Abstract:The objective is to investigate coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated neurological and psychiatric effects and explore possible pathogenic mechanisms. This study included 77 patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 in Wuhan, China. Neurological manifestations were evaluated by well-trained neurologists, psychologists, psychiatric presentations and biochemical changes were evaluated using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, and electronic medical records. Eighteen (23.4%) patients presented with neurological symptoms. Patients with neurological presentations had higher urea nitrogen, cystatin C, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels and lower basophil counts. Among them, patients with muscle involvement had higher urea nitrogen and cystatin C levels but lower basophil counts. In addition, patients with psychiatric presentations were older and had higher interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-10 levels and higher alkaline phosphatase, R-glutamate transferase, and urea nitrogen levels. Moreover, patients with anxiety had higher IL-6 and IL-10 levels than those without, and patients with moderate depression had higher CD8 + T cell counts and lower CD4 + /CD8 + ratios than other patients. This study indicates that the central nervous system may be influenced in patients with COVID-19, and the pathological mechanisms may be related to direct virus invasion of the central nervous system, infection-mediated overreaction of the immune system, and aberrant serum pro-inflammatory factors. In addition, basophils and cystatin C may also play important roles during these pathological processes. Our findings suggest that neurological and psychiatric presentations should be evaluated and managed in patients with COVID-19. Further studies are needed to investigate the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract:COVID-19 infections have well described systemic manifestations, especially respiratory problems. There are currently no specific treatments or vaccines against the current strain. With higher case numbers, a range of neurological symptoms are becoming apparent. The mechanisms responsible for these are not well defined, other than those related to hypoxia and microthrombi. We speculate that sustained systemic immune activation seen with SARS-CoV-2 may also cause secondary autoimmune activation in the CNS. Patients with chronic neurological diseases may be at higher risk because of chronic secondary respiratory disease and potentially poor nutritional status. Here, we review the impact of COVID-19 on people with chronic neurological diseases and potential mechanisms. We believe special attention to protecting people with neurodegenerative disease is warranted. We are concerned about a possible delayed pandemic in the form of an increased burden of neurodegenerative disease after acceleration of pathology by systemic COVID-19 infections.

Abstract:Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), induced a global pandemic with a diverse array of clinical manifestations. While the acute phase of the pandemic may be waning, the intricacies of COVID-19's impact on neurological health remain a crucial area of investigation. Early recognition of the spectrum of COVID-19 symptoms, ranging from mild fever and cough to life-threatening respiratory distress and multi-organ failure, underscored the significance of neurological complications, including anosmia, seizures, stroke, disorientation, encephalopathy, and paralysis. Notably, patients requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission due to neurological challenges or due to them exhibiting neurological abnormalities in the ICU have shown increased mortality rates. COVID-19 can lead to a range of neurological complications such as anosmia, stroke, paralysis, cranial nerve deficits, encephalopathy, delirium, meningitis, seizures, etc., in affected patients. This review elucidates the burgeoning landscape of neurological sequelae associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection and explores the underlying neurobiological mechanisms driving these diverse manifestations. A meticulous examination of potential neuroinvasion routes by SARS-CoV-2 underscores the intricate interplay between the virus and the nervous system. Moreover, we dissect the diverse neurological manifestations emphasizing the necessity of a multifaceted approach to understanding the disease's neurological footprint. In addition to elucidating the pathophysiological underpinnings, this review surveys current therapeutic modalities and delineates prospective avenues for neuro-COVID research. By integrating epidemiological, clinical, and diagnostic parameters, we endeavor to foster a comprehensive analysis of the nexus between COVID-19 and neurological health, thereby laying the groundwork for targeted therapeutic interventions and long-term management strategies.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 revealed a huge number of problems as well as discoveries in medicine, notably, regarding the effects of the virus on the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS). This paper is a narrative review that takes a deep dive into the complex interactions between COVID-19 and the NS. Therefore, this paper explains the broad range of neurological manifestations and neurodegenerative diseases caused by the virus. It carefully considers the routes through which SARS-CoV-2 reaches the NS, including the olfactory system and of course, the hematogenous route, which are also covered when discussing the virus's direct and indirect mechanisms of neuropathogenesis. Besides neurological pathologies such as stroke, encephalitis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis, the focus area is also given to the challenges of making diagnosis, treatment, and management of these conditions during the pandemic. The review also examines the strategic and interventional approaches utilized to prevent these disorders, as well as the ACE2 receptors implicated in the mediation of neurological effects caused by COVID-19. This detailed overview, which combines research outputs with case data, is directed at tackling this pandemic challenge, with a view toward better patient care and outcomes in the future.

