Abstract:Grain boundary (GB) is the interface between different oriented crystals of the same material, and it can have a significant effect on the many properties of materials. When the average or entire range of grain size is reduced to less than 100 nm, the conventional plastic deformation mechanisms dominated by dislocation processes become difficult and GB mediated deformation mechanisms become increasingly important. One of the mechanisms that can play a profound role in the strength and plasticity of metallic polycrystalline materials is the heterogeneous nucleation and emission of dislocations from GB. In this study, we conducted molecular dynamics simulations to study the dislocation nucleation from copper bicrystal with a number of 〈1 1 0〉 tilt GBs that covered a wide range of misorientation angles (θ). We will show from this analysis that the mechanic behavior of GBs and the energy barrier of dislocation nucleation from GBs are closely related to the lattice crystallographic orientation, GB energy, and the intrinsic GB structures. An atomistic analysis of the nucleation mechanisms provided details of this nucleation and emission process that can help us to better understand the dislocation source in GB.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to track the Orphan star stream to a distance of 55 kiloparsecs (kpc) by observing and analyzing the position, velocity, and metallicity of RR Lyrae variable stars located near the Orphan star stream, and to study its metallicity distribution and spatial extension. Specifically: 1. **Tracking the Orphan star stream**: Use about 30 RR Lyrae variable stars classified as possibly belonging to the Orphan star stream to study the metallicity and spatial extent of the star stream. 2. **Metallicity analysis**: It is found that the RR Lyrae variable stars in the Orphan star stream have a wide range of metallicity, from - 1.5 dex to - 2.7 dex, with an average metallicity of - 2.1 dex. 3. **Metallicity gradient**: It is found that the part of the star stream at a distance of 40 - 50 kpc from the Sun is about 0.3 dex more metal - poor than the part within 30 kpc from the Sun, which indicates that there may be a metallicity gradient along the length of the star stream. 4. **The far end of the star stream**: The research range has been extended to 55 kpc. Even after careful searching, no RR Lyrae variable stars farther away are found to be members of the Orphan star stream, which may mean that the end of the front arm of the star stream has been detected. 5. **Model verification**: Compare the distances of RR Lyrae variable stars in the Orphan star stream with the best - fitting orbit proposed by Newberg et al. It is found that model 6 of Newberg et al. cannot explain the distances of the RR Lyrae variable stars at the farthest end of the Orphan star stream, while the Galactic potential field model with a total mass of \( M_{60} \sim 2.7\times 10^{11} M_{\odot} \) can better fit these data. Through these studies, the paper aims to support future research on the Galactic potential field, especially by providing a clean sample of accurate distances and radial velocities, and by excluding some previously considered models through new measurement results.
