Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) topological Weyl semimetals (TWSs) represent a novel state of quantum matter with unusual electronic structures that resemble both a "3D graphene" and a topological insulator by possessing pairs of Weyl points (through which the electronic bands disperse linearly along all three momentum directions) connected by topological surface states, forming the unique "Fermi-arc" type Fermi-surface (FS). Each Weyl point is chiral and contains half of the degrees of freedom of a Dirac point, and can be viewed as a magnetic monopole in the momentum space. Here, by performing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on non-centrosymmetric compound TaAs, we observed its complete band structures including the unique "Fermi-arc" FS and linear bulk band dispersion across the Weyl points, in excellent agreement with the theoretical calculations. This discovery not only confirms TaAs as the first 3D TWS, but also provides an ideal platform for realizing exotic physical phenomena (e.g. negative magnetoresistance, chiral magnetic effects and quantum anomalous Hall effect) which may also lead to novel future applications.
Experimental realization of a Weyl semimetal phase with Fermi arc surface states in TaAs

Abstract:A Weyl semimetal is a gapless topological state of matter described by a unique bulk-boundary correspondence in the electronic band structure. The low-energy bulk electrons are linearlydispersing Weyl fermions, while the Weyl nodes are connected on the boundary by Fermi arc surface states. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show that the inversion-breaking single crystalline compound TaAs hosts an electronic structure with Fermi arc surface states. We directly observe that these Fermi arc surface states terminate into the bulk bands and that these bulk bands disperse linearly, forming Weyl cones. These results are remarkably consistent with recent theoretical predictions of a Weyl semimetal phase in this compound. Our detailed surface and bulk band structure measurements demonstrate that TaAs hosts topologically non-trivial Fermi arcs and Weyl cones, providing the first experimental realization of a Weyl semimetal in condensed matter physics.

Abstract:TaAs as a well-known topological Weyl semimetal has attracted intense interests in recent study. Our structural investigations on the microstructure properties of TaAs samples using Cs-corrected transmission electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy evidently show the presence of a hexagonal phase intergrown with the known tetragonal TaAs (NbAs-type). The structure of the hexagonal phase is identified to have the WC-type structure (space group P6m2) with hexagonal c-axis along the [100]tetra or [010]tetra direction. The crystallographic correlation between the hexagonal and tetragonal phase, as well as the relevant local atomic motions, has been carefully analyzed.
Superconductivity and Quantum Oscillations in Ternary Weyl Semimetal TaIrTe4

Abstract:The search for unconventional superconductivity in Weyl semimetal materials is currently an exciting pursuit, since such superconducting phases could potentially be topologically nontrivial and host exotic Majorana modes. The layered material TaIrTe4 is a newly predicted time-reversal invariant type II Weyl semimetal with minimum Weyl points. Here, by a systematical study based on electrical transport measurements at ultralow temperature and in ultrahigh magnetic field, we discover that TaIrTe4 crystals exhibit quasi one dimensional (quasi 1D) superconductivity with an onset transition temperature (Tc) up to 1.54 K, and observe Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillations with multiple periods reflecting the nontrivial band topology. The normalized upper critical field h*(T/Tc) behavior implies that the discovered superconductivity in TaIrTe4 is unconventional with finite triplet pairing contribution. The observed superconductivity is further confirmed by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) measurements. These results suggest that TaIrTe4 is a novel platform which may be applicable to explore topological superconductivity.

Abstract:We report a new pressure-induced phase in TaAs with different Weyl fermions than the ambient structure with the aid of theoretical calculations, experimental transport and synchrotron structure investigations up to 53 GPa. We show that TaAs transforms from an ambient I4_{1}md phase (t-TaAs) to a high-pressure hexagonal P-6m2 (h-TaAs) phase at 14 GPa, along with changes of the electronic state from containing 24 Weyl nodes distributed at two energy levels to possessing 12 Weyl nodes at an isoenergy level, which substantially reduces the interference between the surface and bulk states. The new pressure-induced phase can be reserved upon releasing pressure to ambient condition, which allows one to study the exotic behavior of a single set of Weyl fermions, such as the interplay between surface states and other properties.

Abstract: TaAs as one of the experimentally discovered topological Weyl semimetal has attracted intense interests recently. The ambient TaAs has two types of Weyl nodes which are not on the same energy level. As an effective way to tune lattice parameters and electronic interactions, high pressure is becoming a significant tool to explore new materials as well as their exotic states. Therefore, it is highly interesting to investigate the behaviors of topological Weyl fermions and possible structural phase transitions in TaAs under pressure. Here, with a combination of ab initio calculations and crystal structure prediction techniques, a new hexagonal P-6m2 phase is predicted in TaAs at pressure around 14 GPa. Surprisingly, this new phase is a topological semimetal with only single set of Weyl nodes exactly on the same energy level. The phase transition pressure from the experimental measurements, including electrical transport measurements and Raman spectroscopy, agrees with our theoretical prediction reasonably. Moreover, the P-6m2 phase seems to be quenched recoverable to ambient pressure, which increases the possibilities of further study on the exotic behaviors of single set of Weyl fermions, such as the interplay between surface states and other properties.

