Abstract:The effective gas diffusion coefficient describes the process of gas diffusion in porous materials. Several crystalline and amorphous materials have a significant number of micropores in the lower nanometre range leading to a remarkable reduction of gas diffusion, known as the Knudsen effect. In the case of partial pore saturation during adsorption of gases, the available pore space is further reduced, as is the gas diffusion. In this study, the influence of partially saturated pores on the Knudsen effect and on the gas diffusion is quantified. Three different pore geometries, each having a different sorption behaviour and influence on the effective diffusion, are investigated: slit, cylindrical and spherical pores. To show the overall effect on the gas diffusion, three different types of pore size distribution are investigated for the entire sorption isotherm, including a broad equal distribution, three narrow normal distributions and two measured distributions of an ultra-high-performance concrete. The intensive computation of the exact pore saturation is discussed in this paper, and a simplified model with very low computational requirements is suggested. For all pore distributions and the three pore geometries chosen, the effect of partially saturated pores on the gas diffusion is quantified. In this study, it is shown that the influence of the water layer thickness on the effective diffusion becomes significant for pore radii below 50 nm. The assumed pore geometry is important and the highest influence of partial saturation on the effective diffusion is observed for spherical pores. Considering pore distributions, it is shown that the influence of saturation of the smallest pores has a higher influence as the water layer at pore fringe of partially saturated pores. At the end, the overall effect is quantified for an amorphous material with most pore radii below 30 nm. At a moisture level of 50 %RH, the effective diffusion is reduced by 35 % due to partial saturation.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
