Abstract:A series of commercial silica-supported polyoxometalate ionic liquids ([Cnmim]3PMo12O40) with different substitutes in the imidazole ring were prepared via a facile ball milling method and employed as catalysts in the oxidative desulfurization of organosulfur compounds. The experimental results demonstrated that the active polyoxometalate center was successfully immobilized with a highly uniform dispersion on the silica. Without any organic solvent as the extractant, sulfur removal with the sample C16PMo/SiO2-BM reached 99.5% in 30 min under the optimal condition, which was ascribed to the high specific surface area and lipophilicity. In addition, the active site was verified by a free radical trapping experiment and an ESR spin capture experiment. In addition, the oxidative product was confirmed by GC-MS analysis.

Abstract:Generally, the high specific surface area of catalysts with a highly uniform dispersion of active centers is beneficial for the improvement of catalytic performance in a reaction. Herein, a kind of mesoporous molybdenum-silica hybrid materials was successfully prepared via one-pot calcination method using molybdenum-based poly (ionic liquids) as template and active metal sources, which was characterized in detail and evaluated in the oxidative desulfurization of organosulfur in fuel. The experimental results indicated that the prepared samples possessed not only high specific surface area, but also a highly uniform dispersion of active sites in the sample. Under mild operating condition, the typical sample (PILMo/Si-400) with a BET area of 597.6 m 2 /g can achieve the complete desulfurization in 30 min without any additional organic extractant. After recycling for seven times, the desulfurization for PILMo/Si-400 can still reach 100 %. In addition, the possible mechanism for oxidative desulfurization was discussed according to the radical trapping experiments.

Abstract:With the rapid growth in fuel demand, deep desulfurization of fuel oil is vitally necessary for the sake of health and environmental protection. In this work, a kind of magnetic ionic liquid supported silica is prepared by a facile ball milling method, and applied in the aerobic oxidative desulfurization of organosulfurs in fuel. The experimental results indicated that ball milling procedure can increase the specific surface area of samples, which is beneficial to oxidative desulfurization process. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the prepared materials can have an entire removal of aromatic sulfur compounds as well as a good recycling ability. Moreover, the introduction of Fe3O4 did not decline the desulfurization performance, but help the catalyst to be easily separated after reaction.

Abstract:In this work, novel Lewis acidic ionic liquids [ODBU]Cl/nZnCl(2) (n = 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) with alkylated 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) cation and ZnCl2-based complex anion have been developed and utilized in extraction combined with oxidative desulfurization (ECODS) of both model oil and diesel fuel with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2, 30 wt%) as an oxidant. It was observed that the ECODS performance could be effectively optimized by the change of ZnCl2 proportion. Some important reaction parameters such as reaction temperature, molar ratio of O/S, mass ratio of IL/oil and sulfide species were systematically investigated. Furthermore, the ILs could be reused for at least six cycles without noticeable changes in desulfurization performance as well as its chemical structure, thus revealing its good reusability. Finally, [ODBU] Cl/3ZnCl(2) was employed in the ECODS of a hydrogenated diesel, the S-content could be reduced from 559.7 ppm to 4.8 ppm with 99.2% sulfur removal via a one-step process under mild conditions.

Abstract:Interfacial properties of catalysts and distribution of active sites affect the catalytic oxidative desulfurization activity, which has become the research focus in recent years. Towards desulfurization in fuel, a kind of amphiphilic and polyoxometalate poly(ionic liquids) was prepared by the cross-linking copolymerization and ion exchange reaction. The resulting samples characterized in detail were employed in the oxidation of refractory aromatic sulfur-containing compounds. With H 2 O 2 as the oxidant, the sample p-C 2 VIM-DVB-2-PMo exhibited enhanced desulfurization performance and good thermal stability, meeting the demand of deep desulfurization. Besides, no significant decrease on sulfur removal was observed after recycling for 8 times. Moreover, density functional theory calculations were employed to investigate the adsorption strength and interaction nature between cation and typical sulfide.

Abstract:Polymeric 1-vinyl-3-ethylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquids modified microspheres of silica gel were prepared by free radical polymerization in toluene. Characterization with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and 13C, 29Si magic angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) demonstrated that 1-vinyl-3-ethylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate had successfully loaded on the surface of silica gel and formed a stable polymer coating. Furthermore, to detect the potential desulfurization performance, a series of experiments of model fuel desulfurization with polymeric ionic liquid modified silica gel had been carried out. The desulfurization efficiency of modified silica gel was investigated by removing 2-methylthiophene, benzothiophene, and dibenzothiophene from model fuel (n-heptane/2-methylthiophene, benzothiophene, and dibenzothiophene) under tested conditions. It was shown that the modified silica gel exhibited remarkable desulfurization capacity for aromatic S-containing compounds and the sulfur removal selectivity followed the order of 2-methylthiophene < benzothiophene < dibenzothiophene due to the different density aromatic π-electrons.

