Abstract:The development of porous composite materials is of great significance for their potentially improved performance over those of individual components and extensive applications in separation, energy storage, and heterogeneous catalysis. Now mesoporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with macroporous melamine foam (MF) have been integrated using a one-pot process, generating a series of MOF/MF composite materials with preserved crystallinity, hierarchical porosity, and increased stability over that of melamine foam. The MOF nanocrystals were threaded by the melamine foam networks, resembling a ball-and-stick model overall. The resulting MOF/MF composite materials were employed as an effective heterogeneous catalyst for the epoxidation of cholesteryl esters. Combining the advantages of interpenetrative mesoporous and macroporous structures, the MOF/melamine foam composite has higher dispersibility and more accessibility of catalytic sites, exhibiting excellent catalytic performance.
Hybrid 2D Dual‐Metal–Organic Frameworks for Enhanced Water Oxidation Catalysis

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF-derived nanostructures are recently emerging as promising catalysts for electrocatalysis applications. Herein, 2D MOFs nanosheets decorated with Fe-MOF nanoparticles are synthesized and evaluated as the catalysts for water oxidation catalysis in alkaline medium. A dramatic enhancement of the catalytic activity is demonstrated by introduction of electrochemically inert Fe-MOF nanoparticles onto active 2D MOFs nanosheets. In the case of active Ni-MOF nanosheets (Ni-MOF@Fe-MOF), the overpotential is 265 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) in 1 m KOH, which is lowered by approximate to 100 mV after hybridization due to the 2D nanosheet morphology and the synergistic effect between Ni active centers and Fe species. Similar performance improvement is also successfully demonstrated in the active NiCo-MOF nanosheets. More importantly, the real catalytic active species in the hybrid Ni-MOF@Fe-MOF catalyst are unraveled. It is found that, NiO nanograins (approximate to 5 nm) are formed in situ during oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process and act as OER active centers as well as building blocks of the porous nanosheet catalysts. These findings provide new insights into understanding MOF-based catalysts for water oxidation catalysis, and also shed light on designing highly efficient MOF-derived nanostructures for electrocatalysis.

Abstract:AbstractIt remains highly desired but a great challenge to achieve atomically dispersed metals in high loadings for efficient catalysis. Now porphyrinic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been synthesized based on a novel mixed‐ligand strategy to afford high‐content (1.76 wt %) single‐atom (SA) iron‐implanted N‐doped porous carbon (FeSA‐N‐C) via pyrolysis. Thanks to the single‐atom Fe sites, hierarchical pores, oriented mesochannels and high conductivity, the optimized FeSA‐N‐C exhibits excellent oxygen reduction activity and stability, surpassing almost all non‐noble‐metal catalysts and state‐of‐the‐art Pt/C, in both alkaline and more challenging acidic media. More far‐reaching, this MOF‐based mixed‐ligand strategy opens a novel avenue to the precise fabrication of efficient single‐atom catalysts.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) wrapped palladium nanoparticles supported on Fe 3 O 4 @catechol formaldehyde resin (Fe 3 O 4 @CFR@Pd@MOF) as magnetic nanohybrid catalyst was successfully fabricated by employing the redox capacity of CFR shell of Fe 3 O 4 @CFR core-shell microsphere for in situ formation of Pd NPs, followed by surface coating with Cu-MOF(HKUST-1). The research results demonstrated that the complementary properties of the various components within this hybrid material yielded magnetic recyclable nanocatalysts with exceptional catalytic performance. The Fe 3 O 4 @CFR@Pd@MOF catalyst exhibited remarkable advantages in the catalytic reduction of nitrophenol, demonstrating a transformation frequency (TOF) value of up to 4651 h -1 . Additionally, the nanocatalyst was proved to have robust catalytic capacity in the reduction of organic dyes and Suzuki-Miyaura reaction. The HKUST-1 framework played a triple role: facilitating dye enrichment, Cu 2+ assisting Pd NPs catalysis, and mitigating Pd NPs leaching. Moreover, the synthesized catalyst exhibited favorable magnetic properties, enabling facile separation by magnets for efficient recycling and reutilization.

