Abstract:Ozone enhancement was observed in the lower troposphere over Hong Kong and Kunming on 7 and 8 March 2001 using the electrochemical concentration cell ozonesondes. Based on the data of NCEP, total column ozone, numerical simulation of MM5, AI from TOMS, aerosol optical depths from MODIS, and CO concentration from MOPITT, the influence of biomass burning in Southeast Asia on the ozone distribution in the lower troposphere over Hong Kong and Kunming is analyzed. The transport of the emissions of biomass burning shows that the enhancement of the lower tropospheric ozone over Hong Kong and Kunming is from the region where large-scale fires occurred in Southeast Asia. TOMS AI images and the atmospheric background circulations reveal that the biomass burning plumes in Southeast Asia can be transported to downwind South/Southwest China and lead to enhancement of the ozone concentration in the lower troposphere.

Abstract:Typhoons could influence air quality via multiple chemical and physical process and has attracted much scientific attention. A typical typhoon, In-Fa, passed through Yangtze River Delta (YRD) and Jing-Jin-Ji (JJJ) after it made a landfall in China. Under such influences, two city clusters both experienced high ozone (O 3 ) concentrations, with JJJ about 5 days earlier than YRD. Data from several environmental monitoring sites and three regional sites indicated that cross-regional transport and biogenic emissions both played an important role in O 3 formation. During the typhoon process, O 3 precursors were first transported from YRD and its surrounding areas to JJJ due to the summer monsoon. After that, air masses from northern China returned to YRD due to the peripheral winds of the typhoon. High O 3 was concentrated in downwind regions, causing fast secondary formation. The peripheral winds and downdrafts of typhoon led to high temperature and stagnant weather, favorable for biogenic emissions. Observed isoprene concentration was doubled. The ratio of isoprene to VOCs also increased by around 5%. The modeling results showed the contribution of BVOCs to O 3 could reach 10 ppb in JJJ when the typhoon made its landfall in YRD. When the typhoon moved to JJJ, the cross-transport of air masses from northern China to YRD contributed half of biogenic-emission-related O 3 . Our research extends the knowledge into the importance of biogenic emissions to O 3 and cross-regional transport during a typhoon process.

Abstract:Typhoons are one of the most important weather systems that can cause severe ozone (O 3 ) pollution in eastern China. While the effects of individual typhoons on O 3 concentrations have been extensively studied, the effects of consecutive northward typhoons and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear, partly due to the complex processes involved. Here, Typhoons Maysak and Haishen, two consecutive northward typhoons in 2020, are selected to investigate their impact on the O 3 pollution in eastern China. The results show that consecutive northward typhoons not only produced and maintained meteorological conditions conducive to O 3 generation (e.g., elevated temperatures and intensified solar radiation), but also facilitated local accumulation and cross-regional transport of O 3 . These factors jointly led to a 30% increase in O 3 concentration in eastern China with a prolonged period of O 3 pollution. Our work underscores the significance of complex meteorological conditions in O 3 pollution occurrences during extreme weather events, advancing our understanding of how consecutive northward typhoons affect air quality.

Impacts of Northward Typhoons on Autumn Haze Pollution Over North China Plain

Abstract:Abstract Although air quality in China has improved substantially over recent years, haze pollution events still occur frequently, especially over the North China Plain (NCP). Previous studies showed that typhoons are conducive to regional pollution events in eastern China; however, the underlying mechanism and quantitative understanding of the typhoons' impact on haze pollution remain unclear there. Here, based on ground‐based and satellite observations, reanalysis data, and model simulations, we show that northward typhoons approaching China are essential for autumn haze pollution over NCP. Elevated relative humidity levels and enhanced pollution accumulation, caused by northward typhoons and the corresponding high‐pressure systems, are responsible for the pollution enhancements over NCP. Compared with episodes without typhoon influence, cities near Taihang and Yan Mountain suffer from heavier haze pollution when typhoons approach, with PM 2.5 concentrations increasing from 87.1 to 106.4 μg m −3 . More water vapor from the Yellow and Bohai Seas and pollutants from eastern China are transported to these cities by typhoon‐induced southeasterly wind anomalies, facilitating the chemical formation of aerosols there. In addition, by the block of mountains, these southeasterly wind anomalies also lead to stronger local accumulation over cities and an elevation of pollutants along the mountains. What is more, with the implementation of emission reduction, the relative changes of PM 2.5 concentrations between typhoon‐induced episodes and no‐typhoon episodes increase. This work highlights the importance of understanding the impact of synoptical weather on PM 2.5 transport, accumulation, and formation processes in haze pollution mitigation in eastern China.