Abstract:A pandemic due to novel coronavirus arose in mid-December 2019 in Wuhan, China, and in 3 months’ time swept the world. The disease has been referred to as COVID-19, and the causative agent has been labelled SARS-CoV-2 due to its genetic similarities to the virus (SARS-CoV-1) responsible for the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic nearly 20 years earlier. The spike proteins of both viruses dictate tissue tropism using the angiotensin-converting enzyme type 2 (ACE-2) receptor to bind to cells. The ACE-2 receptor can be found in nervous system tissue and endothelial cells among the tissues of many other organs.Neurological complications have been observed with COVID-19. Myalgia and headache are relatively common, but serious neurological disease appears to be rare. No part of the neuraxis is spared. The neurological disorders occurring with COVID-19 may have many pathophysiological underpinnings. Some appear to be the consequence of direct viral invasion of the nervous system tissue, others arise as a postviral autoimmune process, and still others are the result of metabolic and systemic complications due to the associated critical illness. This review addresses the preliminary observations regarding the neurological disorders reported with COVID-19 to date and describes some of the disorders that are anticipated from prior experience with similar coronaviruses.

Abstract:The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been declared a pandemic. Global research updates confirm that the infected patients manifest a range of clinical symptoms and sometimes remain entirely asymptomatic, posing a greater threat to the people coming in contact. Despite several case reports coming up every day, our knowledge about the neurotropic mechanism of the SARS-CoV-2, immunological responses, and the mode of disease progression and mechanism of cross-talk between the central nervous system (CNS), heart, lungs, and other major organs is not complete. Report of anosmia, ataxia, dysgeusia, and altered psychological status of the infected COVID-19 patients offers some clue to the possible route of viral entry and multiplication. In this review, we have critically assessed the involvement of CNS dysregulation in COVID-19 patients. The probable mechanism of immunological responses, the impairment of the coagulation pathway, the onset of cytokine storm, its interplay with the HPA axis, and hypoxia are discussed in detail here. Based on the latest research findings and some case reports of hospitalized COVID-19 patients, it is evident that the CNS involvement in disease progression is alarming. Accurate and timely detection of viral load in CNS is necessary to allow prompt and effective treatment modalities.

Abstract:As the current understanding of COVID-19 continues to evolve, a synthesis of the literature on the neurological impact of this novel virus may help inform clinical management and highlight potentially important avenues of investigation. Additionally, understanding the potential mechanisms of neurologic injury may guide efforts to better detect and ameliorate these complications. In this review, we synthesize a range of clinical observations and initial case series describing potential neurologic manifestations of COVID-19 and place these observations in the context of coronavirus neuro-pathophysiology as it may relate to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Reported nervous system manifestations range from anosmia and ageusia, to cerebral hemorrhage and infarction. While the volume of COVID-19-related case studies continues to grow, previous work examining related viruses suggests potential mechanisms through which the novel coronavirus may impact the CNS and result in neurological complications. Namely, animal studies examining the SARS-CoV have implicated the angiotensin-converting-enzyme-2 receptor as a mediator of coronavirus-related neuronal damage and have shown that SARS-CoV can infect cerebrovascular endothelium and brain parenchyma, the latter predominantly in the medial temporal lobe, resulting in apoptosis and necrosis. Human postmortem brain studies indicate that human coronavirus variants and SARS-CoV can infect neurons and glia, implying SARS-CoV-2 may have similar neurovirulence. Additionally, studies have demonstrated an increase in cytokine serum levels as a result of SARS-CoV infection, consistent with the notion that cytokine overproduction and toxicity may be a relevant potential mechanism of neurologic injury, paralleling a known pathway of pulmonary injury. We also discuss evidence that suggests that SARS-CoV-2 may be a vasculotropic and neurotropic virus. Early reports suggest COVID-19 may be associated with severe neurologic complications, and several plausible mechanisms exist to account for these observations. A heightened awareness of the potential for neurologic involvement and further investigation into the relevant pathophysiology will be necessary to understand and ultimately mitigate SARS-CoV-2-associated neurologic injury.

