Abstract:Quantum ground states which arise at atomically controlled oxide interfaces provide an opportunity to address key questions in condensed matter physics, including the nature of two-dimensional (2D) metallic behaviour often observed adjacent to superconductivity. At the superconducting LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface, a metallic ground state emerges upon the collapse of superconductivity with field-effect gating. Strikingly, such metallicity is accompanied with a pseudogap. Here, we utilize independent control of carrier density and disorder of the interfacial superconductor using dual electrostatic gates, which enables the comprehensive examination of the electronic phase diagram approaching zero temperature. We find that the pseudogap corresponds to precursor pairing, and the onset of long-range phase coherence forms a 2D superconducting dome as a function of the dual gate voltages. The gate-tuned superconductor-metal transitions are driven by macroscopic phase fluctuations of Josephson coupled superconducting puddles.

Abstract:The last 15 years have witnessed important progresses in our understanding of the mechanism of superconductivity in the high-$T_{c}$ cuprates. There is now strong evidence that the strange metal behavior is induced by the quantum critical fluctuation at the pseudogap end point, where the Fermi surface changes its topology from hole-like to electron-like. However, experiments show that the quantum critical behavior in the high-$T_{c}$ cuprates is qualitatively different from that observed in the heavy Fermion systems and the iron-based superconductors, in both of which the quantum critical behavior can be attributed to the quantum phase transition toward a symmetry breaking phase. The fact that the pseudogap exists as a spectral gap without a corresponding symmetry breaking order, together with the fact that the strange metal behavior occurs as a quantum critical behavior without a corresponding symmetry breaking phase transition, exposes the central difficulty of the field: the lack of a universal low energy effective theory description of the high-$T_{c}$ phenomenology beyond the Landau paradigm. Recent experiments imply that the dualism between the local moment and the itinerant quasiparticle character of the electron in the high-$T_{c}$ cuprates may serve as an organizing principle to go beyond the Landau paradigm and may hold the key to the mystery of the pseudogap phenomena and the strange metal behavior.

Abstract:Abstract Copper oxide superconductors continue to fascinate the communities of condensed matter physics and material sciences because they host the highest ambient-pressure superconducting transition temperature and unconventional electronic behaviour that are not fully explained 1–3 . Searching for universal links between the superconducting state and its normal metallic state is believed to be an effective approach to elucidate the underlying mechanism of superconductivity. One of the common expectations for copper oxide superconductors is that a metallic phase will appear after the superconductivity is entirely suppressed by chemical doping 4–8 or the application of a magnetic field 9 . Here we report the first observation of a quantum phase transition from a superconducting state to an insulating-like state as a function of pressure in Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+ δ (Bi2212) superconductors with two CuO 2 planes in a unit cell for doping below, at and above a level that achieves the highest transition temperature. We also find the same phenomenon in related compounds with a single CuO 2 plane as well as three CuO 2 planes in a unit cell. This apparently universal phenomenon poses a challenge for achieving a unified understanding of the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity.

In the present paper, we consider the electron pair formation and a peculiar canonical transformation analogous to the transformation once applied to the theory of pairing correlations in nuclear matter. It is shown that the quasi-particle energy spectrum remains that of the BCS theory, including the linear relationship between forbidden energy gap and critical temperature. The model is also applied to superconductivity of some copperless perovskites of mixed stoichiometry, whose features are of special worth in understanding the mechanism of the phenomenon. The possibility of enhancing critical temperature in cuprates by inserting monovalent ions into the lattice is considered.

Abstract:Electronic Raman scattering measurements have been performed on hole doped copper oxide superconductors as a function of temperature and doping level. In the superconducting state coherent Bogoliubov quasiparticles develop preferentially over the nodal region in the underdoped regime. We can then define the fraction of coherent Fermi surface, $f_c$ around the nodes for which quasiparticles are well defined and superconductivity sets in. We find that $f_c$ is doping dependent and leads to the emergence of two energy scales. We then establish in a one single gap shem, that the critical temperature $T_{c} \propto f_{c}\Delta_{max}$ where $\Delta_{max}$ is the maximum amplitude of the d-wave superconducting gap. In the normal state, the loss of antinodal quasiparticles spectral weight detected in the superconducting state persists and the spectral weight is only restored above the pseudogap temperature $T*$. Such a dichotomy in the quasiparticles dynamics is then responsible for the emergence of the two energy scales in the superconducting state and the appearance of the pseudogap in the normal state. We propose a 3D phase diagram where both the temperature and the energy phase diagrams have been plotted together. We anticipate that the development of coherent excitations on a restricted part of the Fermi surface only is a general feature in high $T_c$ cuprate superconductors as the Mott insulating is approaching.
Quantum oscillations and the Fermi surface in an underdoped high-Tc superconductor

