying this area in the future and helpful for the regulators while developing the regulation related to the economic recovery.

Abstract:This research study analytically investigates the influence of green finance and financial technology on sustainable economic growth. The analysis is based on data from Indian states from 2010 to 2021. The research paper uses the panel regression method to examine the association between fintech, green finance and economic growth by applying a two-step GMM (generalized model of moments) to determine the endogeneity issues of the variables. This paper reveals that green finance widely helps quality economic growth by significantly impacting finance structure, financial effectiveness, and environmental quality protection development. Furthermore, fintech enhances the significant effect of green finance in the finance structure and environmental quality protection while lacking consequences on the association between green finance and economic effectiveness. Based on the results, the current research paper offers policy submissions for policymakers and the Government of India, including strengthening the consolidation of fintech growth with green finance, structuring a quality environmental revelation outline to control state governments in refining the effectiveness of green finance, and emerging prolonged satisfactory protocol as an outside involvement proceeding to encourage green finance in the non-public sector.

Abstract:Environmental protection has become a significant issue around the globe. The extensive use of renewable energy and green finance is considered as the solution to this dramatic issue, especially in the Covid-19 lockdown. To answer this demand, the present study examines the impact of green financial development such as green credit, green investment, and green securities along with corporate social responsibility (CSR) in reporting renewable energy investment based on evidence from an emerging economy. Economic growth was used as the control variable of the study. The data was gathered from the central bank and World Development Indicators (WDI) from 1976 to 2020. The error correction model (ECM) was used to test the nexus among the variables. The findings revealed that green credit, green investment, and green securities along with CSR reporting and economic growth have a significant positive nexus with renewable energy investment in the selected emerging economy. These outcomes are helpful for new arrivals to investigate this area in the future along with regulators who want to formulate policies related to green finance and renewable energy usage and investment in the context of emerging and developing countries.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of green finance (i.e. green investment, green security and green credit) along with capital formation and government educational expenditures on the economic development of (ASEAN) countries. Design/methodology/approach The data were gathered from the central banks of all ASEAN countries and the World Bank Indicators between 2008 and 2019. The fixed-effect model and generalized method of moments were used to check the nexus between the constructs. Findings The results revealed that green finance along with capital formation and government educational expenditures have a positive association with the economic development of ASEAN countries. Research limitations/implications The study carries some limitations, even though it addresses the underlying variables comprehensively. These limitations provide opportunities to future researchers and authors to expand the scope and accuracy of their study. This research investigation has been supported by the data collected from a single source. Though data collection is maintained correctly, it is still recommended to the upcoming scholars to acquire data to reconfirm the same findings using multiple data sources. The data collected from using some specific data source may be limited in scope and may hinder the comprehensive elaboration of the underlying variables and their mutual relationship. Therefore, the utilization of multiple sources of data collection gives data sufficient to meet the requirement of an okay quality research study. The study is about the economies of ASEAN countries. It checks the influences of green finance development on economic activities and the country's economic growth in ASEAN countries' economies. Thus, its results are valid only in the economies of these countries, and this research investigation lacks generalizability. For generalizability, the authors must consider the underlying variables in the world's vast economies. They must adopt a standard scale to judge the impacts of green financial development on economic development. Besides, the study analyzes the economic factors, economic conditions and their effects on the country's position in the world economy in the face of a severe epidemic like COVID-19. Thus, the results may be different in the case of the normal situation. So, a general standardized study is recommended to be conducted in the upcoming days. Originality/value Green finance has significant capability to improve the global economy, especially amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. This study is beneficial for policymakers to develop policies related to economic development with reference to green finance and also helps future research on a similar topic.