Abstract:The development of long-term symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) more than four weeks after primary infection, termed "long COVID" or post-acute sequela of COVID-19 (PASC), can implicate persistent neurological complications in up to one third of patients and present as fatigue, "brain fog", headaches, cognitive impairment, dysautonomia, neuropsychiatric symptoms, anosmia, hypogeusia, and peripheral neuropathy. Pathogenic mechanisms of these symptoms of long COVID remain largely unclear; however, several hypotheses implicate both nervous system and systemic pathogenic mechanisms such as SARS-CoV2 viral persistence and neuroinvasion, abnormal immunological response, autoimmunity, coagulopathies, and endotheliopathy. Outside of the CNS, SARS-CoV-2 can invade the support and stem cells of the olfactory epithelium leading to persistent alterations to olfactory function. SARS-CoV-2 infection may induce abnormalities in innate and adaptive immunity including monocyte expansion, T-cell exhaustion, and prolonged cytokine release, which may cause neuroinflammatory responses and microglia activation, white matter abnormalities, and microvascular changes. Additionally, microvascular clot formation can occlude capillaries and endotheliopathy, due to SARS-CoV-2 protease activity and complement activation, can contribute to hypoxic neuronal injury and blood–brain barrier dysfunction, respectively. Current therapeutics target pathological mechanisms by employing antivirals, decreasing inflammation, and promoting olfactory epithelium regeneration. Thus, from laboratory evidence and clinical trials in the literature, we sought to synthesize the pathophysiological pathways underlying neurological symptoms of long COVID and potential therapeutics.

Abstract:Worldwide, over 694 million people have been infected with SARS-CoV-2, with an estimated 55-60% of those infected developing COVID-19. Since the beginning of the pandemic in December 2019, different variants of concern have appeared and continue to occur. With the emergence of different variants, an increasing rate of vaccination and previous infections, the acute neurological symptomatology of COVID-19 changed. Moreover, 10-45% of individuals with a history of SARS-CoV-2 infection experience symptoms even 3 months after disease onset, a condition that has been defined as 'post-COVID-19' by the World Health Organization and that occurs independently of the virus variant. The pathomechanisms of COVID-19-related neurological complaints have become clearer during the past 3 years. To date, there is no overt - that is, truly convincing - evidence for SARS-CoV-2 particles in the brain. In this Review, we put special emphasis on discussing the methodological difficulties of viral detection in CNS tissue and discuss immune-based (systemic and central) effects contributing to COVID-19-related CNS affection. We sequentially review the reported changes to CNS cells in COVID-19, starting with the blood-brain barrier and blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier - as systemic factors from the periphery appear to primarily influence barriers and conduits - before we describe changes in brain parenchymal cells, including microglia, astrocytes, neurons and oligodendrocytes as well as cerebral lymphocytes. These findings are critical to understanding CNS affection in acute COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 in order to translate these findings into treatment options, which are still very limited.

Abstract:SUMMARY SARS-CoV-2 can not only cause respiratory symptoms but also lead to neurological complications. Research has shown that more than 30% of SARS-CoV-2 patients present neurologic symptoms during COVID-19 (A. Pezzini and A. Padovani, Nat Rev Neurol 16:636–644, 2020, https://doi.org/10.1038/s41582-020-0398-3 ). Increasing evidence suggests that SARS-CoV-2 can invade both the central nervous system (CNS) (M.S. Xydakis, M.W. Albers, E.H. Holbrook, et al. Lancet Neurol 20: 753–761, 2021 https://doi.org/10.1016/S1474-4422(21)00182-4 ) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS) (M.N. Soares, M. Eggelbusch, E. Naddaf, et al. J Cachexia Sarcopenia Muscle 13:11–22, 2022, https://doi.org/10.1002/jcsm.12896 ), resulting in a variety of neurological disorders. This review summarized the CNS complications caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection, including encephalopathy, neurodegenerative diseases, and delirium. Additionally, some PNS disorders such as skeletal muscle damage and inflammation, anosmia, smell or taste impairment, myasthenia gravis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, ICU-acquired weakness, and post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 were described. Furthermore, the mechanisms underlying SARS-CoV-2-induced neurological disorders were also discussed, including entering the brain through retrograde neuronal or hematogenous routes, disrupting the normal function of the CNS through cytokine storms, inducing cerebral ischemia or hypoxia, thus leading to neurological complications. Moreover, an overview of long-COVID-19 symptoms is provided, along with some recommendations for care and therapeutic approaches of COVID-19 patients experiencing neurological complications.

