Abstract:Liquid lead and lead–bismuth alloy technologies for advanced nuclear energy systems have been under investigation for several years to overcome technological difficulties related to their use as coolants in the GEN-IV Lead-cooled Fast Reactor. Considerable progress has been made regarding the qualification of different materials and the understanding of liquid metal embrittlement, corrosion processes and coolant chemistry. Different approaches to protect the surface against corrosion have been successfully demonstrated at the laboratory-scale but, most of the promising results must still be confirmed at engineering scale over extended cycle lengths or higher temperatures. The current understanding of the fundamental issues related to corrosion, the recent research progresses on structural materials and the prospective methods to mitigate corrosion, such as protective coatings, are reviewed in the article. An outline of the most suitable type of structural materials for LFRs realization and a brief description of reactor systems, such as MYRRHA ADS/LFR, ALFRED, and Westinghouse Program LFR, are also reported.
