Abstract:Magnetoelectric (ME) effect experimentally discovered about 60 years ago remains one of the promising research fields with the main applications in microelectronics and sensors. However, its applications to biology and medicine are still in their infancy. For the diagnosis and treatment of diseases at the intracellular level, it is necessary to develop a maximally non-invasive way of local stimulation of individual neurons, navigation, and distribution of biomolecules in damaged cells with relatively high efficiency and adequate spatial and temporal resolution. Recently developed ME materials (composites), which combine elastically coupled piezoelectric (PE) and magnetostrictive (MS) phases, have been shown to yield very strong ME effects even at room temperature. This makes them a promising toolbox for solving many problems of modern medicine. The main ME materials, processing technologies, as well as most prospective biomedical applications will be overviewed, and modern trends in using ME materials for future therapies, wireless power transfer, and optogenetics will be considered.

Abstract:Relevance. Magnets have long been used to treat various diseases, especially in inflammatory processes. According to existing historical data, magnetotherapy was already used in ancient times by the Chinese, Egyptians and Greeks. Different magnetic field strengths affect cells in different ways, with medium-strength magnetic fields being the most widely used. The review presents a brief history and current state of the issue of using a magnetic field in bone tissue regeneration. Modern knowledge about the mechanisms of physiological and reparative regeneration, restoration of bone tissue is clarified, and modern areas of bone tissue engineering are considered, taking into account the characteristics of microcirculation and the effect of a magnetic field on the physiology of bone tissue and reparative regeneration. One of the key findings of the review is that the magnetic field improves bone tissue repair by influencing the metabolic behavior of cells. Studies show that magnetotherapy promotes the activation of cellular processes, accelerates the formation of new bone tissue and improves its quality. It is also noted that the magnetic field has a positive effect on microcirculation, improving the blood supply to tissues and facilitating a better supply of nutrients to the site of injury. This contributes to faster wound healing and early rehabilitation of patients. Conclusion. Magnetotherapy is one of the effective physical and rehabilitation methods of treatment that will become increasingly important in modern medicine. However, further research is needed to better understand the mechanisms of action of a magnetic field on bone tissue and to determine the optimal parameters for its application.

Abstract:The use of magnetic fields and field gradients to move magnetic material and devices within the human body has a surprisingly long history. Over the past two decades, there has been renewed interest in this area with the growth of magnetic medical microrobots. In this article, we focus on the state-of-the-art and future directions for magnetically actuated medical robots from an in vivo perspective. We initially review the history and relevant physics followed by a discussion on the limited in vivo research efforts that investigate magnetically guided devices. Our focus is on magnetically guided tethered probes, untethered devices (microrobots and nanorobots), and magnetic navigation systems that have been or could be utilized in vivo to provide increased control and safety for the physician and patient.

Abstract:Nanotechnology has opened new doors of exploration, particularly in materials science and healthcare. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNP), the tiny magnets, because of their various properties, have the potential to bring about radical changes in the field of medicine. The distinctive surface chemistry, nontoxicity, biocompatibility, and, in particular, the inducible magnetic moment of magnetic materials has attracted a great deal of interest in morphological structures from a variety of scientific domains. This review presents a concise overview of MNPs and their crucial properties and synthesis routes. It also aims to highlight the continuous synthesis methods available for MNP production. In recent years, the use of computational methods for understanding the behavior of nanoparticles has been on the rise. Thus, we also discuss the numerical models developed to understand how magnetic nanoparticles can be used in magnetic hyperthermia and targeting the Circle of Wilis. With the increasing use of MNPs in biomedical applications, it becomes necessary to understand the mechanisms of toxicity, which are elucidated in this review. The review focuses on the biomedical applications of MNPs in drug delivery, theranostics, and MRI contrasting agents. We anticipate that this article will broaden the perspective on magnetic nanoparticles and help to understand their functionality and applicability better.

Abstract:In this article an overview of the historical development of the key ideas in the field of magnetism is presented. The presentation is semi-technical in <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://nature.Starting" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> by noting down important contribution of Greeks, William Gilbert, Coulomb, Poisson, Oersted, Ampere, Faraday, Maxwell, and Pierre Curie, we review early 20th century investigations by Paul Langevin and Pierre Weiss. The Langevin theory of paramagnetism and the Weiss theory of ferromagnetism were partly successful and real understanding of magnetism came with the advent of quantum mechanics. Van Vleck was the pioneer in applying quantum mechanics to the problem of magnetism and we discuss his main contributions: (1) his detailed quantum statistical mechanical study of magnetism of real gases; (2) his pointing out the importance of the crystal fields or ligand fields in the magnetic behavior of iron group salts (the ligand field theory); and (3) his many contributions to the elucidation of exchange interactions in d electron metals. Next, the pioneering contributions (but lesser known) of Dorfman are discussed. Then, in chronological order, the key contributions of Pauli, Heisenberg, and Landau are presented. Finally, we discuss a modern topic of quantum spin liquids.