Abstract:Despite twenty years of research, the phase diagram of high transition- temperature superconductors remains enigmatic. A central issue is the origin of the differences in the physical properties of these copper oxides doped to opposite sides of the superconducting region. In the overdoped regime, the material behaves as a reasonably conventional metal, with a large Fermi surface. The underdoped regime, however, is highly anomalous and appears to have no coherent Fermi surface, but only disconnected "Fermi arcs". The fundamental question, then, is whether underdoped copper oxides have a Fermi surface, and if so, whether it is topologically different from that seen in the overdoped regime. Here we report the observation of quantum oscillations in the electrical resistance of the oxygen-ordered copper oxide YBa2Cu3O6.5, establishing the existence of a well-defined Fermi surface in the ground state of underdoped copper oxides, once superconductivity is suppressed by a magnetic field. The low oscillation frequency reveals a Fermi surface made of small pockets, in contrast to the large cylinder characteristic of the overdoped regime. Two possible interpretations are discussed: either a small pocket is part of the band structure specific to YBa2Cu3O6.5 or small pockets arise from a topological change at a critical point in the phase diagram. Our understanding of high-transition temperature (high-Tc) superconductors will depend critically on which of these two interpretations proves to be correct.

Abstract:Marked evolution of properties with minute changes in the doping level is a hallmark of the complex chemistry that governs copper oxide superconductivity as manifested in the celebrated superconducting domes and quantum criticality taking place at precise compositions1–4. The strange-metal state, in which the resistivity varies linearly with temperature, has emerged as a central feature in the normal state of copper oxide superconductors5–9. The ubiquity of this behaviour signals an intimate link between the scattering mechanism and superconductivity10–12. However, a clear quantitative picture of the correlation has been lacking. Here we report the observation of precise quantitative scaling laws among the superconducting transition temperature (Tc), the linear-in-T scattering coefficient (A1) and the doping level (x) in electron-doped copper oxide La2–xCexCuO4 (LCCO). High-resolution characterization of epitaxial composition-spread films, which encompass the entire overdoped range of LCCO, has enabled us to systematically map its structural and transport properties with unprecedented accuracy and with increments of Δx = 0.0015. We have uncovered the relations Tc ~ (xc – x)0.5 ~ (A1□)0.5, where xc is the critical doping in which superconductivity disappears and A1□ is the coefficient of the linear resistivity per CuO2 plane. The striking similarity of the Tc versus A1□ relation among copper oxides, iron-based and organic superconductors may be an indication of a common mechanism of the strange-metal behaviour and unconventional superconductivity in these systems.

Abstract:After decades of explorations, suffering from low critical temperature and subtle nature, whether a metallic ground state exists in a two-dimensional system beyond Anderson localization is still a mystery. Supremely, phase coherence could be the key that unlocks its intriguing nature. This work reveals how quantum phase coherence evolves across bosonic superconductor-metal-insulator transitions via magneto-conductance quantum oscillations in high-Tc superconducting films. A robust intervening anomalous metallic state characterized by both resistance and oscillation amplitude saturations in the low temperature regime is detected. By contrast, with decreasing temperature the oscillation amplitude monotonically grows on the superconducting side, but decreases at low temperatures on the insulating side. It suggests that the saturation of phase coherence plays a prominent role in the formation of this anomalous metallic state.
Emergence of Particle-Hole Symmetry near Optimal Doping in High-Temperature Copper Oxide Superconductors

Abstract:High-temperature copper oxide superconductors (cuprates) display unconventional physics when they are lightly doped whereas the standard theory of metals prevails in the opposite regime. For example, the thermoelectric power, that is the voltage that develops across a sample in response to a temperature gradient, changes sign abruptly near optimal doping in a wide class of cuprates, a stark departure from the standard theory of metals in which the thermopower vanishes only when one electron exists per site. We show that this effect arises from proximity to a state in which particle-hole symmetry is dynamically generated. The operative mechanism is dynamical spectral weight transfer from states that lie at least 2eV away from the chemical potential. We show that the sign change is reproduced quantitatively within the Hubbard model for moderate values of the on-site repulsion, $U$. For sufficiently large values of on-site repulsion, for example, $U=20t$, ($t$ the hopping matrix element), dynamical spectral weight transfer attenuates and our calculated results for the thermopower are in prefect agreement with exact atomic limit. The emergent particle-hole symmetry close to optimal doping points to pairing in the cuprates being driven by high-energy electronic states.

