Abstract:A redox flow lithium battery (RFLB) has decoupled energy storage and power generation units like a conventional redox flow battery, while it stores energy in solid materials by virtue of the unique redox targeting concept. Hence, it presents superior energy density and represents a promising approach for large-scale energy storage. In a RFLB, the potential difference between the redox shuttle molecules used in the same electrolyte normally brings about an intrinsic voltage hysteresis, resulting in a compromised voltage efficiency of the battery. Here we report a novel redox shuttle molecule pair to minimize the voltage hysteresis: anatase TiO2 is reduced by bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)chromium (CrCp2*), while LixTiO2 is oxidized by cobaltocene (CoCp2). The potential difference between CoCp2 and CrCp2* is only 0.15 V. A redox flow lithium battery is successfully demonstrated with an unprecedented voltage efficiency of 84%. The RFLB shows good cycling stability, and >90% Coulombic efficiency was demonstrated in the first 50 cycles.

Abstract:Nonaqueous redox flow batteries (RFBs) are a promising energy storage technology that enables increased cell voltage and high energy capacity compared to aqueous RFBs. Herein, we first report a novel approach to substantially increase the energy density based on the miscible liquid redox materials 2,5-di-tert-butyl-1-methoxy-4-[2'-methoxyethoxy]benzene catholyte and 2-methylbenzophenone anolyte. This system has a high theoretical cell voltage of 2.97 V and a calculated energy density of 223 Wh L-1 that is much higher than those of previously reported nonaqueous organic RFBs. Our reported redox flow chemistry displays excellent electrochemical performance and stability under cyclic voltammetry, bulk electrolysis, and flow cell conditions. A proof-of-principle RFB delivers a coulombic efficiency of 95% and energy efficiency of 70% and represents significant progress toward high energy density RFBs.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel rechargeable energy storage system having a metallic lithium negative electrode and a liquid–solid hybrid positive electrode of Fe3+/Fe2+/Fe in N,N-Dimethylformamide, which are separated by an impermeable NASICON–type Li1.4Al0.4Ge0.2Ti1.4(PO4)3–epoxy resin composite film with a lithium ion conductivity of ca. 5.0 × 10−4 S cm−1. The discharge curve for the battery shows two plateaus. The first plateau corresponds to Li + FeCl3 = LiCl + FeCl2, while the second one is associated with 2 Li + FeCl2 = 2 LiCl + Fe. In the process of reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+, it delivers a stable discharge capacity of ca. 110 mAh gFeCl3−1 with a Coulombic efficiency higher than 95% and is capable of enduring over 60 circles at a high current density of 1.0 mA cm−2 without any catalyst. Furthermore, a stable discharge capacity up to ca. 455 mAh gFeCl3−1 is achieved for conversion of FeCl3/FeCl2/Fe with a three–electron reaction. This work demonstrates a proof of feasibility of hybrid liquid–solid hybrid positive electrode, since these reactions are reversible confirmed by x–ray diffraction patterns and EDX mapping test.
Development of high-voltage and high-energy membrane-free nonaqueous lithium-based organic redox flow batteries

Abstract:Abstract Lithium-based nonaqueous redox flow batteries (LRFBs) are alternative systems to conventional aqueous redox flow batteries because of their higher operating voltage and theoretical energy density. However, the use of ion-selective membranes limits the large-scale applicability of LRFBs. Here, we report high-voltage membrane-free LRFBs based on an all-organic biphasic system that uses Li metal anode and 2,4,6-tri-(1-cyclohexyloxy-4-imino-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine)-1,3,5-triazine (Tri-TEMPO), N-propyl phenothiazine (C3-PTZ), and tris(dialkylamino)cyclopropenium (CP) cathodes. Under static conditions, the Li||Tri-TEMPO, Li||C3-PTZ, and Li||CP batteries with 0.5 M redox-active material deliver capacity retentions of 98%, 98%, and 92%, respectively, for 100 cycles over ~55 days at the current density of 1 mA/cm 2 and a temperature of 27 °C. Moreover, the Li||Tri-TEMPO (0.5 M) flow battery delivers an initial average cell discharge voltage of 3.45 V and an energy density of ~33 Wh/L. This flow battery also demonstrates 81% of capacity for 100 cycles over ~45 days with average Coulombic efficiency of 96% and energy efficiency of 82% at the current density of 1.5 mA/cm 2 and at a temperature of 27 °C.

