Abstract:Methanol steam reforming (MSR, CH 3OH + H 2O → CO 2 + H 2) is an important means to produce hydrogen in-situ for fuel cell vehicles. Pd/ZnO is investigated to replace the commonly used Cu/ZnO catalyst that suffers from metal sintering at high temperatures. One of active component of Pd/ZnO is 1:1 Pd-Zn alloy and the reaction mechanism is still unclear. To explore the complex mechanism of this system, we systematically investigated a series of elementary steps starting from methanol decomposition over PdZn(111) with density functional theory PW91 functional and slab model. We identified the most favorable reaction pathways and found that the reactions of surface O and OH with CH 2O are critical for the catalytic selectivity towards CO 2.

Abstract:With the ever-increasing attention to clean energy and environmental protection, developing new energy sources becomes a strategic issue all over the world. Hydrogen energy is a clean and efficient energy source, and methanol steam reforming (MSR) is an important means to produce hydrogen. In this paper we review the theoretical studies of the MSR on Pd/ZnO during the past decade. We first review the investigations on the structures and compositions of Pd/ZnO catalysts modeled by Pd-Zn alloy. Then we summarize the work of adsorption and dissociation of water on the flat and stepped surfaces of Pd-Zn alloy. Surface chemistry of methanol, methoxy and formaldehyde on Pd-Zn alloy and other pertinent surfaces is described, followed by the discussion of the MSR reaction mechanism. Finally the conclusions and outlook are presented.

Abstract:PdZn alloy has been shown to catalyze methanol steam reforming (MSR), producing hydrogen gas and carbon dioxide with high selectivity. Despite many studies, the mechanism for MSR on this catalyst is still not completely understood. In this work, several possible pathways of MSR are explored using a plane-wave density functional theory. The focus is placed on the reaction network starting from a facile reaction between adsorbed formaldehyde and hydroxyl species, produced from the decomposition of methanol and water, respectively. These pathways were found to have barriers lower than the rate-limiting step, namely, the dehydrogenation of methoxyl, and they involve species that have been detected in various experiments. Interestingly, the reaction pathways share many similarities with the MSR process on copper, which is the traditional catalyst for MSR.

Abstract:Recent experiments suggested that PdZn alloy on ZnO support is a very active and selective catalyst for methanol steam reforming (MSR). To gain insight into MSR mechanism on this catalyst, plane-wave density functional theory calculations were carried out on the initial steps of MSR on both PdZn and ZnO surfaces. Our calculations indicate that the dissociation of both methanol and water is highly activated on flat surfaces of PdZn such as (111) and (100), while the dissociation barriers can be lowered significantly by surface defects, represented here by the (221), (110), and (321) faces of PdZn. The corresponding processes on the polar Zn-terminated ZnO(0001) surfaces are found to have low or null barriers. Implications of these results for both MSR and low temperature mechanisms are discussed.

Abstract:The formation and stability of PdZn/Pd(111) surface alloys have been studied, with emphasis on their interaction with CO, methanol and D2O, applying complementary techniques such as low energy electron diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, temperature programmed desorption (TPD), and polarization–modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy. PdZn surface alloys represent well-suited model systems for technological methanol steam reforming (MSR) catalysts. It could be shown that upon Zn deposition on Pd(111) at or below room temperature non-interacting Zn layers are formed first, that subsequently transform to PdZn surface alloys upon annealing above 473 K. At annealing temperatures above approximately 623 K the surface alloy starts to decompose, finally restoring the clean Pd(111) surface. TPD spectra reveal that methanol was decomposing to a significant amount on Pd(111), yielding CO and CHx (apart from H2), a process that did not occur on the PdZn surface alloys (i.e. methanol desorbed molecularly). This difference in part explains the improved catalytic properties (selectivity and stability) of PdZn catalysts for the MSR reaction.

