Abstract:Ammonium sulfate (AS) and ammonium nitrate (AN) are key components of urban fine particles. Both field and model studies showed that heterogeneous reactions of SO2, NO2, and NH3 on wet aerosols accelerated the haze formation in northern China. However, little is known on phase transitions of AS-AN containing haze particles. Here hygroscopic properties of laboratory-generated AS-AN particles and individual particles collected during haze events in an urban site were investigated using an individual particle hygroscopicity system. AS-AN particles showed a two-stage deliquescence at mutual deliquescence relative humidity (MDRH) and full deliquescence relative humidity (DRH) and three physical states: solid before MDRH, solid-aqueous between MDRH and DRH, and aqueous after DRH. During hydration, urban haze particles displayed a solid core and aqueous shell at RH=60-80% and aqueous phase at RH>80%. Most particles were in aqueous phase at RH>50% during dehydration. Our results show that AS content in individual particles determines their DRH and AN content determines their MDRH. AN content increase can reduce MDRH, which indicates occurrence of aqueous shell at lower RH. The humidity-dependent phase transitions of nitrate-abundant urban particles are important to provide reactive surfaces of secondary aerosol formation in the polluted air. Plain Language Summary Recently, aerosol water has received more attention because heterogeneous reactions of SO2, NO2, and NH3 on wet particles accelerate the severe haze formation in north China. Ammonium sulfate and ammonium nitrate (AS-AN) are key components of fine urban particles. Especially, nitrate concentration keeps increasing in polluted air in China. Our study indicates that the increase of AN content promotes the occurrence of aqueous shell at lower RH. Here we find that most of urban particles generally keep solid core and aqueous shell at RH=60-80% and aqueous phase at RH>80%. These findings can clearly explain the role of nitrate in phase transitions and make up the discussion about heterogeneous reactions on particle surfaces during the severe hazes in north China. Humidity-dependent phase states of particles are useful for interpreting the secondary aerosols' formation in severe hazes as well as in modeling studies.

Abstract:Nitrate is formed through the chemical production of gas-phase nitric acid and subsequent partitioning to the aerosol phase during the daytime. Many studies in the past separated these two aspects, even though they occur simultaneously in the atmosphere. To better understand the nitrate formation mechanism and effectively mitigate its production, it is necessary to consider the synergy between these two mechanisms. For this, we analyze hourly-speciated ambient observations data, with EK&TMA (Empirical Kinetic & Thermodynamic Modeling Approach) map to comprehensively explore the factors controlling nitrate production. Results show that precursor NO 2 concentration and aerosol pH, which are related to anthropogenic activities, are the two major factors for chemical kinetics production and gas/particle thermodynamic partitioning processes respectively. Abundant NO 2 and weakly acidic environments are favorable conditions for daytime particulate nitrate pollution, thus collaborative control of coal source, vehicle source, and dust source is needed to alleviate nitrate pollution.

Abstract:Nitro-phenolic compounds (NPs) have attracted increasing attention because of their health risks and impacts on visibility, climate, and atmospheric chemistry. Despite many measurements of particulate NPs, the knowledge of their gaseous abundances, sources, atmospheric fates, and impacts remains incomplete. Here, 18 gaseous NPs were continuously measured with a time-of-flight chemical ionization mass spectrometer at a background site in South China in autumn and winter. Abundant NPs were observed in the continental outflows from East Asia, with a total concentration up to 122.1 pptv. Secondary formation from the transported aromatics dominated the observed NPs, with mono-NPs exhibiting photochemical daytime peaks and nighttime enrichments of di-NPs and Cl-substituted NPs. The budget analysis indicates that besides the •OH oxidation of aromatics, the NO3• oxidation also contributed significantly to the daytime mono-NPs, while the further oxidation of mono-NPs by NO3• dominated the nocturnal formation of di-NPs. Photolysis was the main daytime sink of NPs and produced substantial HONO, which would influence atmospheric oxidation capacity in downwind and background regions. This study provides quantitative insights on the formation and impacts of gaseous NPs in the continental outflow and highlights the role of NO3• chemistry in the secondary nitro-aromatics production that may facilitate regional pollution.

