Abstract:Abstract. The temperature at the Antarctic Ice Sheet bed and the temperature gradient in subglacial rocks have been directly measured only a few times, although extensive thermodynamic modeling has been used to estimate the geothermal heat flux (GHF) under the ice sheet. During the last 5 decades, deep ice-core drilling projects at six sites – Byrd, WAIS Divide, Dome C, Kohnen, Dome F, and Vostok – have succeeded in reaching or nearly reaching the bed at inland locations in Antarctica. When temperature profiles in these boreholes and steady-state heat flow modeling are combined with estimates of vertical velocity, the heat flow at the ice-sheet base is translated to a geothermal heat flux of 57.9 ± 6.4 mW m−2 at Dome C, 78.9 ± 5.0 mW m−2 at Dome F, and 86.9 ± 16.6 mW m−2 at Kohnen, all higher than the predicted values at these sites. This warm base under the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) could be caused by radiogenic heat effects or hydrothermal circulation not accounted for by the models. The GHF at the base of the ice sheet at Vostok has a negative value of −3.6 ± 5.3 mW m−2, indicating that water from Lake Vostok is freezing onto the ice-sheet base. Correlation analyses between modeled and measured depth–age scales at the EAIS sites indicate that all of them can be adequately approximated by a steady-state model. Horizontal velocities and their variation over ice-age cycles are much greater for the West Antarctic Ice Sheet than for the interior EAIS sites; a steady-state model cannot precisely describe the temperature distribution here. Even if the correlation factors for the best fitting age–depth curve are only moderate for the West Antarctic sites, the GHF values estimated here of 88.4 ± 7.6 mW m−2 at Byrd and 113.3 ± 16.9 mW m−2 at WAIS Divide can be used as references before more precise estimates are made on the subject.

Abstract:Abstract. Geothermal heat flow (GHF) is the dominant factor affecting the basal thermal regime of ice sheet dynamics. But it is poorly defined for the Antarctic ice sheet. We compare the basal thermal state of the Totten Glacier catchment as simulated by eight different GHF datasets. We use a basal energy and water flow model coupled with a 3D full-Stokes ice dynamics model to estimate the basal temperature, basal friction heat and basal melting rate. In addition to the location of subglacial lakes, we use specularity content of the airborne radar returns as a two-sided constraint to discriminate between local wet or dry basal conditions and compare the returns with the basal state simulations with different GHFs. Two medium magnitude GHF distribution maps derived from seismic modelling rank well at simulating both cold- and warm-bed regions, the GHFs from Shen et al. (2020) and Shapiro and Ritzwoller (2004). The best-fit simulated result shows that most of the inland bed area is frozen. Only the central inland subglacial canyon, co-located with high specularity content, reaches the pressure melting point consistently in all the eight GHFs. Modelled basal melting rates in the slow-flowing region are generally 0–5 mm yr−1 but with local maxima of 10 mm yr−1 at the central inland subglacial canyon. The fast-flowing grounded glaciers close to the Totten ice shelf are lubricating their bases with meltwater at rates of 10–400 mm yr−1.

Abstract:Geothermal heat flow is a key parameter in governing ice dynamics, via its influence on basal melt and sliding, englacial rheology, and erosion. It is expected to exhibit significant lateral variability across Antarctica. Despite this, surface heat flow derived from Earth's interior remains one of the most poorly constrained parameters controlling ice sheet evolution. To obtain a continent‐wide map of Antarctic heat supply at regional‐scale resolution, we estimate upper mantle thermomechanical structure directly from VS. Until now, direct inferences of Antarctic heat supply have assumed constant crustal composition. Here, we explore a range of crustal conductivity and radiogenic heat production values by fitting thermodynamically self‐consistent geotherms to their seismically inferred counterparts. Independent estimates of crustal conductivity derived from VP are integrated to break an observed trade‐off between crustal parameters, allowing us to infer Antarctic geothermal heat flow and its associated uncertainty.

