Abstract:As ammonia is the main component of PM2.5, long time series of ammonia emission characteristics are an important basis for studying the historical causes of PM2.5 pollution. In this study, the activity data of various anthropogenic ammonia emissions from 11 cities were collected in Zhejiang. The anthropogenic ammonia emissions inventory in Zhejiang was established using emission factors, and then a 1 km×1 km spatial grid distribution was carried out using ArcGIS software. The results showed that from 2008 to 2018, the ammonia emissions from anthropogenic sources in Zhejiang exhibited a downward trend, with an average annual decline rate of approximately 3.97%. The ammonia emissions were 108.52 kt in 2018, and the emission intensity was 1.03 t·km-2, in which there was 90.02 kt from agricultural sources and 18.50 kt from non-agricultural sources. The ammonia emissions of Hangzhou, Jiaxing, and Wenzhou were higher than those of the other cities, accounting for 14.72%, 11.86%, and 11.80% of the total ammonia emissions, respectively. The spatial distribution characteristics showed that ammonia emissions were mainly distributed in the northern part of Zhejiang, showing an emission trend of "high in the north and low in the south." Uncertainty analysis showed that the simulated average value of ammonia emissions was 108.37 kt, and the uncertainty range in the 95% confidence interval was -5.40%-5.60%.

Abstract:In this study, the characteristics of ammonia and their effects on secondary particulate matter (PM) formation were analyzed by region in Korea in 2020. The NH3 concentration was high in GJ (11.4 ppb), a neighboring agricultural area, followed by DJ (9.0 ppb) and SE (8.6 ppb), which are located in urban areas. On the other hand, BI (2.6 ppb) and JI (4.5 ppb), which are background regions, demonstrated a lower concentration than other areas. Seasonally, ammonia was high in spring and summer, and it generally increased when human activities are active. Therefore, it is believed that the ammonia in the atmosphere not only changes depending on local emissions, but also based on temperature-dependent phase distribution characteristics. For SE and GJ, regions with relatively high ammonia concentrations, investigations into the effect of ammonia on secondary PM formation were conducted. In both regions, the ammonium-to-sulfate mole ratio tended to increase with increasing ammonia or PM2.5 concentration. It can be assumed that the PM2.5 concentration increases as nitrates are formed under the ammonia-sufficient condition. The adjusted gas ratio is generally greater than 4, indicating that there is a lot of free ammonia. Thus, it is estimated that a reduction in ammonia would not be effective to restrain nitrate formation.

Abstract:Atmospheric ammonia is a significant pollutant throughout the year, necessitating standardized measurement and identification of emission factors. We performed a quantized evaluation of ammonia concentrations at various locations in and around Seoul, South Korea. The established testing methods of the Radiello Passive Sampler were used for ammonia sampling, and the method was validated using annular denuder sampling. Urban and suburban areas were studied to gain a deeper understanding of the factors responsible for ammonia pollution. This study aimed to establish the fluctuations in concentration over one year, by analyzing the seasonal and regional variation in ammonia concentration. Livestock and agricultural areas recorded the highest concentration of ammonia among all sites, with the highest concentration recorded in autumn. However, at most of the other studied sites, the highest and lowest ammonia concentrations were recorded during summer and winter, respectively. This study attempted to establish a correlation between ammonia concentration and temperature, as well as ammonia concentration and altitude.

Abstract:Abstract This study aimed to identify the factors causing NH 3 emissions in the South Korean Peninsula and West Sea region. To analyze the trends of NH 3 and other air pollutants, such as NO x , CO, and NR-PM 1 , we collected samples from six supersites across the peninsula, a roadside in Seoul, and the West Sea over different sampling periods, ranging from 1 month to 1 year. The highest NH 3 concentrations were found at rural areas, ascribed to agricultural activities, particularly NH 4 NO 3 decomposition at high summer temperatures. Areas with low population densities recorded the lowest NH 3 concentrations, attributed to the lack of anthropogenic activities. A roadside field experiment confirmed the close link between ambient NH 3 and vehicle emissions in urban regions by showing a strong correlation between CO and NO x concentrations and that of NH 3 . Moreover, we examined oceanic emissions near the eastern coast of South Korea in the West Sea. Long-range transportation studies confirmed that most of the pollutants (NH 3 , CO, and PM 1 ) were transported by wind from the northeastern region of China. A maritime origin study showed that oceanic emissions and NH 4 NO 3 decomposition in the atmosphere owing to high temperatures were the causing NH 3 pollution. These findings provided valuable insights into the emission sources of NH 3 in primary air pollutants in South Korea, highlighting the contributions of land-based and oceanic sources. Our study can help inform policymakers and stakeholders for developing effective regional air pollution control strategies.