Abstract:Pd/ZnO is a promising catalyst studied for methanol steam reforming (MSR) and the 1 : 1 PdZn alloy is demonstrated to be the active component. It is believed that MSR starts from methanol dehydrogenation to methoxy. Previous studies of methanol dehydrogenation on the ideal PdZn(111) surface show that methanol adsorbs weakly on the PdZn(111) surface and it is hard for methanol to transform into methoxy because of the high dehydrogenation barrier, indicating that the catalyst model is not appropriate for investigating the first step of MSR. Using the model derived from our recent kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, we examined the process CH3OH → CH3O → CH2O → CHO → CO. Compared with the ideal model, methanol adsorbs much more strongly and the barrier from CH3OH → CH3O is much lower on the kMC model. On the other hand, the C-H bond breaking of CH3O, CH2O and CHO becomes harder. We show that co-adsorbed water is important for refreshing the active sites. The present study shows that the first MSR step most likely takes place on three-fold hollow sites formed by Zn atoms, and the inhomogeneity of the PdZn alloy may exert significant influences on reactions.
First-principles Study Towards the Reactivity of the Pd(111) Surface with Low Zn Deposition.

Abstract:Methanol steam reforming (MSR) is an important means to produce hydrogen. While metal Pd shows no selectivity to MSR, PdZn alloy exhibits both high selectivity and activity towards this process. Recently a high temperature desorption peak of formaldehyde is observed when methanol is dosed onto Pd(111) surfaces on which 0.03-0.06 monolayer Zn is deposited. Strikingly such surface which is predominated by Pd atoms was suspected to be active for MSR. To determine the structure on which the high desorption peak is observed and its performance to MSR, we studied adsorption and dehydrogenation of formaldehyde on various models. It is demonstrated that the high desorption peak of CH(2)O may originate from the supported surface clusters. The calculated energy barriers of CH(2)O dehydrogenation show that while formaldehyde can decompose easily into formyl on the supported PdZn and Pd(2) clusters, this process is kinetically difficult on the surface Zn(3) clusters. It is further revealed that formation of dioxymethylene, the proposed precursor for CO(2) production, from formaldehyde and oxygen is feasible on the surface Zn cluster. Based on these calculations we predict that compared with 1:1 PdZn alloy, the activity of the Zn clusters to MSR is lower, though its selectivity may be higher.

Abstract:Recently, it was proposed that the different behavior of water on PdZn multilayer and monolayer is responsible for the different selectivity toward CO(2) in methanol steam reforming process on the Zn deposited Pd surface annealed at different temperatures. [Angew. Chem. 2010, 49 (18), 3224-3227.] To explore this interesting and important phenomenon, we investigate water adsorption and dissociation in various aggregation forms on PdZn multi- and monolayer model surface alloys of both flat and stepped surfaces, using density functional theory and slab models. Our calculations show that the water is more stable on the multilayer. Surface defects and aggregation favor H(2)O dissociation. Contrary to the point of view that PdZn monolayer cannot activate H(2)O whereas multilayer can, our first-principles results clearly demonstrate that the multilayer is less active for water dissociation than the monolayer. This discrepancy calls for further studies on this system both experimentally and theoretically.

Abstract:Methanol is the future and clean fuel, and its chemistry on metal surfaces has received much attention. In this paper we explore methanol dissociation on the clean and O or OH covered PdZn(111) that mimics Pd∕ZnO catalyst studied as a promising catalyst for methanol steam reforming, using density functional theory at PW91 level and slab model. Our study demonstrates that unlike the situation on Pd (111), methanol preferentially undergoes the O-H bond scission on the PdZn (111). The presence of O and OH species hinders the C-H bond dissociation, but significantly reduces the O-H bond-breaking barrier. The present results indicate that in the course of methanol steam reforming, methanol first loses the hydrogen atom of the hydroxyl group, forming methoxy. This step is greatly enhanced when there are O and∕or OH species (i.e., after water dissociation happens). Analyses reveal that CH2O is formed mainly from CH3O, not from CH2OH.

