Abstract:Derive the importance of foreign direct investment in the world, particularly in the developing countries. FDI is critical for the developing countries which need multinational funding and expertise to expand, give structure, and guide their will to boost manufacturing and service sectors. Due to its role in promoting the growth and development wheel, providing financial resources complementary to national savings, and contributing to the transfer of technology and skills associated with modern production methods, it has emerged as one of the most significant sources of support for development. As the deteriorating economic conditions of developing countries did not leave them with many options or other solutions, their only option was to open their economies. The research touches on multiple subjects such as: Statistical Decision Theory by using statistical data to prove some of the research points, Multidimensional Statistical Analysis, Financial Econometrics which includes the financial related remarks as GDP part of the research, etc. In this sense, the goals of this paper are to highlight the importance of FDI in achieving the development in developing countries.
Contribution of Tax Induced Foreign Direct Investment for Sustainable Development in Bangladesh

Abstract:Tax incentives play a crucial role in promoting and facilitating foreign direct investment (FDI), thereby contributing to a country's overall economic development. However, Bangladesh experienced a decline in FDI-based foreign income in the first two quarters of 2018, partially attributed to a lag in FDI from the USA. Given Bangladesh's historical challenges with deficit financing post-independence, increasing self-revenue income and leveraging tax-induced FDI are imperative for achieving sustainable development goals. To develop tax incentive-based hypotheses, four investment climate factors are considered: i) Corporate Tax Rate (CTR), ii) Tax Holiday (TaxH), and iii) Tax Concession (TaxC). This research adopts an analytical and descriptive approach, employing a mixed-method research methodology to analyze data sourced from both primary and secondary sources. Data collection methods include semi-structured interviews and documentary analysis, focusing on regulatory bodies like NBR, BIDA, and BOI for tax incentive analysis, and relevant organizations such as BB, World Bank, UNCTAD, BIDS, FIAS, BEZA, and BEPZA for FDI-related documents. The impact of tax incentives on FDI inflows in Bangladesh from 2001 to 2020 is analyzed using a simple regression model. The independent variables include corporate tax rate, tax holiday, and tax concession, while controlled variables such as gross domestic product (GDP) and corruption are also considered, as they may influence FDI inflows. Statistical analysis reveals a negative influence of corporate tax rate on FDI inflows, while the tax holiday variable exhibits a positive and statistically significant relationship with FDI inflows. Furthermore, alongside the contribution of FDI, this study also examines sustainable development trends from 2016 to 2020, providing numerical insights into its attainment. Overall, this research sheds light on the importance of tax incentives in attracting FDI and its implications for sustainable development in Bangladesh.

Abstract:In the knowledge economy, sustainable development is an important topic of discussion among policymakers and researchers. Existing literature provides a scant view of sustainable development, and the dual effect of global investment and the institutional system of the countries is largely overlooked. This study investigates the immediate and long-term impacts of foreign direct investment (FDI) and institutional factors on four Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Asia–Pacific region over a span of 23 years (2000–2022). Utilizing panel data from 29 countries, we examine the relationship between FDI and SDG2, 5, 12, and 15 while considering moderating effects of control of corruption and government effectiveness. Results from the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) models reveal significant influences of FDI and institutional factors on SDGs, particularly in the long run. FDI positively affects SDG2 (Zero hunger) and SDG5 (Gender equality) while exhibiting a negative impact on SDG12 (Responsible production and consumption). Finally, the SDG15 (Life on land) is also positively affected by FDI. Moreover, institutional indicators such as control of corruption (COC), government effectiveness (GE), and regulatory quality significantly contribute to SDG achievement, with notable moderation effects of COC and GE on the FDI-SDG nexus. Pairwise panel causality test highlights different forms of causality among the variables, highlighting the complex interplay between FDI, institutional factors, and SDGs. Overall, our findings emphasize the importance of FDI and effective institutional frameworks in advancing sustainable development objectives, particularly in addressing issues of food security, gender equality, and responsible production and consumption in the Asia–Pacific region.