Abstract:Many unconventional superconductors exhibit a common set of anomalous charge transport properties that characterize them as `strange metals', which provides hope that there is single theory that describes them. However, model-independent connections between the strange metal and superconductivity have remained elusive. In this letter, we show that the Hall effect of the unconventional superconductor BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ contains an anomalous contribution arising from the correlations within the strange metal. This term has a distinctive dependence on magnetic field, which allows us to track its behavior across the doping-temperature phase diagram, even under the superconducting dome. These measurements demonstrate that the strange metal Hall component emanates from a quantum critical point and, in the zero temperature limit, decays in proportion to the superconducting critical temperature. This creates a clear and novel connection between quantum criticality and superconductivity, and suggests that similar connections exist in other strange metal superconductors.
On the Electron Pairing Mechanism of Copper-Oxide High Temperature Superconductivity

Abstract:The elementary CuO2 plane sustaining cuprate high-temperature superconductivity occurs typically at the base of a periodic array of edge-sharing CuO5 pyramids. Virtual transitions of electrons between adjacent planar Cu and O atoms, occurring at a rate $t/{\hbar}$ and across the charge-transfer energy gap E, generate 'superexchange' spin-spin interactions of energy $J\approx4t^4/E^3$ in an antiferromagnetic correlated-insulator state. However, Hole doping the CuO2 plane converts this into a very high temperature superconducting state whose electron-pairing is exceptional. A leading proposal for the mechanism of this intense electron-pairing is that, while hole doping destroys magnetic order it preserves pair-forming superexchange interactions governed by the charge-transfer energy scale E. To explore this hypothesis directly at atomic-scale, we combine single-electron and electron-pair (Josephson) scanning tunneling microscopy to visualize the interplay of E and the electron-pair density nP in ${Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+x}}$. The responses of both E and nP to alterations in the distance {\delta} between planar Cu and apical O atoms are then determined. These data reveal the empirical crux of strongly correlated superconductivity in CuO2, the response of the electron-pair condensate to varying the charge transfer energy. Concurrence of predictions from strong-correlation theory for hole-doped charge-transfer insulators with these observations, indicates that charge-transfer superexchange is the electron-pairing mechanism of superconductive ${Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+x}}$.

Exploring Superconductivity: The Interplay of Electronic Orders in Topological Quantum Materials

Abstract:Topological quantum materials hold great promise for future technological applications. Their unique electronic properties, such as protected surface states and exotic quasiparticles, offer opportunities for designing novel electronic devices, spintronics, and quantum information processing. The origin of the interplay between various electronic orders in topological quantum materials, such as superconductivity and magnetism, remains unclear, particularly whether these electronic orders cooperate, compete, or simply coexist. Since the 2000s, the combination of topology and matter has sparked a tremendous surge of interest among theoreticians and experimentalists alike. Novel theoretical descriptions and predictions, as well as complex experimental setups confirming or refuting these theories, continuously appear in renowned journals. This review aims to provide conceptual tools to understand the fundamental concepts of this ever-growing field. Superconductivity and its historical development will serve as a second pillar alongside topological materials. While the primary focus will be on topological superconductors, other topological materials, such as topological insulators and topological semimetals, will also be explained phenomenologically.

Spectroscopic Studies of Quasiparticle Low-Energy Excitations in Cuprate and Iron-Based High-Temperature Superconductors

Abstract:Recent development in the physics of high-temperature superconductivity is reviewed, with special emphasis on the studies of the low-energy excitations of cuprate and iron-based superconductors. For cuprate superconductors, a phenomenology based on coexisting competing orders with superconductivity in the ground state of these doped Mott insulators is shown to provide a consistent account for a wide range of experimental findings. In the case of iron-based superconductors, studies of the low-energy excitations reveal interesting similarities and differences when compared with cuprate superconductors. In contrast to the single-band cuprate superconductivity with an insulating parent state, the ferrous superconductors are multi-band materials with a semi-metallic parent state and exhibit two-gap superconductivity when doped. On the other hand, both systems exhibit strong antiferromagnetic correlation and Fermi-surface distortion, leading to unconventional pairing symmetries with sign-changing order parameters on different parts of the Fermi surface. These findings suggest that the pairing potentials in both the cuprate and the ferrous superconductors are generally repulsive, thus favor a pairing mechanism that is electronically driven and a pairing strength that is closely related to the electronic correlation. The physical implications of the unified phenomenology based on antiferromagnetic correlations and remaining open issues associated with the cuprate and ferrous superconductivity are discussed.
Superconductivity mediated by quantum critical antiferromagnetic fluctuations: The rise and fall of hot spots