Abstract:Methanol steam reforming (MSR) is an important means to obtain hydrogen for fuel cells. Pd/ZnO is a potential catalyst for MSR. 1:1 PdZn alloy was believed to be an active component for the reaction. However, recent experiments indicate the 1:1 PdZn alloy may not be very active for MSR. To explore the structure of the active phase of the catalyst, we calculated the adsorption of CO at different surface alloys using DFT and slab models. We examined the influence of Zn position on CO adsorption and discussed the dependence of ligand effect on the Zn position and the adsorption sites. We further studied methanol decomposition to CO at various alloy films. Finally we investigated adsorption of formaldehyde on Pd-Zn islands. The calculated binding energy with this model agrees nicely with the estimated value based on the TPD experiment. Thus we well explain the experimentally observed TPD peak of CH2O.
Microscopic Models of PdZn Alloy Catalysts: Structure and Reactivity in Methanol Decomposition.

Abstract:We review systematic experimental and theoretical efforts that explored formation, structure and reactivity of PdZn catalysts for methanol steam reforming, a material recently proposed to be superior to the industrially used Cu based catalysts. Experimentally, ordered surface alloys with a Pd : Zn ratio of approximately 1 : 1 were prepared by deposition of thin Zn layers on a Pd(111) surface and characterized by photoelectron spectroscopy and low-energy electron diffraction. The valence band spectrum of the PdZn alloy resembles closely the spectrum of Cu(111), in good agreement with the calculated density of states for a PdZn alloy of 1 : 1 stoichiometry. Among the issues studied with the help of density functional calculations are surface structure and stability of PdZn alloys and effects of Zn segregation in them, and the nature of the most likely water-related surface species present under the conditions of methanol steam reforming. Furthermore, a series of elementary reactions starting with the decomposition of methoxide, CH(3)O, along both C-H and C-O bond scission channels, on various surfaces of the 1 : 1 PdZn alloy [planar (111), (100) and stepped (221)] were quantified in detail thermodynamically and kinetically in comparison with the corresponding reactions on the surfaces Pd(111) and Cu(111). The overall surface reactivity of PdZn alloy was found to be similar to that of metallic Cu. Reactive methanol adsorption was also investigated by in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for pressures between 3 x 10(-8) and 0.3 mbar.

Abstract:Methanol steam reforming, catalyzed by Pd/ZnO (PdZn alloy), is a potential source of hydrogen for on-board fuel cells. CO has been reported to be a minor side product of methanol decomposition that occurs in parallel to methanol steam reforming on PdZn catalysts. However, fuel cells currently used in vehicles are very sensitive to CO poisoning. To contribute to the understanding of pertinent reaction mechanisms, we employed density functional slab model calculations to study the decomposition of formaldehyde, a key intermediate in methanol decomposition and steam reforming reactions, on planar surfaces of Pd, Cu, and PdZn as well as on a stepped surface of PdZn. The calculated activation energies indicate that dehydrogenation of formaldehyde is favorable on Pd(111), but unfavorable on Cu(111) and PdZn(111). On the stepped PdZn(221) surface, the dehydrogenation process was calculated to be more competitive to formaldehyde desorption than on PdZn(111). Thus, we ascribe the experimentally observed small amount of CO, formed during steam reforming of methanol on the Pd/ZnO catalyst, to occur at metallic Pd species of the catalyst or at defect sites of PdZn alloy.

Abstract:Pt-based catalysts are widely used for hydrogen production from methanol steam reforming (MSR), but they show high CO selectivity. The reaction pathways of MSR on Pt(111) surface are systemically studied using density functional theory and kinetic Monte Carlo to reduce the selectivity of CO. The results show that CH3OH (g) → CH3OH* → CH2OH *→ CHOH * → CHO * → CO * → CO (g) is the main reaction pathway at 423–623 K and 0.1–10 atm with CH3OH: H2O of 3:1–1:1, and water is very difficult to dissociate. The difference between H2O* + * → OH* + H* and CH3OH* +*→ CH2OH * + H* is the key factor for MSR reaction on Pt(111) surface. The actual ratio of H2/(CO+CO2) is close to the theoretical ratio for MSR (2.91 vs. 3.00) when the energy barrier of H2O* + * → OH* + H* is smaller than that of CH3OH* +*→ CH2OH * + H* by 0.30 eV. The elimination of CO* is mainly from CO * + OH * → COOH*, and the ratio of CO/(CO+CO2) is 6.71%. These results may be useful for the design and optimization of Pt-based catalysts at low temperature for MSR reaction.

