Abstract:The heterophase solid–solid junction as an important type of structure unit has wide applications for its special mechanics and electronic properties. Here we present a first three-phase atomic model for the anatase–rutile TiO2 heterophase junction and determine its optical and electronic properties, which leads to resolution of the long-standing puzzles on the enhanced photocatalytic activity of anatase– rutile photocatalysts. By using a set of novel theoretical methods, including crystal phase transition pathway sampling, interfacial strain analysis and first principles thermodynamics evaluation of holes and electrons, we identify an unusual structurally ordered three-phase junction, a layer-by-layer “T-shaped” anatase/TiO2-II/rutile junction, for linking anatase with rutile. The intermediate TiO2-II phase, although predicted to be only a few atomic layers thick in contact with anatase, is critical to alleviate the interfacial strain and to modulate photoactivity. We demonstrate that the three-phase junction acts as a single-way valve allowing the photogenerated hole transfer from anatase to rutile but frustrating the photoelectron flow in the opposite direction, which otherwise cannot be achieved by an anatase–rutile direct junction. This new model clarifies the roles of anatase, rutile and the phase junction in achieving high photoactivity synergistically and provides the theoretical basis for the design of better photocatalysts by exploiting multi-phase junctions.

Abstract:New insight into junction-based designs for efficient charge separation is vitally important for current solar energy conversion research. Herein, an anatase-rutile phase junction is elaborately introduced into TiO2 films by rapid thermal annealing treatment and the roles of phase junction on charge separation and transfer are studied in detail. A combined study of transient absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical and photoelectrochemical (PEC) measurements reveals that appropriate phase alignment is essential for unidirectional charge transfer, and a junction interface with minimized trap states is crucial to liberate the charge separation potential of the phase junction. By tailored control of phase alignment and interface structure, an optimized TiO2 film with an appropriately introduced phase junction shows superior performance in charge separation and transfer, hence achieving ca. 3 and 9 times photocurrent density enhancement compared to pristine anatase and rutile phase TiO2 electrodes, respectively. This work demonstrates the great potential of phase junctions for efficient charge separation and transfer in solar energy conversion applications.

Abstract:Photogenerated charge separation is one of the key factors determining the solar energy conversion efficiency in photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis. Fabrication of phase junction has been demonstrated to be an effective strategy to construct the internal electric field for the charge separation. Phase junction is essentially a heterojunction, but more common in semiconductor-based photoelectric conversion systems, because most semiconductors exhibit the polymorphous structures. Because of the similar crystal structure between the two phases, phase junctions are more easily formed. The application of phase junction in photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis, especially the anatase–rutile TiO2 and α–β Ga2O3 phase junction, are summarized in this Feature Article. Abstract:Heterophase junctions have emerged as an effective strategy for spatial charge separation in photocatalysis. However, the photogenerated charge separation pathway at the junction region remains in doubt, and how the interfacial structure affects charge separation is unclear. Herein, we fabricate well-defined TiO2 heterophase junctions between rutile and anatase and employ in situ photochemical probing reactions to track the interfacial charges distribution by means of spherical aberration correction transmission electron microscope (CS aberration TEM). The photoreduction deposition of platinum (Pt) nanoclusters and photo-oxidation deposition of metal oxide nanoparticles demonstrate that the photogenerated electrons smoothly migrate across the interfacial phase junction from rutile to anatase phases and the photogenerated holes move in an opposite direction, which provides direct evidence on the spatial charge separation at the heterophase junction. Moreover, the atomic interfacial structure of anatase/rutile TiO2 heterophase junction formed is conducive for photogenerated charges moving from one phase to the other. This study revises the photogenerated charge separation at the anatase/rutile heterophase junction and demonstrates the important role of the interfacial structure on spatial charge separation.

Abstract:The heterophase junction is of great importance in photocatalysis and many other applications. The mechanical, optical and electrical properties of metrical are sensitive to the atomic structure of the heterophase junction. To date, the determination of these structures at the atomic level has been of great challenge for both experiment and theory. In this focused review, we introduce the recently developed theoretical methods based on stochastic surface walking method, which in combination with finite strain theory and first principles calculations can be utilized for identifying the homogeneous phase transition pathway and characterizing the atomic structure at the phase junction. The orientation relation and the atomic habit plane obtained from theory provide the key information for constructing the coherent phase junction. We then discuss the application of the method in two example systems in the context of latest experimental findings, namely TiO2-B/anatase and anatase/rutile heterophase junction that are of wide application in photocatalysis. Using these examples, the merits and deficiencies of the current theoretical tools are illustrated. New theoretical approaches are called for towards the simulation of the solid-to-solid phase transition in real time and the characterization of heterostructure junction in general.
Charge Separation Promoted by Phase Junctions in Photocatalysts

