Abstract:This work proposed a novel molecular-level superhydrophobic coating. The superhydrophobicity was achieved by using polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) as the low-energy substance and nanoparticles of metal organic framework (MOF) as the roughness-improving components. The nanoparticles were synthesized by using 2-aminoterephthalic acid as the ligand to obtain molecular level amination, and PDMS was molecular-level aminopropyl terminated prior to the coating preparation. These made the coating molecular-level superhydrophobic. Epoxy resin and triclosan were further used to improve the mechanical strength and to ensure the bactericidal property, respectively. These four components (NH2 -PDMS, NH2-MOF, epoxy resin, triclosan) were cured in onestep at mom temperature by using a "jointly shared" hexamethylene isocyanate (HDI) as the crosslinker via chemical interaction between isocyanate group in HDI and amino groups in NH2-PDMS and in NH2-MOF and hydroxyl groups in epoxy resin and in triclosan. The chemical immobilization of triclosan in the coatings avoids its leaching and is friendly to the environment. The as-prepared superhydrophobic coatings are mom temperature curable, fluorine-free and have excellent wear-resistant, antibacterial and antifouling performance. The coating can be prepared by simply brushing and spraying, and has a potential for large-scale industrial application.

Abstract:Using a combination of an aqueous layer-by-layer deposition technique, nanoparticle surface modification chemistry, and nanoreactor chemistry, we constructed thin film coatings with two distinct layered functional regions: a reservoir for the loading and release of bactericidal chemicals and a nanoparticle surface cap with immobilized bactericides. This results in dual-functional bactericidal coatings bearing both chemical-releasing bacteria-killing capacity and contact bacteria-killing capacity. These dual-functional coatings showed very high initial bacteria-killing efficiency due to the release of Ag ions and retained significant antibacterial activity after the depletion of embedded Ag because of the immobilized quaternary ammonium salts.

Abstract:We designed and synthesized a novel quaternary ammonium methacrylate compound (QAC-2) bearing a perfluoroalkyl tail on one end and an acrylic moiety on the other. Via one-step UV curing of QAC-2 and methyl methacrylate (MMA) with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as the cross-linker, we obtained cross-linked coatings with excellent antimicrobial property, as demonstrated by the total kill against both Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis) at a QAC-2 concentration as low as ∼0.06 mol % (∼0.4 wt %) relative to MMA, which was substantially lower than the QAC amount needed in the coatings containing QACs with a hydrocarbon tail. A zone of inhibition test confirmed that the antimicrobial effect was on the basis of contact killing and there was no leaching of antimicrobial species from the cross-linked coating. Abstract:In this article, the antibacterial properties and mechanism of waterborne UV cured acrylic coatings (WUV) modified by quaternary ammonium compounds (QAC) is discussed, as well as the changes in the antibacterial properties of QAC under the action of different additives. (60 wt% methanol, 60 wt% ethanol, and 75 wt% ethanol). And the chemical cross‐linking method is used to combine WUV with QAC. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transforms infrared spectrometer (FTIR), and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was employed to characterize the modified WUV. The antibacterial properties of three antibacterial agents in liquid coatings (WUV‐L) and cured coating films (WUV‐C) are investigated. The SEM images showed many irregular wrinkles appeared on the surface of modified coating films. The FTIR result showed the hydroxyl groups promoted the binding ability of the antibacterial agents and coating, and the XPS result revealed that the increase of −NR4+ concentration enhanced the antibacterial properties of coating films. The antibacterial properties of WUV‐L and WUV‐C improved with the increase of QAC. Theoretical antibacterial agents mass fraction of 5% or higher was found to have the highest antibacterial rate (>90.00%) for WUV modification, among, the WUV modified by QAC‐m60 is the best with the antibacterial rate reaching to 99.73% in WUV‐L and 99.67% in WUV‐C.

Abstract:Antimicrobial surfaces are important in medical, clinical, and industrial applications, where bacterial infection and biofouling may constitute a serious threat to human health. Conventional approaches against bacteria involve coating the surface with antibiotics, cytotoxic polymers, or metal particles. However, these types of functionalization have a limited lifetime and pose concerns in terms of leaching and degradation of the coating. Thus, there is a great interest in developing long-lasting and non-leaching bactericidal surfaces. To obtain a bactericidal surface, we combine µm-scale patterning of borosilicate glass surfaces by ultrashort pulsed laser irradiation and a non-leaching layer-by-layer polyelectrolyte modification of the surface. The combination of surface structure and surface charge results in an enhanced bactericidal effect against both Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli bacteria. The laser patterning and the layer-by-layer modification are environmentally friendly processes that are applicable to a wide variety of materials, which makes this method uniquely suited for fundamental studies of bacteria-surface interactions and paves the way for its applications in a variety of fields, such as in hygiene products and medical devices.