Abstract:Digital financing is an emerging source after COVID-19 to address novel problems of economies and different industries. With the growing concern about the sustainability of the global environment, developing countries are now moving toward unprecedented economic development. This research analyzes the impact of digital finance and economic growth on environmental sustainability in China from 1995 to 2020, focusing on natural resource management. To include asymmetric patterns and handle socioeconomic shocks during the last three decades, the research uses the cutting-edge ordinary least square (O.L.S.) methodology. The O.L.S. helps the research findings and illustrated patterns of ecological sustainability dependency across various data distributions. According to the empirical results, N.R., F.D.P., and G.D.P. all benefited from carbon emissions at higher and lower emissions quantiles. Green technology innovation, on the other hand, considerably reduces emissions across all quantiles. Notably, the effect of each repressor significantly changed for lower, medium, and higher emissions quantiles, showing a thorough understanding of China's resource scarcity and sustainable growth.

Abstract:This study investigates the critical role of green finance in enhancing environmental and economic resilience during China's post-COVID-19 recovery. Employing sophisticated econometric techniques, including the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) and Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) model, the effectiveness of green finance policies and instruments is rigorously assessed during the years 1986-2022. The findings reveal that green finance initiatives significantly fund sustainable projects and drive economic revitalization, marking substantial progress in China's eco-friendly recovery. Essential areas for improvement identified include robust policy support, technological innovation, and stronger international collaboration. Specifically, leveraging green finance effectively necessitates coordinated efforts across various sectors, ensuring it underpins China's sustainable development and resilience amid global economic challenges. The study recommends enhancing green finance mechanisms through comprehensive policy frameworks, fostering green technology innovation, and developing global partnerships to address environmental sustainability and economic recovery synergistically.

Abstract:The recent global recession due to Covid-19 has led to a drop in natural resource prices, which has contracted energy demand. Amid this concern, environmentally sustainable renewable energy projects have become uncompetitive and an obstacle to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Following the nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) model proposed by Shin et al. (2014), to asymmetrically explore the impact of green bonds on renewable energy investment and environmental pollution and the impact of renewable energy consumption on environmental degradation in China over the period 1970–2020. The results show that the expansion of green bonds (GB+) significantly promotes renewable energy investment and reduces environmental pollution, while the contraction of green bonds (GB − ) significantly reduces renewable energy investment and stimulates environmental damage. Likewise, expansion of renewable energy consumption (REC+) significantly reduced environmental degradation, while contraction of renewable energy consumption (REC − ) significantly contributed to environmental degradation. Moreover, the result also validates the existence of inverted U-shaped EKC hypothesis in China The VECM Granger causality test indicate that renewable energy investment, green finance, renewable energy consumption, CO 2 emission, and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) have long term causality. Chinese policymakers must focus on strengthening green finance, which will encourage renewable energy investment and renewable energy generation. Moreover, renewable electricity output greatly facilitates renewable energy investment, so China must innovate policies to take into account renewable electricity rather than fossil fuel generation in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Abstract:This paper examines the return and volatility connectedness among green finance markets including the green bonds, clean energy and socially responsible stocks, especially focusing on the connectedness changes induced by the COVID-19 pandemic. Specially, by employing the TVP-VAR extended joint connectedness approach, five representative time series, i.e., S&P Green Bond index (GBI), S&P Global Clean Energy index (GCEI), S&P Global 1200 ESG index (ESGI), S&P Global 1200 Carbon Efficient index (CEI) and S&P Global 1200 Fossil Fuel Free index (FFFI), are used to measure the connectedness among the markets over the sample period spanning from 1 January 2014 to 31 December 2021. The empirical results show that GBI is the main net receiver of return spillovers, followed by ESGI, CEI and FFFI, whereas GCEI is the main net transmitter of return spillovers during the full sample period. The dynamic total connectedness of five indices' returns is strongly fluctuating and especially exhibits a significant spike after the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic. Interestingly, the findings of volatility connectedness indicate that ESGI, CEI, and FFFI are net transmitters of volatility spillovers during the full, pre-COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 periods. In addition, the network connectedness analysis highlights the role of GCEI in facilitating the transmission of financial contagion during the full and pre-COVID-19 periods, while that during the post-COVID-19 period shows that GBI receives more spillovers from others, indicating that the connections of the five indices tend to be stronger during market downturn periods caused by extreme events. Our results provide implications for investors and policymakers.