Abstract:We present a combined experimental and theoretical study for catalytic performance of Pt/Pd supported on ZnO rods for methanol steam reforming reaction (MSR) for hydrogen production. The samples were extensively characterized by Adsorption–Desorption of N 2 (BET), electron microscopy in scanning and transmission mode (SEM/TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature programed reduction (TPR), and mass spectroscopy (MS). Results, showed typical diffraction peaks corresponding to hexagonal Zincite structure and tetragonal PtZn, PdZn and PtPdZn alloys which were identified by XRD, HRTEM and the last structure by modeling simulation. The crystallographic characterization after catalytic testing indicates that intermetallic PtZn phase on Pt/ZnO sample was more stable in comparison to PdZn on Pd/ZnO catalyst. In addition, Pt stabilize the PdZn structure in the bimetallic catalyst. The catalytic reactivity measured from 200 to 450 °C, indicates that Pt/ZnO-rod sample possess superior catalytic activity from the series as completed on this study. The methanol conversion was tracked by mass spectroscopy concluding minimal changes in outlet signals which suggests samples are chemically stable throughout the complete catalytic reaction. Furthermore, the computer assisted density of states calculations indicate that electron donation from platinum into the zinc oxide support might be the explanation for better catalytic performance.

Abstract:Methanol steam reforming (MSR) is an attractive route for producing clean energy hydrogen. PdZn alloys are extensively studied as potential MSR catalysts for their stability and high CO2 selectivity. Here, we investigated the reaction mechanism using density functional calculations, mean-field microkinetic modeling (MF-MKM), and kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) simulations. To overcome the over-underestimation of CO2 selectivity by log-kMC, an ads-kMC algorithm is proposed in which the adsorption/desorption rate constants were reduced under certain requirements and the diffusion process was treated by redistributing surface species each time an event occured. The simulations show that the dominant pathway to CO2 at low temperatures is CH3OH → CH3O → CH2O → H2COOH → H2COO → HCOO → CO2. The ads-kMC predicted OH coverage is 2-3 times that of MF-MKM, while they produce similar coverage for other species. Analyses indicate that surface OH promotes the dehydrogenation of CH3OH, CH3O, and H2COOH significantly and plays a key role in the MSR process. The dissociation of water/methanol is the most important rate-limiting/rate-inhibiting step. The CO2 selectivity obtained by the two methods is close to each other and consistent with the experimental trend with temperature. Generally, the ads-kMC results agree with the MF-MKM ones, supporting the previous finding that kMC and MF-MKM predict similar results if the diffusion is very fast and adsorbate interactions are neglected. The present study sheds light on the MSR process on PdZn alloys, and the proposed scheme to overcome the stiff problems in kMC simulations is worthy of being extended to other systems.
Density functional investigations of methanol dehydrogenation on Pd-Zn surface alloy.

Abstract:Methanol dehydrogenation on Pd (1 1 1) and various Pd-Zn surface alloy films supported on Pd (1 1 1) have been investigated using density functional method in combination with periodic slab models. Calculations show that compared to Pd(1 1 1) the interaction between CH3O and the films is enhanced, whereas that for CH2O and CHO is weakened. Zn in top layer facilitates the CH3O stability. At variance, the subsurface Zn reduces the interaction of CH2O and CHO with the substrate significantly. Addition of Zn promotes the O-H breaking of CH3OH and the dehydrogenation of CHO but hinders the dehydrogenation of CH3O and CH2O. Comparison shows that the third-layer Zn atoms have essentially no effect on the reactions. Our calculations demonstrate that the experimentally observed 360 K desorption peak cannot be originated from CH2O adsorbed at flat Pd-Zn alloy surfaces, and it is very likely that CH2O combines preferentially with some species before decomposing, into CHO during methanol steam reforming if CH2O is an intermediate. Finally, we show that the newly proposed relationship between the energy of the initial states and transition states exhibits better correlation than the classical BEP relation.
Supported Single Pt1/Au1 Atoms for Methanol Steam Reforming