Abstract:As a typical industrial and agricultural province, Shandong is one of China's most seriously air-polluted regions. One comprehensive ammonia emission inventory with a high spatial resolution (1 km × 1 km) for 136 county-level administrative divisions in Shandong from 2000 to 2020 is developed based on county-level activity data with the corrected and updated emission factors of seventy-seven subcategories. Annual ammonia emissions decrease from 1003.3 Gg in 2000 to 795.9 Gg in 2020, with an annual decrease rate of 1.2 %. Therein, the ammonia emissions associated with livestock and farmland ecosystems in 2020 account for 50.8 % and 32.9 % of the provincial total ammonia emission, respectively. Laying hen and wheat are the livestock and crop with the highest ammonia emissions, accounting for 23.3 % and 36.3 % of ammonia emissions from livestock and the application of synthetic fertilizers, respectively. Furthermore, waste treatment, humans and vehicles are the top three ammonia emission sources in urban areas, accounting for 5.0 %, 4.7 % and 1.3 % of total ammonia emissions, respectively. The spatial distribution of grids with high ammonia emissions is consistent with the distribution of intensive farms. Significant emission intensity areas mainly concentrate in western Shandong (e.g., Caoxian of Heze, Qihe of Dezhou, Yanggu of Liaocheng, Liangshan of Jining) due to the large area of arable land and the high levels of agricultural activity. Overall, prominent seasonal variability characteristics of ammonia emission are observed. Ammonia emissions tend to be high in summer and low in winter, and the August to January-emission ratio is 5.6. The high temperature and fertilization for maize are primarily responsible for Shandong's increase in ammonia emissions in summer. Finally, the validity of the estimates is further evaluated using uncertainty analysis and comparison with previous studies. This study can provide information to determine preferentially effective PM 2.5 control strategies.

Abstract:Abstract. Concentrated agricultural activities and animal feeding operations in the northeastern plains of Colorado represent an important source of atmospheric ammonia (NH3). The NH3 from these sources contributes to regional fine particle formation and to nitrogen deposition to sensitive ecosystems in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), located ∼  80 km to the west. In order to better understand temporal and spatial differences in NH3 concentrations in this source region, weekly concentrations of NH3 were measured at 14 locations during the summers of 2010 to 2015 using Radiello passive NH3 samplers. Weekly (biweekly in 2015) average NH3 concentrations ranged from 2.66 to 42.7 µg m−3, with the highest concentrations near large concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). The annual summertime mean NH3 concentrations were stable in this region from 2010 to 2015, providing a baseline against which concentration changes associated with future changes in regional NH3 emissions can be assessed. Vertical profiles of NH3 were also measured on the 300 m Boulder Atmospheric Observatory (BAO) tower throughout 2012. The highest NH3 concentration along the vertical profile was always observed at the 10 m height (annual average concentration of 4.63 µg m−3), decreasing toward the surface (4.35 µg m−3) and toward higher altitudes (1.93 µg m−3). The NH3 spatial distributions measured using the passive samplers are compared with NH3 columns retrieved by the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) satellite and concentrations simulated by the Comprehensive Air Quality Model with Extensions (CAMx). The satellite comparison adds to a growing body of evidence that IASI column retrievals of NH3 provide very useful insight into regional variability in atmospheric NH3, in this case even in a region with strong local sources and sharp spatial gradients. The CAMx comparison indicates that the model does a reasonable job simulating NH3 concentrations near sources but tends to underpredict concentrations at locations farther downwind. Excess NH3 deposition by the model is hypothesized as a possible explanation for this trend.