Abstract:The use of nanoparticles has increased significantly over the past few years in a number of fields, including diagnostics, biomedicine, environmental remediation, and water treatment, generating public interest. Among various types of nanoparticles, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have emerged as an essential tool for biomedical applications due to their distinct physicochemical properties compared to other nanoparticles. This review article focuses on the recent growth of MNPs and comprehensively reviews the advantages, multifunctional approaches, biomedical applications, and latest research on MNPs employed in various biomedical techniques. Biomedical applications of MNPs hold on to their ability to rapidly switch magnetic states under an external field at room temperature. Ideally, these MNPs should be highly susceptible to magnetization when the field is applied and then lose that magnetization just as quickly once the field is removed. This unique property allows MNPs to generate heat when exposed to high-frequency magnetic fields, making them valuable tools in developing treatments for hyperthermia and other heat-related illnesses. This review underscores the role of MNPs as tools that hold immense promise in transforming various aspects of healthcare, from diagnostics and imaging to therapeutic treatments, with discussion on a wide range of peer-reviewed articles published on the subject. At the conclusion of this work, challenges and potential future advances of MNPs in the biomedical field are highlighted.

Abstract:The ability to manipulate magnetic nanoparticles with external magnetic fields and their compatibility with biological systems make them versatile tools in the field of nanomedicine. Recently, the integration of various nanotechnologies with biomedical science, pharmacology, and clinical practice has led to the emergence of the discipline of nanomedicine. Owing to the special qualities of nanoparticles and related nanostructures, their uses in controlled drug and gene delivery, imaging, medical diagnostics, monitoring therapeutic outcomes, and supporting medical interventions offer a fresh approach to difficult problems in difficult areas like the treatment of cancer or crippling neurological diseases. The potential for multi-functionality and advanced targeting tactics in nanoparticle products exists. It may maximize the effectiveness of current anticancer drugs by enhancing the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic characteristics of conventional therapies. These nanometer-sized substances’ distinctive electrical, magnetic, and optical characteristics have opened up a wide range of biological uses. As they may be used in healthcare situations due to their bioactivity, iron-oxide-based magnetic nanoparticles, in particular, have been shown to be incredibly useful deep-tissue scanning tools. In addition to having a broader operating temperature range, smaller size, reduced toxicity, easier processing, and less cost of production, newer nanoparticles (MNPs) also offer other benefits. MNPs offer a lot of promise for use in clinical settings because of a variety of exceptional and distinctive chemical and biological features. Modern targeting techniques and nanoparticles studied in clinical trials are included in this review. It highlights the difficulties in applying nanomedicine items and transferring them from the laboratory to the clinical environment. It also addresses topics of nanoparticle design that might create new clinical applications for nanomedicine items. Magnetic nanoparticles used in nanomedicine offer several novel and promising features that make them valuable tools for various applications. When utilized in nanomedicine, magnetic nanoparticles have a number of exciting new properties that make them useful instruments for a range of uses. Drug delivery, hyperthermia therapy, magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents, diagnostic imaging and monitoring, theranostic applications, biocompatibility and biodegradability, remote control and manipulation, and responsive nanoparticles are the main factors that add to their novelty. In general, the amalgamation of nanoscale characteristics and magnetic properties presents a multitude of opportunities for inventive medical applications, offering focused, effective, and least intrusive approaches to diagnosis and treatment. The sector is still investigating novel ways to increase the safety and efficacy of magnetic nanoparticles in nanomedicine. The purpose of this article is to provide basic details about magnetic nanoparticles and the characteristics of these particles in biomedical applications. The features of these nanoparticles in medication delivery and their numerous uses have received extra focus in the study. Abstract:This review outlines diverse magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) designs, materials, morphologies, and characterization methods. It assesses various MNP synthesis techniques, their pros and cons, and explores inorganic and organic surface coatings. Biomedical MNP applications are covered, spanning hyperthermia, MRI, drug delivery, biosensors, and magnetic particle imaging. Future MNP structure trends and novel biomedical prospects are also discussed. Nowadays, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are applied in numerous fields, especially in biomedical applications. Since biofluidic samples and biological tissues are nonmagnetic, negligible background signals can interfere with the magnetic signals from MNPs in magnetic biosensing and imaging applications. In addition, the MNPs can be remotely controlled by magnetic fields, which make it possible for magnetic separation and targeted drug delivery. Furthermore, due to the unique dynamic magnetizations of MNPs when subjected to alternating magnetic fields, MNPs are also proposed as a key tool in cancer treatment, an example is magnetic hyperthermia therapy. Due to their distinct surface chemistry, good biocompatibility, and inducible magnetic moments, the material and morphological structure design of MNPs has attracted enormous interest from a variety of scientific domains. Herein, a thorough review of the chemical synthesis strategies of MNPs, the methodologies to modify the MNPs surface for better biocompatibility, the physicochemical characterization techniques for MNPs, as well as some representative applications of MNPs in disease diagnosis and treatment are provided. Further portions of the review go into the diagnostic and therapeutic uses of composite MNPs with core/shell structures as well as a deeper analysis of MNP properties to learn about potential biomedical applications.

