Abstract:Today various nano-moieties including nanoparticles, nanocubes, nanosticks, nanoflowers and nanoprimes have been synthesised. It is an interesting challenge to build nanostructures using those nano-moieties as blocks owing to their distinct properties and numerous applications. Herein, we demonstrate a smart way, self-assembling, to arrange nanoparticles and nanocubes into a line, sphere, network, bowl-bottom etc. The obtained anisotropic nanostructures have been employed to enhance the sensor sensitivity and to identify the hot-spot position for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS).

Abstract:The development of science and technology of advanced materials using nanoscale units can be conducted by a novel concept involving combination of nanotechnology methodology with various research disciplines, especially supramolecular chemistry. The novel concept is called 'nanoarchitectonics' where self-assembly processes are crucial in many cases involving a wide range of component materials. This review of self-assembly processes re-examines recent progress in materials nanoarchitectonics. It is composed of three main sections: (1) the first short section describes typical examples of self-assembly research to outline the matters discussed in this review; (2) the second section summarizes self-assemblies at interfaces from general viewpoints; and (3) the final section is focused on self-assembly processes at interfaces. The examples presented demonstrate the strikingly wide range of possibilities and future potential of self-assembly processes and their important contribution to materials nanoarchitectonics. The research examples described in this review cover variously structured objects including molecular machines, molecular receptors, molecular pliers, molecular rotors, nanoparticles, nanosheets, nanotubes, nanowires, nanoflakes, nanocubes, nanodisks, nanoring, block copolymers, hyperbranched polymers, supramolecular polymers, supramolecular gels, liquid crystals, Langmuir monolayers, Langmuir-Blodgett films, self-assembled monolayers, thin films, layer-by-layer structures, breath figure motif structures, two-dimensional molecular patterns, fullerene crystals, metal-organic frameworks, coordination polymers, coordination capsules, porous carbon spheres, mesoporous materials, polynuclear catalysts, DNA origamis, transmembrane channels, peptide conjugates, and vesicles, as well as functional materials for sensing, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, photovoltaics, charge transport, excitation energy transfer, light-harvesting, photocatalysts, field effect transistors, logic gates, organic semiconductors, thin-film-based devices, drug delivery, cell culture, supramolecular differentiation, molecular recognition, molecular tuning, and hand-operating (hand-operated) nanotechnology.
A gluing construction for non-vacuum solutions of the Einstein constraint equations

Abstract:We extend the conformal gluing construction of Isenberg-Mazzeo-Pollack [18] by establishing an analogous gluing result for field theories obtained by minimally coupling Einstein's gravitational theory with matter fields. We treat classical fields such as perfect fluids and the Yang-Mills equations as well as the Einstein-Vlasov system, which is an important example coming from kinetic theory. In carrying out these extensions, we extend the conformal gluing technique to higher dimensions and codify it in such a way as to make more transparent where it can, and can not, be applied. In particular, we show exactly what criteria need to be met in order to apply the construction, in its present form, to any other non-vacuum field theory.

Abstract:Building structures with hierarchical order through the self-assembly of smaller blocks is not only a prerogative of nature, but also a strategy to design artificial materials with tailored functions. We explore in simulation the spontaneous assembly of colloidal particles into extended structures, using spheres and size-asymmetric dimers as solute particles, while treating the solvent implicitly. Besides rigid cores for all particles, we assume an effective short-range attraction between spheres and small monomers to promote, through elementary rules, dimer-mediated aggregation of spheres. Starting from a completely disordered configuration, we follow the evolution of the system at low temperature and density, as a function of the relative concentration of the two species. When spheres and large monomers are of same size, we observe the onset of elongated aggregates of spheres, either disconnected or cross-linked, and a crystalline bilayer. As spheres grow bigger, the self-assembling scenario changes, getting richer overall, with the addition of flexible membrane sheets with crystalline order and monolayer vesicles. With this wide assortment of structures, our model can serve as a viable template to achieve a better control of self-assembly in dilute suspensions of microsized particles.

Abstract:Self-assembly techniques are powerful and efficient methods for the synthesis of nanoscale materials. Using these techniques and their combination with other bottom-up fabrication processes, materials with hierarchical features can be produced with form and function in multiple length scales. We synthesize multifunctional nanoparticles through surfactant-assisted noncovalent interactions using nanoparticle building blocks. Self-assembly of these nano-building blocks results in functional materials that exhibit well-defined morphologies and hierarchical architectures for a wide range of applications. Hierarchically structured porphyrin nanocrystals can be synthesized through surfactant micelle-confined noncovalent interactions of photoactive porphyrins. We can amplify the intrinsic advantages of individual photoactive porphyrins by engineering them into well-defined active nanostructures. Through kinetic control, these nanocrystals exhibit precisely defined size, shape, and spatial arrangement of the individual porphyrins, which facilitates intermolecular mass and energy transfer. These self-assembly techniques provide remarkable flexibility to design morphologies and architectures that produce desirable properties for practical applications including photocatalysis, photodegradation, and phototherapy.