Abstract:Ozone ( O 3 ) pollution research and management in China have mainly focused on anthropogenic emissions, while the importance of natural processes is often overlooked. With the increasing frequency of extreme weather events, the role of natural processes in exacerbating O 3 pollution is gaining attention. In September 2022, the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in southern China experienced an extended period (25 d) of regional O 3 exceedances and high temperatures (second highest over last 2 decades) due to extreme weather conditions influenced by the subtropical high and typhoon peripheries. Employing an integrated approach involving field measurements, machine learning and numerical model simulations, we investigated the impact of weather-induced natural processes on O 3 pollution by considering meteorological factors, natural emissions, chemistry pathways and atmospheric transport. The hot weather intensified the emission of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) by ∼10 %. Isoprene and biogenic formaldehyde accounted for 47 % of the in situ O 3 production, underscoring the predominant role of BVOC emissions in natural processes. The chemical pathway of isoprene contributing to O 3 formation was further explored, with O 3 production more attributable to the further degradation of early generation isoprene oxidation products (contributed 64.5 %) than the direct isoprene oxidation itself (contributed 35.5 %). Besides, it was found that the hot weather significantly promoted regional photochemical reactions, with meteorological factors contributing to an additional 10.8 ppb of O 3 levels compared to normal conditions. Temperature was identified as the dominant meteorological factor. Furthermore, the typhoon nearing landfall significantly enhanced the cross-regional transport of O 3 from northern to southern China through stratosphere–troposphere exchange (STE). The CAM-Chem model simulations revealed that the STE-induced O 3 on the PRD surface could reach a maximum of ∼8 ppb, highlighting the non-negligible impact of STE. This study highlights the importance of natural processes exacerbated by extreme weather events in O 3 pollution and provides valuable insights into O 3 pollution control under global warming.

The impact of peripheral circulation characteristics of typhoon on sustained ozone episodes over the Pearl River Delta region, China

Abstract:Abstract. It is widely reported that the peripheral circulation of typhoon favors for the formation of sustained ozone episodes. However, the process how it impact on the day-to-day ozone pollution levels during the episodes have not been clearly studies, which is crucial for better prediction of the daily ozone variation. In this study, the analysis of ground observation, wind profile data, and model simulation are integrated. By analyzing the wind profile radar observations, we found a weak winds depth deepening (WWDD; vertical depth of the weak winds increased), which is more correlated to the ground-level ozone variation than surface weak wind. Long-term statistical analyses show that the WWDD is a common weather phenomenon that occurs in the peripheral subsidence region of typhoons and was generally accompanied by ozone pollution episodes. WRF-Chem with process analysis simulation show that under the impact of the peripheral subsidence chemical formation (CHEM) and vertical mixing (VMIX) effects are two major contributors to the enhancement of ozone levels, while the advection (ADV) are always negative values. But regarding the daily variability of the daytime ozone levels during the episode, it do not determined by the daily variation of daytime CHEM and VMIX, but that of the ADV term. A detail day-to-day analysis show that weak subsidence associated with typhoon periphery provide the premise for the clear sky and warmer air, which is conducive for the ozone photolysis formation (CHEM) above the ground in planetary boundary layer (PBL) and compensate the ozone through the positive VMIX effects on the ground. The WWDD induced by the peripheral circulation of typhoon system provide the premise for the day-to-day positive contribution of ADV term to ozone enhancement, which play an important role in determining the day-to-day daytime ozone variation. These results indicate the important role of the WWDD in the lower troposphere for the formation of sustained ozone episodes due to the peripheral circulation of the typhoon, which helps to better predict the daily changes of daytime ozone levels.