Abstract:Nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) are important light absorption contributors to atmospheric brown carbon; however, their formation pathways and the key influential factors in polluted urban atmospheres are largely unknown. Herein, we present the molecular characterization of atmospheric particulate NACs in urban Shanghai by applying ultra‐high‐performance liquid chromatography coupled to Orbitrap mass spectrometry, and investigated their seasonal and diel variations and formation pathways. The total number and abundance of NACs increased significantly during air pollution episodes, and these NACs exhibited the greatest relative abundance among CHON compounds. The 12 quantified NACs exhibited higher levels in winter (52.3 ± 29.1 ng m−3) than summer (7.83 ± 3.30 ng m−3), largely owing to air masses mostly passing through northern heating regions. Among NACs, 4‐nitrophenol and 4‐nitrocatechol were the most abundant species. Most of NACs were enhanced via photooxidation during the day in summer, while the day‐night variations in winter were not as obvious. Further analysis of atmospheric formation relevance suggested that nitrophenol and its methylated derivatives were mainly formed through gas‐phase photochemical reactions, whereas aqueous‐phase oxidation processing could be an important pathway to form methyl‐nitrocatechols. Formation of NACs was relatively sensitive to NO2 under low‐NOx conditions, and became independent of NO2 under high‐NOx conditions. A larger fraction of NO2 was transformed into NACs than into inorganic nitrate products when nitrate was less abundant, implying that NACs would play more important roles in aerosol properties with the decline in nitrate concentrations.

Abstract:Enhanced photolysis of particulate nitrate (pNO3) to form photolabile species, such as gas-phase nitrous acid (HONO), has been proposed as a potential mechanism to recycle nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the remote boundary layer ("renoxification"). This article presents a series of laboratory experiments aimed at investigating the parameters that control the photolysis of pNO3 and the efficiency of HONO production. Filters on which artificial or ambient particles had been sampled were exposed to the light of a solar simulator, and the formation of HONO was monitored under controlled laboratory conditions. The results indicate that the photolysis of pNO3 is enhanced, compared to the photolysis of gas-phase HNO3, at low pNO3 levels, with the enhancement factor reducing at higher pNO3 levels. The presence of cations (Na+) and halides (Cl-) and photosensitive organic compounds (imidazole) also enhance pNO3 photolysis, but other organic compounds such as oxalate and succinic acid have the opposite effect. The precise role of humidity in pNO3 photolysis remains unclear. While the efficiency of photolysis is enhanced in deliquescent particles compared to dry particles, some of the experimental results suggest that this may not be the case for supersaturated particles. These experiments suggest that both the composition and the humidity of particles control the enhancement of particulate nitrate photolysis, potentially explaining the variability in results among previous laboratory and field studies. HONO observations in the remote marine boundary layer can be explained by a simple box-model that includes the photolysis of pNO3, in line with the results presented here, although more experimental work is needed in order to derive a comprehensive parametrization of this process.

Abstract:Oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) by the nitrate radical (NO3) represents one of the important interactions between anthropogenic emissions related to combustion and natural emissions from the biosphere. This interaction has been recognized for more than 3 decades, during which time a large body of research has emerged from laboratory, field, and modeling studies. NO3-BVOC reactions influence air quality, climate and visibility through regional and global budgets for reactive nitrogen (particularly organic nitrates), ozone, and organic aerosol. Despite its long history of research and the significance of this topic in atmospheric chemistry, a number of important uncertainties remain. These include an incomplete understanding of the rates, mechanisms, and organic aerosol yields for NO3-BVOC reactions, lack of constraints on the role of heterogeneous oxidative processes associated with the NO3 radical, the difficulty of characterizing the spatial distributions of BVOC and NO3 within the poorly mixed nocturnal atmosphere, and the challenge of constructing appropriate boundary layer schemes and non-photochemical mechanisms for use in state-of-the-art chemical transport and chemistry-climate models. This review is the result of a workshop of the same title held at the Georgia Institute of Technology in June 2015. The first half of the review summarizes the current literature on NO3-BVOC chemistry, with a particular focus on recent advances in instrumentation and models, and in organic nitrate and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation chemistry. Building on this current understanding, the second half of the review outlines impacts of NO3-BVOC chemistry on air quality and climate, and suggests critical research needs to better constrain this interaction to improve the predictive capabilities of atmospheric models.