Abstract:Mesoporous ZrO2 with remarkable pore properties and high crystallinity has demonstrated excellent performance in heterogeneous catalyst fields. Current synthesis of mesoporous ZrO2 is still restricted to the solvent induced self-assembly strategy. Here, a serial of mesoporous zirconia-supported tungsten oxide composites have been synthesized by a polymer-oriented solvent-free self-assembly method. Compared with quaternary ammonium salts cationic surfactant and Pluronic block copolymer, cheap and widely available polyethyleneimine (PEI) polymer has been proved to be a more effective porogen in the solvent-free self-assembly system, which can generate uniform-sized ZrO2 nanoparticles and maintain their porous structure after high temperature calcination. PEI-oriented mesoporous zirconia-supported tungsten oxide composite provides connected channels for reactant and facilitates the homogeneous distribution of tungsten oxide species on mesoporous ZrO2 matrix, which demonstrates excellent catalytic efficiency and stability in oxidative desulfurization (ODS) process. 500 ppm of dibenzothiophene (DBT) can be totally removed within 2 h at 40 °C.

Abstract:This work describes a novel approach for linking metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to polyoxometalates (POMs) for use as effective heterogeneous catalysts in the oxidative desulfurization of fuel oil. A POM-based MOF was synthesized in situ with a carboxyl-functionalized ionic liquid as a bridge to combine the POM and MOF. The resulting [mim(CH2)3COO]3 was characterized by XRD, N2 adsorption-desorption, FT-IR, SEM and TGA. The results indicated that the heteropolyanion-based ionic liquid [mim(CH2)3COOH]3PW was successfully dispersed within the cages of UiO-66. The catalyst [mim(CH2)3COO]3, which had a high content of the active component and large specific surface area, exhibited remarkable catalytic performance in oxidative desulfurization (100% DBT removal in 60 min). Importantly, a synergistic catalytic mechanism involving W=O and the Lewis acid, in which the Lewis acid promoted the decomposition of H2O2 and the generation of peroxotungstate (W(O2)n), was proposed to explain the high oxidative desulfurization catalytic efficiency of [mim(CH2)3COO]3

Abstract:A series of polymer ionic liquid (PIL)-based polyoxometalate (POM) salt is and synthesized through self-assembly method. Whereafter, supported catalysts are prepared by adding graphene oxide during the self-assembly process. The presence of polymer ionic liquid of hybrid not only can increase the lipophilicity via abundant carbon chains, but also immobilized the hybrid on the surface of GO through specific π-π complexation, improving the stability during desulfurization process. Two group materials are characterized and used as catalysts for the removal sulfides in oil. By contrast, the supported catalyst has better performance. Then, the response surface methodology is used to analyze the influence of reaction conditions on removal thiophene and explore the optimum conditions. And the maximum sulfur removal efficiency of T, BT and DBT can achieve to 98.47, 99.98 and 99.28 %, respectively. Besides, the catalyst can be easily recovered and reused without significant decrease in activity after ten cycles.

Abstract:In order to obtain the clean fuel, two types of inorganic–organic hybrid catalysts with core–shell structures have been prepared as efficient and reusable catalysts for oxidative desulfurization, in which ionic liquids (1-vinylimidazole and 4-vinylpyridine) were grafted and polymerized on the surface of silicon through free radical polymerization and polyoxometalates (H3PMo6W6O40, attributed as PMoW) was functionalized on the surface of silicon. The as-prepared catalysts were characterized by FT-IR, UV–Vis, N2 adsorption–desorption, SEM and TEM. It could be proved that these two types of catalysts show high sulfur removal efficiency over 98% in the model fuel with 2000 ppm of DBT under mild reaction condition. The effective catalytic abilities of synthesized catalysts are mainly attributed to the hierarchical functional core–shell structures. The successful preparation of the PILs-polyoxometalates based catalysts with high catalytic activities could provide the demonstration of the application of polymer in oxidative desulfurization.

Abstract:A study was carried out to develop a more efficient catalytic system for desulfurization of sulfur-containing model oil. Quaternary ammonium salt with short carbon chain combining with H2O2 and IL for catalytic oxidation-extraction desulfurization from model oil was described. This process is more superior to the mere solvent extraction with ionic liquid. The deep desulfurization system containing could be recycled four times with an inconspicuous decrease in activity, which will be developed into a promising, green process of deep desulfurization. Abstract:Reducing the level of sulfur content in fuel oils has long been desired for environmental reasons. Polyoxometalates (POMs) can act as catalysts to remove sulfur‐containing heterocyclic compounds by the process of oxidative desulfurization under mild conditions. However, one key obstacle to the development of POM‐based catalysts is the poor solubility of POMs in the overall nonpolar environment. We report a novel strategy for the introduction of catalytically active POMs into nonpolar reaction systems by encapsulating the inorganic catalyst within the pores of a metal–organic framework structure in which the organic ligands act as hydrophobic groups. The nanocrystalline catalysts, obtained rapidly and conveniently by both solution and mechanochemical synthesis, showed remarkable activities in catalytic oxidative desulfurization reactions in both a model diesel environment and in real diesel wherein dibenzothiophene was converted rapidly and quantitatively into dibenzothiophene sulfone.

