Abstract:Bamboo materials were pyrolyzed in TGA equipment (TGA/SDTA851e) at heating rate of 5,10,20,30 K·min -1 in the temperature range of 313～650 K and N_2 atmosphere.The pyrolysis process of bamboo consisted of three steps: pre-pyrolysis of water evaporation,first step pyrolysis and second step pyrolysis. The kinetics of bamboo pyrolysis was analyzed based on the Levenberg-Marquardt method. The first step of bamboo pyrolysis could be considered as the pyrolysis of semi-cellulose to volatile matter only and well described by a first-order reaction model.The second step of bamboo pyrolysis could be considered as the pyrolysis of cellulose and lignin to volatile matter and char,and well described by a parallel first-order reaction model.The first step of bamboo pyrolysis was dependent on heat-up rate,while the second step of bamboo pyrolysis was independent of heat-up rate.

Abstract:Pyrogenation studies were conducted on the bamboo by proximate analysis and thermogravimetry analysis.The conclusion shows that the sample has the high volatile matter content and low ash content.As the heating rate increasing,the max weightless rate increases.The temperature which the max weightless rate reaches heightens.The DTG curve moves to the high temperature.When the pyrogenation is conducted on the bamboo at the heating rate of 20℃/min,it is beneficial to increase the bamboo carbon yield rate.The subsection curve fitting and global curve fitting were done on the pyrogenation respectively.At the subsection curve fitting stage,the order of the reaction in the first stage is 0.5.The order of the reaction in the second stage is 1.5 or 2.At global curve fitting stage,when the correlation coefficient of the reaction order is above 0.99,it can be thought that the pyrogenation of the bamboo is an entirety continuous reaction.There are two leading reactions stages in the pyrolyzation of the bamboo.The two stages are reaction stage which is mainly pyrolyzation of hemicellulose and which is mainly pyrolyzation of lignin.The pyrogenation of cellulose is through the whole reactive process.At the different heating rate,the activation energy and frequency factor increases.

Abstract:The pyrolysis kinetic analysis of the three pseudocomponents of biomass, namely cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, were investigated using a thermogravimetric (TG) analyzer. The multi-peaks method was used to fit the Gaussian distribution model of DTG curves. The activation energies of three pseudocomponents pyrolysis were evaluated using sinusoidally modulated temperature method. The results showed that the multi-peaks methods can fit the DTG curves of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin successfully. There was only one reaction stage for the pyrolysis of cellulose and hemicelluloses. There were two reaction stages for the pyrolysis of lignin. The average E was 112.6, 162.8 and 156.8 kJ mol−1 for cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, respectively.

Abstract:Cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin are the major components of lignocellulosic biomass, and fast and accurate measurement of the three components' content is beneficial for the efficient application of biomass. However, the current chemical dissolution and titration method was tedious and time-consuming. In this study, a quick determination method of three components in biomass was developed for determining their contents based on a photo-thermal thermo-gravimetric analyzer (PT-TGA). Cellulose was modeled using a single F1 model, while hemicellulose and lignin were fitted with two consecutive processes according to their pyrolysis characteristic with F2 and F1 models. Using the kinetic parameters obtained from the fast pyrolysis of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin on the PT-TGA, the contents of the three components in biomass samples were calculated by fitting the DTG curves with different peaks. Under the heating rate of 300 °C /min, the relative content deviation of the three components of rice straw was less than 2.00 % with the measurement time within 3 min. Furthermore, coconut shell and pine were used to verify that the maximum difference determined by the kinetic fitting method and the chemical method was only 3.32 %, demonstrating that the method could reliably and rapidly measure the contents of the three components in lignocellulosic biomass. This study provided a fast and effective method for determining the relative content of biomass components.