Abstract:Geothermal heat flow (GHF) is a key basal boundary condition for Antarctic ice‐sheet flow. Large‐scale variations are resolved by several recent models but knowledge of the smaller‐scale variations, crucial for ice sheet dynamics, is limited by unresolved variations in crustal radiogenic heat production. To define this at continent‐scale we use 3D gravity inversion constrained by seismic Moho estimates to identify variations in crustal composition and geometry beneath thick ice. Geochemically‐defined empirical relationships between density and heat production capture the global average trend and its variability, and allow to estimate from upper‐crust density spatial variations in radiogenic heat production. Significant variations are observed typically 1.2–1.6 μW/m3, and as high as 2 μW/m3 in West Antarctica. The contribution to GHF from these heat‐production variations is similarly variable, typically 16–24 mW/m2 and up to 60 mW/m2. The mapped variations are significant for correctly representing GHF in Antarctica.

Abstract:Abstract Meltwater forms at the base of the Antarctic Ice Sheet due to geothermal heat flux (GHF) and basal frictional dissipation. Despite the relatively small volume, this water has a profound effect on ice‐sheet dynamics. However, subglacial melting and hydrology in Antarctica remain highly uncertain, limiting our ability to assess their impact on ice‐sheet dynamics. Here we examine subglacial hydrology within the Amery Ice Shelf catchment, East Antarctica, using the subglacial hydrology model GlaDS. We calculate subglacial melt rates using a higher‐order ice‐flow model and two GHF estimates. We find a catchment‐wide melt rate of 7.03 Gt year −1 (standard deviation = 1.94 Gt year −1 ), which is ≥50% greater than previous estimates. The contribution from basal dissipation is approximately 40% of that from GHF. However, beneath fast‐flowing ice streams, basal dissipation is an order of magnitude larger than GHF, leading to a significant increase in channelized subglacial flux upstream of the grounding line. We validate GlaDS using high‐resolution interferometric‐swath radar altimetry, with which we detect active subglacial lakes and fine‐scale ice‐shelf basal melting. We find a network of subglacial channels that connects areas of deep subglacial water coincident with active subglacial lakes, and channelized discharge at the grounding line coinciding with enhanced ice‐shelf basal melting. The concentrated discharge of meltwater provides 36% of the freshwater released into the ice‐shelf cavity, in addition to ice‐shelf basal melting. This suggests that ice‐shelf basal melting is strongly influenced by subglacial hydrology and could be affected by future changes in subglacial discharge, such as lake drainage or channel rerouting.

Abstract:Glaciological and oceanographic observations coupled with numerical models show that warm Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) incursions onto the West Antarctic continental shelf cause melting of the undersides of floating ice shelves. Because these ice shelves buttress glaciers feeding into them, their ocean-induced thinning is driving Antarctic ice-sheet retreat today. Here we present a multi-proxy data based reconstruction of variability in CDW inflow to the Amundsen Sea sector, the most vulnerable part of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, during the Holocene epoch (from 11.7 thousand years ago to the present). The chemical compositions of foraminifer shells and benthic foraminifer assemblages in marine sediments indicate that enhanced CDW upwelling, controlled by the latitudinal position of the Southern Hemisphere westerly winds, forced deglaciation of this sector from at least 10,400 years ago until 7,500 years ago—when an ice-shelf collapse may have caused rapid ice-sheet thinning further upstream—and since the 1940s. These results increase confidence in the predictive capability of current ice-sheet models.

Abstract:The Antarctic Slope Front and the associated Antarctic Slope Current dynamically regulate the exchanges of heat across the continental shelf break around Antarctica. Where the front is weak, relatively warm deep waters reach the ice shelf cavities, contributing to basal melting and ultimately affecting sea level rise. Here, we present new 2017–2021 records from two moorings deployed on the upper continental slope (530 and 738 m depth) just upstream of the Filchner Trough in the southeastern Weddell Sea. The structure and seasonal variability of the frontal system in this region, central to the inflow of warm water toward the large Filchner‐Ronne Ice Shelf, is previously undescribed. We use the records to describe the mean state and the seasonal variability of the regional hydrography and the southern part of the Antarctic Slope Current. We find that (a) the current is, contrary to previous assumptions, bottom‐enhanced, (b) the isotherms slope upwards toward the shelf break, and more so for warmer isotherms, and (c) the monthly mean thermocline depth is shallowest in February‐March and deepest in May‐June while (d) the current is strongest in April‐June. On monthly timescales, we show that (e) positive temperature anomalies of the de‐seasoned records are associated with weaker‐than‐average currents. We propose that the upward‐sloping isotherms are linked to the local topography and conservation of potential vorticity. Our results contribute to the understanding of how warm ocean waters propagate southward and potentially affect basal melt rates at the Filchner‐Ronne Ice Shelf.