Abstract:While membrane-free batteries have been successfully demonstrated in static batteries, membrane-free batteries in authentic flow modes with high energy capacity and high cyclability are rarely reported. Here, we present a biphasic flow battery with high capacity employing organic compound in organic phase and zinc in aqueous phase. Under ambient flow testing conditions, a capacity retention of 94.5% is obtained over 190 charging/discharging cycles with a Coulombic efficiency of > 99% at a current density of 8.54 mA cm−2. Self-discharge at full state-of-charge of the membrane-free RFB is negligible (potential drop = 0.78 mV h−1). DFT calculation and operando UV-visible and FT-IR spectroscopies are performed to probe minor side reactions during cycling and monitor the water content in the organic electrolyte in real time. The successful demonstration of the prototypical membrane-free battery under flow conditions, together with the developed operando spectroscopic techniques, will open a new avenue towards detailed mechanistic studies and practical applications of redox flow batteries for cost-effective energy storage.

Distinct from the recent semi-solid lithium rechargeable flow battery, the energy storage materials of RFLB stored in separate energy tanks remain stationary upon operation, giving us a fresh perspective on building large-scale energy storage systems with higher energy density and improved safety.
High‐Voltage Catholyte for High‐Energy‐Density Nonaqueous Redox Flow Battery

Abstract:Redox flow batteries (RFBs) with high energy densities are essential for efficient and sustainable long‐term energy storage on a grid scale. To advance the development of nonaqueous RFBs with high energy densities, a new organic RFB system employing a molecularly engineered tetrathiafulvalene derivative ((PEG3/PerF)‐TTF) as a high energy density catholyte was developed. When paired with a lithium metal anode, the two‐electron‐active (PEG3/PerF)‐TTF catholyte produced a cell voltage of 3.56 V for the first reduction and 3.92 V for the second reduction process. In cyclic voltammetry and flow cell tests, the redox chemistry exhibited excellent cycling stability. The Li|(PEG3/PerF)‐TTF batteries, with concentrations of 0.1 M and 0.5 M, demonstrated capacity retention rates of ~94% (99.87% per cycle, 97.52% per day) and 90% (99.93% per cycle, 99.16% per day), and the average Coulombic efficiencies of 99.38% and 98.35%, respectively. The flow cell achieved a high power density of 129 mW/cm2. Furthermore, owing to the high redox potential and solubility of (PEG3/PerF)‐TTF, the flow cell attained a high operational energy density of 72 Wh/L (100 Wh/L theoretical). A 0.75 M flow cell exhibited an even higher operational energy density of 96 Wh/L (150 Wh/L theoretical).

Among them, Li-redox flow batteries stand out as one that combines the existing knowledge of Li-ion batteries with the advantage of redox flow systems, and steps further toward functioning as fuel cells by fueling the cell with an external chemical agent. Following a brief recount of the features of Li-ion and redox flow battery systems, the concept of a Li-redox flow battery, which emerged from a synergy of the two battery systems, is presented.

Abstract:Based on the discovery of reversible redox targeting reactions of battery materials1, we have recently reported a conceptually new device — redox flow lithium battery (RFLB)2 for large-scale energy storage. In RFLB, the active materials are kept in separate containers without attaching to the current collectors. Upon operation, the exchange of electrons between the materials and current collectors is mediated by the flow of redox shuttle molecules dissolved in the electrolyte fluids via redox targeting reactions. With the cathodic and anodic lithium-ion battery materials LiFePO4 2 and TiO2 3 as an example, we have demonstrated that both materials could be chemically delithiated and lithiated reversibly in the presence of suitable redox mediators. Since the concentrations of Li+ in both materials are as high as 22 M, around 10 times tank energy density could be achieved compared with the conventional vanadium redox-flow battery. In our previous study, we have demonstrated RFLB half-cells. Here we report our latest progress in the development of RFLB full systems. This comprises the development of robust redox mediators for both anode and cathode, Li+-conducting membranes, as well as mechanistic studies on the Li+-coupled heterogeneous charge transfer — the essential process for the operation of RFLB. With the above efforts, we have successfully fabricated the first RFLB full cell with LiFePO4 and TiO2 as the cathodic and anodic Li-storage materials, respectively. The system functions with power generated in the cell via the redox reactions of shuttle molecules dissolved in the catholyte and anolyte, while energy stored in the two Li-storage materials, which are kept in two separate energy tanks. Abstract:Non-aqueous redox flow batteries, because of larger operating voltage, have attracted considerable attention for high-density energy storage applications. However, the study of the anolyte is rather limited compared with the catholyte due to the labile properties of redox mediators at low potentials. Here, we report a new strategy that exploits high concentration organic lithium metal solution as a robust and energetic anolyte. The solution formed by dissolving metallic lithium with biphenyl (BP) in tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (TEGDME) presents a redox potential of 0.39 V versus Li/Li+, and a concentration up to 2 M. When coupled with a redox-targeted LiFePO4 catholyte system, the constructed redox flow lithium battery full cell delivers a cell voltage of 3.0 V and presents reasonably good cycling performance.