Abstract:Metal‐organic framework (MOF) solids with their variable functionalities are relevant for energy conversion technologies. However, the development of electroactive and stable MOFs for electrocatalysis still faces challenges. Here, we design a molecularly engineered MOF system featuring a 2D coordination network based on mercaptan‐metal links (e.g., nickel, as for Ni(DMBD)‐MOF). The crystal structure is solved from microcrystals by continuous rotation electron diffraction (cRED) technique. Computational results indicate a metallic electronic structure of Ni(DMBD)‐MOF due to the Ni‐S coordination, highlighting the effective design of the thiol ligand for enhancing electro‐conductivity. Additionally, both experimental and theoretical studies indicate that (DMBD)‐MOF offers advantages in the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) over non‐thiol (e.g., 1,4‐benzene dicarboxylic acid) analog (BDC)‐MOF, because it poses fewer energy barriers during the rate‐limiting *O intermediate formation step. Iron‐substituted NiFe(DMBD)‐MOF achieves a current density of 100 mA·cm−2 at a small overpotential of 280 mV, indicating a new MOF platform for efficient OER catalysis. Abstract:Nanoporous carbons with tailorable nanoscale texture and long-range ordered structure are promising candidates for energy, environmental and catalytic applications, while the current synthetic methods do not allow elaborate control of local structure. Here we report a salt-assisted strategy to obtain crystalline nanocarbon from direct carbonization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The crystalline product maintains a highly ordered two-dimensional (2D) stacking mode and substantially differs from the traditional weakly ordered patterns of nanoporous carbons upon high-temperature pyrolysis. The MOF-derived crystalline nanocarbon (MCC) comes with a high level of nitrogen and oxygen terminating the 2D layers and shows an impressive performance as a carbocatalyst in Fenton-like reaction for water purification. The successful preparation of MCC illustrates the possibility to discover other crystalline heteroatom-doped carbon phases starting from correctly designed organic precursors and appropriate templating reactions.

Abstract:Even though manganese oxides are attractive materials for batteries, super-capacitors and electro-catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions, in most practical applications MnO2 needs to be hybridized with conductive carbon nano-structures to overcome its inherent poor electrical conductivity. In this manuscript we report microwave-assisted synthesis of MnO2 embedded carbon nanotubes (MnO2@CNT) from Mn-H3BTC (benzene-1,3,5-carboxylic acid) metal organic frameworks (MOF) precursors. Using graphene oxide as microwave susceptible surface, MnO2 nano-particles embedded in three dimensional reduced graphene oxide (rGO) -CNT frameworks (MnO2@CNT-rGO) were synthesized which when applied as electro-catalysts in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) demonstrated comparable half-wave potential to commercial Pt/C, better stability, and excellent immunity to methanol crossover effect in alkaline media. When carbon fiber (CF) was used as substrate, three-dimensional MnO2@CNT-CF were obtained whose utility as effective adsorbents for arsenic removal from contaminated waters is demonstrated.

Abstract:Abstract The poor electronic conductivity and low intrinsic electrocatalytic activity of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) greatly limit their direct application in electrocatalytic reactions. Herein, we report a conductive two-dimensional π – d conjugated Ni and Co bimetal organic framework (MOF)—NiCo-(2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaiminotriphenylene) (NiCo-HITP) nanorods decorated with highly dispersed Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs) as a promising bi-functional electrocatalyst towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) through an effective and facile strategy by modifying the rod-shaped -Ni 3 HITP 2 crystals using cobalt ions. The triggered electrocatalytic activity of the resulting MOF-based materials was achieved by increasing the electrical conductivity (7.23 S cm −1 ) originated from Ni 3 HITP 2 substrate and also by creating the cooperative catalysis sites of Co–N x and Co 3 O 4 NPs. Optimized syntheses show a promising ORR activity with a high half-wave potential (0.77 V) and also a significantly improved OER activity compared with pure Ni 3 HITP 2 in alkaline electrolyte. Furthermore, a rechargeable Zn–air battery using the as-prepared material as air-cathode also shows a high power density (143.1 mW cm −2 )—even comparable to a commercial Pt/C-RuO 2 -based battery. This methodology offers a new prospect in the design and synthesis of non-carbonized MOF bi-functional electrocatalysts for efficient catalysis towards ORR and OER.

Abstract:Carbon-based nanomaterials have been widely used as catalysts or catalyst supports in the chemical industry or for energy or environmental applications due to their fascinating properties. High surface areas, tunable porosity, and functionalization are considered to be crucial to enhance the catalytic performance of carbon-based materials. Recently, the newly emerging metal organic frameworks (MOFs) built from metal ions and polyfunctional organic ligands have proved to be promising self-sacrificing templates and precursors for preparing various carbon-based nanomaterials, benefiting from their high BET surface areas, abundant metal/organic species, large pore volumes, and extraordinary tunability of structures and compositions. In comparison with other carbon-based catalysts, MOF-derived carbon-based nanomaterials have great advantages in terms of tailorable morphologies and hierarchical porosity and easy functionalization with other heteroatoms and metal/metal oxides, which make them highly efficient as catalysts directly or as catalyst supports for numerous important reactions. In this perspective, we intend to give readers a survey of the research advances in the use of MOFs as self-sacrificing templates and precursors to prepare carbon-based nanomaterials, mainly including heteroatom-doped porous carbons and metal/metal oxide decorated porous carbons for applications as catalysts in energy and environment-related electrocatalysis and traditional heterogeneous catalysis. Finally, some perspectives are provided for future developments and directions of MOF-derived carbon-based materials for catalysis.