Abstract:<p>Viral infections have detrimental impacts on neurological functions, and even to cause severe neurological damage. Very recently, coronaviruses (CoV), especially severe acute respiratory syndrome CoV 2 (SARS-CoV-2), exhibit neurotropic properties and may also cause neurological diseases. It is reported that CoV can be found in the brain or cerebrospinal fluid. The pathobiology of these neuroinvasive viruses is still incompletely known, and it is therefore important to explore the impact of CoV infections on the nervous system. Here, we review the research into neurological complications in CoV infections and the possible mechanisms of damage to the nervous system.</p>
A Disease Hidden in Plain Sight: Pathways and Mechanisms of Neurological Complications of Post-acute Sequelae of COVID-19 (NC-PASC)

Abstract:The global impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) marked by numerous pandemic peaks is attributed to its high variability and infectious nature, transforming it into a persistent global public health concern. With hundreds of millions of cases reported globally, the illness is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Despite its initial classification as an acute respiratory illness, recent evidence indicates that lingering effects on various bodily systems, such as cardiovascular, pulmonary, nervous, gastrointestinal (GI), and musculoskeletal, may endure well beyond the acute phase. These persistent manifestations following COVID-19, commonly known as long COVID, have the potential to affect individuals across the entire range of illness severity, with a tendency to be more prevalent in mild to moderate cases. At present, there are no established criteria for diagnosing long COVID. Nonetheless, it is conceptualized as a multi-organ disorder encompassing a diverse array of clinical manifestations. The most common, persistent, and debilitating symptoms of long COVID may be neurological, known as neurological complications of post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (NC-PASC). More than one-third of individuals with a prior SARS-CoV-2 infection show involvement of both the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS), as evidenced by an approximately threefold higher incidence of neurological symptoms in observational studies. The persistent neurological symptoms of long COVID encompass fatigue, headache, cognitive decline, "brain fog", dysautonomia, neuropsychiatric issues, loss of smell (anosmia), loss of taste (ageusia), and peripheral nerve problems (peripheral neuropathy). Reported pathogenic mechanisms encompass viral persistence and neuro-invasion by SARS-CoV-2, neuroinflammation, autoimmunity, coagulopathy, and endotheliopathy. Raising awareness of potential complications is crucial for preventing and alleviating the long-term effects of long COVID and enhancing the prognosis for affected patients. This review explores the hypothetical pathophysiological mechanisms and pathways of NC-PASC with a sole aim to increase awareness about this crippling disease.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic is well on its way to reaching endemic status across the globe. While the medical community's understanding of the respiratory complications induced by COVID-19 is improving, there is still much to be learned about the neurological manifestations associated with COVID-19 infection. This review aimed to compile relevant, available evidence of COVID-19-induced neurological complications and to provide information for each complication regarding symptomology, progression patterns, demographic risk factors, treatment, and causative mechanism of action when available. Data for this review was collected using a confined search on PubMed using the keywords ["COVID-19" OR "SARS-CoV-2"] AND ["neurological complications" OR "olfactory symptoms" OR "gustatory symptoms" OR "myalgia" OR "headache" OR "dizziness" OR "stroke" OR "seizures" OR "meningoencephalitis" OR "cerebellar ataxia" OR "acute myelitis" OR "Guillain Barré Syndrome" OR "Miller Fisher Syndrome" OR "Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome"] between 2019 and 2023. A wide range of neurological manifestations impact a significant percentage of COVID-19 patients, and a deeper understanding of these manifestations is necessary to ensure adequate management. The most common neurological complications identified consist of olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions, myalgia, headache, and dizziness, while the most severe complications include stroke, seizures, meningoencephalitis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, Miller Fisher syndrome, acute myelitis, and posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome. While this review effectively provides a roadmap of the neurological risks posed to COVID-19 patients, further research is needed to clarify the precise incidence of these complications and to elucidate the mechanisms responsible for their manifestation.