In this study, we analysed the general influence of typhoons on O3 pollution in the PRD via systematic comparisons of meteorological conditions, O3 processes and sources on O3 pollution days with and without typhoon occurrence (denoted as the typhoon-induced and no-typhoon scenarios, respectively) and also examined the differences in these influences in autumn and summer. The results show that the approach of typhoons was accompanied by higher wind speeds and strengthened downdraughts in autumn, as well as the inflows of more polluted air masses in summer, suggesting favourable O3 transport conditions in the typhoon-induced scenario in both seasons. However, the effect of typhoons on the production and accumulation of O3 were distinct. Typhoons led to reduced cloud cover, and thus stronger solar radiation in autumn, which accelerated O3 production, but the shorter residence time of local air masses was unfavourable for the accumulation of O3 within the PRD. In contrast, in summer, typhoons increased cloud cover, and weakened solar radiation, thus restraining O3 formation, but the growing residence time of local air masses favoured O3 accumulation. The modelling results using the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model for the typical O3 pollution days suggest increasing contributions from the transport processes and sources outside the PRD for O3 pollution, confirming enhanced O3 transport under typhoon influence in both seasons. The results of the process analysis in CMAQ suggest that the chemical process contributed more in autumn but less in summer in the PRD. Since O3 production and accumulation cannot be enhanced at the same time, the proportion of O3 contributed by emissions within the PRD was likely to decrease in both seasons. The difference in the typhoon influence on O3 processes in autumn and summer can be attributed to the seasonal variation of the East Asian monsoon. Abstract:Landfall typhoons can significantly affect O3 in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region. In this study, we investigate a unique case characterized by two multiday regional O3 pollution episodes related to four successive landfall typhoons in the summer of 2018 in the YRD. The results show that O3 pollution episodes mainly occurred during the period from the end of a typhoon to the arrival of the next typhoon. The time when a typhoon reached the 24 h warning line and the time when the typhoon dies away in mainland China can be roughly regarded as time nodes. Meanwhile, the variations of O3 were related to the track, duration and landing intensity of the typhoons. The impact of typhoons on O3 was like a wave superimposed on the background of high O3 concentration in the YRD in summer. When a typhoon was near the 24 h warning line before it landed on the coastline of the YRD, the prevailing wind originally from the ocean changed to be from inland, and it transported lots of precursors from the polluted areas to the YRD. Under influences of the typhoon, the low temperature, strong upward airflows, more precipitation and wild wind hindered occurrences of high O3 episodes. After the passing of the typhoon, the air below the 700 hPa atmospheric layer was warm and dry, and the downward airflows resumed. The low troposphere was filed with high concentration of O3 due to O3-rich air transported from the low stratosphere and strong photochemical reactions. It is noteworthy that O3 was mainly generated in the middle of the boundary layer (∼ 1000 m) instead of at the surface. High O3 levels remained in the residual layer at night, and would be transported to the surface by downward airflows or turbulence by the second day. Moreover, O3 can be accumulated and trapped on the ground due to the poor diffusion conditions because the vertical diffusion and horizontal diffusion were suppressed by downward airflows and light wind, respectively. The premature deaths attributed to O3 exposure in the YRD during the study period were 194.0, more than the casualties caused directly by the typhoons. This work has enhanced our understanding of how landfall typhoons affect O3 in the YRD and thus can be useful in forecasting O3 pollution in regions strongly influenced by typhoon activities.

Aerosol‐Radiation Interactions of Dust Storm Deteriorate Particle and Ozone Pollution in East China

Abstract:East Asia features frequent dust storms and intensive anthropogenic emissions. The mixing of natural dust and anthropogenic pollutants exerts complicated impacts on air pollution and regional climate. Studies have focused on chemical interactions of the mixed pollution, while the meteorological feedback and influences on atmospheric chemistry have not been fully investigated. Here, a comprehensive study on a widespread dust storm and its influence on the air quality downwind was conducted by combining multiple observations and modeling. We found that dust originated from Gobi Desert was mixed with anthropogenic pollutants after transported to the Yangtze River Delta (YRD). Through scattering and absorbing radiation, dust aerosol perturbed solar energy budget and led to a more stabilized planetary boundary layer (PBL). A reduction of 15% in PBL height (184 m) weakened the dispersion of locally emitted pollutants and increased primary pollution by 10% in YRD city clusters. Besides, the mixed plume over offshore areas warmed the entire lower atmosphere and increased surface evaporation. Accordingly, ozone formation was accelerated by similar to 1 ppbv/h within PBL under higher temperature, and secondary aerosol was increased due to faster photochemical and heterogeneous oxidation. Such enhancements substantially contributed to air quality deterioration in YRD region. This work reveals the complexity of interactions between natural dust and anthropogenic pollutants through both atmospheric chemistry and meteorological feedbacks, which is of great importance in both regional air pollution and climate.
Impact of a subtropical high and a typhoon on a severe ozone pollution episode in the Pearl River Delta, China