Numerical Analysis of Agricultural Emissions Impacts on PM2.5 in China Using a High-Resolution Ammonia Emission Inventory

Abstract:China is one of the largest agricultural countries in the world. Thus, NH3 emission from agricultural activities in China considerably affects the country's regional air quality and visibility. In this study, a high-resolution agricultural NH3 emission inventory compiled on 1 km × 1 km horizontal resolution was applied to calculate the NH3 mass burden in China and reliably estimate the influence of NH3 on agriculture. The key parameter emission factors of this inventory were enhanced by considering many experiment results, and the dynamic data of spatial and temporal information were updated using statistical data of 2015. In addition to fertilizers and husbandry, farmland ecosystems, livestock waste, crop residue burning, wood-based fuel combustion, and other NH3 emission sources were included in this inventory. Furthermore, a source apportionment tool, namely, the Integrated Source Apportionment Method (ISAM) coupled with the air quality modeling system Regional Atmospheric Modeling System and Community Multiscale Air Quality, was applied to capture the contribution of NH3 emitted from total agriculture (Tagr) in China. The aerosol mass concentration in 2015 was simulated, and results showed that the high mass concentration of NH3 exceeded 10 µg m−3 and mainly appeared in the North China Plain, Central China, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Sichuan Basin. Moreover, the annual average contribution of Tagr NH3 to PM2.5 mass burden was 14 %–22 % in China. Specific to the PM2.5 components, Tagr NH3 contributed dominantly to ammonium formation (87.6 %) but trivially to sulfate formation (2.2 %). In addition, several brute-force sensitivity tests were conducted to estimate the impact of Tagr NH3 emission reduction on PM2.5 mass burden. In contrast to the result of ISAM, even though the Tagr NH3 only provided 10.1 % contribution to nitrate under the current emission scenario, the reduction of nitrate could reach 95.8 % upon removal of the Tagr NH3 emission. This deviation occurred because the contribution of NH3 to nitrate should be small under a “rich NH3”environment and large under a “poor NH3” environment. Thus, the influence of NH3 on nitrate formation would be enhanced with the decrease in ambient NH3 mass concentration.

Abstract:Mitigating ammonia (NH3) emissions is a significant challenge, given its well-recognized role in the troposphere, contributing to secondary particle formation and impacting acid rain. The difficulty arises from the highly uncertain attribution of atmospheric NH3 to specific emission sources, especially when accounting for diverse environments and varying spatial and temporal scales. In this study, we established a refined δ15N fingerprint for eight emission sources, including three previously overlooked sources of potential importance. We applied this approach in a year-long case study conducted in urban and rural sites located only 40 km apart in the Shandong Peninsula, North China Plain. Our findings highlight that although atmospheric NH3 concentrations and seasonal trends exhibited similarities, their isotopic compositions revealed significant distinctions in the primary NH3 sources. In rural areas, although agriculture emerged as the dominant emission source (64.2 ± 19.5%), a previously underestimated household stove source also played a considerably greater role, particularly during cold seasons (36.5 ± 12.5%). In urban areas, industry and traffic (33.5 ± 15.6%) and, surprisingly, sewage treatment (27.7 ± 11.3%) associated with high population density were identified as the major contributors. Given the relatively short lifetime of atmospheric NH3, our findings highlight the significance of the isotope approach in offering a more comprehensive understanding of localized and seasonal influences of NH3 sources compared to emissions inventories. The refined isotopic fingerprint proves to be an effective tool in distinguishing source contributions across spatial and seasonal scales, thereby providing valuable insights for the development of emission mitigation policies aimed at addressing the increasing NH3 burden on the local atmosphere.

Abstract:Atmospheric ammonia (NH3) has great environmental implications due to its important role in ecosystem and global nitrogen cycle, as well as contribution to secondary particle formation. Here, we report long-term continuous measurements of NH3 at different locations (i.e. urban, industrial and rural) in Shanghai, China, which provide an unprecedented portrait of temporal and spatial characteristics of atmospheric NH3 in and around this megacity. In addition to point emission sources, air masses originated from or that have passed over ammonia rich areas, e.g. rural and industrial sites, increase the observed NH3 concentrations inside the urban area of Shanghai. Remarkable high-frequency NH3 variations were measured at the industrial site, indicating instantaneous nearby industrial emission peaks. Additionally, we observed strong positive exponential correlations between NH4(+)/(NH4(+)+NH3) and sulfate-nitrate-ammonium (SNA) aerosols, PM2.5 mass concentrations, implying a considerable contribution of gas-to-particle conversion of ammonia to SNA aerosol formation. Lower temperature and higher humidity conditions were found to favor the conversion of gaseous ammonia to particle ammonium, particularly in autumn. Although NH3 is currently not included in China's emission control policies of air pollution precursors, our results highlight the urgency and importance of monitoring gaseous ammonia and improving its emission inventory in and around Shanghai.
Seasonal Variation of Ammonia and Ammonium Aerosol at a Background Station in the Yangtze River Delta Region, China