Abstract:In the context of developing economies, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has long been acknowledged for its potential to stimulate economic growth. However, with the evolving understanding of development encompassing not only economic prosperity but also environmental and social well-being, the impact of FDI on sustainable development has become a subject of increasing importance and complexity. To shed light on this multifaceted relationship, our study empirically investigates the causal link between FDI and sustainable development in a panel of 48 African economies spanning the period from 1990 to 2020. We employ a robust measure of sustainable development, Adjusted Net Savings (ANS), as well as an innovative Sustainable Economic Growth (SEG) index that encompasses the three core pillars of sustainable development. FDI is measured both as FDI net inflow as a percentage of GDP and as the stock of FDI as a proportion of GDP for robustness testing. Our analytical approach utilizes the GMM-PVAR model. Our findings reveal a noteworthy unidirectional negative causality running from foreign direct investment to sustainable development across African economies. Intriguingly, the magnitude of this adverse impact is more pronounced in low-income nations, while a favorable causal effect of FDI on sustainable development is observed in high-income countries within the region. Importantly, these results hold true across various measures of sustainable development and different metrics of foreign direct investment. As a result, our study offers valuable insights for policymakers in Africa and beyond. Recognizing the nuanced impact of FDI on sustainable development, we propose tailored policy recommendations that take into account the income level of countries to maximize the benefits of foreign investment while mitigating potential adverse effects. Moreover, we advocate for ongoing research and policy innovation to further align FDI with the broader goals of sustainable development on the African continent.

Abstract:The net contribution of the decomposed measures of foreign direct investment (FDIs), e.g., the inward and outward flows of FDIs, to domestic investment is still inconclusive in the case of underdeveloped and developing countries. The current literature bears testimony to this fact. Hence, this research examines the impact of inward and outward foreign direct investments (FDIs) on the domestic investment in Bangladesh. This study considers annual time series data from 1976 to 2019 and estimates this data property under the augmented ARDL approach to cointegration. In addition, this research employs the dynamic ARDL simulation technique in order to forecast the counterfactual shock of the regressors and their effects on the dependent variable. The results from the augmented ARDL method suggest that the inward FDI has a positive impact on domestic investment, while the outward FDI is inconsequential in both the long run and the short run. Besides, our estimated findings also show the economic growth’s long-run and short-run favorable effects on domestic investment. At the same time, there is no significant impact of real interest rates and institutional quality on domestic investment in the long run or the short run in Bangladesh. In addition, the counterfactual shocks (10% positive and negative) to inward FDI positively impact domestic investment, indicating the crowding-in effect of the inward FDI on the domestic investment in Bangladesh. As the inward FDI flow is a significant determinant for sustained domestic investment in Bangladesh, the policy strategy must fuel the local firms by utilizing cross-border investment.

Abstract:FDI can greatly reduce poverty by fostering long-term economic prosperity; it is a special indicator of economic growth in developing nations. As a result, utilizing annual time series data from 1986 to 2022, the research's primary goal is to investigate the impact of foreign direct investment on Bangladesh's economic growth. This goal was accomplished by processing the qualitative and economic analysis. This study investigated the impact of FDI on economic development in Bangladesh by employing standard time-series econometric tools, namely, unit root tests to check stationarity and augmented autoregressive distributed lag (augmented ARDL) bounds testing approaches to check cointegration. The final results of the ARDL model discovered that exports and foreign direct investment had an impact on economic growth over the long and short terms. In order to boost the quantity of FDI that enters Bangladesh, the current study recommends that a sound foreign investment strategy and liberal trade policy be formed that protect foreign investment and the interests of the economy. Abstract:Purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of foreign direct investment on poverty reduction and economic development Methodology: This study adopted a desk methodology. A desk study research design is commonly known as secondary data collection. This is basically collecting data from existing resources preferably because of its low cost advantage as compared to a field research. Our current study looked into already published studies and reports as the data was easily accessed through online journals and libraries. Findings: The study revealed that FDI significantly contributes to poverty reduction and economic development. FDI is linked to higher economic growth rates, driven by its infusion of capital, technology, and market access. This influx of investment creates jobs in host countries, particularly in labor-intensive sectors, effectively reducing unemployment and improving living standards. Additionally, FDI promotes technology transfer and innovation, enhancing the competitiveness of domestic industries. Furthermore, FDI's positive spillover effects extend to human capital development through skill training and improved employability, leading to higher wages and overall poverty reduction. These findings underscore FDI's multifaceted role in fostering sustainable economic growth and social progress. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Dependency Theory and Resource-Based may be used to anchor future studies on Foreign Direct Investment. Investment Promotion Agencies should establish effective investment promotion agencies to attract quality FDI, offering incentives, streamlined regulations, and investor support services. Stringent environmental regulations should be enforced to prevent FDI from causing negative environmental externalities and promote sustainable development practices.