Abstract:A novel caused the outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread to Wuhan city of China and has become a global health issue and severe concern of the international community. Elderly patients with comorbidities, such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, heart and lung disease, are more prone to COVID-19 Infection. COVID-19 and neurological disorders are two conditions with a well-documented association recently. Studies have shown that Infection with COVID-19 can alter the clinical spectrum of manifested neurological disorders and plays a vital role as long-term consequences in the development of diseases in the future. The SARS-CoV-2 virus reaches the brain either by an olfactory or by a hematogenous route pathway. Angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE-2) receptors, present in cerebral vessel endothelial cells of a cerebral vessel, are a potential viral entry point. Several cases of neurological disease have been identified recently, including Alzheimer's disease, Multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson's disease in COVID-19 patients, and a post-infectious immune-mediated inflammatory pathway has been held responsible for this. In this study, we try to explore the effect of COVID-19 on central nervous system damage and treatment of these manifestations. COVID-19 pandemic spreads to different parts of the world, the spectrum of neurological complications can expand further.

In the present review, we conferred evidence of neurological complications in COVID-19 patients and shed light on the SARS-CoV-2 infection routes including the hematogenous, direct/neuronal, lymphatic tissue or cerebrospinal fluid, or infiltration through infected immune cells, while the underlying mechanism of SARS-CoV-2 invasion to the central nervous system (CNS) was also discussed. In an up-to-date manner, we further reviewed the impact of COVID-19 in developing diverse neurologic manifestations associated with CNS, peripheral nervous system (PNS), skeletal muscle, and also pre-existing neurological diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, and myasthenia gravis. Furthermore, we discussed the involvement of key factors including age, sex, comorbidity, and disease severity in exacerbating the neurologic manifestations in COVID-19 patients. An outlook of present therapeutic strategies and state of existing challenges in COVID-19 management was also accessed. Conclusively, the present report provides a comprehensive review of COVID-19-related neurological complications and emphasizes the need for their early clinical management in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:Background: Several investigations were carried out during the pandemic, demonstrating a number of neurological symptoms linked to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. Objectives: The goal of this review is to discuss COVID-19 disease's neurological signs and squeals. Methodology: From December 2019 to May 2020, data were retrieved from PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect, as well as a manual search using Google Scholar. COVID-19, neurological symptoms, cranial nerves, motor system were among the key phrases utilized in the search. Results: The intensity of respiratory involvement increases the likelihood of neurological symptoms and consequences. According to some research, it might range from 34% to 80%. The central and peripheral neural systems are both affected, resulting in cranial nerve palsies and limb paralysis. Conclusion: COVID-19 neurologic complications are key drivers of patient severity and mortality. Headache, convulsions, mental and psychic disorders, delirium, and insomnia are just some of the symptoms that the virus can cause. The olfactory nerve is the most commonly damaged cranial nerve, resulting in anosmia. Stroke (mostly infarction), encephalitis, meningitis, Guillain-Barre syndrome, relapse of multiple sclerosis, and transverse myelitis are all symptoms and squeals.

Abstract:Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has caused a global pandemic in only 3 months. In addition to major respiratory distress, characteristic neurological manifestations are also described, indicating that SARS-CoV-2 may be an underestimated opportunistic pathogen of the brain. Based on previous studies of neuroinvasive human respiratory coronaviruses, it is proposed that after physical contact with the nasal mucosa, laryngopharynx, trachea, lower respiratory tract, alveoli epithelium, or gastrointestinal mucosa, SARS-CoV-2 can induce intrinsic and innate immune responses in the host involving increased cytokine release, tissue damage, and high neurosusceptibility to COVID-19, especially in the hypoxic conditions caused by lung injury. In some immune-compromised individuals, the virus may invade the brain through multiple routes, such as the vasculature and peripheral nerves. Therefore, in addition to drug treatments, such as pharmaceuticals and traditional Chinese medicine, non-pharmaceutical precautions, including facemasks and hand hygiene, are critically important.