Abstract:Interfacial self‐assembly nanoarrays are fabricated by self‐assembly of building blocks at interfaces, based on intrinsic properties of the materials and diverse non‐covalent driving forces. These orderly organized nanostructures exhibit distinctive optical, electronic, and magnetic properties from both individual building blocks and collective behaviors, enabling their expanding applications across various fields. Interfacial self‐assembly nanoarrays refer to the spontaneously organized nanostructures at interfaces, relying on the intrinsic properties of involved materials, such as surface energy, molecular structure, and interactions. In recent years, the exponential growth of self‐assembly nanotechnology has substantially expanded the utility of nanomaterials. Particularly, non‐covalent interactions‐based interfacial self‐assembly represents a viable and promising approach for the synthesis of novel nanostructure. This review introduces the significance and current development status of interfacial self‐assembly technology, focusing on the driving mode, application, and prospects of interfacial self‐assembly nanoarrays over the past few years.

Abstract:Nanoparticle assembly is a complex and versatile method of generating new materials, capable of using thousands of different combinations of particle size, shape, composition, and ligand chemistry to generate a library of unique structures. Here, a history of particle self-assembly as a strategy for materials discovery is presented, focusing on key advances in both synthesis and measurement of emergent properties to describe the current state of the field. Several key challenges for further advancement of nanoparticle assembly are also outlined, establishing a roadmap of critical research areas to enable the next generation of nanoparticle-based materials synthesis.

Abstract:Nano-objects are generated through 3D confined supramolecular assembly, followed by a sequential disintegration by rupturing the hydrogen bonding. The shape of the nano-objects is tunable, ranging from nano-disc, nano-cup, to nano-toroid. The nano-objects are pHresponsive. As Z. Z. Yang, J. T. Zhu, and co-workers describe on page 4099, functional materials, for example inorganic nanoparticles, can be easily incorporated into the surface to extend both the composition and microstructure of the nano-objects, which is important in drug delivery, targeting, catalysis, and imaging.

Abstract:The properties and applications of metallic nanoparticles are inseparably connected not only to their detailed morphology and composition, but also to their structural configuration and mutual interactions. As a result, the assemblies often have superior properties as compared to individual nanoparticles. Although it has been reported that nanoparticles can form highly symmetric clusters, if the configuration can be predicted as a function of the synthesis parameters, more targeted and accurate synthesis will be possible. We present here a theoretical model that accurately predicts the structure and configuration of self-assembled gold nanoclusters. The validity of the model is verified using quantitative experimental data extracted from electron tomography 3D reconstructions of different assemblies. The present theoretical model is generic and can in principle be used for different types of nanoparticles, providing a very wide window of potential applications.

Abstract:In the first part, we will focus on the principles of self-assembled molecular network formation at the liquid-solid interface on surfaces such as graphite, MoS 2 , and graphene. Then we will discuss how lateral confinement, induced by covalent functionalization of graphite and graphene, affects self-assembly. Several strategies will be demonstrated to realize two-dimensional lateral confinement, all based on the covalent modification of the surface, making use of bottom-up approaches or a combination of bottom-up and top-down approaches. The impact of these various types of confinement on the formation of self-assembled molecular networks will be discussed, including aspects such as nucleation and growth, directional self-assembly, on-surface chirality, polymorphism, and reactivity. In a second part, we will focus on the formation of porous two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks at the liquid-solid interface, and reveal various interesting aspects at the molecular level such as nucleation and growth mechanisms, and the impact local electric fields may have on (de)polymerization processes. Abstract:The self-assembly of ultrathin nanocrystals (UTNCs) into well-organized multidimensional superstructures is one of the key topics in material chemistry and physics. Highly ordered nanocrystal assemblies also known as superstructures or synthetic structures have remained a focus for researchers over the past few years due to synergy in their properties as compared to their components. Here, we aim to present the recent progress being made in this field with highlights of our research group endeavors in the engineering of self-assembled complex multidimensional superstructures of various inorganic materials, including polyoxometalates. The driving forces for the assembly process and its kinetics along with the potential applications associated with these unique ordered and spatially complex superstructures are also discussed.
Approaches to self-assembly of colloidal monolayers: A guide for nanotechnologists