Abstract:Human health and industrial instruments have been suffering from bacterial colonization on the surface of materials for a long time. Recently, antibacterial coatings are regarded as the new strategy to resist bacterial pathogens. In this work, novel highly transparent and superhydrophobic coatings with extremely low bacterial adhesion and bactericidal performance were prepared by spray-coating hydrophobic silica sol and CuO nanoparticles. The coated glass showed high transmittance in 300-2500 nm with a maximum value of 96.6%. Compared with bare glass, its superhydrophobic characteristics resulted in a reduction in adhesion of bacteria ( Escherichia coli, E. coli) by up to 3.2 log cells/cm2. Additionally, the live/dead staining test indicated that the as-prepared coating exhibited excellent bactericidal performance against E. coli. Moreover, the as-prepared coating could maintain their superhydrophobicity after the sand impact test. The proposed method to fabricate such coatings could be applied on various substrates. Therefore, this novel hybrid surface with the abilities to reduce bacterial adhesion and kill attached bacteria make it a promising candidate for biosensors, microfluidics, bio-optical devices, household facilities, lab-on-chips, and touchscreen devices.

Mechano-Induced Assembly of a Nanocomposite for “Press-N-Go” Coatings with Highly Efficient Surface Disinfection

Abstract:Using antimicrobial coatings to control the spread of pathogenic microbes is appreciated in public and healthcare settings, but the performance of most antimicrobial coatings could not fulfill the increasing requirements, particularly the ease of preparation, high durability, rapid response, and high killing efficiency. Herein, we develop a new type of mechano-induced assembly of nanocomposite coating by simple "Press-N-Go" procedures on various substrates such as glassware, gloves, and fabrics, in which the coating shows strong adhesion, high shear stability, and high stiffness, making it durable in daily use to withstand common mechanical deformation and scratches. The coating also shows remarkable disinfection effectiveness over 99.9% to clinically significant multiple drug-resistant bacterial pathogens upon only 6 s near-infrared irradiation, which can be further improved to over 99.9999% upon another 6 s treatment. Abstract:In this study, a UV-curable anti-smudge cathodic electrophoretic coating was developed by free radical copolymerization of various acrylic monomers using heptadecafluorodecyl acrylate (FOEA) as a functional monomer to provide a low surface energy structure to the acrylate precursor. The precursor was then grafted with the synthetic double-bond terminated IPDI-HEA on the precursor, and finally dipentaerythritol penta/hexaacrylate (5-Acl) was introduced as a crosslinker for the subsequent cathodic electrophoresis and UV-curing process. The chemical structure and surface fluorine content of the fluorinated waterborne polyacrylate (FWPA) were confirmed by 1H NMR, FT-IR, and XPS, respectively. The surface morphology and roughness of the coating were assessed using SEM and AFM instruments. The contact and sliding angles of water, diiodomethane, and hexadecane were determined. The self-cleaning capability was demonstrated by measuring the oil-based and aqueous epoxy paints, as well as carbon powder sliding on the coated tinplate surface. The anti-graffiti property was also integrated with a red marker. The resistance to strong acid, salt spray, impact, friction, and bending were characterized. All these results showed remarkable self-cleaning and anti-graffiti capabilities of the as-prepared UV-curable electrophoretic coating. Meanwhile, the coating displayed exceptional robustness in resisting chemical corrosion and mechanical damage. This newly developed UV-curable anti-smudge cathodic electrophoretic coating has great application potential in various metal protection industries.

Abstract:With improvements in living standards, the demand for antibacterial self-cleaning coatings has significantly increased. In this work, self-cleaning coatings with antibacterial properties were fabricated by spray-coating a composite of fluorinated acrylic resin and Ag/SiO2 nanoparticles with quaternary ammonium salts. The synergistic action of the quaternary ammonium salts and silver nanostructures caused the coating to show a dual antibacterial effect. The Ag/SiO2 nanoparticles roughened the coating's surface and, in combination with the fluorinated chains, provided the surface a superhydrophobic self-cleaning property with a contact angle of 156° and a sliding angle of less than 2°. Notably, the composite coating withstood 100 abrasion cycles without losing its superhydrophobicity and the contact angle is still exceeded 150° after 60 h of immersion solutions with different pH values, demonstrating outstanding wear resistance and acid/alkali stability. The incorporation of nanostructured antibacterial agents was effective in improving the roughness and antibacterial properties of the low-surface-energy resin, resulting in a self-cleaning antibacterial composite coating. This method may pave a new route for the design of functional coating materials with excellent overall performance.