Abstract:The recent outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 infections that causes coronavirus-induced disease of 2019 (COVID-19) is the defining and unprecedented global health crisis of our time in both the scale and magnitude. Although the respiratory tract is the primary target of SARS-CoV-2, accumulating evidence suggests that the virus may also invade both the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS) leading to numerous neurological issues including some serious complications such as seizures, encephalitis, and loss of consciousness. Here, we present a comprehensive review of the currently known role of SARS-CoV-2 and identify all the neurological problems reported among the COVID-19 case reports throughout the world. The virus might gain entry into the CNS either through the trans-synaptic route via the olfactory neurons or through the damaged endothelium in the brain microvasculature using the ACE2 receptor potentiated by neuropilin-1 (NRP-1). The most critical of all symptoms appear to be the spontaneous loss of breathing in some COVID-19 patients. This might be indicative of a dysfunction within the cardiopulmonary regulatory centers in the brainstem. These pioneering studies, thus, lay a strong foundation for more in-depth basic and clinical research required to confirm the role of SARS-CoV-2 infection in neurodegeneration of critical brain regulatory centers.

Abstract:Introduction and purpose:COVID-19, as an unknown disease until 2019, has posed and continues to pose a great challenge to the world of science and the people facing it. The purpose of this article is to present the possible consequences of experiencing COVID-19 disease and the pandemic itself in light of mental health and the organism functioning in the cognitive area, taking into account the impact of COVID-19 on the nervous system.State of knowledge (brief description):Coronaviruses are enveloped, positive single-stranded large RNA viruses. COVID-19 is a disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus – its first case was reported in 2019 in Wuhan, China. Human coronaviruses can exhibit neuroinvasive, neurotropic and neurovirulent, SARS-CoV-2 also. In addition to symptoms and complications in the respiratory system, symptoms and complications are also encountered in the nervous system area; cognitive functioning may also be impaired. The pandemic as a phenomenon in itself and the outbreak of COVID-19 can carry very serious consequences from the mental health field. Among these are the problem of social isolation and its consequences or the impact of the disease and pandemic on well-being. Unfortunately, the time that has elapsed since the first cases of the disease and the amount of research does not allow a clear determination of the complications and consequences of the pandemic, but certain trends and phenomena are regularly studied and described.Summary:Existing research and the state of the art strongly underscore that COVID-19 and its pandemic could impinge on the mental health of people around the world. Changes in the nervous system and cognitive functioning are also observed as a result of contracting COVID-19. Science currently has no clear answers as to how long certain complications will persist and exactly what their genesis is – further research is recommended to explain them as precisely as possible.

Abstract:The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has strained global healthcare and financial infrastructures. Neurological manifestations of COVID-19 have gained recognition, emphasizing the need for comprehensive research in this area. This systematic review aims to comprehensively examine the neurological manifestations and complications associated with COVID-19 and assess their prevalence, impact on patient outcomes, and potential relationships with comorbidities, while emphasizing the significance of ongoing research in this field. We conducted a systematic review using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Google Scholar, Science Direct, and ResearchGate databases was conducted to identify eligible studies focusing on COVID-19 patients, reporting neurological symptoms or complications, and published between 2020 and 2022 in English. The data extracted is performed in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. Two independent reviewers assessed study quality and bias using the AMSTAR 2 scale before inclusion. This systematic includes 12 systematic reviews and meta-analysis with 191,412 participants and average age of 60 years. Neurological symptoms included headaches, dizziness, anosmia, and ageusia. Complications ranged from cerebrovascular events to Guillain–Barré syndrome. Comorbidities, such as hypertension and diabetes, exacerbated severity. Mortality rates associated with neurological manifestations varied from 29.1% to 84.8%. The study underscores the complex neurological impact of COVID-19, affecting patients across age groups. Ongoing research is vital to understand mechanisms and develop targeted interventions, improving patient care and addressing pandemic consequences. This review provides a holistic view of COVID-19’s neurological effects, emphasizing the need for sustained research efforts and collaborative endeavors to combat the neurological issues.
