Abstract:The measurement by satellite sensors of the light field backscattered from the atmosphere– ocean system is a powerful tool to monitor marine ecosystems, carbon cycle, or water quality on the global scale. Indeed, the color of the ocean, defined by the spectral behavior of the radiance exiting through the sea surface, is a good indicator of the phytoplankton pigments (e.g., chlorophyll a) and particulate content (e.g., particulate organic carbon) of the surface layer of the ocean.
