Abstract:In early years of schooling, mathematics skills are very crucial to children’s success in their education as these skills could enable to predict later Mathematics performance and academic success in other domains. In addition to this, Mathematics learning and achievement depends not only on cognitive abilities, but also on emotional factors including attitude. Thus, the main objective of this study was to test if elaborative likelihoods model of persuasion could improve grade 4 pupils’ attitude toward mathematics. One hundred twenty students (62 boys and 58 girls) from four elementary schools in Gondar City were selected using simple random sampling technique. The elaborative likelihood model of persuasion was applied for 25 consecutive days in six phases. The results indicated that there was a significant increase in overall mathematics attitude score from pre-intervention to post-intervention. More specifically, there was a significant increase in self-confidence, and in valuing mathematics. Gender disparity which was observed before the intervention was narrowed and became non-significant after applying the elaborative likelihood model of persuasion. This indicated that the elaborative likelihood model of persuasion is a promising Social Psychology strategy to create a positive attitude toward Mathematics, to increase self-confidence on mathematics, and to narrow gender disparity in Mathematics attitude. Thus, educators should give due attention to ELM strategy of persuasion in order to improve pro-mathematics attitude among pupils in early years of schooling.