Abstract:Tropospheric ozone is an air pollutant and a greenhouse gas whose anthropogenic production is limited principally by the supply of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from combustion. Tropospheric ozone in the northern hemisphere has been rising despite the flattening of NOx emissions in recent decades. Here we propose that this sustained increase could result from the photolysis of nitrate particles (pNO3−) to regenerate NOx. Including pNO3− photolysis in the GEOS‐Chem atmospheric chemistry model improves the consistency with ozone observations. Our simulations show that pNO3− concentrations have increased since the 1960s because of rising ammonia and falling SO2 emissions, augmenting the increase in ozone in the northern extratropics by about 50% to better match the observed ozone trend. pNO3− will likely continue to increase through 2050, which would drive a continued increase in ozone even as NOx emissions decrease. More work is needed to better understand the mechanism and rates of pNO3− photolysis.

Abstract:We use the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQv5.4) model to examine the potential impact of particulate nitrate (pN O3− ) photolysis on air quality over the Northern Hemisphere. We estimate the photolysis frequency of pN O3− by scaling the photolysis frequency of nitric acid (HNO 3 ) with an enhancement factor that varies between 10 and 100 depending on pN O3− and sea-salt aerosol concentrations and then perform CMAQ simulations without and with pN O3− photolysis to quantify the range of impacts on tropospheric composition. The photolysis of pN O3− produces gaseous nitrous acid (HONO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) over seawater thereby increasing atmospheric HONO and NO 2 mixing ratios. HONO subsequently undergoes photolysis, producing hydroxyl radicals (OH). The increase in NO 2 and OH alters atmospheric chemistry and enhances the atmospheric ozone (O 3 ) mixing ratio over seawater, which is subsequently transported to downwind continental regions. Seasonal mean model O 3 vertical column densities without pN O3− photolysis are lower than the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) retrievals, while the column densities with the pN O3− photolysis agree better with the OMI retrievals of tropospheric O 3 burden. We compare model O 3 mixing ratios with available surface observed data from the U.S., Japan, the Tropospheric Ozone Assessment Report – Phase II, and OpenAQ; and find that the model without pN O3− photolysis underestimates the observed data in winter and spring seasons and the model with pN O3− photolysis improves the comparison in both seasons, largely rectifying the pronounced underestimation in spring. Compared to measurements from the western U.S., model O 3 mixing ratios with pN O3− photolysis agree better with observed data in all months due to the persistent underestimation of O 3 without pN O3− photolysis. Compared to the ozonesonde measurements, model O 3 mixing ratios with pN O3− photolysis also agree better with observed data than the model O 3 without pN O3− photolysis.

Abstract:Nitrated phenols (NPs) are important atmospheric pollutants that affect air quality, radiation, and health. The recent development of the time-of-flight chemical ionization mass spectrometer (ToF-CIMS) allows quantitative online measurements of NPs for a better understanding of their sources and environmental impacts. Herein, we deployed nitrate ions as reagent ions in the ToF-CIMS and quantified six classes of gaseous NPs in Beijing. The concentrations of NPs are in the range of 1 to 520 ng m-3. Nitrophenol (NPh) has the greatest mean concentration. Dinitrophenol (DNP) shows the greatest haze-to-clean concentration ratio, which may be associated with aqueous production. The high concentrations and distinct diurnal profiles of NPs indicate a strong secondary formation to overweigh losses, driven by high emissions of precursors, strong oxidative capacity, and high NOx levels. The budget analysis on the basis of our measurements and box-model calculations suggest a minor role of the photolysis of NPs (<1 ppb h-1) in producing OH radicals. NPs therefore cannot explain the underestimated OH production in urban environments. Discrepancies between these results and the laboratory measurements of the NP photolysis rates indicate the need for further studies aimed at understanding the production and losses of NPs in polluted urban environments.