Abstract:The single Pt1 and Au1 atoms stabilized by lattice oxygen on ZnO{1010} surface for methanol steam reforming is reported. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the catalysis of the single precious metal atoms together with coordinated lattice oxygen stems from its stronger binding toward the intermediates, lowering reaction barriers, changing on the reaction pathway, enhancing greatly the activity. The measured turnover frequency of single Pt1 sites was more than 1000 times higher than the pristine ZnO. The results provide valuable insights for the catalysis of the atomically dispersed precious metals on oxide supports.
First-Principles Study on the Origin of the Different Selectivities for Methanol Steam Reforming on Cu(111) and Pd(111)

Abstract:Hydrogen is an attractive clean energy carrier as it is efficient, nonpolluting and inexhaustible for the future. Despite that considerable attentions have been focused on methanol steam reforming (MSR, CH3OH+H2O→CO2+H2) for hydrogen production in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) applications in the past decades, the controversy remains in the reaction mechanisms [1]. Among them, the selective conversion of methanol to carbon dioxide and hydrogen, instead of carbon monoxide, is crucial [2]. It was found experimentally that the selectivity of MSR reaction on copper is markedly different from that on palladium [3]. Copper catalyst, nearly completely transforming methanol to CO2 and H2, exhibits higher selectivity than palladium catalyst, which predominantly converts methanol to CO along with CO2 and H2. The origin of the distinct selectivity between Cu and Pd is however unclear, and this prevents further optimization of MSR catalysts for practical applications.To shed light on the reaction mechanism and selectivity of MSR, we present in this talk a systematic density functional calculations on Cu(111) and Pd(111) surfaces. A number of intermediates, elementary reaction pathways and corresponding transition states are studied and identified, and valuable insights into the MSR reaction and the origin of selectivity are illustrated. We find that the selectivity is controlled by the reactivity of formaldehyde (HCHO). On Cu(111), HCHO tends to react with the coadsorbed hydroxyl to form hydroxymethoxy, followed by decomposition to CO2 and hydrogen. Whereas on Pd(111), it is favorable to sequential dehydrogenation to CO and hydrogen. Finally, we represent a linear scaling relationship between the transition states energies and the final states energies for the elementary reactions involved in MSR reaction, and discuss its implication with the computational design and optimization of the heterogeneous catalysts [4].

Abstract:The development of hydrogen energy is widely recognized as a key approach to addressing the energy and carbon emission challenges. Methanol steam reforming is a promising hydrogen production scheme that can provide high-purity hydrogen. In this work, we studied the primary reaction mechanisms of methanol steam reforming over the Cu(111) and Cu(211) surfaces using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and microkinetic simulations. A detailed kinetic perspective on the reaction mechanism, which is often overlooked in previous research that relies solely on DFT calculations, is provided in the current work. Our findings reveal that under typical experimental conditions, the dominant mechanism on the Cu(111) surface is the methyl formate mechanism, while the H2COO dehydrogenation mechanism is dominant on Cu(211). The activity over the Cu(111) surface was slightly higher than that over Cu(211). Based on the degree of rate control analysis results, a reaction rate equation was derived to quantitatively explain the trend of activity under different operating conditions. It was also found that CO2 selectivity was significantly higher over Cu(211) than over the Cu(111) surface. Furthermore, based on the Wulff construction scheme, copper nanoparticle models with different sizes were constructed, and a detailed structure sensitivity study was executed. This comprehensive investigation sheds light on the mechanisms of methanol steam reforming reactions over the Cu(111) and Cu(211) surfaces, providing essential insights for the design of high-performance catalysts for hydrogen production.