Abstract:Weyl fermions are massless chiral fermions that play an important role in quantum field theory but have never been observed as fundamental particles. A Weyl semimetal is an unusual crystal that hosts Weyl fermions as quasiparticle excitations and features Fermi arcs on its surface. Such a semimetal not only provides a condensed matter realization of the anomalies in quantum field theories but also demonstrates the topological classification beyond the gapped topological insulators. Here, we identify a topological Weyl semimetal state in the transition metal monopnictide materials class. Our first-principles calculations on TaAs reveal its bulk Weyl fermion cones and surface Fermi arcs. Our results show that in the TaAs-type materials the Weyl semimetal state does not depend on fine-tuning of chemical composition or magnetic order, which opens the door for the experimental realization of Weyl semimetals and Fermi arc surface states in real materials.

Abstract:Topological crystalline metals and semimetals (TCMs) have stimulated great research interest, which broadens the classification of topological phases and provides a valuable platform to explore topological superconductivity. Here, we report the discovery of superconductivity and topological features in Pb-intercalated transition-metal dichalcogenide Pb1/3TaS2. Systematic measurements indicate that Pb1/3TaS2 is a quasi-two-dimensional (q-2D) type-II superconductor (T-c approximate to 2.8 K) with a significantly enhanced anisotropy of upper critical field (gamma H-c2 = H-c2(ab) / H-c2(c) approximate to 17). In addition, first-principles calculations reveal that Pb1/3TaS2 hosts multiple topological Dirac fermions in the electronic band structure. We discover four groups of Dirac nodal lines on the k(z) = pi plane and two sets of Dirac points on the rotation or screw axes, which are protected by crystalline symmetries and robust against spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Dirac-cone-like surface states emerge on the (001) surface because of band inversion. Our work shows that the TCM candidate Pb1/3TaS2 is a promising arena to study the interplay between superconductivity and topological Dirac fermions.
A strongly robust topological Weyl fermion semimetal state in Ta3S2

Abstract:Weyl semimetals are extremely interesting because they provide the first realization of the Weyl fermion, expand the classification of topological phases beyond band insulators, exhibit exotic quantum anomalies, and host novel Fermi arc surface states. Although the first Weyl semimetal was recently discovered in TaAs, research progress on this newly discovered topological phase is still significantly hindered due to the lack of robust and ideal materials candidates. In order to observe the many predicted exotic phenomena that arise from Weyl fermions, it is of critical importance to find robust and ideal Weyl semimetals, which have fewer Weyl nodes and more importantly whose Weyl nodes are well separated in momentum space and are located close to the chemical potential in energy. In this paper, we propose by far the most robust and ideal Weyl semimetal candidate in the inversion breaking, single crystalline compound tantalum sulfide Ta3S2 with new and novel properties beyond TaAs. We find that Ta3S2 has only 8 Weyl nodes, all of which have the same energy that is merely 10 meV below the chemical potential. Crucially, our results show that Ta3S2 has the largest k-space separation between Weyl nodes among known Weyl semimetal candidates, which is about twice larger than TaAs and twenty times larger than the predicted value in WTe2. Moreover, we predict that increasing the lattice by< 4% can annihilate all Weyl nodes, driving a novel topological metal-to-insulator transition from a Weyl semimetal state to a topological insulator state. Abstract:Weyl semimetals can be described as the three-dimensional analogue of graphene, showing linear dispersion around nodes (Weyl points) [1]. Tantalum arsenide (TaAs) is among the most studied Weyl semimetals. It has been demonstrated that TaAs has a very high value of the real part of the complex refractive index in the infrared region [2]. In this work we show one-dimensional photonic crystals alternating TaAs with SiO2 or TiO2 and a microcavity where a layer of TaAs is embedded between two SiO2-TiO2 multilayer.

Abstract:Topological materials and topological phases have recently become a hot topic in condensed matter physics. In this work, we report an In-intercalated transition-metal dichalcogenide In,TaSe 2 (named 112 system), a topological nodal-line semimetal in the presence of both charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity. In the x = 0.58 sample, the 2 x root 3 commensurate CDW (CCDW) and the 2 x 2 CCDW are observed below 116 and 77 K, respectively. Consistent with theoretical calculations, the spin-orbital coupling gives rise to two twofold-degenerate nodal rings (Weyl rings) connected by drumhead surface states, confirmed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our results suggest that the 2 x 2 CCDW ordering gaps out one Weyl ring in accordance with the CDW band folding, while the other Weyl ring remains gapless with intact surface states. In addition, superconductivity emerges at 0.91 K, with the upper critical field deviating from the s-wave behavior at low temperature, implying possibly unconventional superconductivity. Therefore, we think this type of the 112 system may possess abundant physical states and offer a platform to investigate the interplay between CDW, nontrivial band topology and superconductivity. Enhanced Anisotropic Superconductivity in the Topological Nodal-Line Semimetal InxTaS2