Abstract:The rising demands on low-cost and grid-scale energy storage systems call for new battery techniques. Herein, we propose the design of an iconoclastic battery configuration by introducing solid Li-storage chemistry into aqueous redox flow batteries. By dispersing tiny-sized Li-storable active material particulates and conductive agents into high-salinity aqueous electrolytes, a slurry flow battery based on an intriguing interfacial charge “passing-down” mechanism is constructed, presenting expanded potential window, favorable redox stability, and good fluidity. A low-cost commercial dialysis membrane is used as the separator, which could efficiently inhibit the crossover of cathodic/anodic particulates via size exclusion and enable unimpeded transmembrane Li+ migration. The aqueous lithium-ion slurry flow batteries achieve nearly 100% Coulombic efficiency, long cycling life, high safety, and low system cost, holding great promise for large-scale energy storage applications.

Abstract:Liquid/liquid biphasic batteries without a membrane could be promising models of redox flow batteries. However, such batteries inherently undergo self-discharge at the liquid/liquid interface, resulting in a low Coulombic efficiency and poor capacity retention. Herein, we report a triphasic system comprising all-nonaqueous electrolytes to overcome the challenges in biphasic systems. By incorporation of a third electrolyte layer to separate the anolyte and catholyte, the system effectively impeded the self-discharge event without compromising the Coulombic efficiency and capacity retention. Li metal anode and phenothiazine derivative C18-PTZ (0.5 M) cathode have been used to construct the electrochemical cell. Moreover, we have designed two all-nonaqueous triphasic models either stacking the phases vertically or physically separating two phases sidewise along with a common interfacial layer at the top. Interestingly, both designs showed high capacity retention under static (∼98%, 31 days, 100 cycles) and flow (∼99%, 39 days, 100 cycles) conditions. Moreover, all batteries exhibited an average Coulombic efficiency of nearly 100%.

Abstract:Redox flow batteries (RFBs) based on lithium polysulfide (Li-PS) chemistry present great opportunities for large-scale energy storage and electric vehicles because of their use of abundant raw materials and their higher energy density compared with traditional flow batteries. However, to successfully implement Li-PS RFBs, issues related to the crossover of PS species through a membrane separator must be resolved. In this work, we demonstrate a facile method for fabricating a novel multifunctional electrochemical membrane (mECM) consisting of an organic ion exchange membrane reinforced with a porous carbon nanotube layer and a boron nitride layer. This rational design endows the membrane with remarkable ion selectivity and dimensional stability in organic electrolyte, leading to a greatly enhanced Li+/PS ion selectivity, which exceeds that of a commercial polyolefin separator (i.e., Celgard 2325) by three orders of magnitude. A Li-PS RFB with the mECM exhibited stable electrochemical performance (0.05% capacity decay per cycle after 40 cycles) with 78% capacity retention over 100 cycles at 0.75 C, while a reference cell with a Celgard 2325 membrane rapidly lost its capacity (0.33% capacity decay per cycle and 33% capacity at 100 cycles). Our results strongly suggest that the mECM with its high Li+/PS ion selectivity is a promising membrane separator for developing high-performance Li-PS RFB systems.

Abstract:Redox flow batteries are promising for large-scale energy storage, but some long-standing problems such as safety issues, system cost and cycling stability must be resolved. Here we demonstrate a type of redox flow battery that is based on all-polymer particulate slurry electrolytes. Micro-sized and uniformly dispersed all-polymer particulate suspensions are utilized as redox-active materials in redox flow batteries, breaking through the solubility limit and facilitating the application of insoluble redox-active materials. Expensive ion-exchange membranes are replaced by commercial dialysis membranes, which can simultaneously realize the rapid shuttling of H+ ions and cut off the migration of redox-active particulates across the separator via size exclusion. In result, the all-polymer particulate slurry redox flow batteries exhibit a highly reversible multi-electron redox process, rapid electrochemical kinetics and ultra-stable long-term cycling capability.
All-solid-state Lithium Battery with High Capacity Enabled by a New Way of Composite Cathode Design

Abstract:A simple way to assemble an all-solid-state lithium-ion battery with ultrahigh surface capacity and energy density was established. Polyethylene oxide-based solid-state electrolyte was prepared via solution method and nano-SiO2 was added into the electrolyte to increase the conductivity. Thick compact LiFePO4 pellet infused with dry polymer electrolyte was used as the composite cathode in the all-solid-state lithium battery. The compact composite cathode not only showed large ionic and electronic conductivity, but also provided sufficient “free space” to compensate the volumetric change of the active materials during cycling. The all-solid-state lithium battery (composite cathode/dry polymer electrolyte/Li) was cycled at a constant current density of 200μA/cm2 at 60°C. A maximum discharge specific capacity of 157mAh/g was achieved and the surface capacity reached 15mAh/cm2, which was of critical significance for all-solid-state lithium batteries. Good capacity retention was achieved after 10cycles and great rate performance was obtained. Even at a current density of 1000μA/cm2, the battery delivered a specific discharge capacity of 71mAh/g, corresponding to a surface capacity of 6mAh/cm2. The experimental data demonstrated that the composite cathode was a promising design in high-performance bulk-type all-solid-state lithium batteries.