Abstract:The application scope of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be extended by rationally designing the architecture and components of MOFs, which can be achieved via a metal-containing solid templated strategy. However, this strategy suffers from low efficiency and provides only one specific MOF from one template. Herein, we present a versatile templated strategy in which organic ligands are weaved into hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) for the controllable and scalable synthesis of MOF nanotubes. HOF nanowires assembled from benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid and melamine via a simple sonochemical approach serve as both the template and precursor to produce MOF nanotubes with varied metal compositions. Hybrid nanotubes containing nanometal crystals and N-doped graphene prepared through a carbonization process show that the optimized NiRuIr alloy@NG nanotube exhibits excellent electrocatalytic HER activity and durability in alkaline media, outperforming most reported catalysts. The strategy proposed here demonstrates a pioneering study of combination of HOF and MOF, which shows great potential in the design of other nanosized MOFs with various architectures and compositions for potential applications.

Abstract:Controllable pyrolysis of metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) in confined spaces is a promising strategy for the design and development of advanced functional materials. In this study, Co-Co3O4@carbon composites were synthesized via pyrolysis of a Co-MOFs@glucose polymer (Co-MOFs@GP) followed by partial oxidation of Co nanoparticles (NPs). The pyrolysis of Co-MOFs@GP generated a core–shell structure composed of carbon shells and Co NPs. The controlled partial oxidation of Co NPs formed Co-Co3O4 heterojunctions confined in carbon shells. Compared with Co-MOFs@GP and Co@carbon-n (Co@C-n), Co-Co3O4@carbon-n (Co-Co3O4@C-n) exhibited higher catalytic activity during NaBH4 hydrolysis. Co-Co3O4@C-II provided a maximum specific H2 generation rate of 5,360 mL·min−1·gCo −1 at room temperature due to synergistic interactions between Co and Co3O4 NPs. The Co NPs also endowed Co-Co3O4@C-n with the ferromagnetism needed to complete the magnetic momentum transfer process. This assembly-pyrolysis-oxidation strategy may be an efficient method of preparing novel nanocomposites.
Engineering the Electronic Structures of Metal-Organic Framework Nanosheets via Synergistic Doping of Metal Ions and Counteranions for Efficient Water Oxidation

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets with attractive chemical and structural properties have been considered as prominent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts, while the insufficient exposed active sites and low electrical conductivity of MOFs limit their electrocatalytic activity and further industrial applications. Herein, a unique strategy to remarkably boost electrocatalytic OER activity of one Ni-based MOF is developed by the simultaneous incorporation of Fe3+ ions and BF4- anions within its layer structure. The optimized electrocatalyst NiFe-MOF-BF4--0.3 NSs shows superior OER activity with a required ultralow overpotential of 237 mV at 10 mA cm-2, a small Tafel slope of 41 mV dec-1, and outstanding stability in an alkaline medium. The experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results verify that the interactions between metal (M) ions and BF4- anions (defined as M···F, M = Ni or Fe) in this catalyst can adjust the adsorption abilities of oxygen intermediates and lower the free energy barrier of the potential-determining step by tailoring its electronic structure, thereby remarkably boosting its OER activity. This protocol provides new insights into surface and structure engineering of 2D MOFs, leading to greatly enhanced electrocatalytic OER performance.

Abstract:Porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are built from periodically alternate organic moieties and metal ions/ clusters. The unique features of the open framework structures, the high surface areas, the permanent porosity, and the appropriate hydrophilic and hydrophobic pore nature mean that MOF materials are a class of ideal host matrices for immobilization of molecular catalysts. The emerging porous materials can not only retain but are also able to enhance the catalytic functions of the single individuals. MOF catalysts have the following super characters: i) uniformly dispersed catalytic sites on the pore surfaces to improve the utility, ii) appropriate hydrophilic and hydrophobic pore nature to facilitate the recognition and transportation of reactant and product molecules, iii) a collaborative microenvironment to realize synergistic catalysis, and iv) simple separation and recovery for long-term usage. Accompanying the development of the synthetic strategies and the technologies for the characterization of MOF materials, MOF catalysis has undergone an upsurge, which has transcended the stage of opportunism. Here, the rational design and synthesis of MOF catalysts are discussed, along with the key factors of active sites, microenvironments, and transmission channels that lead to the distinct catalytic properties of MOF catalysts.