Abstract:The measurement of atmospheric NH3 was conducted by mean of passive samplers from September 2009 to December 2010 at Lin’an regional background station located in the economically blooming Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region in eastern China. NH4 + in fine particles was also measured in 2010 at this site. The NH3 concentration ranged from 0.1 to 41.8 ppb, with the annual average of 16.5 ± 11.2 ppb in 2010. The daily NH4 + concentrations ranged from 0.02 to 19.2 μg/m 3 , with an annual average of 4.3 ± 3.5 μg/m 3 . NH3 concentrations were highest in summer and lowest in winter, showing positive correlations with agricultural activities and temperature. The highest concentrations of NH4 + were in autumn coinciding with the period of active open burning of agricultural residues. The mean mass ratio of NH3/NHx is estimated to be 0.8 ± 0.1 during 2010, indicating that NHx was mainly influenced by local sources around Lin’an. The air mass back trajectory analysis suggests that both local sources and long-distance transport played important roles in the observed ammonium aerosol at Lin'an. High NHx deposition in this regional background station suggests the urgency of reducing NH3 emission in the YRD region.

Abstract:Intensive animal agriculture is an important part of the US and North Carolina's (NC's) economy. Large emissions of ammonia (NH3) gas emanate from the handling of animal wastes at these operations contributing to the formation of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) around the state causing a variety of human health and environmental effects. The objective of this research is to provide the relationship between ammonia, aerosol optical depth and meteorology and its effect on PM2.5 concentrations using satellite observations (column ammonia and aerosol optical depth (AOD)) and ground-based meteorological observations. An observational-based multiple linear regression model was derived to predict ground-level PM2.5 during the summer months (JJA) from 2008–2017 in New Hanover County, Catawba County and Sampson County. A combination of the Cumberland and Johnston County models for the summer was chosen and validated for Duplin County, NC, then used to predict Sampson County, NC, PM2.5 concentrations. The model predicted a total of six 24 h exceedances over the nine-year period. This indicates that there are rural areas of the state that may have air quality issues that are not captured for a lack of measurements. Moreover, PM2.5 chemical composition analysis suggests that ammonium is a major component of the PM2.5 aerosol.

A Temporal-Spatial Analysis and Future Trends of Ammonia Emissions in China.

Abstract:Excessive anthropogenic activities have led to high-level ammonia loss and volatilization, which is regarded as a key factor in Chinese haze formation. In this study, a comprehensive analysis of ammonia emission estimations is accomplished at both temporal (1980-2016) and spatial (provincial) scales using a mass-balanced model, and emission projections through 2030 are also studied in different development scenarios. The results show that the ammonia emissions increased from 4.7 Tg N yr(-1) in 1980 to 11 Tg N yr(-1) in 2016, which is an approximately 2.4-fold increase. The cropland and livestock emissions are the largest contributors, as most reports show approximately 80% contributions; however, nonagriculture sources of fuel combustion, waste treatment and ammonia escape have grown rapidly in recent years, accounting for 14% in 2016. The spatial differences also reveal the complex heterogeneity in Chinese provinces. In addition, the emission intensities of major agriculture and non-agriculture sources are 0-80 kg N ha(-1) yr(-1) and over 100 kg N ha(-1) yr(-1), respectively, indicating a higher degree of ammonia concentration from non-agriculture emissions, which should attract wide concern. In terms of scenario analysis, emissions would reach 12.8 Tg N yr(-1) in 2030 under the currently developed model and 7.3 Tg N yr(-1) under a series of reduction policies; the spatial analysis also shows that the North China Plain has a 2.1 Tg N yr(-1) reduction potential. The results of this study provide new insights into ammonia emission estimations and a better understanding of the environmental impacts of ammonia emitted from different sources.
Importance of Gas-Particle Partitioning of Ammonia in Haze Formation in the Rural Agricultural Environment