Abstract:The pyrolysis of typical components of biomass waste, cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, pectin and starch was performed and compared in a continuous-weighting fixed bed reactor acting as a macro thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), namely macro-TGA. The mass loss and mass loss rate with time derived from macro-TGA looks similar to TG curve and differential thermogravimetric (DTG) curve from TGA. Compared to those from TGA, the DTG peak of every sample pyrolysis on macro-TGA delayed, and only one main peak appeared on hemicellulose with macro-TGA. The residue of different samples was in decreasing sequence as lignin > pectin > hemicellulose > starch > cellulose. Furthermore, the pseudo-components model based on the TG/macro-TG curves simulation was analyzed and compared. The overlap ratios between raw TG/macro-TG curves and simulation curves through different methods were all higher than 0.977 at the heating rate of 10 °C/min to suggest that biomass waste pyrolysis characteristics could be well simulated by its components.

Abstract:The standard method for determining the biomass composition, in terms of main lignocellulosic fraction (hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin) contents, is by chemical method; however, it is a slow and expensive methodology, which requires complex techniques and the use of multiple chemical reagents. The main objective of this article is to provide a new efficient, low-cost and fast method for the determination of the main lignocellulosic fraction contents of different types of biomasses from agricultural by-products to softwoods and hardwoods. The method is based on applying deconvolution techniques on the derivative thermogravimetric (DTG) pyrolysis curves obtained by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) through a kinetic approach based on a pseudocomponent kinetic model (PKM). As a result, the new method (TGA-PKM) provides additional information regarding the ease of carrying out their degradation in comparison with other biomasses. The results obtained show a good agreement between experimental data from analytical procedures and the TGA-PKM method (±7%). This indicates that the TGA-PKM method can be used to have a good estimation of the content of the main lignocellulosic fractions without the need to carry out complex extraction and purification chemical treatments. In addition, the good quality of the fit obtained between the model and experimental DTG curves (R2Adj = 0.99) allows to obtain the characteristic kinetic parameters of each fraction.

Abstract:<p>The elucidation of the biomass pyrolysis characteristics will provide valuable guidance for the design of pyrolysis devices. The pyrolysis kinetics characteristics of lignocellulosic biomass were studied by thermogravimetric analysis, and the main influencing factors, including biomass particle size, heating rate, and metal ion, were investigated. With a decrease in the particle size of rice straw and pine sawdust, the initial and final pyrolysis temperatures and the temperature of the maximum weight loss ratio decreased. Opposite results were obtained for Phoenix tree leaves. Furthermore, the initial release temperature of volatile matter and the temperature corresponding to the peak of the derivative thermogravimetric curves increased with an increase in heating rate. Moreover, the pyrolysis activity of rice straw decreased significantly after deashing but increased with the addition of potassium. The pyrolysis kinetics parameters were calculated by the Coats–Redfern, Doyle, and the distributed activation energy model (DAEM) methods. The apparent activation energy of pyrolysis was the lowest, varying between 30 and 70 kJ/mol, according to the fitting results of the Coats–Redfern method. The apparent activation energies calculated by the DAEM and Doyle methods are similar, and are 67.6, 245.8, and 271.8 kJ/mol for rice straw, pine sawdust and Phoenix tree leaves, respectively.</p>

Abstract:The interactions of biomass components (hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin) during co-pyrolysis were investigated in a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) as well as a self-designed Macro-TGA with higher heating rate and larger amount of sample. The overlap ratio (OR) was used to evaluate the interaction of biomass components quantitatively. In TGA, the pyrolysis of xylan was not significantly affected by cellulose, whereas the pyrolysis of cellulose was markedly influenced by xylan. The interactions between xylan and lignin were weak with an overlap ratio of 0.9869, whereas co-pyrolysis of cellulose and lignin was strongly inhibited by interactions with the overlap ratio of 0.9737. In Macro-TGA, interactions between components were stronger than that in TGA due to more considerable heat and mass transfer effect.