Abstract:Abstract. A record-breaking severe ozone (O3) pollution episode occurred in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in early autumn 2019 when the PRD was under the influence of a Pacific subtropical high followed by Typhoon Mitag. In this study, we analyzed the effects of meteorological and photochemical processes on the O3 concentration in the PRD during this episode by carrying out the Weather Research Forecast–Community Multiscale Air Quality (WRF-CMAQ) model simulations. Results showed that low relative humidity, high boundary layer height, weak northerly surface wind, and strong downdrafts were the main meteorological factors contributing to O3 pollution. Moreover, delayed sea breezes that lasted into the night would transport O3 from the sea back to the land and resulted in secondary O3 maxima at night. In addition, O3 and its precursors stored in the residual layer above the surface layer at night can be mixed down to the surface in the next morning, further enhancing the daytime ground-level O3 concentration on the following day. Photochemical production of O3, with a daytime average production rate of about 7.2 ppb h−1 (parts per billion), is found to be the predominate positive contributor to the O3 budget of the boundary layer (0–1260 m) during the entire O3 episode, while the horizontal and vertical transport fluxes are the dominant negative contributors. This O3 episode accounted for 10 out of the yearly total of 51 d when the maximum daily 8 h average (MDA8) O3 concentration exceeded the national standard of 75 ppb in the PRD in 2019. Based on these results, we propose that the enhanced photochemical production of O3 during the episode is a major cause of the most severe O3 pollution year since the official O3 observation started in the PRD in 2006. Moreover, since this O3 episode is a synoptic-scale phenomenon covering the entire eastern China, we also suggest that the enhanced photochemical production of O3 in this O3 episode is a major cause of the extraordinarily high O3 concentrations observed in eastern China in 2019.

Abstract:Ozone pollution presents a growing air quality threat in urban agglomerations in China. It remains challenge to distinguish the roles of emissions of precursors, chemical production and transportations in shaping the ground-level ozone trends, largely due to complicated interactions among these 3 major processes. This study elucidates the formation factors of ozone pollution and categorizes them into local emissions (anthropogenic and biogenic emissions), transport (precursor transport and direct transport from various regions), and meteorology. Particularly, we attribute meteorology, which affects biogenic emissions and chemical formation as well as transportation, to a perturbation term with fluctuating ranges. The Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model was utilized to implement this framework, using the Pearl River Delta region as a case study, to simulate a severe ozone pollution episode in autumn 2019 that affected the entire country. Our findings demonstrate that the average impact of meteorological conditions changed consistently with the variation of ozone pollution levels, indicating that meteorological conditions can exert significant control over the degree of ozone pollution. As the maximum daily 8-hour average (MDA8) ozone concentrations increased from 20 % below to 30 % above the National Ambient Air Quality Standard II, contributions from emissions and precursor transport were enhanced. Concurrently, direct transport within Guangdong province rose from 13.8 % to 22.7 %, underscoring the importance of regional joint prevention and control measures under adverse weather conditions. Regarding biogenic emissions and precursor transport that cannot be directly controlled, we found that their contributions were generally greater in urban areas with high nitrogen oxides (NO x ) levels, primarily due to the stronger atmospheric oxidation capacity facilitating ozone formation. Our results indicate that not only local anthropogenic emissions can be controlled in urban areas, but also the impacts of local biogenic emissions and precursor transport can be potentially regulated through reducing atmospheric oxidation capacity.