Abstract:Coexistence of topological bands and charge density wave (CDW) in topological materials has attracted immense attentions because of their fantastic properties, such as axionic-CDW, three-dimensional quantum Hall effect, etc. In this work, a nodal-line semimetal InxTaS2 characterized by CDW and superconductivity is successfully synthesized, whose structure and topological bands (two separated Wely rings) are similar to In0.58TaSe2. A 2 x 2 commensurate CDW is observed at low temperature in InxTaS2, identified by transport properties and STM measurements. Moreover, superconductivity emerges below 0.69 K, and the anisotropy ratio of upper critical field [Gamma = H||ab c2(0)=H||c c2(0)] is significantly enhanced compared to 2H-TaS2, which shares the same essential layer unit. According to the Lawrence-Doniach model, the enhanced Gamma may be explained by the reduced effective mass in kx-ky plane, where Weyl rings locate. Therefore, this type of layered topological systems may offer a platform to investigate highly anisotropic superconductivity and to understand the extremely large upper critical field in the bulk or in the two-dimensional limit.
High Thermoelectric Performance of Weyl Semimetal TaAs

Abstract:The existence of Weyl nodes predicted in TaAs has been confirmed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, which provides potential applications in thermoelectric devices due to the extraordinary transport properties of TaAs. By using first-principles calculations and semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory, we study the electrical transport properties of TaAs. High anisotropy is observed in the electrical transport of TaAs. The obtained Seebeck coefficients are in good agreement with experimental values. The lattice dynamics properties of TaAs are also investigated and the obtained phonon frequencies agree well with the measurements. The lattice thermal conductivity is calculated using the self-consistent iterative approach. Anisotropic lattice thermal conductivity is observed as well. Maximum thermoelectric figure of merit zT of 0.63 at 900 K is found for n-doping TaAs along zz direction. Finally, the size dependence of lattice thermal conductivity and corresponding thermoelectric properties are investigated for designing thermoelectric nanostructures. The work sheds light on the nature of the thermoelectric response of Weyl semimetal.

Abstract:Interfaces between materials with different crystal structures and electronic properties offer an approach for creating and controlling novel quantum states of matter, in which inversion symmetry breaking and other effects at the boundaries may introduce additional electronic states. Here the observation of superconductivity at approximate to 3 K at the interface of the Weyl semimetal TaAs and the normal metal Ag is reported, as evidenced by soft-point-contact spectroscopy and the standard four-probe resistance measurements. This is different from the previous reports on interface superconductivity based on the materials that are known to be superconducting in bulk; here both TaAs and Ag are not superconducting even via chemical doping or application of high pressure. The topologically nontrivial band structure of TaAs is considered to play a crucial role in this system and an unconventional Cooper pairing would be expected. This finding opens up a new route for the realization and study of the possible topological superconductivity.
Crystal growth and transport properties of Weyl semimetal TaAs

Abstract:We report the single crystal growth and transport properties of a Weyl semimetal TaAs. Unsaturated large magnetoresistance of about 22 100% at 2 K and 9 T is observed. From the Hall measurement, carrier concentrations n = 4.608 × 1024 m-3 and p = 3.099 × 1024 m-3, and mobilities µ p = 2.502 m2 V-1 s-1 and µ n = 16.785 m2 V-1 s-1 at 2 K are extracted. The de Haas-van Alphen oscillations at 2 K and 9 T suggest the presence of a Fermi surface, and the quantum electronic parameters such as effective cyclotron mass and Dingle temperature were obtained using Lifshitz-Kosevich fitting. Temperature dependent resistivity measurements at different static magnetic fields suggest the formation of an insulating gap in the Weyl semimetal TaAs. An angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study reveals Fermi arc surface states with different shaped features such as a long elliptical contour around each [Formula: see text] point, a bowtie-shaped contour around each [Formula: see text] point, and a crescent-shaped feature near the midpoint of each [Formula: see text] line.

Abstract:We report a topological semimetal W2As3 with a space group C2/m. Based on the first-principles calculations, band crossings are partially gapped when spin-orbit coupling is included. The Z2 indices at the electron filling are [1;111], characterizing a strong topological insulator and topological surface states. From the magnetotransport measurements, nearly quadratic field dependence of magnetoresistance (MR) (B || [200]) at 3 K indicates an electron-hole compensated compound whose longitudinal MR reaches 115 at 3 K and 15 T. In addition, multiband features are detected from the high-magnetic-field Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillation, Hall resistivity, and band calculations. A nontrivial pi Berry's phase is obtained, suggesting the topological feature of this material. A two- band model can fit well the conductivity and Hall coefficient. Our experiments manifest that the transport properties of W2As3 are in good agreement with the theoretical calculations.

Abstract:MX monopnictide compounds (M=Nb,Ta, X = As,P) are prototypical three-dimensional Weyl semimetals (WSMs) that have been shown in bulk single crystal form to have potential for a wide variety of novel devices due to topologically protected band structures and high mobilities. However, very little is known about thin film synthesis, which is essential to enable device applications. We synthesize TaAs(001) epilayers by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs(001) and provide an experimental phase diagram illustrating conditions for single phase, single-crystal-like growth. We investigate the relationship between nanoscale defects and electronic structure, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, Kelvin probe microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Our results provide a roadmap and platform for developing 3D WSMs for device applications.