Abstract:Promoting green investment is the inevitable choice for sustainable economics against climate change. We examine how the COVID-19 pandemic affected corporate green investment. Using a sample of publicly listed firms in China, we document the negative and significant effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on corporate green investment. Further analyses suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic impeded corporate green investment by exacerbating firms' financial constraints. We also find that the COVID-19 pandemic had no significant effect on total investment, suggesting that the pandemic shock only changed investment structure. In summary, our findings reveal the real effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on green development at the firm level.

Abstract:COVID-19 has morphed from a health crisis to an economic crisis that affected the global economy through several channels. This paper aims to study the impact of COVID-19 on the time-frequency connectedness between Green Bonds and other financial assets. Our sample includes the global stock market, bond market, oil, USD index, and two popular hedging alternatives, namely Gold and Bitcoin, from May 2013 to August 2020. First, we apply the methodologies of Diebold and Yilmaz (International Journal of Forecasting, 2012, 28(1), 57–66) and Baruník and Křehlík (Journal of Financial Econometrics, 2018, 16(2), 271–296). Then, we estimate hedge ratios and hedge effectiveness of green bonds for other financial assets. Green bonds are found to have a great weight in the overall network, particularly strongly connected with the USD index and bond index. While the bi-directional relationship with USD persists during COVID, the connectedness with conventional bonds is also strengthened. Notably, we find a weak relationship between Green bonds and Bitcoin, both in the short and long run. As portfolio implications, Gold and USD have the highest hedge ratio, which is confirmed by the hedging effectiveness. In contrast, oil and stocks exhibit the lowest hedging effectiveness. Our findings imply that financial assets might have a heterogeneous relationship with green bonds. Furthermore, despite its infancy, it seems that the role of green bond during a crisis should not be ignored, as it can be a hedger for some assets, while a contagion amplifier during crisis times.

Abstract:The aim of study is to estimate the role of energy financing for energy retrofit in COVID-19, with the intervening role of green bond financing. For this, Kalman technique is applied to infer the empirical findings. It is found that energy financing is significantly dependent on green bonds, and green bonds have a significant role in energy retrofit in E-7 economies specifically. It is further found that E-7 economies gained significant rise in energy efficiency financing green bonds financing, that has supportively extended energy retrofit - before and during COVID-19 crises. It is further found significant that the E-7 nations have to put alot of money into hydro and nuclear energy for energy retrofit, with low carbon emissions. In the light of COVID-19 crises, this study offers policy recommendations for effective energy management. However, such policy recommendations are expected to finely serve the financial intermediaries and national governments of E-7 economies to better optimize energy financing through green bond financing. The novelty of the study exists in topical framework and research directions, talking about the way forwards for energy efficiency financing - which is one of the latest issue of the recent times. Hence, this research provides some empirical verifications about energy financing in COVID-19 crises for energy retrofit, and shares some suggestions for stakeholders.

Abstract:Background: In China, the transportation sector is the main energy consumer and the main source of carbon emissions. Reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector is an important goal for China, especially during the current period of economic development. Due to the impact of pandemic shocks, the rapid development of green finance is conducive to supporting the transportation sector in achieving a carbon peak. Thus, we examined whether the development of green finance is still effective under the impact of a pandemic and the actual effect of green finance on the reduction of carbon emissions. Methods: In this study, we searched the internet for consumption structure data of vehicles and green finance indices of 30 Chinese provinces and cities from 2016 to 2021. A regression discontinuity model was constructed to test the effect of pandemic shock and green finance development on the reduction of transportation energy carbon emissions. Results: The results show that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has helped people change their preference toward more energy-efficient vehicles and reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector. Green finance can effectively contribute to the reduction of transportation energy carbon emissions; however, the overall mitigation effect is limited. Conclusion: The empirical evidence is not only helpful in assessing the long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic but also conducive to the appropriate establishment of policy tools for supporting green finance development, which is further conducive to reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector.