Abstract:Bacterial adhesion and colonization on the surface present a public health concern worldwide. To address this concern, surfaces are endowed with the ability to resist bacterial adhesion to surfaces and eliminate bacteria. In this study, a multifunctional superhydrophobic antibacterial surface is prepared by combining two composite fillers obtained by in-situ growth of silica nanoparticles on palygorskite via sol-gel and modified by a low surface energy substance and by in-situ reduction of silver nanoparticles via tannic acid and thus adhering to the palygorskite and modified by the low surface energy substance, reducing bacterial adhesion and survival in multiple ways. Firstly, the complex nano/micro structures and low surface energy of the superhydrophobic surface hinder protein adhesion and bacterial adhesion on the surface. Secondly, the sharp surfaces constructed by the nanofibers disrupt bacterial cell integrity, providing physical antibacterial action. Thirdly, the coating releases silver ions and reactive oxygen species, which are produced by silver nanoparticles, to chemically damage bacteria. Through the synergy of superhydrophobic surface and silver nanoparticles, the coating achieves good resistance to bacterial adhesion and is able to eliminate Escherichia coli (100.0 ± 0.1 %) and Staphylococcus aureus (99.8 ± 0.1 %). The coating also exhibits good mechanical properties , with silver ions still being released after 100 cycles of wear test. With its unique self-cleaning, anti-adhesive, anti-corrosion, robust mechanical properties, and antibacterial capabilities, the superhydrophobic coating holds a promising application prospect.

Abstract:Since the COVID-19 pandemic, efforts in the field of surface decontamination have been redoubled. Finding innovative self-cleaning devices has become a challenge, and several solutions have been proposed in the market in recent years. In this work, an optimized powder/suspension plasma spray process at atmospheric pressure, using a Triplex Pro 210TM torch, is implemented to produce Cu-TiO2 surface coatings on stainless steel. The purpose is to investigate the potential improvement of antibacterial efficacy by the reactive surface species generated from TiO2 photoactivity under irradiation. A water-based suspension, prepared with AnalaR NORMAPURTM TiO2, is used as a precursor to incorporate the photocatalyst into an antibacterial copper matrix. Surface antibacterial tests according to ASTM 2180 standards were performed, and experiments were performed in treated contaminated water. Sub-stoichiometric blue TiO2 coatings showed complete bacterial elimination after 90 min of visible light irradiation, and Cu-TiO2 surface coatings were even able to disinfect the surfaces under white light, making the application interesting for bacterial destruction under natural illumination. These materials are also intended for application in water treatment, including both pathogens and chemical micropollutants, which is a pressing issue facing many countries today.

Preparation of A Low Contact Angle Water-Based Coating Using Ultrasonic Irradiation

Abstract:Purpose The key purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of different ultrasonic irradiation times on the wettability and other properties of the resulting water-based coating. The subject water-based coating was prepared using water-soluble polyester and amino resins by ultrasonic oscillation. Design/methodology/approach The coating was prepared by polymerising polyester and amino resins in water using ultrasonic oscillation. The coating was baked for 40 seconds at 350°C to coalesce and solidify the film. The contact angle, thermal stability and mechanical properties of the film, as well as the molecular weight (MW) and structure of the polyester resin, were determined. Findings The contact angle of the coating was found to decrease with ultrasonic irradiation; the mechanical properties and thermal stability were not altered when the irradiation time was longer than 5 hours. The MW of the polyester initially decreased then increased and stabilized with ultrasonic irradiation. The structure of polyester molecule and aggregated state of the solidified coating were not changed by ultrasonic irradiation. Research limitations/implications In the study reported here, the effects of different ultrasonic irradiation times were investigated. Results of this research could benefit in-depth understanding of the influence of ultrasonic treatment on polyester resins and polyester coatings and could further promote the development of water-based coatings. Originality/value The contact angle of the water-based coating decreased by mechanical means. The effects of ultrasound on microstructure and properties of the coating and resin were discussed in detail.
UV-Assisted Deposition of Antibacterial Ag–Tannic Acid Nanocomposite Coating