Abstract:Since the 1980s, photocatalysis research has expanded at an unexpected rate. Fabrication of phase junctions has proved to be an effective method to enhance photocatalytic performance. As a model photocatalyst, titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been extensively studied. This feature article mainly reviews the study on TiO2 surface phase junctions, including the characterization of the surface phases of TiO2, the use of anatase:rutile TiO2 phase junctions in photocatalytic hydrogen produc-tion, and the current understanding of how TiO2 phase junctions work in photocatalysis. The surface structure of TiO2 can be well characterized by ultraviolet (UV) Raman spectroscopy, unlike X-ray diffraction and visible Raman spectroscopy. Based on these results, the mechanism of phase trans-formation processes of TiO2 was clearly identified. The infrared (IR) spectra of probe molecules CO and CO2 on TiO2 further characterized the surface structure of TiO2, strongly supporting the UV Raman results. Furthermore, the typical visible emission of anatase and near-infrared emission of the rutile phase of TiO2 make photoluminescence (PL) a suitable technique to characterize the sur-face phase structure of TiO2. PL can also provide information about the carrier dynamics of TiO2 in photocatalysis. Because of the surface phase junction formed between anatase and rutile, the mixed-phase structure of TiO2 exhibits a superior H2 production activity to those of pure anatase or rutile phase. The activity of Degussa P25 TiO2 can be further increased by three to five times by tuning the phase structure through thermal treatment. Moreover, the phase transformation of TiO2 from anatase to rutile can be controlled by surface modification with Na2SO4, resulting in catalysts with activity six times higher than that of P25. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy provided a clear phase-junction image of TiO2, which showed atomic contact at the interface of the phase junction. The mechanism of phase junctions improving photocatalytic performance was in-vestigated by time-resolved spectroscopic techniques. The charge transfer process across the ana-tase: rutile phase junction was confirmed by the results of time-resolved IR measurements, and electron transfer from anatase to rutile phases is proposed to occur in mixed-phase TiO2. These studies on the phase junctions of TiO2 improve our understanding of photocatalysis and may inspire new ideas for the design of promising photocatalytic systems.

Abstract:Constructing effective interphase boundary is one of the efficient approaches for improving photocatalytic performances of semiconductor materials. In this work, an anatase/rutile-TiO2 (AR-TiO2) heterophase junction with appropriate carbon content was successfully fabricated via an in-situ phase transformation process. The phase transformation started from the inner core of the nanoparticles and the area of phase interface between anatase and rutile was carefully controlled by regulating the activation temperature. The well-established type-II band alignment between two TiO2 phases with residual carbon as additional charge transfer intermediary which significantly improved the light-harvesting and photoinduced electron-hole pair separation. As a result, the optimal AR-TiO2-550 catalyst (without adding commonly used Pt as co-catalyst) remarkably enhanced photocatalytic H2 generation (201 μmol h-1 g-1), which was about 12-fold to that of P25. The AR-TiO2-550 heterophase junction also showed long-term stability under simulated solar light irradiation. This research provides a new phase engineering route for developing high-efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:Phase junction is often recognized as an effective strategy to achieve efficient charge separation in photocatalysis and photochemistry. As a crucial factor to determine the photogenerated charges dynamics, there is an increasingly hot debate about the energy band alignment across the interface of phase junction. Herein, we reported the direct measurement of the surface potential profile over the interface of TiO2 phase junction. A built-in electric field up to 1 kV/cm from rutile to anatase nanoparticle was detected by Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (KPFM). Home-built spatially resolved surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SRSPS) supplies a direct evidence for the vectorial charge transfer of photogenerated electrons from rutile to anatase. Moreover, the tunable anatase nanoparticle sizes in TiO2 phase junction leads to high surface photovoltage (SPV) by creating completely depleted space charge region (SCR) and enhancing the charge separation efficiency. The results provide a strong basis for understanding the impact of built-in electric field on the charge transfer across the interface of artificial photocatalysts.
Time-Resolved Photoluminescence of Anatase/Rutile Tio2 Phase Junction Revealing Charge Separation Dynamics

Abstract:Junctions are an important structure that allows charge separation in solar cells and photocatalysts. Here, we studied the charge transfer at an anatase/rutile TiO2 phase junction using time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. Visible (∼500 nm) and near-infrared (NIR, ∼830 nm) emissions were monitored to give insight into the photoinduced charges of anatase and rutile in the junction, respectively. New fast photoluminescence decay components appeared in the visible emission of rutile-phase dominated TiO2 and in the NIR emission of many mixed phase TiO2 samples. The fast decays confirmed that the charge separation occurred at the phase junction. The visible emission intensity from the mixed phase TiO2 increased, revealing that charge transfer from rutile to anatase was the main pathway. The charge separation slowed the microsecond time scale photoluminescence decay rate for charge carriers in both anatase and rutile. However, the millisecond decay of the charge carriers in anatase TiO2 was accelerated, while there was almost no change in the charge carrier dynamics of rutile TiO2. Thus, charge separation at the anatase/rutile phase junction caused an increase in the charge carrier concentration on a microsecond time scale, because of slower electron-hole recombination. The enhanced photocatalytic activity previously observed at anatase/rutile phase junctions is likely caused by the improved charge carrier dynamics we report here. These findings may contribute to the development of improved photocatalytic materials.

