Abstract:AbstractBased on outcrops, well logs, and drilling cores, this study investigates the sedimentary characteristics and sedimentary evolution of the Lower Permian Shanxi Formation in the Bohai Bay Basin region. According to the lithology, stratal thickness, and sedimentary cycles, the shallow water delta in the Shanxi Formation can be divided into upper deltaic plain, lower deltaic plain, delta front, and prodelta subfacies. A series of paleogeographic maps have been constructed based on the contours of lithological parameters. The paleogeographic units include upper deltaic plain, lower deltaic plain, tidal flat, and lagoon. Three stages of the delta can be identified in the Shanxi Formation. In the early stage, the lithofacies comprises mainly cross-bedded fine sandstone, siltstone, mudstone, and coal seams. Three main river channels developed in the upper deltaic plain subfacies. The lower delta plain occupies the main part of the delta, with the characteristics of “a large lower but small upper plain.” In the middle stage, the delta continued to move southward and the distribution area of the upper deltaic plain increased significantly. The lithology is composed of medium-coarse sandstone, mudstone, and thick coal seams. In the late stage, medium-fine sandstone, thick mudstone, and thin coal seams can be identified. The spatial distribution range of the upper deltaic plain became the largest with four main river channels. The delta was then characterized by “a large upper but small lower plain” at this stage. The shallow water delta prograded from north to south, eventually transforming from an epicontinental-sea environment to a continental environment in the Bohai Bay Basin region during the Early Permian.