Abstract:In the summer of 2017, heavy ozone pollution swamped most of the North China Plain (NCP), with the maximum regional average of daily maximum 8 h ozone concentration (MDA8) reaching almost 120 ppbv. In light of the continuing reduction of anthropogenic emissions in China, the underlying mechanisms for the occurrences of these regional extreme ozone episodes are elucidated from two perspectives: meteorology and biogenic emissions. The significant positive correlation between MDA8 ozone and temperature, which is amplified during heat waves concomitant with stagnant air and no precipitation, supports the crucial role of meteorology in driving high ozone concentrations. We also find that biogenic emissions are enhanced due to factors previously not considered. During the heavy ozone pollution episodes in June 2017, biogenic emissions driven by high vapor pressure deficit (VPD), land cover change and urban landscape yield an extra mean MDA8 ozone of 3.08, 2.79 and 4.74 ppbv, respectively, over the NCP, which together contribute as much to MDA8 ozone as biogenic emissions simulated using the land cover of 2003 and ignoring VPD and urban landscape. In Beijing, the biogenic emission increase due to urban landscape has a comparable effect on MDA8 ozone to the combined effect of high VPD and land cover change between 2003 and 2016. In light of the large effect of urban landscape on biogenic emission and the subsequent ozone formation, the types of trees may be cautiously selected to take into account of the biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emission during the afforestation of cities. This study highlights the vital contributions of heat waves, land cover change and urbanization to the occurrence of extreme ozone episodes, with significant implications for ozone pollution control in a future when heat wave frequency and intensity are projected to increase under global warming.
Coping with the concurrent heatwaves and ozone extremes in China under a warming climate

Abstract:Intensive human activity has brought about unprecedented climate and environmental crises, in which concurrent heatwaves and ozone extremes pose the most serious threats. However, a limited understanding of the comprehensive mechanism hinders our ability to mitigate such compound events, especially in densely populated regions like China. Here, based on field observations and climate-chemistry coupled modelling, we elucidate the linkage between human activities and the climate system in heat-related ozone pollution. In China, we have observed that both the frequency and intensity of heatwaves have almost tripled since the beginning of this century. Moreover, these heatwaves are becoming more common in urban clusters with serious ozone pollution. Persistent heatwaves during the extremely hot and dry summers of 2013 and 2022 accelerated photochemical ozone production by boosting anthropogenic and biogenic emissions, and aggravated ozone accumulation by suppressing dry deposition due to water-stressed vegetation, leading to a more than 30% increase in ozone pollution in China's urban areas. The sensitivity of ozone to heat is demonstrated to be substantially modulated by anthropogenic emissions, and China's clean air policy may have altered the relationship between ozone and temperature. Climate model projections further highlight that the high-emission climate-socioeconomic scenario tends to intensify the concurrent heat and ozone extremes in the next century. Our results underscore that the implementation of a strict emission strategy will significantly reduce the co-occurrence of heatwaves and ozone extremes, achieving climate and environmental co-benefits.
Integrated Studies of a Regional Ozone Pollution Synthetically Affected by Subtropical High and Typhoon System in the Yangtze River Delta Region, China

Abstract:Severe high ozone (O3) episodes usually have close relations to synoptic systems. A regional continuous O3 pollution episode was detected over the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region in China during 7–12 August 2013, in which the O3 concentrations in more than half of the cities exceeded the national air quality standard. The maximum hourly concentration of O3 reached 167.1 ppb. By means of the observational analysis and the numerical simulation, the characteristics and the essential impact factors of the typical regional O3 pollution are comprehensively investigated. The observational analysis shows that the atmospheric subsidence dominated by the western Pacific subtropical high plays a crucial role in the formation of high-level O3. The favorable weather conditions, such as extremely high temperature, low relative humidity and weak wind speed, caused by the abnormally strong subtropical high are responsible for the trapping and the chemical production of O3 in the boundary layer. In addition, when the YRD cities are at the front of Typhoon Utor, the periphery circulation of typhoon system can enhance the downward airflows and cause worse air quality. However, when the typhoon system weakens the subtropical high, the prevailing southeasterly surface wind leads to the mitigation of the O3 pollution. The integrated process rate (IPR) analysis incorporated in the Community Multi-scale Air Quality (CMAQ) model is applied to further illustrate the combined influence of subtropical high and typhoon system in this O3 episode. The results show that the vertical diffusion (VDIF) and the gas-phase chemistry (CHEM) are two major contributors to O3 formation. During the episode, the contributions of VDIF and CHEM to O3 maintain the high values over the YRD region. On 10–12 August, the cities close to the sea are apparently affected by the typhoon system, with the contribution of VDIF increasing to 28.45 ppb h−1 in Shanghai and 19.76 ppb h−1 in Hangzhou. In contrast, the cities far away from the sea can hardly be affected by the periphery circulation of typhoon system. When the typhoon system significantly weakens the subtropical high, the contribution values of all individual processes decrease to a low level in all YRD cities. These results provide an insight for the O3 pollution synthetically impacted by the western Pacific subtropical high and the tropical cyclone system.