Abstract:Dark aqueous-phase reactions involving the nitrosation and nitration of aromatic organic compounds play a significant role in the production of light-absorbing organic carbon in the atmosphere. This process constitutes a crucial aspect of tropospheric chemistry and has attracted growing research interest, particularly in understanding the mechanisms governing nighttime reactions between phenols and nitrogen oxides. In this study, we present new findings concerning the rapid dark reactions between phenols containing electron-donating groups and inorganic nitrite in acidic aqueous solutions with pH levels <3.5. This reaction generates a substantial amount of nitroso- and nitro-substituted phenolic compounds, known for their light-absorbing properties and toxicity. In experiments utilizing various substituted phenols, we demonstrate that their reaction rates with nitrite depend on the electron cloud density of the benzene ring, indicative of an electrophilic substitution reaction mechanism. Control experiments and theoretical calculations indicate that the nitrosonium ion (NO+) is the reactive nitrogen species responsible for undergoing electrophilic reactions with phenolate anions, leading to the formation of nitroso-substituted phenolic compounds. These compounds then undergo partial oxidation to form nitro-substituted phenols through reactions with nitrous acid (HONO) or other oxidants like oxygen. Our findings unveil a novel mechanism for swift atmospheric nitrosation and nitration reactions that occur within acidic cloud droplets or aerosol water, providing valuable insights into the rapid nocturnal formation of nitrogen-containing organic compounds with significant implications for climate dynamics and human health.

Abstract:Free radicals and nitrogen-containing species produced by nitrate photolysis can affect various atmospheric chemical processes, and thereby the photochemical behavior of atmospheric nitrate aerosols has been attracting much attention. However, the photolysis mechanism of NH4NO3 and its products under different atmospheric conditions remain unclear. In this study, the effects of relative humidity (RH), pH, NH3, ultraviolet (UV) light intensity and halogen ions (Cl−, Br− and I−) on the photolysis of particulate NH4NO3 have been investigated through a flow tube reactor. The results show that RH can significantly enhance the production of gaseous NO2 from the photolysis of NH4NO3 when RH is higher than its deliquescence RH, but almost no NO2 is generated under dry conditions. Under high RH and UV light, the main product of NH4NO3 photolysis is NO2, rather than NO and HONO, and another main species HNO3 which mainly comes from the hydrolysis of product NO2 in the gas path was detected. Almost no NO2 and HNO3 are produced under high RH without UV light or low RH with UV light, showing the combined effect of high RH and UV irradiation on the photolysis of NH4NO3. In addition, under high RH, the lower the pH and the stronger the light intensity, the higher the NO2 production. Furthermore, surprising yields of NO and HONO are detected in the presence of halogen ions, especially in the presence of I−, indicating the important role of halogen ion in the nitrate photolysis. These results provide new insights into the photolysis of atmospheric nitrate aerosols, and may contribute to elucidating the formation and migration of atmospheric nitrate aerosols and the potential mechanisms of the occurrence and evolution of atmospheric pollution and ozone pollution.

Abstract:Nitrophenols present on the surface of particulates are ubiquitous in the atmosphere. However, its atmospheric photochemical transformation pathway remains unknown, for which the crucial effect of visible light is largely overlooked, resulting in an incomplete understanding of the effects of nitrophenols in the atmospheric environment. This study delves into the photolysis mechanism of 4-nitrophenol (4NP), one of the most abundant atmospheric nitrophenol compounds, on the surface of photoactive particulates under visible light irradiation. Unexpectedly, the nonradical species (singlet oxygen, 1O2) was identified as a dominant factor in driving the visible photolysis of 4NP. The pathways of HONO and p-benzoquinone (C6H4O2) generation were clarified by acquiring direct evidence of C-N and O-H bond breakage in the nitro (-NO2) and hydroxyl (-OH) groups of 4NP. The further decomposition of HONO results in the generation of NO and hydroxyl radicals, which could directly contribute to atmospheric oxidizing capacity and complicate the PM2.5 composition. Significantly, the behavior of 1O2-induced visible photolysis of 4NP was universal on the surface of common particulates in the atmosphere, such as A1 dust and Fe2O3. This work advances the understanding of the photochemical transformation mechanism of particulate-phase atmospheric nitrophenols, which is indispensable in elucidating the role of nitrophenols in atmospheric chemistry.