Abstract:Between 1992 and 2017, the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) lost ice equivalent to 7.6 ±3.9 mm of sea level rise. AIS mass loss is mitigated by ice shelves that provide a buttress by regulating ice flow from tributary glaciers. However, ice‐shelf stability is threatened by meltwater ponding which may initiate, or reactivate pre‐existing, fractures; currently poorly understood processes. Here, through ground penetrating radar (GPR) analysis over a buried lake in the grounding zone of an East Antarctic ice shelf, we present the first field observations of a lake drainage event in Antarctica via vertical fractures. Concurrent with the lake drainage event, we observe a decrease in surface elevation and an increase in Sentinel‐1 backscatter. Finally, we suggest that fractures that are initiated or re‐activated by lake drainage events in a grounding zone will propagate with ice flow onto the ice shelf itself, where they may have implications for its stability.

Abstract:Abstract We investigate velocity changes occurring along Whillans Ice Stream (WIS) by comparing velocities derived from repeat aerial photographs acquired in 1985-89 (average date of 1987) to interferometric satellite radar (InSAR) velocities collected in 1997. Three different analysis methods are applied to the velocity data. First, temporal and spatial changes in velocities are correlated to identifiable features (flowlines, shear margins, bed features) visible on the 1997 RADARSAT Antarctic Mapping Project mosaic. Second, we relate velocity gradients to stresses via the flow law and, along with surface topography and ice-thickness data, apply the force-budget technique to determine the relative importance of driving stress, side drag and basal drag over time. Finally, the mass balance of the main part of WIS is determined for 1987 and 1997. Our results are consistent with previous studies that show an overall deceleration resulting in downstream thickening of the ice stream (Whillans and others, 2001; Joughin and others, 2002).

Abstract:Tyler Pelle from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and colleagues from the USA, Canada and the UK used plume and ice-sheet models to assess the sensitivity of the Denman and Scott glaciers in East Antarctica to different drivers. They find that while the glaciers' melt is dominated by ocean water, it is accelerated by subglacial discharge, which explains part of the recently observed high basal melting rates in the region. Under high emissions, Denman Glacier retreats beyond the stabilizing topographical features and undergoes an accelerated melt, leading to a contribution of up to 0.33 mm per year to sea-level rise. This work indicates that understanding subglacial processes is essential to constrain the contribution from glaciers to sea-level rise, including those in East Antarctica.

Abstract:Future mass loss from the East Antarctic Ice Sheet represents a major uncertainty in projections of future sea level rise. Recent studies have highlighted the potential vulnerability of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet to atmospheric and oceanic changes, but long-term observations inside the ice shelf cavities are rare. Here, we present new insights from observations from three oceanic moorings below Fimbulisen Ice Shelf from 2009 to 2023. We examine the characteristics of intrusions of modified Warm Deep Water (mWDW) across a sill connecting the cavity to the open ocean and investigate seasonal variability of the circulation and water masses inside the cavity using an optimum multiparameter analysis. In autumn, the water below the 345 m deep central part of the ice shelf is composed of up to 30 % solar-heated, buoyant Antarctic Surface Water (ASW), separating colder Ice Shelf Water from the ice base and affecting the cavity circulation on seasonal timescales. At depth, the occurrence of mWDW is associated with the advection of cyclonic eddies across the sill into the cavity. These eddies reach up to the ice base. The warm intrusions are observed most often from January to March and from September to November, and traces of mWDW-derived meltwater close to the ice base imply an overturning of these warm intrusions inside the cavity. We suggest that this timing is set by both the offshore thermocline depth and the interactions of the Antarctic Slope Current with the ice shelf topography over the continental slope. Our findings provide a better understanding of the interplay between shallow inflows of ASW contributions and deep inflows of mWDW for basal melting at Fimbulisen Ice Shelf, with implications for the potential vulnerability of the ice shelf to climate change.