Abstract:The marked increase in bacterial colonization of medical devices and multiple drug resistance to traditional antibiotics underline the pressing need for developing novel antibacterial surface coatings. In the present investigation, natural polyphenol tannic acid (TA)-capped silver nanoparticles (TA–Ag NPs) were synthesized via an environmentally friendly and sustainable one-step redox reaction under UV irradiation with a simultaneous and uniform deposition on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and other substrate surfaces. In the synthesis process, the dihydroxyphenyl and trihydroxyphenyl groups of TA actively participate in Ag+ reduction, forming co-ordination linkages with Ag NPs and bestowing the deposition on the PDMS surface. The physico-chemical features of TA–Ag NPs were characterized in detail. Microscopic examination, surface elemental analysis, and wettability measurements clearly reveal the decoration of TA–Ag NPs on the substrate surfaces. The modified PDMS surfaces can kill the adhered bacteria or resist the bacterial adhesion, and no live bacteria can be found on their surfaces. Most importantly, the modified PDMS surfaces exhibit predominant antibacterial effects both in vitro in the catheter bridge model and in vivo in a rat subcutaneous infection model. Abstract:Rapid self-healing of micro-configurations is an effective strategy to enhance the durability of superhydrophobic surfaces, however, this property is challenging to achieve. Here, a durable superhydrophobic coating with a precisely targeted self-healing ability to repair its' dual structure was developed by spray-coating a polyimine film with a mixture of novel fluorinated epoxy resin and Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2 nanoparticles. The superhydrophobic surface can heal both the broken morphology and wettability through a short irradiation process on account of its local photothermal conversion ability and dynamic imine bond, and can maintain the static water contact angle at a value higher than 159° even after six damage/healing cycles. Furthermore, superhydrophobic coatings can be controllably degraded in three ways. Additionally, because of the robust epoxy resin protection, the surface can withstand sixteen times the dynamic impact and still maintain a WCA greater than 150°. This preparation strategy may aid the fabrication of durable superhydrophobic surfaces for various practical applications.

Abstract:Since bacterial infections are the cause of many diseases, death, and disability, considerable attention has been paid to the preparation of antibacterial surfaces. Anti-adhesive and bactericidal synergistic surfaces show promising antimicrobial applications due to the removal and killing effect of microorganisms. Herein, we proposed a leather coating surface with hydrophobic and photocatalytic antibacterial properties. Dendritic fibrous nanosilica (DFNS) loaded with carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and MoS2 QDs (2) nanoparticles were successfully prepared, which exhibited excellent photocatalytic antibacterial activity. Specifically, the 2 nanoparticles exhibited antibacterial activities of 99.98%, 95.35%, and 99.99% against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Aspergillus niger, respectively. Then, hydrophobic waterborne polyurethane acrylate (HWPUA) was developed, which exhibited enhanced bacterial adhesion resistance. Furthermore, the HWPUA/2 coating completely inactivated the residual bacterial cells. Therefore, the synergistic antibacterial coatings developed in this work could have potential applications as antibacterial surfaces.

Abstract:Anti-smudge coatings are recognized as being strongly desirable because they are able to repel numerous contaminants and maintain surfaces spotless without cleaning. However, a simple preparation process suitable for various substrates has rarely been reported. Herein, a novel UV-curable transparent anti-smudge coating with adjustable wetting properties was prepared. Introducing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as a low surface energy additive and trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) as a crosslinking agent to a polyurethane acrylate (PUA) skeleton results in a coating that shows dynamic dewetting performance as well as extensive repellency to water- and oil-borne contaminants, including graffiti, ink, cooking oil, and salt solution. Additionally, owing to the advantages of a non-thermal and rapid UV-curing strategy, the obtained coating can be applied to a variety of substrates including heat-sensitive materials. This study provides unique insights into the design and fabrication of functional coatings aimed at dewetting surfaces, membrane separation, and petroleum and biomedical engineering applications.