Abstract:Phase-junctions formed in mixed crystalline phases of semiconductor based photocatalysts (TiO2 and Ga2O3) shows enhanced photocatalytic activity owing to efficient separation of photogenerated charges. However, the phase junction effect on charge separation has not been directly verified yet. In this study, we fabricated a prototype photovoltaic device based on TiO2 rutile/anatase coaxial nanorod arrays (NRAs) to demonstrate charge separation at the interface of polymorphic crystal phases. The device-FTO/rutile NRAs/anatase/ITO shows an ordinary photovoltaic response (open-circuit voltage V-oc: 154 mV, short-circuit current density J(sc): 1.76 mA/cm(2)), contrasting with photo resistor behavior of two TiO2 single phase devices of core-core (FTO/rutile NRAs/ITO) and shell-shell (FTO/anatase/ITO). Experimental evidences suggest that the built-in electric field at the interface of rutile/anatase phase junctions in the FTO/rutile NRAs/anatase/ITO device provides the direct driving force for efficient separation of photogenerated charges. The demonstrated strategy of fabricating phase-junction photovoltaic devices may inspire further investigations on new device converting solar into electrical energy and highlight the key role of the phase junction interface in the properties of the mix-phase photocatalysts. Abstract:To magnify anatase/rutile phase junction effects through appropriate Au decorations, a facile solution-based approach was developed to synthesize Au/TiO2 nanoforests with controlled Au locations. The nanoforests cons®isted of anatase nanowires surrounded by radially grown rutile branches, on which Au nanoparticles were deposited with preferred locations controlled by simply altering the order of the fabrication step. The Au-decoration increased the photocatalytic activity under the illumination of either UV or visible light, because of the beneficial effects of either electron trapping or localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Gold nanoparticles located preferably at the interface of anatase/rutile led to a further enhanced photocatalytic activity. The appropriate distributions of Au nanoparticles magnify the beneficial effects arising from the anatase/rutile phase junctions when illuminated by UV light. Under the visible light illumination, the LSPR effect followed by the consecutive electron transfer explains the enhanced photocatalysis. This study provides a facile route to control locations of gold nanoparticles in one-dimensional nanostructured arrays of multiple-phases semiconductors for achieving a further increased photocatalytic activity.
Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Performance from Rationally Designed Anatase/Rutile TiO2 Heterostructures.

Abstract:In a photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell for water splitting, the critical issue is charge separation and transport, which is usually completed by designing semiconductor heterojunctions. TiO2 anatase-rutile mixed junctions could largely improve photocatalytic properties, but impairs PEC water splitting performance. We designed and prepared two types of TiO2 heterosturctures with the anatase thin film and rutile nanowire phases organized in different sequences. The two types of heterostructures were used as PEC photoanodes water splitting and demonstrated completely opposite results. Rutile NWs on anatase film demonstrated enhanced photocurrent density and onset potential; while strong negative performance was obtained from anatase film on rutile NW structures. The mechanism was investigated by photoresponse, light absorption and reflectance, and electrochemical impedance spectra. This work revealed the significant role of phase sequence in performance gain of anatase-rutile TiO2 heterostructured PEC photoanodes.
Regulation of a rutile/anatase TiO 2 heterophase junction in situ grown on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes with remarkable photocatalytic properties