Abstract:Ammonia in the atmosphere is essential for the formation of fine particles that impact air quality and climate. Despite extensive prior research to disentangle the relationship between ammonia and haze pollution, the role of ammonia in haze formation in high ammonia-emitting regions is still not well understood. Aiming to better understand secondary inorganic aerosol (sulfate, nitrate, ammonium – SNA) formation mechanisms under high-ammonia conditions, 1-year hourly measurement of water-soluble inorganic species (gas and particle) was conducted at a rural supersite in Shanghai. Exceedingly high levels of agricultural ammonia, constantly around 30 µg m−3, were observed. We find that gas-particle partitioning of ammonia (ε(NH4+)), as opposed to ammonia concentrations, plays a critical role in SNA formation during the haze period. From an assessment of the effects of various parameters, including temperature (T), aerosol water content (AWC), aerosol pH, and activity coefficient, it seems that AWC plays predominant regulating roles for ε(NH4+). We propose a self-amplifying feedback mechanism associated with ε(NH4+) for the formation of SNA, which is consistent with diurnal variations in ε(NH4+), AWC, and SNA. Our results imply that a reduction in ammonia emissions alone may not reduce SNA effectively, at least at rural agricultural sites in China.

Abstract:Ammonia has both direct and indirect impacts on important environmental issues including acid deposition, regional fine particles and eutrophication. Estimation of anthropogenic ammonia emissions will provide valuable information for the pollution control of acid deposition and regional fine particle. Based on the provincial activity data on N-fertilizer application, livestock farming, N-fertilizer production and populations, this paper uses emission factor method to estimate China's atmospheric ammonia emissions, analyzes its historical trends and presents its geographical distributions from year 1994 to 2006. The national total atmospheric ammonia emissions are estimated to be 11.06 million tons (Mt) in 1994, which increase quickly to 16.07 Mt in 2006. Emissions from livestock farming, N-fertilizer application, N-fertilizer production and human excreta have increased from 4.47 Mt, 5.94 Mt, 0.09 Mt, and 0.59 Mt in 1994 to 6.61 Mt, 8.68 Mt, 0.14 Mt, 0.65 Mt respectively in 2006. Livestock farming and N-fertilizer application are the most important ammonia emission sources, which contributed 40.79 and 55.53 percent of total emissions respectively in 2006. In 2006, the average ammonia emission intensity is 1.67 t x km(-2) but there are large variations among atmospheric ammonia emissions from each province. Emissions from provinces including Henan, Shandong, Hebei, Sichuan and Jiangsu accounted for 40.82 percent of national emissions.

Abstract:Based on the field survey and statistic large data,emission factor approaches was utilized to develop the agricultural ammonia emission inventory in Hangzhou City for the year of 2015.An 1 km× 1 km high precision grid spatial distribution was established and the spatial characteristics of the agricultural ammonia emission were investigated by analyzing the latitude,longitude,land use type,population density and geographic coordinates.The results showed that total emissions of NH3 in Hangzhou City for the year of 2015 were 54787.9 t.Livestock and poultry breeding and farmland are the main sources of ammonia emissions from agriculture,accounting for 86.7％ and 12.8％ of the total NH3 emissions.Among the main steps of the livestock ammonia emission process,the most important source was the housing of the solid waste,accounting for 52.8％ of the total ammonia emissions.Then was solid state storage,accounting for 35.1％.Ammonia emissions from nitrogen fertilization were mainly concentrated in Xiaoshan District,Jiande City,Linan City and Yuhang District.The ammonia emissions of straw compost and straw burning were not high,which closely related to the straw stalk comprehensive utilization ratio,accounting for less than 1％ of the total ammonia emission from agricultural.
[Characterization, Seasonal Variation, and Source Apportionments of Particulate Amines (PM2.5) in Northern Suburb of Nanjing].