Abstract:A simple, one-step synthetic route to prepare ordered mesoporous silica monoliths with controllable quantities of metal oxide nanocrystals in their channels is presented. The method is based on the assisted assembly effect for mesostructure-directing of the metal complexes formed by the interaction of metal ions with the -O- groups of copolymers. Highly ordered hexagonal silica monoliths, loaded with various metal oxide nanocrystals, including those of Cr2O3, MnO, Fe2O3, Co3O4, NiO, CuO, ZnO, CdO, SnO2, and In2O3, can be obtained by this one-step pathway. In the NiO/SiO2 nanocomposite, nickel oxide nanorods with face-centered cubic lattices are formed at low doping ratios, and they can be transformed into nanowires by increasing the quantities of the precursors. In the Fe2O3/SiO2 nanocomposites, a one-dimensional assembly of iron oxide nanoparticles is observed. In the In2O3/SiO2 nanocomposites, single crystal nanowires with high aspect ratios are obtained. For the other metal oxide nanocomposites, including Cr2O3, MnO, Co3O4, CuO, ZnO, CdO, and SnO, only crystalline nanorods are obtained. N-2 sorption results of the metal oxide/SiO2 mesostructured nanocomposites reveal that nanocrystals inside the pores do not severely decrease the pore volume or the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of the mesoporous silica host. The band-gaps of SnO2 and In2O3 nanocrystals, calculated from UV-vis spectra, are much larger than the corresponding bulk materials, implying the quantum confinement effect in the small particles. Co3O4/SiO2 mesostructured nanocomposites catalyze the complete combustion of CH4. These studies provide a new and simple method for templating synthesis of metal oxide nanostructures.
Liquid Polyoxometalate-Based Catalysts Lead to Highly Efficient Desulfurization of Waste Water

Abstract:A general, efficient method was developed to selective oxidation of S2- in waste water into sulfur. Sulfur was oxidized from dissolved H2S using liquid polyoxometalate-based catalysts (LPOMCs). Four room temperature LPOMCs were fabricated from heteropolyanion (SiMo12O404-, S2W18O624-, S2Mo18O624-) and cheap organic cations (C33H32N3+, C32H68N+). The desulfurization rate of (C32H68N)(4 alpha)-S2Mo18O62 in acetonitrilewater (v:v = 1:1) medium was up to 98.4% after 90 min, 77.3 wt% of LPOMC was recovered and 90.3% desulfurization rate was obtained for the 6th reused of regeneration (C33H32N3)(4 alpha)-SiMo12O40. The desulfurization process can easily be accessed by stirring and lighting while the recycled LPOMC was handled by H2O2 regeneration step. (C) 2018 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:The polyoxometalate (POM) cluster Na7 H2 LaW10 O36 ⋅32 H2 O (denoted LaW10 ) is immobilized onto dihydroimidazolium-based ionic-liquid (IL)-modified mesoporous silica, resulting in the formation of a new catalyst: LaW10 /IL-SiO2 . Compared with other reported extractive catalytic oxidative desulfurization (ECODS) systems, LaW10 /IL-SiO2 has the following advantages: 1) the heterogeneous catalyst LaW10 /IL-SiO2 achieves deep desulfurization of dibenzothiophene (DBT), benzothiophene (BT), and 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT) in 25, 30, and 25 min, respectively, under mild conditions; 2) deep desulfurization of DBT follows zero-order reaction kinetics; 3) there is no need to add ionic liquid each time the catalyst is reused; 4) the catalyst can be separated easily by filtration and reused at least ten times without a decrease in catalytic efficiency. As such, LaW10 /IL-SiO2 shows great potential for practical applications.

Abstract:SO x emission from fossil fuel combustion is an important reason for environmental pollution. Achieving deep removal of sulfur-containing compounds from the fuel is essential. Herein, by combining phosphotungstic acid (HPW) with ionic liquids (ILs) and incorporating carbon quantum dots (CQDs), a series of catalysts (CQD/C 18 PWIL-x) for oxidative desulfurization (ODS) are prepared. Experimental results reveal that the modification of ILs could facilitate full contact between the active site and the organic phase, and improve mass transfer in the oxidative desulfurization process. Moreover, the incorporation of CQDs can promote the utilization of hydrogen peroxide. The synergistic action of multiple components leads to better activation of hydrogen peroxide. Therefore, the CQDs/C 18 PWIL-1 exhibits excellent desulfurization efficiency under ambient conditions, in which dibenzothiophene was completely removed within 30 min. Meanwhile, as heterogeneous catalyst, CQDs/C 18 PWIL-1 shows excellent cycling stability. The direct incorporation of CQDs significantly improves the catalytic activity and provides a new inspiration for the application of CQDs to ODS processes.