Abstract:Thermogravimetric combustion characteristics of ginkgo leaves (GK), pine needles (PN), corn straw (CS), aspen leaves (AS), and white poplar leaves (WP) were studied. Results showed that the combustion of selected samples consisted of at least two weight loss stages. Besides, characteristic temperatures lagged towards high temperature zones under high heating rate, which was considered as the effect of insufficient transfer of heat. The combustion of volatile compounds and char from PN and CS was isolated under high heating rate and consequently the exothermic rate around 300 degrees C was intensified and the exothermic rate over 400 degrees C was decreased, while the maximum heat release rates of GK, AS, and WP were transferred into high temperature zones with the increasing of heating rate. The average activation energy of PN and CS was high though their combustion completed at a lower temperature, which was possibly due to the low average energy of molecules in samples in low temperature environment. The aromaticity, degree of condensation, CH2/CH3, and structure parameters of oxygen-containing functional groups were calculated according to the peak areas derived from the convolution of FTIR spectra. These parameters explained the discrepancy in both reactivity and exothermic behaviors of biomass samples during combustion.

Abstract:Kinetic research on the pyrolysis of lignin was carried out with thermo gravimetric analyzer(TGA)-coupled with a fourier Transform infrared spectrometry(FTIR) system.The typical microstructure of lignin was analyzed by infrared equipment coupled with tabletting pretreatment.Experimental results show that TG and DTG curves moved slightly towards higher temperature with the increase of heating rate,while the main reaction area widened.Lignin pyrolysis was divided into two stages,corresponding with 58.41 kJ/mol and 119.98 kJ/mol for activation energy,respectively.Compared with cellulose pyrolysis,online infrared analysis shows that the volatile produced by the lignin pyrolysis had more complicated composition distribution.CO,CH4 and furan appeared to release out during the whole pyrolysis process.

Abstract:Biomass is applied in power generation or heat production as renewable energy resources. This paper focused on the pyrolysis in thermogravimetric (TG) analyzer of three biomasses, corn cob, tree root and bagasse, which showed different characteristics on their differential thermogravimetric (DTG) curves. In pyrolysis of corn cob, tree root and bagasse, there were three, one and two obvious peaks of DTG curves, respectively. Thermogravimetric Fourier Transform Infrared (TG-FTIR) analysis showed that the maximum mass loss rate at DTG curves was mainly due to cellulose and lignin pyrolysis, and the second mass loss rate peak of corn cob and the first one of bagasse were mainly due to pyrolysis of hemicellulose; while the first mass loss rate peak of corn cob was most likely due to breaking off of OH stretching function groups and H2O generation of sucrose pyrolysis. The main typical gaseous products were CO2, CO, H2O, CH4, NH3 and acid & aldehydes (CH3COOH or furadelhyde). Quantitative FTIR analysis showed that CO produced variation and CO2 produced before 400 degrees C fitted with DTG curves well. IR results also indicated that hemicellulose pyrolysis had higher CH3COOH generation. Distributed activated energy model (DAEM) was applied to analyze kinetics of biomass pyrolysis. Similar to their DIG curves, the activation energy (AE) of corn cob showed four high distributions, in which the distributions of about 174.7 kJ/mol and 181.6 kJ/mol were highest (more than 20%), followed by that of 161.1 kJ/mol (18.91%) and 140.5 kJ/mol (9.08%); the AE of tree root had a distinctive distribution, which was as high as 33.9% at 181.6 kJ/mol; while that of bagasse had only two distributions more than 6.8%, one is 50.69% at 181.6 kJ/mol, and the other is 25.43% at 167.9 kJ/mol The pseudo-reactions fitting curves showed that the pyrolysis of corn cob was more complicated than the other two, because of more obvious pseudo-reactions contributed to the DIG curve and there were more than three main components in corn cob. It indicated that pseudo-reaction at 181.6 kJ/mol was mainly contributed to cellulose pyrolysis in DIG curves, and those at 161.1 kJ/mol and 167.9 kJ/mol were mainly contributed to hemicellulose pyrolysis, while pseudo-reaction at 174.7 kJ/mol might relate to the pyrolysis of sucrose. Abstract:The thermal degradation behavior and pyrolytic mechanism of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin are investigated at different heating rates from 10 Kmin−1 to 100 Kmin−1 with a step-size of 10 Kmin−1 using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) equipment. It is observed that there are one, two, and three stages of pyrolytic reactions takes place in cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin respectively. Isoconversional method is not suitable to analyse pyrolysis of hemicellulose and lignin as it involves multi-step reactions. The activation energies of the main decomposition stage for cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin are 199.66, 95.39, and 174.40 kJ mol−1 respectively. It is deduced that the pyrolysis reaction of cellulose corresponds to random scission mechanism while the pyrolysis reaction of hemicellulose and lignin follows the order based reaction mechanisms.