Characterization of Nighttime Formation of Particulate Organic Nitrates Based on High-Resolution Aerosol Mass Spectrometry in an Urban Atmosphere in China

Abstract:Organic nitrates are important atmospheric species that significantly affect the cycling of NOx and ozone production. However, characterization of particulate organic nitrates and their sources in polluted atmosphere is a big challenge and has not been comprehensively studied in Asia. In this study, an aerodyne high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS) was deployed at an urban site in China from 2015 to 2016 to characterize particulate organic nitrates in total nitrates with a high time resolution. Based on the cross-validation of two different data processing methods, organic nitrates were effectively quantified to contribute a notable fraction of organic aerosol (OA), namely 9 %–21 % in spring, 11 %–25 % in summer, and 9 %–20 % in autumn, while contributing a very small fraction in winter. The good correlation between organic nitrates and fresh secondary organic aerosol (SOA) at night, as well as the diurnal trend of size distribution of organic nitrates, indicated a key role of nighttime local secondary formation of organic nitrates. Furthermore, theoretical calculations of nighttime SOA production of NO3 reactions with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) measured during the spring campaign were performed, resulting in three biogenic VOCs (α-pinene, limonene, and camphene) and one anthropogenic VOC (styrene) identified as the possible key VOC precursors to particulate organic nitrates. The comparison with similar studies in the literature implied that nighttime particulate organic nitrate formation is highly relevant to NOx levels. This study proposes that unlike the documented cases in the United States and Europe, modeling nighttime particulate organic nitrate formation in China should incorporate not only biogenic VOCs but also anthropogenic VOCs for urban air pollution, which needs the support of relevant smog chamber studies in the future.

Abstract:Nitrate and sulfate are two key components of airborne particulate matter (PM). While multiple formation mechanisms have been proposed for sulfate, current air quality models commonly underestimate its concentrations and mass fractions during northern China winter haze events. On the other hand, current models usually overestimate the mass fractions of nitrate. Very recently, laboratory studies have proposed that nitrous acid (N(III)) produced by particulate nitrate photolysis can oxidize sulfur dioxide to produce sulfate. Here, for the first time, we parametrize this heterogeneous mechanism into a state-of-the-art Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model and quantify its contributions to sulfate formation. We find that the significance of this mechanism mainly depends on the enhancement effects (by 1-3 orders of magnitude as suggested by the available experimental studies) of the nitrate photolysis rate constant (J(NO3)(-)) in aerosol liquid water compared to that in the gas phase. Comparisons between model simulations and in situ observations in Beijing suggest that this pathway can explain from about 15% (assuming an enhancement factor (EF) of 10) to 65% (assuming EF = 100) of the model-observation gaps in sulfate concentrations during winter haze. Our study strongly calls for future research on reducing the uncertainty in EF.

Abstract:Chlorine atoms (Cl) are highly reactive and can strongly influence the abundances of climate and air quality-relevant trace gases. Despite extensive research on molecular chlorine (Cl 2 ), a Cl precursor, in the polar atmosphere, its sources in other regions are still poorly understood. Here we report the daytime Cl 2 concentrations of up to 1 ppbv observed in a coastal area of Hong Kong, revealing a large daytime source of Cl 2 (2.7 pptv s −1 at noon). Field and laboratory experiments indicate that photodissociation of particulate nitrate by sunlight under acidic conditions (pH < 3.0) can activate chloride and account for the observed daytime Cl 2 production. The high Cl 2 concentrations significantly increased atmospheric oxidation. Given the ubiquitous existence of chloride, nitrate, and acidic aerosols, we propose that nitrate photolysis is a significant daytime chlorine source globally. This so far unaccounted for source of chlorine can have substantial impacts on atmospheric chemistry.

Abstract:Free radicals and nitrogen-containing species produced by nitrate photolysis can affect various atmospheric chemical processes, and thereby the photochemical behavior of atmospheric nitrate aerosols has been attracting much attention. However, the photolysis mechanism of NH(4)NO(3 )and its products under different atmospheric conditions remain unclear. In this study, the effects of relative humidity (RH), pH, NH3 , ultraviolet (UV) light intensity and halogen ions (Cl- , Br(-)and I-) on the photolysis of particulate NH4NO3 have been investigated through a flow tube reactor. The results show that RH can significantly enhance the production of gaseous NO2 from the photolysis of NH4NO3 when RH is higher than its deliquescence RH, but almost no NO2 is generated under dry conditions. Under high RH and UV light, the main product of NH4NO3 photolysis is NO2 , rather than NO and HONO, and another main species HNO3 which mainly comes from the hydrolysis of product NO2 in the gas path was detected. Almost no NO2 and HNO3 are produced under high RH without UV light or low RH with UV light, showing the combined effect of high RH and UV irradiation on the photolysis of NH4NO3. In addition, under high RH, the lower the pH and the stronger the light intensity, the higher the NO2 production. Furthermore, surprising yields of NO and HONO are detected in the presence of halogen ions, especially in the presence of I- , indicating the important role of halogen ion in the nitrate photolysis. These results provide new insights into the photolysis of atmospheric nitrate aerosols, and may contribute to elucidating the formation and migration of atmospheric nitrate aerosols and the potential mechanisms of the occurrence and evolution of atmospheric pollution and ozone pollution.