Abstract:Sustainable investing allocates investments based on environmental, social and governance factors (ESG). The societal value of sustainable investment is becoming progressively relevant as investors are increasingly recognizing the importance of investing in companies that seek to combat climate change, environmental destruction, while promoting corporate responsibility. Environmental policy and sustainable growth initiatives at a country-level are also being influenced by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Situated within the current trend of declining foreign direct investment flows (FDI), our study examines the role of ESG factors in attracting FDI and enabling progress toward SDGs. We econometrically examine the linkages between ESG and FDI inflows for a sample of 161 counties. We also focus on low- and middle-income emerging economies and low- and middle-income commodity exporters as these countries face unique challenges of mobilizing financing to achieve SDGs and generating sustainable economic growth. Results suggest that FDI inflows to the full sample of countries are positively attracted by good governance in a destination country. We observe that good scores on HDI deters FDI, that higher FDI flows are associated with higher levels of carbon emissions in the case of emerging markets. Sustainability reporting attracts FDI to commodity exporting countries. The study provides possibilities for future research in a post-pandemic future.

Abstract:In this study, we review the literature to find how the financial development of a country attracts foreign direct investments for a sustainable real sector development of the country. The area is least focused on literature. Thus we don’t limit our search and review to any time or database or journal category. We find the theoretical logic and empirical evidence so far available in the literature. Our review finds that the development of the financial sector of a country is one of the most important attractors of FDIs. Theoretically, financial sector development works as a symbol of trust and goodness to the new potential investors and a good resource allocation channel for the existing investors. However, very few researchers find that FDIs are more prone to countries with a low developed financial system which may happen due to the presence of risk-taker foreign investors and risk-averse domestic entrepreneurs.

Abstract:This study aims to examine the relationship between Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), personal remittances received, and official development assistance (ODA) in the economic growth of Bangladesh. The study utilizes time series data on Bangladesh from 1976 to 2021. Additionally, this research contributes to the existing literature by introducing the Foreign Capital Depthless Index (FCDI) and exploring its impact on Bangladesh's economic growth. The results of the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) suggest that the economic growth of Bangladesh depends on FDI, remittances, and aid in the long run. However, these variables do not exhibit a causal relationship with GDP in the short run. The relationship between FCDI and economic growth is positive in the long run. Nevertheless, the presence of these three variables has a more significant impact on the economic growth of Bangladesh

Foreign Investment and Supply Chains in Emerging Markets: Recurring Problems and Demonstrated Solutions

Abstract:Multinational corporations account for 80 percent of all transfers of goods and services across borders, either within their own affiliate transactions or through networks with independent providers. As a result, the term supply chains is rapidly becoming the new norm in discussing the spread of trade and investment around the globe. From the point of view of developing countries, however, the ability to link host economies into international supply chains is anything but normal. There are important market failures and tricky obstacles that inhibit creation of supply chains in emerging markets. This working paper identifies the most important market failures and impediments that hinder the spread of supply chains in developing economies -- with findings quite at variance with much conventional wisdom -- and examines how some host governments have been successful in overcoming these obstructions. The evidence provides a useful perspective on the debate about the need for something that might be called industrial policy for countries that want to use foreign direct investment (FDI) to diversify and upgrade their production and export base. A sample of six diverse case studies -- chosen because they offer detailed information about information asymmetries, market failures, and coordination externalities -- shows clearly that developing country authorities should not merely sit back and wait to see what international market forces bring to them. The public sector "support" that is needed takes the form of creating effective investment promotion agencies and funding industrial parks, reliable infrastructure, and vocational training with curricula designed by companies that wish to employ the graduates. These interventions surely qualify as a kind of industrial policy, and definitely cost public money. This approach might be called light-form industrial policy to harness FDI to development and generate backward linkages as deep as possible into the host economy. This light-form industrial policy contrasts with policies that target specific domestic industries for special government support and protection while excluding foreign investment altogether from the targeted industries or subjecting foreign firms therein to performance requirements in the form of domestic content mandates, joint venture mandates, and/or other technology-sharing pressures. This latter approach could be called heavy-form industrial policy. Country experiences, including evidence from China, reveal counterproductive outcomes from the imposition of explicit performance requirements on foreign investors. To a certain extent, emerging market hosts can carry out policy interventions on their own. But the evidence presented here shows that external support is often crucial to success. Contemporary policy discourse often implies, indeed sometimes assumes, that with the explosion of international private sector investment flows there is less need for developed country donors and multilateral financial institutions to support growth and development programs -- as opposed to pure poverty reduction programs -- especially in middle-income emerging markets. But the evidence introduced in this working paper shows that there is a vital role for external donors, including the aid agencies of developed countries, the World Bank Group, and the regional development banks, to work with host country governments to improve the functioning of markets so that emerging countries can better harness FDI for development.