Abstract:An antimicrobial coating consisting of antifouling host polymer, thermal‐responsive guest polymer, and bactericidal Ag nanoparticles is prepared. The coating possesses great antifouling and bactericidal functions. The adhered bacteria could be released efficiently with a stimuli of temperature or light. The functions of the surface can be restored after cyclic use via rebuilding the coating by successive dissociation and re‐association of the host‐guest interactions. The adhesion and proliferation of the bacteria on biomedical surfaces have posed a great threat to patients. Developing a class of renewable bactericidal surface with excellent bacteria release capability is crucial for elongating the service life of the biomedical devices. However, releasing the bacteria fast and frequently is usually a trade‐off with releasing them thoroughly and completely regenerating the surface. Herein, a temperature/light dual‐responsive antimicrobial coating is developed. The cyclodextrin (CD)‐contained antifouling macromolecule and the thermal‐responsive azobenzene‐contained macromolecule are assembled on the CDs‐modified surface, combined with additional silver nanoparticles. The surface exhibits low bacteria attachments of 9.30 × 105 cells cm−2 (E. coli, 120 h), high bactericidal efficiency of ≈96.3%. Meanwhile, ≈86.9% of the attached bacteria can be released from the surface rapidly in response to temperature, and the residues can be thoroughly removed by irradiating UV irradiation (release ratio ≈91.0%). The functions of the surface can be resumed by switching the host‐guest network via light regulation. The 3rd regenerated surface still maintains low bacteria density of 12.4 × 105 cells cm−2, bacteria killing ratio of ≈95.0%, and bacteria release rate of ≈95.7%. The work is supposed to provide a new insight into the design of multifunctional antibacterial surface and broaden their applications.

Abstract:Abstract Surface‐independent smart antibacterial coatings with on‐demand antibiotics release profiles have attracted increasing attention in medical instruments, antibiotics delivery platforms, and implanted devices. Although several approaches have been well documented, the facile preparation of antibacterial coatings onto universal substrates with high antibiotics loading efficiencies, tunable drug release profiles, and excellent antibacterial performances is still met with many challenges, especially related to the redundant coating material synthesis and selective substrate fabrication process. To resolve this issue, the authors report a facile and robust fabrication method towards smart antibacterial coating surfaces on various substrates via a one‐pot integration of two types of naturally occurring building blocks, aminoglycosides and protocatechualdehyde in the presence of plant enzyme horseradish peroxidase. The simultaneous dynamic imine bonds formation and enzymatic polymerization within the system during the one‐pot reaction enable the facile fabrication of diverse surface‐independent smart antibacterial coatings, which can demonstrate several promising features including high drug loading and dynamic (i.e., pH‐responsive) properties, tunable and on‐demand antibiotics release behaviors, and efficient antibacterial activities both in vitro and in vivo. This work may offer new opportunities towards the robust and universal antibacterial coating materials by the bioinspired integration of all natural building blocks.

Abstract:This paper proposes the preparation and formula analysis of anti-biofouling Titania–polyurea (TiO2–SPUA) spray coating, which uses nano-scale antibacterial and photocatalytic agents, titanium dioxide, to construct regularly hydrophobic surface texture on the polyurea coating system. Through formulating analysis of anti-biofouling performance, it is found the causal factors include antibacterial TiO2, surface wettability and morphology in order of their importance. The most optimized formula group is able to obtain uniform surface textures, high contact angle (91.5°), low surface energy (32.5 mJ/m2), and strong hardness (74 A). Moreover, this newly fabricated coating can effectively prevent Pseudomonas aeruginosa and biofilm from enriching on the surface, and there is no toxins release from the coating itself, which makes it eco-friendly, even after long-time exposure. These studies provide insights to the relative importance of physiochemical properties of Titania–polyurea spray coatings for further use in marine, as well as bio medical engineering.

Abstract:Combining with various antibacterial mechanisms is the preferred strategy to fabricate coatings with effective antibacterial performance. Herein, Cu2O nanoparticles and dimethyloctadecyl [3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl] ammonium chloride, a kind of quaternary ammonium salt (QAS), were simultaneously incorporated into a moisture-curable acrylic resin in order to achieve both contact-killing and release-killing abilities for antibacterial coatings. The surface morphology, surface composition and basic properties of the coatings were thoroughly characterized. The antibacterial performance of the coatings was determined by in-vitro bacteriostatic test. Under the constant total mass fraction of antibacterial agents, both Cu2O and QAS content possessed the highest value on the coating surface at Cu2O/QAS mass ratio of 1:1, and correspondingly, the coatings reached sterilizing rate above 99% against both E. coli and S. loihica, indicating the existence of synergistic effect between Cu2O and QAS. The synergistic antibacterial mechanism of the coatings involved two aspects. Firstly, the combination of contact-killing and release-killing biocides resulted in high bactericidal and antibiofilm activity against different bacteria. Further, the grafting of QAS molecules on the surface of Cu2O particles brought about the spontaneous migration of nanoparticles to the coating surface. The interaction between Cu2O and QAS also inhibited the phase separation of QAS and prolonged the release of Cu2+ at the same time. The coatings, therefore, exhibited stable antibacterial performance at varied service conditions.