Abstract:The thermal behavior of three Colombian agricultural residues was studied by non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) at various heating rates. An approach using a combined kinetics parallel reaction model and model-free isoconversional methods proved to be suitable to determine the pyrolysis kinetic parameters of biomasses with different macromolecular composition and H/C and O/C ratios near 1.5 and 0.8, respectively. Fraser-Suzuki functions representing the derivative TGA (DTG) of hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin showed a very good agreement with the experimental data. The calculated apparent activation energy of biomass pseudo-components evidenced no dependence on the reaction extent in all the conversion range, validating the use of master plots for decomposition mechanism identification. Pseudo-hemicellulose, pseudo-cellulose, and pseudo-lignin showed to be close to a second-order kinetic model, a random scission, or an Avrami-Erofeev model and a high-order kinetic model, respectively. Comparing the three feedstocks, the apparent activation energy of the pseudo-components was in the order: bamboo guadua Ea < coconut shells Ea < oil palm shells Ea. The results show that even when sample elemental composition is very similar, macromolecular constituents, in particular lignin, could have an impact in the biomass decomposition rate and apparent activation energy. For the three studied materials, the model fitting error below 10% showed that the calculated kinetic parameters are suitable for the description and prediction of the biomass thermal decomposition.

Abstract:Pyrolysis is particularly attractive because it can convert lignocellulosic biomass into bio-oil, gases and solid charcoal in an efficient and environmentally friendly way. Determining the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters is fundamental to elucidate the reaction mechanisms and optimize biomass pyrolysis processes. The applicability and accuracy of kinetic and thermodynamic methods are systematically studied by analyzing theoretically simulated processes which simulate biomass pyrolysis processes and using statistical analyses. In terms of activation energy calculation, the Friedman method is capable of providing accurate activation energies, whereas the KAS and FWO isoconversional methods lead to some systematic errors in the resultant activation energies. The accuracy of the Kissinger method for estimating the frequency factor is dependent on the variation degree of kinetic parameters with conversion. The conventional method for determining thermodynamic parameters is based on the conversion rate peak temperature, which has no theoretical basis. Therefore, the concept of effective thermodynamic parameters is proposed, which are dependent on conversion and heating rate. And the thermodynamic analysis of the simulated processes is comprehensively investigated. Results revealed that the accuracy of the resulting thermodynamic parameters from the conventional method is dependent on the variation degree of kinetic parameters with conversion. It is expected that this study will provide an analysis framework and methodological guideline for the kinetic and thermodynamic analyses of biomass pyrolysis.

Experiments and kinetic analysis on the co-pyrolysis of cellulose and lignin

Abstract:The characteristics and kinetics of pyrolysis and co-pyrolysis of the cellulose and lignin were investigated using a thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA).The TG/DTG curves show that the pyrolysis process of lignin alone has two different temperature zones;the rapid pyrolysis of cellulose happens in the temperature zone of 300-380 ℃;mutual inhibition occurs in co-pyrolysis at the low content of cellulose(≤40%),and synergistic effect appears at the high content of cellulose(≥60%).The results of kinetics analysis testify that the process of pyrolysis and co-pyrolysis of cellulose and lignin can be described with a first order reaction model.The activation energy(E) increases with the content of cellulose increasing further,but its value is always lower than the activation energy of linear additivity(Ec),which partly illustrates that synergistic effect happens in the process of co-pyrolysis.