Abstract:Purpose: This study sought to investigate the effects of Foreign Direct Investment on poverty and development. Methodology: The study adopted a desktop research methodology. Desk research refers to secondary data or that which can be collected without fieldwork. Desk research is basically involved in collecting data from existing resources hence it is often considered a low cost technique as compared to field research, as the main cost is involved in executive’s time, telephone charges and directories. Thus, the study relied on already published studies, reports and statistics. This secondary data was easily accessed through the online journals and library. Findings: The findings reveal that there exists a contextual and methodological gap relating to Foreign Direct Investment on poverty and development. Preliminary empirical review revealed that Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) significantly contributed to economic growth and poverty reduction, particularly in countries with well-developed infrastructure, high levels of human capital, and robust governance structures. It highlighted the complexity of FDI's impact on poverty, noting that while FDI generally led to positive economic outcomes, the distribution of these benefits could be uneven, potentially exacerbating income inequality. The study emphasized the importance of a conducive policy environment and recommended a balanced approach that combined FDI with domestic investments to ensure sustainable development and poverty alleviation. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The Modernization Theory, Dependency Theory and Eclectic Paradigm (OLI Framework) may be used to anchor future studies on Foreign Direct Investment. The study recommended a multi-pronged strategy to maximize the benefits of FDI on poverty reduction and development. It suggested improving investment climates by enhancing infrastructure, education, and healthcare, and fostering stable regulatory frameworks. Policies should promote inclusive growth through progressive taxation, social safety nets, and support for SMEs. The study also advised aligning FDI with long-term development goals, strengthening institutions, and leveraging international support for capacity-building. Continuous monitoring and evaluation of FDI's impact were deemed essential to ensure it contributed positively to sustainable development and poverty reduction.

Abstract:Abstract Purpose This paper investigates the status quo in the literature on sustainable foreign direct investment "FDI" in West and Central Africa. It is believed that utilizing the FDI Qualities Policy Toolkit developed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development "OECD" will help identify which policies are acknowledged today and the ones that may need particular attention from academia and policymakers. Design/methodology/approach The paper utilizes a literature triangulation of FDI, sustainability, and economic development theories to extract the seed of a narrative helping to capture the current theoretical agenda and policy implications around the phenomenon of sustainable FDI in West and Central Africa. We selected and scrutinized ( N = 53) articles published in various academic journals between January 2019 and March 2022 and investigating issues around sustainable FDI. The OECD framework later assisted in mapping today's theoretical agenda and policy inferences related to sustainable FDI in the region. Findings It is acknowledged that there is an ongoing theoretical discussion informing on policy implications around the subject of sustainable FDI in West and Central Africa. It seems to be a consensus about the role of FDI's quality in enhancing sustainable regional growth. However, the use of the taxonomy has shown a clear focus on macroeconomic and ecological determinants reinforced through the OECD-defined policy dimensions of technical and financial support and international agreements and standards. The review allowed the perception of a theoretical gap in sustainability outcomes around the subjects of social justice in general and gender diversity in particular. It is recommended that academia and policymakers emphasize FDI theories and policies around the OECD framework of governance and domestic regulations. Originality/value The paper informs through a literature-based review on determinants that academia and policymakers need to give particular attention to for better addressing all subjects around sustainable FDI in West and Central Africa. The paper proactively advises on specific phenomena that should be considered to avoid the fulfillment of the hypothesis of an "African sustainable growth tragedy."

Abstract:This paper examines the interplay among foreign direct investment (FDI), financial development, capital formation, and renewable energy consumption in the context of Bangladesh. The study uses empirical evidence to shed light on the nexus between these variables. Panel data analysis techniques investigate the relationship over a specific period. This research provides insights into Bangladesh's dynamic interactions among FDI, financial development, capital formation, and renewable energy consumption. The study reveals significant positive associations between FDI and renewable energy consumption, indicating that FDI inflows contribute to the growth and utilization of renewable energy sources. Moreover, the analysis uncovers a positive relationship between financial development and renewable energy consumption, suggesting that a well-developed financial sector facilitates the financing and implementation of renewable energy projects. Additionally, the study highlights the role of capital formation in promoting renewable energy consumption. The positive relationship between capital formation and renewable energy consumption indicates that investment in physical infrastructure and productive assets supports the expansion and utilization of renewable energy sources. This analysis provides empirical evidence of the interdependencies among FDI, financial development, capital formation, and renewable energy consumption in Bangladesh. Overall, the findings suggest that fostering FDI, improving financial sector development, and promoting capital formation are crucial for enhancing renewable energy consumption in Bangladesh. The study's conclusions have implications for policymakers and stakeholders in designing and implementing strategies to promote sustainable and renewable energy sources in the country.