Abstract:In several unconventional superconductors, the highest superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ is found in a region of the phase diagram where the antiferromagnetic transition temperature extrapolates to zero, signaling a putative quantum critical point. The elucidation of the interplay between these two phenomena - high-$T_{c}$ superconductivity and magnetic quantum criticality - remains an important piece of the complex puzzle of unconventional superconductivity. In this paper, we combine sign-problem-free Quantum Monte Carlo simulations and field-theoretical analytical calculations to unveil the microscopic mechanism responsible for the superconducting instability of a general low-energy model, called spin-fermion model. In this approach, low-energy electronic states interact with each other via the exchange of quantum critical magnetic fluctuations. We find that even in the regime of moderately strong interactions, both the superconducting transition temperature and the pairing susceptibility are governed not by the properties of the entire Fermi surface, but instead by the properties of small portions of the Fermi surface called hot spots. Moreover, $T_{c}$ increases with increasing interaction strength, until it starts to saturate at the crossover from hot-spots dominated to Fermi-surface dominated pairing. Our work provides not only invaluable insights into the system parameters that most strongly affect $T_{c}$, but also important benchmarks to assess the origin of superconductivity in both microscopic models and actual materials.

Metal-insulator transition in copper oxides induced by apex displacements

Abstract:High temperature superconductivity has been found in many kinds of compounds built from planes of Cu and O, separated by spacer layers. Understanding why critical temperatures are so high has been the subject of numerous investigations and extensive controversy. To realize high temperature superconductivity, parent compounds are either hole-doped, such as {La$_{2}$CuO$_4$} (LCO) with Sr (LSCO), or electron doped, such as {Nd$_{2}$CuO$_4$} (NCO) with Ce (NCCO). In the electron doped cuprates, the antiferromagnetic phase is much more robust than the superconducting phase. However, it was recently found that the reduction of residual out-of-plane apical oxygens dramatically affects the phase diagram, driving those compounds to a superconducting phase. Here we use a recently developed first principles method to explore how displacement of the apical oxygen (A-O) in LCO affects the optical gap, spin and charge susceptibilities, and superconducting order parameter. By combining quasiparticle self-consistent GW (QS\emph{GW}) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT), that LCO is a Mott insulator; but small displacements of the apical oxygens drive the compound to a metallic state through a localization/delocalization transition, with a concomitant maximum $d$-wave order parameter at the transition. We address the question whether NCO can be seen as the limit of LCO with large apical displacements, and elucidate the deep physical reasons why the behaviour of NCO is so different than the hole doped materials. We shed new light on the recent correlation observed between T$_c$ and the charge transfer gap, while also providing a guide towards the design of optimized high-Tc superconductors. Further our results suggest that strong correlation, enough to induce Mott gap, may not be a prerequisite for high-Tc superconductivity.

Abstract:Emergency of superconductivity at the instabilities of antiferromagnetism (AFM), spin/charge density waves has been widely recognized in unconventional superconductors. In copper-oxide superconductors, spin fluctuations play a predominant role in electron pairing with electron dopants yet composite orders veil the nature of superconductivity for hole-doped family. However, in electron-doped ones the ending point of AFM is still in controversy for different probes or its sensitivity to oxygen content. Here, by carefully tuning the oxygen content, a systematic study of Hall signal and magnetoresistivity up to 58 Tesla on optimally doped La2-xCexCuO4+-{\delta} (x = 0.10) thin films identifies two characteristic temperatures at 62.5+-7.5 K and 25+-5 K. The former is quite robust whereas the latter becomes flexible with increasing magnetic field, thereby linked to two- and three-dimensional AFM, evident from the multidimensional phase diagram as a function of oxygen as well as Ce dopants. Consequently, the observation of extended AFM phase in contrast to {\mu}SR probe corroborates an elevated critical doping in field, providing an unambiguous picture to understand the interactions between AFM and superconductivity.