Abstract:Carbon-based materials hybridized with metal sulfides have gained growing attention as catalytic materials for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to their synergistic effects in terms of richer structural features and higher electrochemical activities. Here, a series of Zn/Co/Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as the precursors, which can be adopted as efficient ORR catalysts, were synthesized through a sulfuration–calcination treatment. The effects of precursor composition, heteroatom doping, and pyrolysis temperature on the structure and electrochemical performance of the catalysts were discussed in detail. It is found that well-grown carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the surface of graphitic carbon matrix are formed under the synergy effect of trimetallic-based species during pyrolysis. Benefiting from the three-dimensional unique structure with appropriate dopants and high porosity, the catalyst derived from the optimized Zn/Co/Fe-MOFs achieves a half-wave potential of 0.87 V in an alkaline medium for ORR, which is comparable with commercial electrocatalysts. In addition, an outstanding ORR durability of the proposed catalyst in alkaline media was also demonstrated. This work highlights the potential to rationally design and fabricate high-performance ORR catalysts for commercialization.

Abstract:Three isostructural metal-organic frameworks, (MOFs), [Fe(OH)(1,4-NDC)] (1), [Al(OH)(1,4-NDC)] (2), and [In(OH)(1,4-NDC)] (3) have been synthesized hydrothermally by using 1,4-naphthalene dicarboxylate (1,4-NDC) as a linker. The MOFs were characterized using various techniques and further used as precursor materials for the synthesis of metal/metal oxide nanoparticles inserted in a carbon matrix through a simple thermal conversion method. The newly synthesized carbon materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis, powder X-ray diffraction and BET analysis. The results showed that the MOF-derived carbon composite materials maintained the morphology of the original MOF upon carbonization, and confirmed the insertion of metal/metal oxide particles in the carbon matrix.

Abstract:The remarkable potential of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has garnered significant attention, primarily attributed to their unique and adjustable structural characteristics, which hold promise for various applications, including electrocatalysis. Nevertheless, utilizing MOFs directly in oxygen electrocatalysis presents a formidable challenge due to the intricate control needed to modulate their size, composition, and morphology while ensuring an abundance of active sites. Here, we present a straightforward synthesis method that generates novel NiCoFe-based trimetallic MOF nanostructures. These structures demonstrate exceptional catalytic performance in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under alkaline conditions when employed as catalysts. Specifically, the FeNi 2 Co 1 -MOF exhibits the crucial overpotential of 143 mV required to attain a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Hollow Spherical Superstructure of Carbon Nanosheets for Bifunctional Oxygen Reduction and Evolution Electrocatalysis

Abstract:The pyrolysis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an ingenious way to synthesize carbon-based materials with unique morphology for various applications including electrocatalysis. In this work, we reported a facile morphology regulation strategy for the synthesis of a spherical superstructure of MOF nanosheets. The use of metal hydroxide nanosheets on Zn particles as precursors/templates allowed MOFs with general polyhedron shape to form nanosheets and assemble into a spherical superstructure in the ligand solution. Further, a hollow spherical superstructure of carbon nanosheets decorated with metal-based nanoparticles was fabricated through the pyrolysis of MOF nanosheet superstructures at 950 °C, where the substrate/template Zn particle cores were evaporated away. The obtained composites possess carbon-based superstructures with abundant mesopores and metal-based nanoparticles with rich alloy/oxide interfaces. These features endow this MOF-derived carbon-based material with outstanding bifunctional activity for oxygen reduction/evolution reactions and great performances in Zn-air batteries.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of distinctive porous crystalline materials constructed by metal ions/clusters and organic linkers. Owing to their structural diversity, functional adjustability, and high surface area, different types of MOF-based single metal sites are well exploited, including coordinately unsaturated metal sites from metal nodes and metallolinkers, as well as active metal species immobilized to MOFs. Furthermore, controllable thermal transformation of MOFs can upgrade them to nanomaterials functionalized with active single-atom catalysts (SACs). These unique features of MOFs and their derivatives enable them to serve as a highly versatile platform for catalysis, which has actually been becoming a rapidly developing interdisciplinary research area. In this review, we overview the recent developments of catalysis at single metal sites in MOF-based materials with emphasis on their structures and applications for thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis. We also compare the results and summarize the major insights gained from the works in this review, providing the challenges and prospects in this emerging field.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), constructed by metal ions/clusters and organic linkers, featuring crystalline porous structures, have been intensively employed as templates/precursors for the synthesis of diverse porous materials including porous carbons, metal-based compounds (such as metal oxides/carbides/phosphides) and their composites. The large surface area, high porosity and excellent tailorability of MOFs can be well inherited to their derivatives, making MOF-derived porous materials very promising for catalytic applications. Herein, we systematically summarize the versatile synthetic strategies to fabricate MOF-derived porous materials and give an overview on their recent progress on organic heterogeneous catalysis, photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. Finally, the challenges and prospects related to MOF-derived porous materials for catalysis are also discussed. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