Abstract:PM2.5 samples were collected from December 2017 to November 2018 at a northern suburb site of Nanjing. The concentrations of five amines, major water-soluble ions, organic carbon, and elemental carbon were determined. The five amines measured were methylamine, ethylamine, dimethylamine, trimethylamine, and aniline. The annual average of the total amine concentration was (54.2±29.2) ng·m-3. Among these, dimethylamine was the most abundant[annual average:(20.2±13.7) ng·m-3], followed by methylamine[annual average:(13.1±6.3) ng·m-3], trimethylamine[annual average:(8.6±4.1) ng·m-3], ethylamine[annual average:(6.3±4.1) ng·m-3], and aniline[annual average:(5.9±3.9) ng·m-3]. The total amine concentration showed explicit seasonal variations:summer > autumn > spring > winter. The amine concentration on polluted days was higher than that on clean days. This may be influenced by aerosol acidity, promoting the partitioning of gaseous amine into the particulate phase. Aerosol acidity was also the major reason for the higher concentration of amine observed in summer than in other seasons. During new particle formation events, the concentrations of amines increased substantially. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) was utilized to identify the potential sources of amines, identifying six sources:industrial emission, agriculture emission, biomass burning, automobile emission, secondary formation, and dust. Methylamine and ethylamine mainly originated from secondary formation and automobile emissions. Dimethylamine and trimethylamine mainly originated from biomass burning, secondary formation, and automobile emissions; Aniline mainly originated from industrial emissions and biomass burning. A significant seasonal difference is observed with respect to the sources of amines. In spring and autumn, road dust sources account for a relatively high proportion. In summer, secondary sources are the main sources of amines. However, the diurnal variations of amine are not evident, and the secondary source, motor vehicle emission, and biomass combustion are the three main influencing factors.

Abstract:Ammonia(NH3)can interact with other trace chemicals in the atmosphere,significantly impacting atmospheric chemistry and global climate change.China is a largely agricultural country with high consumption of nitrogen fertilizer and large livestock herds,resulting in high NH3 emissions.In this study,a comprehensive county-level inventory of Chinese NH3 emissions from 2013 to 2018 was compiled.Based on previous research,an estimate of NH3 emissions from household coal combustion was added to the inventory.The estimation of emissions from open biomass burning was improved by using a method based on fire radiative energy(FRE).The total NH3 emissions in China increased from 2013(9.64 Tg)to 2015(9.75 Tg),and then decreased to 9.12 Tg in 2018.Emissions from fossil fuels reached a peak value in 2018,accounting for 8.4％of total emissions,while fertilizer application and livestock waste were responsible for fewer emissions than in previous years,ac-counting for 27.7％and 49.9％of the total from non-fossil fuel sources,respectively.The highest emission rates were in central and southwestern China.Seasonally,NH3 emissions peaked in spring and summer.The inventory had a 1-km spatial resolution and a monthly temporal resolution,which confirmed its suitability for global and regional air quality simulations.

Abstract:Continuous measurements of atmospheric ammonia (NH3) were conducted using Ogawa passive samplers from February 2008 to July 2010 at an urban site and from January 2007 to July 2010 at a rural site in Beijing, China. NH4+ in fine particles was also collected at the rural site during 2008–2009. The field comparison between the Ogawa passive samplers and an active analyzer for NH3 conducted at the urban site assures the quality and accuracy of the measurements. The concentrations of NH3 at the urban site ranged from 0.7 to 85.1 ppb, with the annual average of 18.5 ± 13.8 and 23.5 ± 18.0 ppb in 2008 and 2009, respectively. The NH3 concentrations at the rural site were lower than those at urban site, and varied from 0.8 to 42.9 ppb, with the annual average of 4.5 ± 4.6, 6.6 ± 7.0 and 7.1 ± 3.5 ppb in 2007, 2008 and 2009, respectively. The data showed marked seasonal variations at both sites. The results emphasized traffic to be a significant source of NH3 concentrations in winter in urban areas of Beijing. This was illustrated by the strong correlations of NH3 with the traffic related pollutants (NOx and CO) and also by the bimodal diurnal cycle of NH3 concentrations that was synchronized with traffic. Similar patterns were not observed during the summer, suggesting other non-traffic sources became more important. At the rural site, the daily NH4+ concentrations ranged from 0.10 to 36.53 μg m−3, with an average of 7.03 μg m−3 from June 2008 to December 2009. Monthly NH3 were significantly correlated with NH4+ concentrations. Average monthly NH3/NH4+ ratios varied from 0.13 to 2.28, with an average of 0.73. NH4+ in PM2.5 was primarily associated with SO4−2 at the rural site.
Quantification and evaluation of atmospheric ammonia emissions with different methods: A case study for the Yangtze River Delta region, China