Abstract:It is argued that Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows benefits the recipient countries by providing capital, technology and long term foreign exchange and bridges savings and investment gap of the recipient country. Further, FDI provides an important role in achieving economic growth in the developing countries. This paper identifies the influential factors that determine FDI inflow in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Countries and empirically investigates the relationship between economic growth and FDI. Further, this study uses time series data from 1980 to 2018 and considered the size of the economy, economic growth, potential of the host market, economic stability, degree of openness, income level and institutional developments in the host country to identify influential factors to determinants of FDI. Analysis reveal that countries with larger Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate can successfully attract FDI and FDI on the other hand, significantly affect economic growth of a country. In addition, it was found that current account balance, financial deepening and trade openness significantly play a crucial role in determining the FDI flows into recipient countries.

Abstract:Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is crucial to support economic development for developed and developing countries. The aim of this paper is to examine the effect of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on poverty alleviation in East Africa Countries. The study adopted a time series data research design where by secondary data were used. The population applied on the financial records from 1987/88 - 2017/18 financial years (Annual Data). The sample size of the study was 31 annual observations. Tanzania was purposively sampled to be used as research location of this study. The data collected from various reliable sources which included the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Bank of Tanzania (BOT), Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC), World Bank (WB), International Monetary Fund (IMF) and United Nation Conference on Trade Development (UNCTAD). The results of the study revealed that FDI have statistical significant effects on poverty alleviation on East African countries with P- Value 0.008. The study recommends that policy makers in collaboration with the government have to pertain favorable and investment’s friendly strategies as well as commenced essential strategies transformation so as to solve the problems associated with investment sector in East Africa Countries which usually hinder the development and growth of the FDI

Abstract:It is well acknowledged that achieving sustainable development goals without negatively impacting a country’s economic activity is complicated. The question of whether foreign or domestic capital can be used to address the financial demands of the nations who lack the financial resources for a green transformation should now be resolved. Based on this, the main goal of this research is to analyze the impacts of domestic and foreign capital on carbon emissions for a heterogeneous panel of 42 countries for the period from 1990 to 2017. Aside from capital accumulation, the environmental impact of elements such as economic growth, urbanization, trade openness, and energy usage is also studied. The newly developed quantile via moment approach is utilized to isolate the impacts according to the countries’ emission levels. Finally, the impact of these variables on the recently constructed sustainable development index is investigated in order to ensure its robustness. The findings of the study reveal that the environmental efficiency of domestic capital accumulation in countries with low emission levels is higher than in countries with high emission levels. Foreign capital, on the other hand, has no substantial effect on emission levels in all quantiles.

Abstract:Employing a panel data modelling technique, we contribute to two critical research issues: what is the link between Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and economic growth and does the relationship change under different educational, institutional and economic conditions? Overall, the analysis supports the view that FDI has a stronger positive impact on economic growth in countries with a higher level of education attainment, openness to international trade and stock market development, and a lower rate of population growth and lower level of risk. Thus, countries undertaking reform of cross-border capital restrictions and controls and initiating other policy aimed at encouraging FDI need to ensure that broader social policy objectives–such as education and institutional reform–are also undertaken to leverage the benefits from FDI.

Abstract:The study examines the effect of sustainable economic growth on "FDI inflow" using comparative panel econometrics on two panels: "low-income" and "middle-income" economies between 1970 and 2021. For this, 18 "low-income" and 53 "middle-income" economies constitute the sample. The data were retrieved from the "world development indicator" website. Pre-diagnostic and post-diagnostic estimations were performed using static panel and dynamic panel approaches. Sustainable growth increases "FDI inflow" in "low-income" and "middle-income" economies during the study period, according to the findings. In addition, trade openness and the exchange rate have the potential to boost "FDI inflow" in "low-income" economies. Similarly, in "middle-income" economies, the real growth rate and exchange rate are significant boosts, however inflation significantly reduces the "FDI inflow". The findings show that policymakers in "low-income" and "middle-income" economies should maintain long-term, sustainable economic growth in order to attract more "FDI inflow" in their respective economies. Compared to the current state of knowledge in the subject, the study's findings provide evidence for "low-income" and "middle-income" nations that have been mainly overlooked in terms of sustainable growth for attracting FDI inflow. The study's outcomes are applicable and generalizable only for "middle-income" and "low-income" economies. Future researchers may include additional control factors and expand the scope of the study to include "high-income" groups.