Abstract:The physical principles underlying some current biomedical applications of magnetic nanoparticles are reviewed. Starting from well-known basic concepts, and drawing on examples from biology and biomedicine, the relevant physics of magnetic materials and their responses to applied magnetic fields are surveyed. The way these properties are controlled and used is illustrated with reference to (i) magnetic separation of labelled cells and other biological entities; (ii) therapeutic drug, gene and radionuclide delivery; (iii) radio frequency methods for the catabolism of tumours via hyperthermia; and (iv) contrast enhancement agents for magnetic resonance imaging applications. Future prospects are also discussed.

Abstract:Highlights • Magnetosomes are unique and interesting natural intracellular organelles mineralized in magnetotactic bacteria. • Natural phospholipid bilayer endows magnetosomes with easily modified functional groups for broader applications. • Magnetosomes can become a breakthrough in biomedicine which integrates magnetism, biomedicine, and mineralogy et al. Magnetosomes, synthesized by magnetotactic bacteria (MTB), have been used in nano- and biotechnological applications, owing to their unique properties such as superparamagnetism, uniform size distribution, excellent bioavailability, and easily modifiable functional groups. In this review, we first discuss the mechanisms of magnetosome formation and describe various modification methods. Abstract:Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have found extensive application in the biomedical domain due to their enhanced biocompatibility, minimal toxicity, and strong magnetic responsiveness. MNPs exhibit great potential as nanomaterials in various biomedical applications, including disease detection and cancer therapy. Typically, MNPs consist of a magnetic core surrounded by surface modification coatings, such as inorganic materials, organic molecules, and polymers, forming a nucleoshell structure that mitigates nanoparticle agglomeration and enhances targeting capabilities. Consequently, MNPs exhibit magnetic responsiveness in vivo for transportation and therapeutic effects, such as enhancing medical imaging resolution and localized heating at the site of injury. MNPs are utilized for specimen purification through targeted binding and magnetic separation in vitro, thereby optimizing efficiency and expediting the process. This review delves into the distinctive functional characteristics of MNPs as well as the diverse bioactive molecules employed in their surface coatings and their corresponding functionalities. Additionally, the advancement of MNPs in various applications is outlined. Additionally, we discuss the advancements of magnetic nanoparticles in medical imaging, disease treatment, and in vitro assays, and we anticipate the future development prospects and obstacles in this field. Abstract:The presented article discusses recent advances in biomedical applications of classical Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), with a focus on operating principles and associated material considerations. These applications address novel approaches to common biomedical problems from micro-particle sorting for lab-on-a-chip devices to advanced physiological monitoring techniques. 100 papers in the field of MHDs were reviewed with a focus on studies with direct biomedical applications. The body of literature was categorized into three primary areas of research including Material Considerations for MHD Applications, MHD Actuation Devices, and MHD Sensing Techniques. The state of the art in the field was examined and research topics were connected to provide a wide view of the field of biomedical MHDs. As this field develops, the need for advanced simulation and material design will continue to increase in importance in order to further expand its reach to maturity. As the field of biomedical MHDs continues to grow, advances towards micro-scale transitions will continue to be made, maintaining its clinically driven nature and moving towards real-world applications.