Assessing the impact of green fiscal policies and energy poverty on energy efficiency

Abstract:This article estimates the ties between green fiscal policies and energy efficiency in COVID-19 era. For this purpose, data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach is considered and applied. The study findings show that green fiscal policies, such as public supports and tax rebates, have significant role in reducing energy poverty of different international countries by advancing energy efficiency. Therefore, a panel data ranging from 2010 to 2020 is used. Our findings indicate that the aggregate degree of green fiscal policies help to decline energy poverty. Renewable energy companies had larger series of net fiscal competence and size efficiency, and their levels of energy efficiency were greater than 0.457%, with the 16% effect of current public supports and 11% effect of taxation rebates supported to diminish energy poverty with 29.7% in different international economies. This is a positive effect by green fiscal policies. The study also presented policy implications suggesting effectively implementing green fiscal policies for more efficient carbon reduction and making climate change supportive for peoples in post COVID-19 period.

Abstract:The worldwide spread of the COVID-19 epidemic has led to a rise in the costs of natural resources, which has increased production prices, slowed productivity, and threatened financial development. To stimulate the growth of sustainable economies, fiscal and monetary strategies must adopt a prioritized approach towards fostering innovation and development. The study investigates into recovery strategies by examining the influence of minute taxation reductions on power and exploring the incentives and mechanisms that drive innovation. We can estimate and deduce several outcomes by employing a variance-variance method to analyze quarterly data from Chinese companies listed in the market between Q1 2019 and Q2 2021. Enhancing energy efficiency through tax incentives can immensely benefit a company's innovative endeavors, as innovation serves to recover and expand market share. Furthermore, our research suggests that tax credits promoting energy efficiency can alleviate financial barriers and foster increased investment in innovation. Lastly, by endorsing artistic ventures, businesses can reduce costs and bolster internal cash flow. The implications of these findings are insignificant, as they propose that ineffective eco-design fiscal policies may serve as a negligible component of a limited business transformation plan for the post-COVID-19 era.

Abstract:The impact investing literature largely focuses on private equity investing and overlooks the investments made through debt financing that actually dominate the market. To address this research gap, this paper investigates whether impact financing is associated with financial benefits. By using COVID-19 as an exogenous shock to China's stock market, this paper applies fixed effects panel data analysis with a difference-in-differences research design to provide robust empirical outcomes. The results reveal those financial institutions that better integrated environmental impacts into their financing process experienced positive stock return changes in response to the shock. This study answers the question of how well an impact scales. The findings suggest that impact financing is an effective model, as the impacts incorporated in the debt can be scaled up compared to impact investing funds with low volumes. Impact financing has enormous potential for financial institutions to engage in the green transition since they can derive pecuniary utility while delivering environmental impacts. The revelation of financial benefits also contributes to overcoming the lack of knowledge about impact financing and helps to remove the barriers that advance industry growth.

Abstract:The recent COVID-19-induced global economic recession has led to lower natural resource prices, thereby reducing energy demand. Amid this concern, renewable energy projects have become uncompetitive and an obstacle to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Following Pesaran et al.'s ( Journal of Applied Econometrics , 16 , 289–326, 2001) ARDL approach, green finance, renewable energy generation, and private energy investment have strong incremental effects on short-term and long-term renewable energy investment in China during 1980–2022. The findings also show that green finance, renewable electricity output, renewable energy consumption, and the square of gross domestic product (GDP 2 ) have a significant negative impact, while gross domestic product (GDP) has a significant positive impact on China's long-term CO 2 emissions. The positive association between GDP and carbon dioxide emissions and the negative relationship between GDP 2 and carbon dioxide emissions rationalize the inverted U-shaped EKC hypothesis for China. The vector error correction model (VECM) Granger causality test indicates that renewable energy investment, green finance, renewable energy consumption, CO 2 emission, and gross domestic product (GDP) have long-term causality. Policies must aim to control volatility and promote investment in renewable energy investment, green finance, and renewable electricity output for sustainable growth and the environment.