Abstract:Warm water from the Southern Ocean has a dominant impact on the evolution of Antarctic glaciers and in turn on their contribution to sea level rise. Using a continuous time series of daily-repeat satellite synthetic-aperture radar interferometry data from the ICEYE constellation collected in March-June 2023, we document an ice grounding zone, or region of tidally controlled migration of the transition boundary between grounded ice and ice afloat in the ocean, at the main trunk of Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica, a strong contributor to sea level rise with an ice volume equivalent to a 0.6-m global sea level rise. The ice grounding zone is 6 km wide in the central part of Thwaites with shallow bed slopes, and 2 km wide along its flanks with steep basal slopes. We additionally detect irregular seawater intrusions, 5 to 10 cm in thickness, extending another 6 km upstream, at high tide, in a bed depression located beyond a bedrock ridge that impedes the glacier retreat. Seawater intrusions align well with regions predicted by the GlaDS subglacial water model to host a high-pressure distributed subglacial hydrology system in between lower-pressure subglacial channels. Pressurized seawater intrusions will induce vigorous melt of grounded ice over kilometers, making the glacier more vulnerable to ocean warming, and increasing the projections of ice mass loss. Kilometer-wide, widespread seawater intrusion beneath grounded ice may be the missing link between the rapid, past, and present changes in ice sheet mass and the slower changes replicated by ice sheet models.
The optical and biological properties of glacial meltwater in an Antarctic fjord

Abstract:As the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) region responds to a warmer climate, the impacts of glacial meltwater on the Southern Ocean are expected to intensify. The Antarctic Peninsula fjord system offers an ideal system to understand meltwater's properties, providing an extreme in the meltwater's spatial gradient from the glacio-marine boundary to the WAP continental shelf. Glacial meltwater discharge in Arctic and Greenland fjords is typically characterized as relatively lower temperature, fresh and with high turbidity. During two cruises conducted in December 2015 and April 2016 in Andvord Bay, we found a water lens of low salinity and low temperature along the glacio-marine interface. Oxygen isotope ratios identified this water lens as a mixture of glacial ice and deep water in Gerlache Strait suggesting this is glacial meltwater. Conventional hydrographic measurements were combined with optical properties to effectively quantify its spatial extent. Fine suspended sediments associated with meltwater (nanoparticles of ~ 5nm) had a significant impact on the underwater light field and enabled the detection of meltwater characteristics and spatial distribution. In this study, we illustrate that glacial meltwater in Andvord Bay alters the inherent and apparent optical properties of the water column, and develop statistical models to predict the meltwater content from hydrographic and optical measurements. The predicted meltwater fraction is in good agreement with in-situ values. These models offer a potential for remote sensing and high-resolution detection of glacial meltwater in Antarctic waters. Furthermore, the possible influence of meltwater on phytoplankton abundance in the surface is highlighted; a significant correlation is found between meltwater fraction and chlorophyll concentration.
Heterogeneous Basal Thermal Conditions Underpinning the Adélie‐George V Coast, East Antarctica

Abstract:Adélie‐George V Land in East Antarctica, encompassing the vast Wilkes Subglacial Basin, has a configuration that could be prone to ice sheet instability: the basin's retrograde bed slope could make its marine terminating glaciers vulnerable to warm seawater intrusion and irreversible retreat under predicted climate forcing. However, future projections are uncertain, due in part to limited subglacial observations near the grounding zone. Here, we develop a novel statistical approach to characterize subglacial conditions from radar sounding observations. Our method reveals intermixed frozen and thawed bed within 100 km of the grounding‐zone near the Wilkes Subglacial Basin outflow, and enables comparisons to ice sheet model‐inferred thermal states. The signs of intermixed or near thawed conditions raises the possibility that changes in basal thermal state could impact the stability of Adélie‐George V Land, adding to the region's potentially vulnerable topographic configuration and sensitivity to ocean forcing driven grounding line retreat.

