Abstract:A review of the prospects of Dynamic Thermal Rating (DTR) of transmission lines for a reliable Power System Network is presented here. The generation of power not matching load demands have been an operational issue in many parts of the world. However, conventional generators and congested transmission lines cannot meet these challenges, hence a call for the integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES), first to complement the generation and second to meet up with the cutting of greenhouse gas emissions. As clean as they are, RES exhibit intermittency and need a technology that will consider this dynamism in wheeling out power from them. The operation of transmission lines has long been below their thermal and current capacities, but DTR technology deployment has shown to increase these capacities without the need to construct new ones. DTRs regulate line ratings adequately, safely, and securely based on real-time weather conditions beyond the traditional Static Thermal Rating (STR). It does this without infringing on ground clearance. In many works of literature, DTR enabled lines have been found to have high reliability, stability, improved capacity utilisation, Return on Investment, and effectiveness in power system planning and operations when incorporated with other smart grid technologies.