Abstract:Environmental contextAlkyl nitrates are considered to be important intermediates in the atmospheric hydrocarbons–nitrogen oxides–ozone cycle, which significantly determines air quality and nitrogen exchange between the atmosphere and the Earth’s surfaces. The present laboratory study investigates reaction products of alkyl nitrates to elucidate their photochemical reaction mechanisms in the atmosphere. The results provide a better understanding of the role played by alkyl nitrates in the atmospheric environment. AbstractAlkyl nitrates (ANs) are important nitrogen-containing organic compounds and are usually considered to be temporary reservoirs of reactive nitrogen NOx (NO2 and NO) in the atmosphere, although their atmospheric fates are incompletely understood. Here a laboratory study of the gas-phase photolysis and OH-initiated reactions of methyl nitrate (CH3ONO2) and ethyl nitrate (C2H5ONO2), as models of atmospheric ANs, is reported with a focus on elucidating the detailed photochemical reaction mechanisms of ANs in the atmosphere. A series of intermediate and end products were well characterised for the first time from the photochemical reactions of methyl and ethyl nitrate conducted under simulated atmospheric conditions. Notably, for both the photolysis and OH-initiated reactions of CH3ONO2 and C2H5ONO2, unexpectedly high yields of HNO3 (photochemically non-reactive nitrogen) were found and also unexpectedly high yields of peroxyacyl nitrates (RC(O)OONO2, where R = H, CH3, CH3CH2,…) (reactive nitrogen) have been found as CH3C(O)OONO2 in the C2H5ONO2 reaction or proposed as HC(O)OONO2 in the CH3ONO2 reaction. Although the yields of HNO3 from the ANs under ambient conditions are likely variable and different from those obtained in the laboratory experiments reported here, the results imply that the ANs could potentially serve as a sink for reactive nitrogen in the atmosphere. The potential for this dual role of organic nitrates in the nitrogen cycle should be considered in the study of air quality and nitrogen exchange between the atmosphere and surface. Finally, an attempt was made to estimate the production of HNO3 and peroxyacyl nitrates derived from NOx by ANs as intermediates in the atmosphere.
Enhanced Nitrite Production from the Aqueous Photolysis of Nitrate in the Presence of Vanillic Acid and Implications for the Roles of Light-Absorbing Organics

Abstract:A prominent source of hydroxyl radicals (•OH), nitrous acid (HONO) plays a key role in tropospheric chemistry. Apart from direct emission, HONO (or its conjugate base nitrite, NO2-) can be formed secondarily in the atmosphere. Yet, how secondary HONO forms requires elucidation, especially for heterogeneous processes involving numerous organic compounds in atmospheric aerosols. We investigated nitrite production from aqueous photolysis of nitrate for a range of conditions (pH, organic compound, nitrate concentration, and cation). Upon adding small oxygenates such as ethanol, n-butanol, or formate as •OH scavengers, the average intrinsic quantum yield of nitrite [Φ(NO2-)] was 0.75 ± 0.15%. With near-UV-light-absorbing vanillic acid (VA), however, the effective Φ(NO2-) was strongly pH-dependent, reaching 8.0 ± 2.1% at a pH of 8 and 1.5 ± 0.39% at a more atmospherically relevant pH of 5. Our results suggest that brown carbon (BrC) may greatly enhance the nitrite production from the aqueous nitrate photolysis through photosensitizing reactions, where the triplet excited state of BrC may generate solvated electrons, which reduce nitrate to NO2 for further conversion to nitrite. This photosensitization process by BrC chromophores during nitrate photolysis under mildly acidic conditions may partly explain the missing HONO in urban environments.