Abstract:Electrical energy storage system such as secondary batteries is the principle power source for portable electronics, electric vehicles and stationary energy storage. As an emerging battery technology, Li-redox flow batteries inherit the advantageous features of modular design of conventional redox flow batteries and high voltage and energy efficiency of Li-ion batteries, showing great promise as efficient electrical energy storage system in transportation, commercial, and residential applications. The chemistry of lithium redox flow batteries with aqueous or non-aqueous electrolyte enables widened electrochemical potential window thus may provide much greater energy density and efficiency than conventional redox flow batteries based on proton chemistry. This Review summarizes the design rationale, fundamentals and characterization of Li-redox flow batteries from a chemistry and material perspective, with particular emphasis on the new chemistries and materials. The latest advances and associated challenges/opportunities are comprehensively discussed.

Abstract:Low energy densities restrict the widespread applications of redox flow batteries. Herein, we report an alkaline Zn-Mn aqueous redox flow battery (ARFB) based on Zn(OH) 4 2 - /Zn and MnO 4 - /MnO 4 2 - redox-pairs. The use of NaMnO 4 at high concentrations (up to 3.92 M) as the positive active material gives the ARFB a high energy density, whilst the use of graphene modified carbon felt (G/CF) as the working electrode ensures durable cell operation. The resulting Zn-Mn ARFB demonstrates an ultra-high voltage of 1.98 V, long cyclability (5000 cycles), high theoretical energy densities of half-cell (208 Wh L - 1 catholyte ) and actual discharge energy density of full-cell (97.8 Wh L - 1 ), as well as an impressive maximum power density of 644 mW cm - 2 . Further, the developed Zn-Mn ARFBs worked efficiently in cell stacks, thus offering excellent scalability, which demonstrate Zn-Mn ARFBs have excellent potentials for electrical energy storage.

Abstract:Redox flow batteries (RFBs) have been recognized as a promising option for scalable and dispatchable renewable energy storage (e.g. solar and wind energy). Zinc metal represents a low cost, high capacity anode material to develop high energy density aqueous redox flow batteries. However, the energy storage applications of traditional inorganic Zn halide flow batteries are primarily plagued by the material challenges of traditional halide cathode electrolytes (e.g. bromine) including corrosion, toxicity, and severe crossover. As reported here, we have developed a bipolar Zinc-ferrocene salt compound, Zinc 1,1’-bis(3-sulfonatopropyl)ferrocene, Zn[Fc(SPr)2] (1.80 M solubility or 48.2 Ah/L charge storage capacity) – a robust, energy-dense, bipolar redox-active electrolyte material for high performance Zn organic RFBs. Using a low-cost porous Daramic membrane, the Zn[Fc(SPr)2] aqueous organic redox flow battery (AORFB) has worked in dual-flow and single-flow modes. It has manifested outstanding current, energy, and power performance, specifically, operating at high current densities of up to 200 mA/cm2 and delivering an energy efficiency of up to 81.5% and a power density of up to 270.5 mW/cm2. A Zn[Fc(SPr)2] AORFB demonstrated an energy density of 20.2 Wh/L and displayed 100% capacity retention for 2000 cycles (1284 hr or 53.5 days). The Zn[Fc(SPr)2] ionic bipolar electrolyte not only offers record-setting, highly-stable, energy-dense, and the most powerful Zn-organic AORFBs to date, but it also provides a new paradigm to develop even more advanced redox materials for scalable energy storage.

Abstract:Large surface areas while maintaining a low mass transport resistance is a critical criterion for the optimal design of electrode structures for aqueous redox flow batteries. However, for conventional micro-scale electrode structures, increasing surface areas will lead to an increase in the mass transfer resistance. In this work, a composite electrode with a gradient porosity distribution is fabricated through combining two different carbon felt layers of different porosities. The smaller-porosity layer, offering a larger surface area, is placed adjacent to the membrane, while the larger-porosity layer, providing a smaller mass transfer resistance is placed on the flow field side. The thickness ratio of the two layers is adjusted in terms of the battery performance while applied in the vanadium redox flow battery. It is demonstrated that the battery with the structure-optimized composite electrode achieves a high energy efficiency of 82.7 % at 200 mA·cm −2 at an electrolyte flow rate of 30 mL·min −1 , and delivers a discharge capacity of 240 mAh at 400 mA·cm −2 , which is 2.18 times that of the conventional graphite felt electrode. This work offers an idea for the structural design of high-performance aqueous redox flow batteries.