Abstract:The properties and behavior of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet through time are key to understanding climate and sea level change in the near future. We analyze different types of seismic waves from an active-source acquisition deployed on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and uncover the internal structures of the ice sheet using seismic imaging methods. Surface waves including leaky and normal modes are separated from englacial and bed reflections using a cross-component matched filter method. Leaky modes are uniquely strong in the data possibly due to the firn layer and ice compaction. We use a joint inversion of leaky and normal surface waves for P- and S-wave velocity estimation in the near-surface and attribute the ultra-low Vp and Vs ratios to the pore closure. We observe englacial reflections down to 50 Hz and bed reflections with multiple branches. Such reflection waves are further used to calculate the seismic images of discontinuities in the ice sheet and the bedrock, revealing multiple layers within the ice near the bed and a heterogeneous bedrock with a rugged surface and possibly existing faults. The fine structure of the ice sheet revealed by seismic data helps with searching for possible drain points and evaluating the instability of the ice sheet. Our data analysis shown in the study is also applicable to typical data sets collected for critical zone exploration.

Abstract:Abstract West Antarctic Ice Sheet mass loss is a major source of uncertainty in sea level projections. The primary driver of this melting is oceanic heat from Circumpolar Deep Water originating offshore in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Yet, in assessing melt variability, open ocean processes have received considerably less attention than those governing cross-shelf exchange. Here, we use Lagrangian particle release experiments in an ocean model to investigate the pathways by which Circumpolar Deep Water moves toward the continental shelf across the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean. We show that Ross Gyre expansion, linked to wind and sea ice variability, increases poleward heat transport along the gyre’s eastern limb and the relative fraction of transport toward the Amundsen Sea. Ross Gyre variability, therefore, influences oceanic heat supply toward the West Antarctic continental slope. Understanding remote controls on basal melt is necessary to predict the ice sheet response to anthropogenic forcing.

Abstract:Abstract Continental‐scale mosaics of satellite‐based surface brightness temperature from thermal infrared band measurements and derived near‐surface air temperatures from geostatistical modeling provide new opportunities for understanding wintertime Foehn wind warming and its potential impacts on the valley floor warming. We have detected and assessed Foehn signatures using a combined data analysis approach from previously developed and validated Antarctic‐wide near‐surface Air temperature data set (AntAir), automatic weather stations from the McMurdo Dry Valleys, and regional climate model simulations at 10 km spatial grid resolution. Self‐organizing maps and data compositing methods on regional climate model outputs provided meteorological context for the AntAir‐derived surface climate information. We conclude that AntAir is suitable for surface climatological analyses and improvements are underway to enhance the spatial resolution to sub‐kilometer grid scales. Finally, by applying a Foehn detection algorithm over 13 years, we present the spatial climatological footprints of Foehn‐induced warming across the Dry Valleys of Antarctica for the first time over the austral winters.

Abstract:Trapped beneath the Antarctic ice sheet lie over 400 subglacial lakes, which are considered to be extreme, isolated, yet viable habitats for microbial life. The physical conditions within subglacial lakes are critical to evaluating how and where life may best exist. Here, we propose that Earth's geothermal flux provides efficient stirring of Antarctic subglacial lake water. We demonstrate that most lakes are in a regime of vigorous turbulent vertical convection, enabling suspension of spherical particulates with diameters up to 36 micrometers. Thus, dynamic conditions support efficient mixing of nutrient- and oxygen-enriched meltwater derived from the overlying ice, which is essential for biome support within the water column. We caution that accreted ice analysis cannot always be used as a proxy for water sampling of lakes beneath a thin (<3.166 kilometers) ice cover, because a stable layer isolates the well-mixed bulk water from the ice-water interface where freezing may occur.

Abstract:Solar-warmed surface waters subduct beneath Antarctica's ice shelves as a result of wind forcing, but this process is poorly observed and its interannual variability is yet to be assessed. We observe a 50-meter-thick intrusion of warm surface water immediately beneath the Ross Ice Shelf. Temperature in the uppermost 5 meters decreases toward the ice base in near-perfect agreement with an exponential fit, consistent with the loss of heat to the overlying ice. Ekman forcing drives a heat transport into the cavity sufficient to contribute considerably to near-front melting; this transport has increased over the past four decades, driven by the increasing heat content of the ice-front polynya. Interannual variability of the heat transport is driven by zonal wind stress. These results provide a benchmark against which model performance may be assessed as we seek to reduce uncertainty around the contribution of basal melting to sea level rise.