Abstract:Ozone (O 3 ) is a significant air pollutant in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region, with severe pollution events primarily associated with the Western Pacific Subtropical High (WPSH) and typhoon periphery synoptic weather patterns. To investigate the continuity and differences in O 3 pollution processes influenced by these patterns, we analyze a severe O 3 pollution event in Zhuhai from September 10 to 13, 2022. The study collects vertical profiles of O 3 from the differential absorption O 3 lidar and wind fields observed by the Doppler wind profile lidar. We utilize ground-level monitoring data from national ambient air quality monitoring network and meteorological stations to analyze diurnal variations of air pollutant concentrations and ground-level meteorological conditions. The study reveals that both the WPSH and the typhoon periphery create favorable meteorological conditions for severe O 3 pollution events. The highest temperatures during the WPSH and typhoon periphery stages are 32.1 °C and 37.5 °C, respectively. During the WPSH control stage, the combined effects of the inversion layer and light static wind hinder O 3 dispersion. The ground-level O 3 concentration reaches a maximum of 106 ppb. Then the typhoon periphery control stage, the ground-level O 3 peak increases to 170 ppb, showing a 60% increase compared to the WPSH stage. O 3 Horizontal and vertical transport processes play a crucial role in the O 3 episode during this stage. The northerly winds predominantly transport pollutants from upstream urban clusters to the local area, and intense downdrafts facilitate the downward transport of O 3 from the residual layer. The study investigates the mechanisms of three-dimensional O 3 transport within the boundary layer influenced by the WPSH and typhoon periphery in the PRD region. The results contribute valuable insights to pollution events in the PRD region under typical synoptic weather patterns.

Abstract:Abstract. Surface ozone is a major pollutant in eastern China, especially during the summer season. The formation of surface ozone pollution highly depends on meteorological conditions largely controlled by regional circulation patterns which can modulate ozone concentrations by influencing the emission of the precursors, the chemical production rates, and regional transport. Here we show that summertime ozone pollution over eastern China is distinctly modulated by the variability of the western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH), a major synoptic system that controls the summertime weather conditions of East Asia. Composite and regression analyses indicate that a positive WPSH anomaly is associated with higher than normal surface ozone concentration over northern China but lower ozone over southern China. Stronger than normal WPSH leads to higher temperatures, stronger solar radiation at the land surface, lower relative humidity, and less precipitation in northern China, favoring the production and accumulation of surface ozone. In contrast, all meteorological variables show reverse changes in southern China under a stronger WPSH. GEOS-Chem simulations reasonably reproduce the observed ozone changes associated with the WPSH and support the statistical analyses. We further conduct a budget diagnosis to quantify the detailed contributions of chemistry, transport, mixing, and convection processes. The result shows that chemistry plays a decisive role in leading the ozone changes among these processes. Results show that the changes in ozone are primarily attributed to chemical processes. Moreover, the natural emission of precursors from biogenic and soil sources, a major component influencing the chemical production, accounts for ∼ 30 % of the total surface ozone changes.

Abstract:As one of the largest dust source regions, China suffers from frequent dust storms in spring. During the super dust storm in March 2021, a rapid increase in nocturnal surface ozone concentration was observed along with elevated dust loading. Ground-based and satellite observations as well as reanalysis data of air quality and meteorology are integrated to shed light on the ozone anomaly. It is indicated that cold fronts and cyclones are conducive to both dust emissions and the downwards transport of stratospheric air, leading to simultaneously soaring ozone and particle concentrations near the surface. Statistically, in the past few years, under the influence of specific synoptic weather accompanied with Stratosphere-Troposphere Exchange (STE), dust was frequently uplifted to 8–12 km and the low-tropospheric ozone was elevated by approximately 6 ppb in northern China during spring dust storms. This work reveals strong ozone intrusions associated with dust storms, which have great impacts on atmospheric chemistry and regional climate.