Abstract:Abstract Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) is finding increasing utility in investigations of the pyrolysis and combustion behavior of materials. Although a theoretical treatment of the TGA behavior of an idealized reaction is relatively straight‐forward, major complications can be introduced when the reactions are complex, e.g., in the pyrolysis of cellulose, and when experimental imperfections arise. Consequently, a fairly large number of analytical methods have been proposed for obtaining kinetic parameters from TGA curves. Among the proposed methods are several graphical procedures, mostly involving relatively inaccurate tehniques, such as obtaining slopes on a rapidly changing curve. Included among the proposed procedures is one which permits a linear plot of TGA data. The sensitivity with which such a plot can be used to identify and correct for a variety of experimental complications seems to have escaped even the proponents of the techniques. This paper provides an illustration of the use of this graphical procedure in a hypothetical first‐order pyrolysis typical of those occurring in the TGA behavior of cellulose.

Abstract:The large variations found in literature for the activation energy values of main biomass compounds (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin) in pyrolysis TGA raise concerns regarding the reliability of both the experimental and the modelling side of the performed works. In this work, an international round robin has been conducted by 7 partners who performed TGA pyrolysis experiments of pure cellulose and beech wood at several heating rates. Deviations of around 20 – 30 kJ/mol were obtained in the activation energies of cellulose, hemicellulose and conversions up to 0.9 with beech wood when considering all experiments. The following method was employed to derive reliable kinetics: to first ensure that pure cellulose pyrolysis experiments from literature can be accurately reproduced, and then to conduct experiments at different heating rates and evaluate them with isoconversional methods to detect experiments that are outliers and to validate the reliability of the derived kinetics and employed reaction models with a fitting routine. The deviations in the activation energy values for the cases that followed this method, after disregarding other cases, were of 10 kJ/mol or lower, except for lignin and very high conversions. This method is therefore proposed in order to improve the consistency of data acquisition and kinetic analysis of TGA for biomass pyrolysis in literature, reducing the reported variability.

Abstract:A method for the direct determination of the cellulose and lignin content of biomass has been developed. The method assumes that negligible interactions exist between biomass macrocomponents and it is based on the analysis of thermogravimetric (TG) pyrolysis data. The TG‐weighed sum method seems to be reliable and less time consuming than conventional methods for the determination of the cellulose and lignin content. Some limitations of the macrocomponent approach in the description of biomass pyrolysis are also discussed. In particular, hemicellulose pyrolysis data are analyzed. The use of xylans as substitute materials for hemicellulose have been critically examined. The results obtained point out that the widely practiced use of xylans as substitute compounds for the simplified description of hemicellulose pyrolysis can lead to significant errors. Cette méthode suppose l'existence d'interactions négligeables entre les macrocomposantes de biomasse et repose sur l'analyse de données de pyrolyse thermogravimétrique (TG). La méthode de la somme pondérée des TG semble être fiable et consommer moins de temps que les médiodes traditionnelles de détermination de la teneur en cellulose et en lignine. On décrit également certaines limites de la méthode des macrocomposants dans la description de la pyrolyse de la biomasse. En particulier, des données de pyrolyse d'hémicellulose sont analysées. L'utilisation de xylanes comme matériaux de substitution de l'hémicellulose a été étudiée de facon critique. Les résultats obtenus montrent que l'utilisation largement répandue de xylanes comme composés substituts pour la description simplifiée de la pyrolyse de l'hémicellulose peut entraîner des erreurs importantes.

Abstract:Kinetic research on the pyrolysis of model compound of hemicellulose was carried out in TGA-FTIR system. The typical microstructure of model compound was well verified by infrared analysis coupled with tabletting pretreatment. Experimental result shows that TG and DTG curves move slightly towards higher temperature with the increase of heating rate, while the main reaction area widens and the char yield rises. Xylan pyrolysis was divided into two stages, corresponding with 118. 59 kJ/mol and 66. 69 kJ/mol for activation energy respectively. Compared with cellulose pyrolysis, online infrared analysis shows that the volatile produced in the xylan pyrolysis has more complicated composition distribution. CO appeared to release out during the whole pyrolysis process, while CH4 was mainly produced by secondary cracking of primary volatile.