Green management, access to credit, and firms' vulnerability to the COVID-19 crisis

Abstract:This paper investigates the consequences of the COVID-19 crisis on firms' performance and financial vulnerability. Exploiting longitudinal firm-level data from the World Bank's "Enterprise Surveys follow-up on COVID-19" for 20 European countries, we assess whether green management quality and pre-pandemic credit access difficulties affect firms' ability to withstand the negative impact of the pandemic. Our results indicate that green firms are more resilient to the pandemic shock. In particular, the likelihood of pandemic-induced drops in sales and liquidity significantly decreases as the quality of green management improves. Conversely, prior financing constraints strongly exacerbate the pandemic's impact on firms' performance and amplify liquidity stress and financing problems. Credit-constrained enterprises are not only more likely to experience liquidity shortages and repayment problems, but they also face higher difficulties in accessing bank financing. The COVID-19 crisis has also hampered the beneficial role that green management exerted on access to credit in the pre-pandemic period. During the pandemic, firms with sound environmental management practices do not benefit from improved access to finance and have a lower demand for credit, possibly suggesting a slowdown in their green investment activities. Abstract:Since the start of twenty-first century, the globe has bumped into several crises, such as the sudden rise of oil prices in 2003 and the large-scale global financial crisis in 2007–2008. However, the most recent COVID-19 outbreak has slowed fiscal progress and initiated instability in the prices of commodities-based natural resources. The instability of prices of natural resources attracted the focus of academicians and policymakers. Moreover, the recent pandemic also pushed up the need of green finance and renewable energy investment for renewable energy development. The current study, thus, explores sustainable economic advancements via natural resource rents, green financing, renewable electricity energy, and investment in renewable energy projects in China over the period of 2000 to 2023 including years of pre-post COVID-pandemic. The current paper used CCR (canonical cointegrating regression), DOLS (dynamic ordinary least squares), and FMOLS (fully modified ordinary least squares), for its empirical investigation. The results demonstrate the cointegration of first-differenced stationary variables in the longer run. The parameter of natural resource rents shows that the volatility of natural resource prices adversely influences the sustainable economic advancement of China. Findings also demonstrate that green finance strategy can simultaneously control the high-emission situation and increase economic development of country. Additionally, the findings reveal the positive effects of renewable electricity energy output, and investment in renewable energy projects for sustainable economic advancements.

Abstract:Green finance and digital finance are cornerstones of sustainable growth. Given the significant investment and funding challenges that South Asia's new energy development faces, the potential role of digital finance in this situation is uncertain. Applying panel regression analysis and using a two-step generalized method of moments (GMM) to eliminate endogeneity, this study examines the connections between green finance, financial technology (FinTech), and high-quality economic development using data from three South Asian economies between 2000 and 2018. The study demonstrates that India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan use multiple green financing initiatives, resulting in a considerable decrease in commercial CO2 across the review period, which extends environmental protection and confirms the green economic recovery. FinTech development also helps reduce CO2 emissions, making a favorable contribution. Selected South Asian countries are on track to become world leaders in green finance strategy implementation, and authorities must speed up the development of green recovery and services and strengthen banking institutions' ability to provide green loans. FinTech and green finance, it turns out, have a significant impact on green economic development. The study also has policy implications for the associated stakeholders.

Abstract:The research intends to investigate the green financing trends movement with renewable energy dependence of G-20 economies. The data envelopment analysis (DEA) technique explains research results and illustrates current topicality. The Wald econometric method is utilized for robustness analysis, and a comparative picture of public support is provided. The research demonstrated that green financing metrics are significantly affected by public support during the COVID-19 crisis. Due to the volatility of COVID-19, public assistance funding plays an uneven role in green finance. G-20 member nations financed 17% of total green financing using public funds, which contributed 4% to GDP and achieved 16% of annual energy dependence improvement due to COVID-19 and 24% additional production from renewable energy resources. The results of this research demand maximal support by using positions in the government, ministries in charge of energy efficiency, and departments for energy efficiency improvement. Several possible policy interventions are discussed in this paper that may increase renewable energy efficiency via several alternative approaches, including on-bill financing, direct efficiency grant, guaranteed energy efficiency contracts, and credit lines for energy efficiency. If recommended policies are implemented successfully, they are expected to reduce the crisis' impact and elevate funding for energy efficiency.