Abstract:Self-assembly of quasi-spherical colloidal particles in two-dimensional (2D) arrangements is essential for a wide range of applications from optoelectronics to surface engineering, from chemical and biological sensing to light harvesting and environmental remediation. Several self-assembly approaches have flourished throughout the years, with specific features in terms of complexity of the implementation, sensitivity to process parameters, characteristics of the final colloidal assembly. Selecting the proper method for a given application amidst the vast literature in this field can be a challenging task. In this review, we present an extensive classification and comparison of the different techniques adopted for 2D self-assembly in order to provide useful guidelines for scientists approaching this field. After an overview of the main applications of 2D colloidal assemblies, we describe the main mechanisms underlying their formation and introduce the mathematical tools commonly used to analyse their final morphology. Subsequently, we examine in detail each class of self-assembly techniques, with an explanation of the physical processes intervening in crystallization and a thorough investigation of the technical peculiarities of the different practical implementations. We point out the specific characteristics of the set-ups and apparatuses developed for self-assembly in terms of complexity, requirements, reproducibility, robustness, sensitivity to process parameters and morphology of the final colloidal pattern. Such an analysis will help the reader to individuate more easily the approach more suitable for a given application and will draw the attention towards the importance of the details of each implementation for the final results.
Heirarchical Self Assembly: Self Organized nano-structures in a nematically ordered matrix of self assembled polymeric chains

Abstract:We report many different nano-structures which are formed when model nano-particles of different sizes (diameter {\sigma} n ) are allowed to aggregate in a background matrix of semi-flexible self assembled polymeric worm like micellar chains. The different nano-structures are formed by the dynamical arrest of phase-separating mixtures of micellar monomers and nano-particles. The different mor- phologies obtained are the result of an interplay of the available free volume, the elastic energy of deformation of polymers, the density (chemical potential) of the nano-particles in the polymer ma- trix and, of course, the ratio of the size of self assembling nano-particles and self avoidance diameter of polymeric chains. We have used a hybrid semi-grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation scheme to obtain the (non-equilibrium) phase diagram of the self-assembled nano-structures. We observe rod-like structures of nano-particles which get self assembled in the gaps between the nematically ordered chains as well as percolating gel-like network of conjoined nanotubes. We also find a totally unexpected interlocked crystalline phase of nano-particles and monomers, in which each crytal plane of nanoparticles is separated by planes of perfectly organized polymer chains. We identified the con- dition which leads to such interlocked crystal structure. We suggest experimental possibilities of how the results presented in this paper could be used to obtain different nano-structures in the lab.

Abstract:Thanks to decades of tireless efforts, nanoparticle assemblies have reached an extremely high level of controllability, sophistication, and complexity, with new insights provided by integration with graph theory, cutting-edge characterization, and machine learning (ML)-based computation and modeling, as well as with ever-diversifying applications in energy, catalysis, biomedicine, optics, electronics, magnetics, organic biosynthesis, and quantum technology. Nanoparticle assemblies can be crystalline, known as superlattices or supracrystals. Their assembly entails a transition from disorder—dispersed nanoparticles—to order, which can be achieved through classical nucleation pathways or nonclassical pathways via prenucleation precursors or particle aggregation. The periodic lattices allow facile manipulations of electrons, phonons, photons, and even spins, leading to advanced device components and metamaterials. Meanwhile, aperiodic assemblies out of nanoparticles, such as gels, networks, and amorphous solids, also start to attract attention. Despite the loss of periodicity, symmetry-lowering or symmetry-breaking three-dimensional (3D) structures emerge with unique properties, such as chiroptical activity, topological mechanical strength, and quantum entanglement. Real-space imaging such as electron microscopy and x-ray-based tomography methods are utilized to characterize these complex structures, whereas mathematical tools such as graph theories are in need to describe such complex structures. This issue aims to provide a timely review of the efforts in this greatly broadened materials design space, including experiment, simulation, theory, and applications. Nine top experts (and their teams) from four countries deliver six articles summarizing fundamental mechanistic understandings of nanoparticle assemblies, highlighted with the developments of state-of-the-art in situ characterization tools and ML-assisted reverse engineering, and newly emergent applications of nanoarchitectures.

Abstract:Theoretical work related to the self-assembly of organic materials was dealt with, and the various mechanisms leading to self-assembly, such as transition metal mediated self-assembly, constraint induced self-assembly, covalent bond based self-assembly and van der Waals interaction driven self-assembly, etc., were discussed. The formation of ordered structures could be attributed to the competition between short range attractive forces and long-range repulsion, which was arising from dipole interaction or may result from a different mechanism based on a purely repulsive isotropic short-range pair potential with two characteristic length scales. Such mechanism could be exploited in the study of self-assembly process. First principles SAPT(DFT) interaction energy calculations, combined with the Williams-Stone-Misquitta method, offer the ability to improve the molecular dynamics (MD) accuracy which could in turn be used in the prediction of crystal structures and self-assembly tendency. The combination of experimental and theoretical studies could open new breakthroughs over the design, synthesis, and characterization of self-assembled materials.