Abstract:Abstract. To explore the effects of data and method on emission estimation, two inventories of NH3 emissions of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region in eastern China were developed for 2014 based on the constant emission factors (E1) and those characterizing the agricultural processes (E2), respectively. The latter integrated the detailed information of soil, meteorology and agricultural processes, and derived the monthly information of emission factors and activity data. The total emissions were calculated at 1765 and 1067 Gg, respectively, and agricultural activities (livestock farming and fertilizer use) were estimated to contribute 74–84 % to total emissions in the two inventories. Clear differences existed in seasonal and spatial distributions of NH3 emissions. Elevated emissions were found in March and September in E2, attributed largely to the increased top dressing fertilization and to the enhanced NH3 volatilization under high temperature, respectively. Relatively large discrepancy between the methods existed in northern Yangtze River Delta areas with abundant croplands. The two inventories were evaluated through air quality modeling and available ground and satellite observation. With the estimated emissions 38 % smaller in E2, the average of simulated NH3 concentrations using E2 was 27 % smaller than that using E1 at two ground observation sites in the YRD region. At the suburban SHPD site, the simulated NH3 concentrations with E1 were generally larger than observation, and the modeling performance was largely improved indicated by the smaller NMEs when E2 was applied. In contrast, very limited improvement was found at the urban site JSPAES, as E2 failed to improve the emission estimation of local sources including transportation and residential activities. Compared to NH3, the modeling performance for inorganic aerosols was better for most cases, and the differences between the simulated concentrations with E1 and E2 were clearly smaller, at 7 %, 3 % and 12 % (relative to E1) for NH4+, SO42−, and NO3−, respectively. Regarding the satellite-derived NH3 column, application of E2 significantly corrected the overestimation in vertical column density simulation for January and October with E1, but did not improve the model performance for July. The NH3 emissions might be underestimated with the assumption of linear correlation between NH3 volatilization and soil pH for acidic soil, particularly in warm seasons. Three additional cases, i.e., 40 % abatement of SO2, 40 % abatement of NOX, and 40 % abatement of both species were applied to test the sensitivity of NH3 and inorganic aerosol concentrations to precursor emissions. Under an NH3-rich condition for most of YRD, estimation of SO2 emissions was detected to be more effective on simulation of secondary inorganic aerosols compared to NH3. Reduced SO2 would restrain the formation of (NH4)2SO4, and thereby enhance the NH3 concentrations. Besides the emissions, uncertainties existed as well in the limitations of ground and satellite observation and incomplete mechanism of gas to particle conversion applied in the model. To improve the air quality more effectively and efficiently, NH3 emissions should be substantially controlled along with SO2 and NOX in the future.

Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) can interact in the atmosphere with other trace chemical species, which can lead to detrimental environmental consequences, such as the formation of fine particulates and ultimately global climate change. China is a major agricultural country, and livestock numbers and nitrogen fertilizer use have increased drastically since 1978, following the rapid economic and industrial development experienced by the country. In this study, comprehensive NH3 emissions inventories were compiled for China for 1980-2012. In a previous study, we parameterized emissions factors (EFs) considering ambient temperature, soil acidity, and the method and rate of fertilizer application. In this study, we refined these EFs by adding the effects of wind speed and new data from field experiments of NH3 flux in cropland in northern China. We found that total NH3 emissions in China increased from 5.9 to 11.1 Tg from 1980 to 1996, and then decreased to 9.7 Tg in 2012. The two major contributors were livestock manure and synthetic fertilizer application, which contributed 80-90% of the total emissions. Emissions from livestock manure rose from 2.86 Tg (1980) to 6.16 Tg (2005), and then decreased to 5.0 Tg (2012); beef cattle were the largest source followed by laying hens and pigs. The remarkable downward trend in livestock emissions that occurred in 2007 was attributed to a decrease in the numbers of various livestock animals, including beef cattle, goats, and sheep. Meanwhile, emissions from synthetic fertilizer ranged from 2.1 Tg (1980) to 4.7 Tg (1996), and then declined to 2.8 Tg (2012). Urea and ammonium bicarbonate (ABC) dominated this category of emissions, and a decline in ABC application led to the decrease in emissions that took place from the mid-1990s onwards. High emissions were concentrated in eastern and southwestern China. Seasonally, peak NH3 emissions occurred in spring and summer. The inventories had a monthly temporal resolution and a spatial resolution of 1000 m, and thus are suitable for global and regional air-quality modeling.