Abstract:TiO 2 (rutile–anatase, R–A)/Ti 3 C 2 T x heterophase junction (HPJ)–Schottky junction (SHJ) composites oxidized in situ by Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method using Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes as the Ti source and water as the solvent. There was no need for the induction and oxidation of other chemical reagents in the reaction, the reaction conditions were green and non-toxic, and the experimental operation was simple. The number of TiO 2 (R–A) HPJs and Ti 3 C 2 T x SHJs can be regulated by changing the reaction temperature and time. The optimized photocatalyst exhibited a large number of TiO 2 (R–A) HPJs attached to the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x . TiO 2 (R–A)/Ti 3 C 2 T x -200 °C-15 h showed a photocatalytic N 2 reduction efficiency of 59.35 μmol L −1 h −1 . The photoelectrochemical properties of the photocatalyst indicated that TiO 2 (R–A) HPJs and Ti 3 C 2 T x SHJs have synergistic effects on the separation of photogenerated charges. Under the condition of photoexcitation, the photogenerated charge generated by TiO 2 was separated at the rutile/anatase interface and transferred in the form of type II heterojunctions. Owing to the effect of Ti 3 C 2 T x SHJs, it can quickly transfer and store holes on TiO 2 . Thus, the photocatalyst had remarkable photogenerated charge separation efficiency; TiO 2 (R–A)/Ti 3 C 2 T x -200 °C-15 h had the strongest photocatalytic performance. Two-dimensional lateral anatase-rutile TiO 2 phase junctions with oxygen vacancies for robust photoelectrochemical water splitting

Abstract:Exploiting the photoelectrode materials with broad solar light response, high-efficient separation of photogenerated charges and abundant active sites is extremely vital yet enormously challenging. Herein, an innovative two-dimensional (2D) lateral anatase-rutile TiO 2 phase junctions with controllable oxygen vacancies perpendicularly aligned on Ti mesh is presented. Our experimental observations and theoretical calculations corroborate explicitly that the 2D lateral phase junctions together with three-dimensional arrays not only exhibit the high-efficient photogenerated charges separation guaranteed by the build-in electric field at the side-to-side interface, but also furnish enriching active sites. Moreover, the interfacial oxygen vacancies generate new defect energy levels and serve as electron donors, hence extending visible light response and further accelerating the separation and transfer of photogenerated charges. Profiting from these merits, the optimized photoelectrode yield a pronounced photocurrent density of 1.2 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE with Faradic efficiency of 100%, which is approximately 2.4 times larger than that of pristine 2D TiO 2 nanosheets. Furthermore, the incident photon to current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of the optimized photoelectrode is also boosted within both ultraviolet and visible light regions. This research is envisioned deliver the new insight in developing the novel 2D lateral phase junctions for PEC applications.

Abstract:An in-depth understanding of structure-activity relationship between the phase constitution and solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency is conducive to guiding the optimization route of targeted photocatalyst candidates, further establishing advanced photocatalytic systems. Herein, based on the concept of phase engineering, we encompassed the crystalline phase of CdS and achieved precise regulation of phase proportion as well as phase boundary width in the phase junction for the first time. The above cooperative effect not only modifies energy band distribution for sufficient redox potentials, but also guarantees the reverse migration orientation of photogenerated carriers in phase junction, thereby endowing photocarriers with a prolonged lifetime. Compared to pure cubic or hexagonal phase (72.6 or 101.1 μmol h-1 g-1), this CdS system with optimized phase junction demonstrates an improved photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of 1.04 mmol h-1 g-1 and favorable stability without cocatalyst assistance, which mainly stems from an efficient protons reduction process interacting with long-lived photogenerated electrons. This research explores the mechanism behind phase regulation and its relationship with junction capability, providing a powerful strategy to manipulate crystal phase distribution and paving a feasible avenue for other phase-dependent photocatalysts towards rational design of heterostructures based on different phases in solar energy conversion field.

Abstract:Heterojunction TiO2 has attracted great attention in photocatalytic applications due to its high efficiency in the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and strong ability of light absorption. This work concisely summarizes the distinct crystal phases of TiO2 and elucidates the prevalent methods employed in the synthesis of TiO2 heterojunctions. Abstract:Thin, planar nanojunctions between layered 2H/1T-MoS2 and graphitic C3N4 (g-C3N4) were fabricated and 1T phase nanojunctions allowed faster photogenerated electrons across the junction interfaces to facilitate hydrogen evolution. This research represents a proof of concept for the rational fabrication of thin 1T phase interfacial junctions and the importance of the 1T phase for further improving the HER perfomance.

Abstract:Although the surface phase junction can efficiently boost photocatalytic (PC) reactions, its role in photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) reactions has not been well-understood yet. In this study, we investigated the effect of the surface phase junction on the PEC performance of photoelectrodes fabricated with Ga2O3 and TiO2 particles. The surface phase junctions beneficial for PC reactions show a negative effect on PEC performance, which is mainly due to the significant influence of charge transportation between semiconductor particles by the surface phase junction. Photogenerated charge separation is promoted by the surface phase junction for both PC and PEC reactions, but the much more severe interfacial recombination occurs in the PEC reaction when charge carriers migrate across semiconductor particles to reach a conducting substrate. The opposite effects of the surface phase junction on PC and PEC performance reported here indicates that the fabrication of a heterojunction or phase junction in the right structure and sequence is vital to PEC systems based on junction, which will be helpful for the development of highly efficient photoconversion systems.
